Tout le monde s'accorde pour attribuer à Galilée la paternité de la science moderne. Mais aucun ouvrage, à ce jour, n'a mieux situé la place de la révolution galiléenne dans l'histoire de la pensée que le livre de Maurice Clavelin, professeur de philosophie à l'université de Paris IV-Sorbonne, paru en 1968 et aujourd'hui réédité. L'ambition de l'auteur - promouvoir une approche globale de la philosophie du Pisan, tout à la fois théoricien du mouvement et astronome - n'a rien (...) perdu de son actualité. Très réservé vis-à-vis d'une approche purement sociologique, et des interprétations atténuant la rupture que représente l'oeuvre de Galilée, Maurice Clavelin cherche plutôt à cerner les problèmes, les concepts et la méthode qui ont permis à Galilée de mettre la mécanique classique en lieu et place de l'ancienne physique aristotélicienne. Ces deux essais tournent autour des deux thèmes de prédilection de Maurice Clavelin. Le premier, Galilée ou la naissance de la science moderne, interroge l'un des tournants les plus importants de l'histoire des sciences : le " moment Galilée ". L'auteur montre que ce n'est pas une simple critique des idées traditionnelles ou une meilleure attention portée aux données de l'observation qui caractérise la science de ce génie. Rallié aux théories de Copernic, Galilée crée une vraie science mathématisée (...) du mouvement, véritable révolution conceptuelle qui ouvre une ère nouvelle à la spéculation sur la Nature, et signe ainsi l'acte de naissance de la science moderne. Le second aborde sous un angle inédit le rapport entre science et philosophie. Il montre qu'au début du XXe siècle, et après une longue stagnation, la théorie empiriste de la connaissance reprend forme et rigueur sous l'influence combinée de la logique symbolique et de l'interprétation logiciste des mathématiques. Le rôle de Russell est ici décisif, comme ses réinterprétations par Wittgenstein, Quine, et le cercle de Vienne. Un livre qui clôt l'oeuvre d'un grand philosophe des sciences. (shrink)

Le but de cette étude est de faire apparaître le rôle éminent que joua le copernicianisme dans le remplacement, en un siècle et demi à peine (1543-1687), de la philosophie naturelle traditionnelle par la science moderne. Son idée directrice est qu’en dépit de ses implications théoriquement incompatibles avec la philosophie naturelle traditionnelle, le copernicianisme n’exerça pleinement son pouvoir rénovateur que grâce à un afflux de données inédites, inassimilables par l’ancien système, ou encore d’initiatives théoriques dont le développement n’eût pas été (...) possible sans les modifications conceptuelles qu’il entraînait. Volontairement limitée aux travaux principaux de Kepler et de Galilée, l’étude montre comment de ces données et de ces initiatives combinées avec l’héliocentrisme naquirent des idées et des procédures radicalement nouvelles qui disloquèrent de façon irréversible l’ancienne philosophie naturelle. In view of several accounts of Galileo (as an "anarchist", Aristotelian-Thomist, Platonist, empiricist, and apriorist), this paper argues that, though the continued vitality of these interpretations indicates the uniqueness of Galileo's place in the philosophy of science, the philosophical importance of each depends on denying the alternatives; then proposes a synthetic approach as a solution; identifies it as a tradition; discusses its best and latest example (Clavelin); accepts the essential point of his account of Galileo's method (the skillful combination (...) of thought and observation); and defines the novelty of his contribution as the analysis from that point of view of new elements of Galileo's work. However, it is argued that Clavelin's account of Galileo's theory of method does not do justice to the complexity and wealth of Galileo's philosophical remarks, and hence a new approach is suggested such that the essential feature of Galileo's philosophy of science becomes his skillful combination of scientific practice and philosophical theorizing. There is good reason to believe that he deliberately abandoned it and that, he had lived, he would not have completed it, at least in the form that he first outlined. The notion of "feminist pragmatism" or "pragmatist feminism" has been around since Charlene Haddock Seigfried introduced it two decades ago. However, the bulk of the work in this field has been directed toward recovering the feminist strain of classical American philosophy, largely through renewed interest in the work of Jane Addams. Laws through which we explain particular events need not be laws which describe uniform sequences of events; they may be laws stating uniform connections between two types of factor contained within a complex event. Hempel's apparent insistence that laws state the conditions invariably accompanying a type of complex event, that the event be an instance of the laws "covering" it, results from the Humean analysis in which causation obtains between types of events and "the cause" means necessary conditions. But historians (...) often depict sufficient conditions. On the other hand, some knowledge of general laws is a presupposition of Dray's "continuous series" model of historical explanation. (shrink)

The paper proposes a distinction between ethical problems internal to the practice of a discipline and ethical problems external to it. It argues that ethical problems encountered in architecture are typically of the former kind, in contrast, for example, to bioethical problems. From this point of view, it discusses the state of other arts and surveys various 19th and 20th century positions concerning ethics in architecture. It illustrates that, where architecture is concerned, ethics is closely related to aesthetics and frequently (...) tied to a philosophy of history, a point which is explained with the help of the above-mentioned distinction.
