This article applies a critical femininities perspective to the concept of women’s leadership, interrogating the market-oriented instrumentalization of femininity. The author presents empirical research consisting of in-depth interviews conducted with young women leaders in European student organizations. These participants juggle complicity and subversion as they negotiate the divergent expectations of femininity and leadership through interpersonal interactions and sociocultural positionalities. In these narratives the themes of social responsibility, difference, femininity, culture and embodiment are interlaced. The analysis of findings complicates monolithic interpretations (...) of femininity by evidencing intra-categorical fracturing, multiplicity in locations and manifestations of femininities, conflicting attachments and affective relations to femininity, and broader geopolitical contextualization. This theoretically and practically challenges tropes of hegemonic femininity, and presents opportunities for resistance. On this basis the author argues for countering the feminist trouble of engaging with non-transgressive femininity from within strongly normative spaces in the development of critical femininity studies. Nostalgia is a fond longing for the past that has been shown to increase feelings of meaning, social connectedness, and self-continuity. Although nostalgia for personal memories provides intra- and interpersonal benefits, there may be negative consequences of group-based nostalgia on the perception and acceptance of others. The presented research examined national nostalgia, and its effects on group identification and political attitudes in the United States. In a sample of US voters, tendencies to feel personal and national nostalgia are associated with (...) markedly different emotional and attitudinal profiles. Higher levels of national nostalgia predicted both positive attitudes toward President Trump and racial prejudice, though there was no evidence of such relationships with personal nostalgia. National nostalgia most strongly predicted positive attitudes toward president Trump among those high in racial prejudice. Furthermore, nostalgia's positive relationship with racial prejudice was partially mediated by perceived outgroup threat. Results from this study will help us better understand how the experience of national nostalgia can influence attitudes and motivate political behavior. (shrink)

Model theory is the branch of mathematical logic looking at the relationship between mathematical structures and logic languages. These formal languages are free from the ambiguities of natural languages, and are becoming increasingly important in areas such as computing, philosophy and linguistics. This book provides a clear introduction to the subject for both mathematicians and the non-specialists now needing to learn some model theory.

In this article we define a logical system called Hybrid Partial Type Theory ( $\mathcal {HPTT}$ ). The system is obtained by combining William Farmer’s partial type theory with a strong form of hybrid logic. William Farmer’s system is a version of Church’s theory of types which allows terms to be non-denoting; hybrid logic is a version of modal logic in which it is possible to name worlds and evaluate expressions with respect to particular worlds. The Moral and Religious Thought of Yi Hwang (Toegye): A Study of Korean Neo-Confucian Ethics and Spirituality is the culmination of an almost decade-long study of the Korean Neo-Confucian scholar, Yi Hwang Toegye (1501–1570). With a focus on the moral and spiritual aspects of the theories of Toegye, Chung maps out a brilliant overview of the philosopher's worldview and literary works. Chung's primary objective is to provide "thought-provoking" and fresh insights into one of the most important Korean Neo-Confucian thinkers in history, as well as shed light on Neo-Confucian thought in general and how Toegye's philosophy in particular can be relevant in modern interreligious dialogues (p. 149).Consisting of ten chapters, where each chapter could serve as an individual article, Chung takes the reader through the core concepts of Toegye and his development of a form of self-cultivation different from the Chinese Neo-Confucian idea of self-cultivation. This together created a holistic religious worldview with a strong spiritual dimension, which manifests through selfcultivation practices. The first two chapters introduce Toegye and the historical context of 16th-century Joseon-dynasty Korea (1392–1910); his understanding of the Neo-Confucian tradition as the true learning; and his rejection of Daoism and Buddhism. With the reader introduced to the immediate historical context and Neo-Confucian discourse of the time, the following three chapters cover Toegye's religious and moral understanding of the relationship between the Heavenly Principle (C. tianli, K. cheolli) and human nature (C. renxing, K. inseong). Furthermore, Chung covers the moral-spiritual implications that the Four-Seven Debate had on Toegye's later practical self-cultivation for becoming a sage. In short, the debate concerns the relation between the "four sprouts" of human characteristics as first described by Mengzi (ca. 371–289 BCE) and the seven human emotions mentioned in various classical texts. Toegye believed in the doctrine that the "experience of Heaven was within oneself" (p. 47). By way of a textual-interpretive approach, Chung compares Toegye's thought with Christian contra Buddhist theological ideas and how these findings can help develop an interreligious approach. In chapter nine, Chung suggests that the idea of self-transcendence through self-cultivation can be the ultimate reality. In this chapter, Chung wants to break with the tendency in interreligious dialogue where many scholars rely heavily on Christian theological terms. La exclusión de la ética en las reflexiones actuales de la economía tiene su origen en una lectura incompleta y tendenciosa de autores como Adam (...) Smith, John Stuart Mill o León Walras, para quienes la economía era un discurso moral y no mera técnica para llegar a una asignación eficiente de los bienes sociales y, por lo tanto, hoy es urgente la tarea de vincular nuevamente la economía con la ética basada en el consenso, para atender los reclamos de una justicia distributiva. El presente artículo se centra en el estudio de varias experiencias basadas en dinámicas de presupuestos participativos y dirigidas a niños, niñas y adolescentes. Esta investigación recogió datos de las principales experiencias participativas en el ámbito de la Provincia de Alicante durante el periodo 2015-2022 a través de una encuesta y de una búsqueda de documentación relacionada. Los datos provenientes de los ayuntamientos han sido tratados a través del programa MAXQDA. Philosophy in the 20th century witnessed a schism between so called ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ schools of philosophy. One of the aims of the IJPS from its inception was to provide a space for articles attempting to overcome, or at least foreshorten, that divide. This paper critically examines the various understandings of the divide and takes a quick glance at some of the attempts to bridge it.

