    The Ontologies of Science and Religion.Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode - 2023 - Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture 7 (3):1-3.
Preview: Science and religion are complex cultural phenomena, which bear on our understanding of the world, life, consciousness, agency, morality, as well as all other fundamental issues human beings puzzle over. There exists a longstanding question about whether science and religion, and the responses they offer to these issues, are complementary or in conflict. The conflict narrative, championed for example by the New Atheists, emphasizes discrepancies between scientific and religious explanations and typically advances methodological, ethical, and ontological naturalism as providing (...)

Science versus Religion as Guide to Metaphysics.Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode - 2023 - Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture 7 (4):1-4.
Preview: This is the second volume of the double issue of Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture devoted to the relationship between science and religion. The contributions across these two volumes have mostly been concerned with, and argued for, various aspects of a non-reductive view of this relationship, according to which reality is not limited to what the natural sciences can tell us about it. That is the view that science and religion are not in conflict, or that the (...)

It is uncommon for aestheticians to co-author books with artists, and very rare for philosophers of religion or metaphysicians to do so. As the longstanding col.

    The Two Cultures in Philosophy.Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode - 2021 - Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture 4 (4):105-122.
In this paper I revisit the debate concerning the distinction, which is sometimes made between “analytic” and “continental” philosophy. I look at the historical context in which the distinction came to prominence in the twentieth century, the reasons why it subsequently declined in popularity, and eventually had begun to be undermined. I argue that the distinction possesses intuitive content, which the recent attempts at exposing it as conceptually flawed fail to account for. I suggest that the intuitive content of the (...)

    Revisiting Solaris: Encountering Otherness and the Limits of Representation.Monika Anna Slawkowska-Rode & Mikolaj Slawkowski-Rode - 2021 - Pro-Fil 22 (Special Issue):78-91.
One of the core themes of Stanisław Lem’s 1961 novel Solaris is the encounter with radical otherness. The ocean planet being studied by scientists form earth is usually interpreted as a representation of radical otherness, which eludes human efforts of understanding. In this paper we argue that in Solaris Lem attempts to show not merely that the ocean is unknowable, but that the unknowability is itself impossible to adequately conceptualise and represent. However, we further argue that this impossibility is the (...)

Peter of John Olivi on Representation and Self-Representation.Christian Rode - 2010 - Quaestio 10:155-166.
This paper focuses on Olivi’s theory of representation and aims at showing that his theory does not endorse epistemological representationalism . Moreover, there is no representation without self-representation for Olivi. Therefore, his account of self-representation or inner experience resembles modern higher-order theories of consciousness. But unlike most modern authors, Olivi seems to combine a higher-order thought theory with a higher-order perception one.

Typology of perpetrators of domestic violence.Danuta Rode - 2010 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 41 (1):36-45.
Typology of perpetrators of domestic violence The objective of the research conducted by the author was to obtain an answer to the question: could we distinguish different types of intrafamily violence perpetrators considering a specified profile of personality factors and temperament traits and how domestic violence perpetrators cope with stressful situations? The research was conducted on a group of 325 men who were convicted pursuant to article 207§1 & 2 of harassment over family members. In terms of a gender the (...)

There must be more to development of mindreading and metacognition than passing false belief tasks.Mikolaj Hernik, Pasco Fearon & Peter Fonagy - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (2):147-148.
We argue that while it is a valuable contribution, Carruthers' model may be too restrictive to elaborate our understanding of the development of mindreading and metacognition, or to enrich our knowledge of individual differences and psychopathology. To illustrate, we describe pertinent examples where there may be a critical interplay between primitive social-cognitive processes and emerging self-attributions.

    Stara duša u novom mehaničkom tijelu.Mikolaj Martinjak - 2022 - Disputatio Philosophica 24 (1):81-92.

    An "Indifferent Presentation".Tim Rode - 1987 - Grazer Philosophische Studien 29 (1):129-143.
In his essay, "Über Gegenstandstheorie", Meinong presents a clear formulation of his somewhat paradoxical Ontology. I have attempted to construct an explicit differentiation between Meinong's objects which are indifferent to being, and objects upon which a type of being is predicated. I argue that once a clear distinction between Meinongian objects and objects of a higher order is effected, not only do paradoxical inconsistencies fade, but also the Ontology itself gains intuitive appeal.

Human tool cognition relies on teleology.Mikołaj Hernik - 2020 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 43.
Osiurak and Reynaud's account of human tool cognition misses key element: human capacity for functional representations and teleological inferences. I argue that the teleofunctional approach accounts better for some features of human tool cognition and points to a viable candidate for the cognitive “difference-maker” behind human technological success.

Sätze und Dinge: Die propositio in re bei Walter Burley und anderen.Christian Rode - 2005 - Bochumer Philosophisches Jahrbuch Fur Antike Und Mittelalter 10 (1):67-91.
This article examines the role of the mediaeval theory of the propositio in re, as proposed by Walter Burley and others, which bears a striking resemblance to the theory of the “proposition” advocated by G. E. Moore and B. Russell. Burley’s proposition composed of real things has the function of an ultimate significate for every sentence of natural language. The main problems of such a theory are on the one hand absurdities like a bird flying between the subject and predicate (...)

The Effect of Context and Individual Differences in Human‐Generated Randomness.Mikołaj Biesaga, Szymon Talaga & Andrzej Nowak - 2021 - Cognitive Science 45 (12):e13072.
Many psychological studies have shown that human‐generated sequences are hardly ever random in the strict mathematical sense. However, what remains an open question is the degree to which this (in)ability varies between people and is affected by contextual factors. Herein, we investigated this problem. In two studies, we used a modern, robust measure of randomness based on algorithmic information theory to assess human‐generated series. In Study 1 (), in a factorial design with task description as a between‐subjects variable, we tested (...)
