Paraphrase de la métaphysique d'Aristote, livre Lambda.Themistius & Rémi Brague - 1999 - Paris: J. Vrin. Edited by Rémi Brague.

    Paraphrase of Book Lambda, 9.Themistius of Paphlagonia & Ilyas Altuner - 2019 - Entelekya Logico-Metaphysical Review 3 (2):53-60.
What makes Book Lambda the most important book of Metaphysics is to mention the fundamental substance of being. Therefore, Book Lambda is a book that has been regarded as valuable and has been studied extensively. Arabic translations of this book were in high demand in the Islamic world. We have also considered Arabic metaphysical translations, especially the translation of Book Lambda. The translation you will read is a commentary of the ninth chapter of Book Lambda by Themistius. The Greek (...)

    On Aristotle's On the soul.Themistius & Robert B. Todd - 1996 - Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press. Edited by Robert B. Todd.
Themistius ran his philosophical school in Constantinople in the middle of the fourth century A.D. His paraphrases of Aristotle's writings are unlike the elaborate commentaries produced by Alexander of Aphrodisias, or the later Neoplatonists Simplicius and Philoponus. His aim was to provide a clear and independent restatement of Aristotle's text which would be accessible as an elementary exegesis. But he also discusses important philosophical problems, reports and disagrees with other commentaries including the lost commentary of Porphyry, and offers interpretations (...)

    Relevance of Embodied Practice to Philosophical Understanding.Hieronymus Wold - 2024 - Stance 17 (1):62-73.
In this paper I argue that meditation has a direct bearing upon philosophical discourse by enabling us to distance ourselves from the basic structure of subjectivity that often limits the scope of reason. Recent neurobiological hypotheses are discussed in conjunction with the method of hermeneutic phenomenology to argue that interpretations on the level of our neurobiology underly and construct our experience of ourselves as subjects and the sense of explicit rational understanding that arises from it. This implies that prediscursive embodied (...)

The Relation Between Cognitively Measured Executive Functions and Reported Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Use in Adult Online Distance Education.Celeste Meijs, Hieronymus J. M. Gijselaers, Kate M. Xu, Paul A. Kirschner & Renate H. M. De Groot - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
While executive functions and self-regulated learning strategy use have been found to be related in several populations, this relationship has not been studied in adult online distance education. This is surprising as self-regulation, and thus using such strategies, is very important here. In this setting, we studied the relation between basic executive functions and reported SRL-strategy use within a correlational design with 889 adult online distance students. In this study, we performed regression analyses and took age and processing speed into (...)

Measuring Perseverance and Passion in Distance Education Students: Psychometric Properties of the Grit Questionnaire and Associations With Academic Performance.Kate M. Xu, Celeste Meijs, Hieronymus J. M. Gijselaers, Joyce Neroni & Renate H. M. de Groot - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
With modern technological advances, distance education has become an increasingly important education delivery medium for, for example, the higher education provided by open universities. Among predictive factors of successful learning in distance education, the effects of non-cognitive skills are less explored. Grit, the dispositional tendency to sustain trait-level passion and long-term goals, has raised much research interest and gained importance for predicting academic achievement. The Grit Questionnaire, measuring Perseverance of Effort and Consistency of Interests, has been shown to be a (...)

This article defines Themistius’ exegesis of the human intellect as a prodromic noetics, that is, a psychology in which the former psychological function is naturally predisposed, as a matter, to the action of the latter one, which acts as a form. This doctrine, which I claim to stem from Plato’s Timaeus, makes sense of hylomorphism by allowing separate psychological functions both to combine to non-separate ones and to unify cognitive functions and their cognitive objects. At the same time, Themistian (...)

Themistius against Porphyry (?) On ‘why we do not remember’.Robert Roreitner - 2021 - Classical Quarterly 71 (1):379-385.
This article sheds new light on Themistius’ argument in what is philosophically the most original section of his extant work, namely On Aristotle's On the Soul 100.16–109.3: here, Themistius offers a systematic interpretation of Aristotle's ‘agent’ intellect and its ‘potential’ and ‘passive’ counterparts. A solution to two textual difficulties at 101.36–102.2 is proposed, supported by the Arabic translation. This allows us to see that Themistius engages at length with a Platonizing reading of the enigmatic final lines of (...)

Themistius on concept acquisition and knowledge of essences.Myrna Gabbe - 2010 - Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie 92 (3):215-235.
Themistius's (ca. 317–ca. 388 C.E.) paraphrase of the De Anima is an influential and important work; however, it is not now regarded as profound or original and thereby suffers from neglect. I argue that Themistius is misunderstood on the matter of Aristotle's productive and potential intellects. It is commonly held that Themistius gives to the productive intellect the role of illuminating images in order to produce universal thoughts in the potential intellect with epistemic certainty. I argue that (...)

Themistius’ Paraphrase of Posterior Analytics 71a17-b8.Martin Achard - 2008 - Laval Théologique et Philosophique 64 (1):19-34.

Themistius on Concept Formation.Robert Roreitner - 2021 - Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie 103 (4):670-703.
This paper reconstructs the account of concept formation developed in the 4th Century A.D. by Themistius in the most ancient extant commentary on Aristotle’s Posterior Analytics. Themistius’ account can be contrasted with two widespread modern interpretations of Aristotle. Unlike psychological empiricists, Themistius ascribes an active role in concept formation to our innate capacity of understanding. Unlike intuitionists, he would not be satisfied by saying that νοῦς “intuits” or “spots” concepts. Rather, the question is what makes our νοῦς (...)

    Themistius on Evil.Guy Guldentops - 2001 - Phronesis 46 (2):189-208.
Although Themistius does not develop a theodicy, his observations on evil are fairly consistent. Both in his paraphrases of Aristotle and in his speeches, he argues that since God is the intelligent and powerful cause of all good things in the universe, evil is due to the στέρησις in matter and to the ἄνοιι of human beings. Despite some (Neo-)Platonic and Stoic influences, Themistius defends a basically Peripatetic world-view, in which evil is minimized.

  42. Pseudo-Themistius, pros basilea: A false attribution.Lieve Van Hoof & Peter Van Nuffelen - 2011 - Byzantion 81:412-423.
A thirteenth-century manuscript attributes a short fragment of a speech Pros Basilea to the fourth-century orator Themistius. Its editors argue that the piece is authentic and was addressed to Theodosius I. In fact, style and vocabulary, geographical references, and the way the divinity of the emperor is highlighted, strongly argue against its authenticity. The fragment must be dated much later than the fourth century: this article suggests a date in the reign of Justinian.