What would it mean to do justice to testimonies of traumatic experience? That is, how can experiences which do not fit the customary scripts of sense-making be heard? Whereas processes of official memorialization or legal redress often demand that victims and survivors convey their experiences through familiar modes of narration, in my project on ‘grammars of listening’ or ‘gramáticas de lo inaudito’ I want to ask how it might be possible to hear these experiences on their own terms and what (...) the challenges are that we encounter when trying to do so. What I ultimately want to argue is that doing justice to trauma requires a profound philosophical questioning of the conditions that allow us to listen to testimony, and a true reckoning of the responsibility that we bear as listeners. El tema de la interferencia estatal en las funciones parentales nos conduce a la dicotomía entre lo público y lo privado, propia de teorías liberales y ampliamente criticada por feministas. El presente artículo reflexiona en torno a los planteamientos, críticas y reconsideraciones de las ideas de Rawls acerca del valor de la familia y su relación con el Estado. Se sostiene que, para el autor, la familia es una institución ambivalente, y que eso se traduce en contradicciones en su postura, (...) la que —en todo caso— no presta atención a la situación de los niños y las niñas como personas actuales dentro de esa esfera. Sin perjuicio de eso, la revisión de algunas de sus ideas permite afirmar que el ámbito familiar, y particularmente las situaciones que involucran a los niños y las niñas, no deben ser herméticos ante los principios de justicia, siendo los derechos humanos un discurso válido y necesario en el campo de las relaciones intersubjetivas. The way in which the term "activity" is understood determines foundations for the logical theory of activity. Activity understood as performance of changes or forbearance of performing a change is an object of G. H. von Wright's logic of actions based on the logic of changes. Generalization of such treatment of activity is T. Kubiński's concept according to which it consists in adopting a specific attitude towards a change; an object of nth logic of actions is description of n attitudes (...) to changes. The distinction made between two main attitudes, out of which one expresses itself in activity and the other in its forbearance makes it necessary to specify more exactly the concept of forbearance. Analysis of this concept brings out strongly its ambiguity, it emphasizes the difference between non-activity and forbearance. Defining forbearance as non-activity in the situation, in which a possibility of activity did exist involves application of one of the modal concepts. The concepts in which forbearance is not taken into account constitute an argument justifying an assertion that forbearance cannot be expressed by the negation function. Attempts at formalization of intuitions connected with the term "forbearance of activity" show how deeply entangled it is in modal contexts, and even in deontic concepts if it is interpreted as "forbearance of activity". Unter Unsterblichkeit wird konventionell und vorrangig die Unsterblichkeit der Seele verstanden. Infolge der religiösen Dominanz des Seelenbegriffes im Laufe der Geschichte hat sich an der tradierten Einstellung zugunsten des Begriffes der Unsterblichkeit der Seele auf Kosten des Begriffes der irdischen Unsterblichkeit in der Forschung wenig und im allgemeinen Bewusstsein so gut wie nichts geändert. Dieses Desiderat soll durch diese Arbeit erfüllt werden.

Im Ausgang von der anf änglichen Frage, welche Formen der Empathie zu den Produktionsbedingungen einer gelingenden Komödie gehören, wird zunächst argumentiert, dass Komik generell ›kulturelle Empathie‹ voraussetzt, d.i. ein Gespür dafür, welche Erwartungen und emotionalen Reaktionen bestimmte Themen und situative Konstellationen auslösen werden. Situationskomik und insbesondere die Komik peinlicher familiärer Situationen werden darauf zurückgeführt, dass wir uns sowohl empathisch in die Gefühle und die Peinlichkeit der Lebenslage der Protagonisten hineinversetzen können als auch gleichzeitig selbst die unbeteiligte Perspektive des Beobachters einnehmen. (...) Anschließend untersucht der Beitrag die Filmkomödie Toni Erdmann als Sonderfall einer Wiederverheiratungskomödie, die selbst eine Reflexion über Empathie darstellt. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Form von Empathie, die der Protagonist im Zusammenhang des für die Wiederverheiratungskomödie charakteristischen Erziehungsprozesses für die Protagonistin Ines aufbringt, nicht als ein Sichhineinversetzen in die wirklichen Gefühle oder die Lebenslage von Ines verstanden werden kann – in dieser Hinsicht erscheint er auf komische Weise empathiefrei. Toni Erdmanns Empathie zielt vielmehr auf ihre das eigene verengte Selbstverständnis transzendierenden Möglichkeiten und somit auf ihre Freiheit. Starting from the initial question which forms of empathy are included in the making of a comedy, it is argued that comedy requires ›cultural emphathy‹, i.e. a clear sense of what expectations and reactions would be triggered among the public by certain topics and performances. The comic effects of slapstick and other forms of situational comedy in association with family configurations are attributed to our capacity to put ourselves into the awkward situations of the protagonists and, at the same time, to adopt the perspective of the uninvolved spectator. Subsequently the film comedy ›Toni Erdmann‹ is examined as a special case of remarriage comedy which represents a reflection upon empathy. It is argued that the protagonist Winfried, in the context of the process of education which is typical for remarriage comedies, does not feel emphathy for the protagonist Ines with regard to her actual feelings and living conditions (on the contrary, some comical effects derive from his refusal of empathy). His emphathy is rather directed towards those of her possibilities and capacities which transcend her actual image of herself; in other words, it is directed towards her freedom. (shrink)

El marco de discusión se plantea a partir de Thomas Münzer, teólogo de la revolución [1921] de Bloch, en vistas de cotejarlo con los escritos de Benjamin de la época. Se pondrá a (...) prueba la hipótesis de que sus reapropiaciones del mesianismo convergen en sus consideraciones sobre la historia, aunque no obturan sus diferencias en relación al sujeto histórico; éstas se traducen en distancias políticas que dan cuenta del escenario heterogéneo al interior de la izquierda alemana en el período 1920-1921. En los últimos años, la proliferación de experiencias vinculadas al desarrollo de emprendimientos productivos generó transformaciones en relación al modo de insertarse laboralmente en el mercado. Tal es el caso de los diseñadores, quienes en su mayoría han orientado su desempeño profesional en la búsqueda de un desarrollo de trabajo autónomo, no sujetos a modalidades de dependencia en su relación laboral.Esta búsqueda se enmarca en un contexto de visibilidad del fenómeno del “diseño independiente”, evidenciado principalmente a partir de la última (...) década en nuestro país.En el caso de los diseñadores industriales, la elección de un modelo autogestivo de inserción cuestiona la orientación “industrial” avalada por la Universidad, lo cual evidencia dos instancias: por un lado, la necesidad de incorporar a los estudios una formación orientada a la autoproducción; y por otro, la situación de ambigüedad planteada en el seno de la identidad del egresado, cuya formación “industrial” se ve contrapuesta a una realidad de inserción múltiple. Esta cuestión incide en la propia configuración identitaria de estos profesionales.Este trabajo busca, entonces, dar cuenta de esta problemática, basada en la investigación que dio lugar a la tesis doctoral orientada al análisis de la inserción laboral de los diseñadores industriales egresados de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. La metodología de esta investigación fue de tipo cualitativa y los datos fueron producidos a partir de diversas entrevistas en profundidad realizadas a diseñadores industriales egresados de esta Universidad.Se propuso, a partir de este trabajo, contribuir a la construcción de conocimiento de una temática escasamente abordada en el ámbito de las ciencias sociales, como es el diseño, y específicamente la disciplina del diseño industrial, a fin de indagar en la inserción laboral de estos profesionales, en tanto actores ciertamente relevantes de la producción cultural de la sociedad contemporánea. By this I mean the effort to identify the legal norms on which the existence and functioning of binding precedents depend and to show that these norms constitute a group of Hohfeldian legal relations between the courts whose precedents must be followed, the courts that must follow them, and the individuals whose (...) legal situations are as a result modified by the observance and the breach of those precedents. Wittgenstein's views on action and the will changed throughout his philosophical writings, although there are common themes to be found within this evolution. This chapter concerns his later views on action and the will, as expressed in remarks on these topics mainly in Philosophical Investigations. It explores some core themes in those remarks and examines how some of these were taken up and developed by Wittgenstein's student Elizabeth Anscombe, in her influential monograph Intention. Wittgenstein was concerned with offering a characterization (...) of the concepts of voluntary and intentional action that escaped certain familiar philosophical temptations. In the Investigations, Wittgenstein wrote: “When people talk about the possibility of foreknowledge of the future they always forget the fact of the prediction of one's own voluntary movements”. A common thread in their discussion is a conviction in “the uselessness of an introspective explanation of intention”, of the idea that an intention is “a particular feeling, an inner experience”. En este artículo me dispongo a recuperar la experiencia de investigar la vida de seis profesores memorables de la Escuela de Educación Secundaria Nº19 de la ciudad de Mar del Plata, dando cuenta del giro sensorial que dio la investigación al tematizar la intimidad de quién la narra. Identificar las tramas que intervienen en la composición de la memorabilidad en las biografías de los profesores memorables, no fue un proceso directivo, desde arriba y a priori, sino que por el contrario (...) implicó una íntima relación de valorización entre la narradora y los profesores de nuestras prácticas docentes. En cuyo devenir pude reconocer las implicancias de mi propia biografía escolar y profesional, entrenando mi voz de investigadora se coló mi voz de profesora y de cantante, está última en analogía con el lenguaje musical posibilitó relatos consentidos con la intimidad de esta investigación. El artículo versa sobre la necesidad de la filosofía del derecho en el presentey en el futuro. Se expone la perennidad de los temas sobre los que seocupa esta materia, definiéndola como ciencia de lo razonable. Entre lasmúltiples cuestiones para las que la filosofía del derecho es imprescindibleuna de ellas es la interpretación jurídica que realizan los jueces. Las distintasteorías que se han elaborado a lo largo de los dos últimos siglos, especialmentedesde la ilustración, han dado lugar a una reflexión (...) sobre la argumentaciónjudicial, que sigue desempeñando un lugar crucial en laenseñanza de estas materias en las facultades de derecho y en los operadoresjurídicos. De ahí que la filosofía del derecho siga siendo un instrumentoimprescindible en el presente y en el futuro de nuestras sociedades, quequeda corroborado por la experiencia de la autora, catedrática de filosofíadel derecho y juez durante estos cinco últimos años en el Tribunal Europeode Derechos Humanos en Estrasburgo. The doctrine of motion elaborated by Albert the Great has often been interpreted in the light of the debate, which developed in the 14th century, on the alternative between motion as a forma fluens, according to the Avicennian approach, or as a fluxus formae, more in line with Averroes’ position. Projecting this alternative onto Albert retrospectively, however, does not seem to be very productive for at least two reasons: (i) there is not a sufficient textual basis to affirm that he (...) understood the syntagmas forma fluens / fluxus formae as indices of two different and opposing ways of interpreting physical motion; (ii) Albert actually proposes his own interpretation of motion that does not really coincide with either Avicenna’s or Averroes’. In this article, I intend to show how Albert understands motion – particularly in his Physics – as a forma fluens, but in a determinate sense, i.e. as changing according to its being and not according to its essence (secundum suum esse et non secundum suam essentiam). This qualification means that Albert’s position does not coincide in a strict sense with either Avicenna’s or Averroes’, and must instead be understood in close connection with Albert’s doctrine of incohatio formae and the presence, in matter, of a kind of ‘intellectual appetite’. My aim is thus to show how Albert found a way to inscribe the doctrine of the flow of form and the inchoative presence of forms in matter in a Neoplatonic emanationist system (mainly influenced by the Liber de causis) and to rethink the nature and function of the ‘giver of forms’ with respect to the Avicenna model. We point out that current belief revision operations can be used to revise non-monotonic theories and we propose a new operation, called permissive belief revision. The underlying idea of permissive belief revision consists of instead of abandoning some beliefs during a revision, transforming those beliefs into weaker ones, while still keeping the resulting belief set consistent. This framework allows us to keep more beliefs than what is usual using existing belief base-based revision theories.

Though judges and lawyers encourage claimants to settle disputes out of courts, lawyers may struggle managing out-of-court dispute resolution processes. Some of the dispute management struggles are related to emotions of clients. One of the reasons why it may be difficult to manage a client’s emotions is because out-of-court disputes require a different communication skillset from lawyers. The following note features some advice for law students on how to incorporate compassionate communication methods in personal injury disputes. Personal injury disputes may (...) be emotionally challenging for clients. Such challenges may manifest in communication issues and prolonged suffering of clients. Yet, both students and academics may dismiss the importance of soft-skill development in due course of legal education. As lawyer-socialization institutions, law schools have a duty to foster skills that are necessary to successfully assist clients in emotionally challenging disputes. This contribution discusses the notion of human suffering and compassion-based counselling scholarship in relation to personal injury disputes. The paper advocates for normalizing emotions in personal injury disputes, and through testimonials of Michigan lawyers, presents real life examples of how lawyers can communicate compassionately with their clients. Law students can benefit from learning about real-life examples of communication patterns between lawyers and clients to have better conversations with their clients. (shrink)

The proposal of the research is to review and analyse the role of the media as constructors of social imaginaries, and to do so, we will analyse the power of the audiovisual industry to create and re-create stereotypes about lesbians, and as generators of a social imaginary, we will also analyse lesbian plots and characters, through which direct messages are sent to society in general, but also to lesbians.Finally, after conducting discussion groups and focus groups with lesbians who have participated (...) in the research, we present some conclusions. It seems natural to think that there are aesthetic reasons for action and that an artist must be guided by such reasons as he or she begins work on the canvas or poem or symphony or marble. This latter supposition seems at odds, however, not only with classical inspiration theory but also with the views of one of the last century’s most important philosophers of art, R. G. Collingwood. We propose an account of acting for an aesthetic reason inspired by (...) G. E. M. Anscombe’s Intention, specifically by her concept of ‘practical knowledge’, which we believe can accommodate Collingwood’s reservations about the sort of knowledge of their ends, and of the means to those ends, which artists have as they engage in their creative activity. El artículo se pregunta por el problema del Otro en América Latina, considerando la reflexión de Lévinas y de Ortega y Gasset a partir de la fenomenología de Husserl. El examen recae en dos figuras paradigmáticas de la modernidad barroca: la así denominada Malinche y Juana Inés de la Cruz, teniendo como telón de fondo el debate entre Ginés de Sepúlveda y Bartolomé de las Casas acerca de la humanidad o animalidad de los así llamados indígenas. Se le presta especial (...) atención a las perspectivas adoptadas por Tzvetan Todorov, Leopoldo Zea, Octavio Paz y Bolívar Echeverría sobre las figuras mencionadas. (shrink)

Using a design-based research approach, we studied ways to advance opportunities for children and families to engage in engineering design practices in an informal educational setting. 213 families with 5–11-year-old children were observed as they visited a tinkering exhibit at a children’s museum during one of three iterations of a program posing an engineering design challenge. Children’s narrative reflections about their experience were recorded immediately after tinkering. Across iterations of the program, changes to the exhibit design and facilitation provided by (...) museum staff corresponded to increased families’ engagement in key engineering practices. In the latter two cycles of the program, families engaged in the most testing, and in turn, redesigning. Further, in the latter cycles, the more children engaged in testing and retesting during tinkering, the more their narratives contained engineering-related content. The results advance understanding and the evidence base for educational practices that can promote engineering learning opportunities for children. (shrink)

Geschlecht und Gewalt, das Thema dieses Bandes, betrifft nicht nur die Frage nach den Charakteristika und Ursachen sexueller Aggression, sondern auch die Frage nach angeblichen geschlechtsspezifischen Formen der Aggression. Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit beidem und diskutiert sie als Teil von begrifflichen Ausweitungen der Kampfzone, d.h. der Erweiterungen des Aggressionsbegriffs im Verlauf der wissenschaftlichen Aggressionsforschung der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Der Beitrag zeigt unter Anderem: was als Aggression wahrgenommen wird und in der Wissenschaft als solche gezählt wird, verändert (...) sich mit der Gesellschaft. Dabei wird aus epistemologischer bzw. wissenschaftsphilosophischer Perspektive gezeigt, wie sich rassistische, Status-, und Geschlechtsstereotype auf begriffliche Entscheidungen in wissenschaftlicher Forschung auswirken und somit die wissenschaftliche Arbeit am Begriff beeinflussen können. Esses escritos compartilham experiências de entrada em campo etnográfico com pesquisas com crianças ciganas do acampamento Mathias, no município de Quissamã, estado do Rio de Janeiro. O estudo, ainda em andamento, se justifica pela urgência em respeitar o povo cigano e compreender suas demandas. Pretendemos também, como nossa pesquisa e através de nossa fotoetnografia miúda, ampliar espaços nos chamados Estudos das Infância. Urge que os grupos ciganos sejam vistos pelos seus valores, seus modos de vida e suas narrativas, incluindo as (...) narrativas das crianças. (shrink)

El presente texto propone una articulación entre las principales nociones del posfundacionalismo de Jean Luc-Nancy, Alain Badiou, Claude Lefort y Ernesto Laclau y lo que denomino “vitalismo dialectico” de Vladimir Safatle. El cruce planteado es significativo en tanto se considera que la propuesta de Safatle (en obras como El circuito de los afectos [2019] y A paixão do negativo [2006]) viene a habilitar la inscripción del principal axioma teórico posfundacionalista, “la ausencia de fundamento último”, en la propia constitución psicoafectiva del (...) sujeto. Esta operación daría lugar a una biopolítica posfundacional emancipatoria posible de encarnar nuevos cuerpos o formas de subjetivación. (shrink)

O artigo trata da famosa nota do ensaio Dos Caracteres Nacionais, na qual Hume afirma suspeitar que os negros são inferiores aos brancos. No lugar de perguntar o quanto o racismo expresso na nota penetra na obra, como se costuma fazer, coloca-se outra questão: o que Hume tem a dizer sobre o conteúdo da nota, levando em conta seu contexto de enunciação? Como ele situa no ensaio Dos Caracteres nacionais o seu próprio racismo? A partir de uma análise do ensaio (...) e da nota, pretende-se mostrar que a filosofia de Hume oferece os elementos e os conceitos precisos para que se compreenda o conteúdo da nota como um preconceito europeu.
