Quantum theory determines the evolution of quantum states between quantum jumps. Quantum theory also allows us to calculate rates of quantum jumps and, on a probabilistic level, the outcomes of those quantum jumps. Both quantum jumps and the continuous evolution of quantum states are important in the time evolution of quantum systems, and the scattering matrix ties those seemingly disparate concepts together. Indeed, quantum jumps are so essential in quantum dynamics that we should refocus discussion of a quantum ontology on (...) the power and principal limitations of our knowledge about quantum jumps as encoded in the scattering matrix. On the one hand, one might argue that the lack of a dynamical resolution of quantum jumps indicates an inherent incompleteness of the theory. However, we would rather submit that quantum theory is complete and that the observations indicate a principal limitation to the description of the universe as a smoothly evolving dynamical system. The modern understanding of quantum jumps therefore calls for updates to the Copenhagen interpretation instead of modifications of quantum theory. (shrink)

Data analytics and data-driven approaches in Machine Learning are now among the most hailed computing technologies in many industrial domains. One major application is predictive analytics, which is used to predict sensitive attributes, future behavior, or cost, risk and utility functions associated with target groups or individuals based on large sets of behavioral and usage data. This paper stresses the severe ethical and data protection implications of predictive analytics if it is used to predict sensitive information about single individuals or (...) treat individuals differently based on the data many unrelated individuals provided. To tackle these concerns in an applied ethics, first, the paper introduces the concept of “predictive privacy” to formulate an ethical principle protecting individuals and groups against differential treatment based on Machine Learning and Big Data analytics. Secondly, it analyses the typical data processing cycle of predictive systems to provide a step-by-step discussion of ethical implications, locating occurrences of predictive privacy violations. Thirdly, the paper sheds light on what is qualitatively new in the way predictive analytics challenges ethical principles such as human dignity and the (liberal) notion of individual privacy. These new challenges arise when predictive systems transform statistical inferences, which provide knowledge about the cohort of training data donors, into individual predictions, thereby crossing what I call the “prediction gap”. Finally, the paper summarizes that data protection in the age of predictive analytics is a collective matter as we face situations where an individual’s (or group’s) privacy is violated using dataotherindividuals provide about themselves, possibly even anonymously. Die Unterscheidung von Körper und Seele war wohl einer der bedeutendsten Einschnitte in der Geschichte der Ideen. Wie sich dies in Abhängigkeit von den sozialen Strukturen entwickelte, wird hier für verschiedene Kulturen (u. a. "primitive" Gesellschaften, Alter Orient, Indien, die klassische Antike, Christentum) gezeigt. In vielen "einfachen" Gesellschaften ohne ausgeprägtes Zentrum werden dem Menschen mehrere Seelen zugeschrieben, die auf verschiedene Weise entstehen und beim Tod an verschiedene Orte gehen. In seinen Seelenreisen handelt der Schamane z. B. für die Jagd den (...) Seelentausch zwischen Mensch und Tier aus und holt die Seelen der Kinder aus dem Jenseits. Die Hochkulturen schreiben dem Menschen oft nur eine Seele zu, die das ihn steuernde Zentrum bildet. Sie wird -- entsprechend der Schichtung der Gesellschaft -- als hierarchisch geordnetes System begriffen -- mit der Vernunft oben, den Emotionen und Trieben unten. Die Seelenreise wird vorrangig für die nachtodliche Vergeltung genutzt. Strafe und Belohnung sind affirmativ auf die soziale Schichtung bezogen (z. B. im vedischen Reinkarnationsglauben) oder ein Protest dagegen (im frühen Christentum). Wenn sich dies in Weltablehnung manifestiert, gerät die Seele in Gegensatz zum Körper, der u. U. sogar aus der Definition des Menschen ausgeschlossen wird. Zeugung, Embryonalentwicklung und Geburt werden nun nicht selten als schwierige, ja sogar gewaltsame Zusammenfügung gegensätzlicher Bestandteile verstanden. Unter dieser Fragestellung werden die Theorien zur Entstehung der Seele in Schöpfung und Zeugung in ihren Widersprüchen zwischen religiösem Dogma und philosophischer Logik dargestellt."-- Back cover. Lange Zeit galt Schrift als aufgeschriebene mündliche Sprache. Doch was geschieht, wenn eine mathematische Gleichung gelöst und Musik mit Noten komponiert wird, wenn ein Autor an seinem Text feilt, die Konkrete Poesie ein Schriftspiel entfaltet, der genetische Code als Buchstabenfolge sequenziert wird, der Kabbalist Buchstaben permutiert oder der Informatiker ein Computerprogramm schreibt? Schriften sind mehr als Aufschreibsysteme für Gesprochenes; stets bergen sie lautsprachenneutrale Aspekte. Der Begriff "Schriftbildlichkeit" zielt auf einen Perspektivenwechsel: die Überwindung eines phonographisch reduzierten und eurozentrisch verengten Schriftkonzeptes. Jenseits (...) der Dichotomie von Sprache und Bild vereinigen sich in Schriften diskursive und ikonische Merkmale – und das gilt für alphabetische wie nichtalphabetische Schriften. Schriften eröffnen Experimentierräume der kognitiven wie der ästhetischen Erfahrung. European citizenship is a nested membership in a multilevel polity that operates at member state and union levels. A normative theory of supranational citizenship will necessarily be informed by the EU as the only present case and will be addressed to the EU in most of its prescriptions, but should still develop a model sufficiently general to potentially apply to other regional unions as well. The Article first describes three basic characteristics of such a polity — democratic representation at the (...) supranational level, internal freedom of movement between member states, and regional limits to external geographic expansion — and argues that a multiplication of such regional unions would contribute to a more just and peaceful international order. Building on this modification of Kant’s model for a global confederation of republics, the contribution explores three alternative approaches for strengthening democratic citizenship in the European Union: a statist approach that aims at transforming the EU into a federal state, a unionist approach whose goal is to strengthen union citizenship vis-a`-vis member state nationality, and a pluralist one that specifies citizenship norms for each level and balances them with each other on the basis of the current state of federal integration. These approaches are then compared with regard to their implications for three policy questions: general status differences and inequality of rights amongst EU citizens living in their country of nationality, EU citizens residing in other member states, third-country nationals, and EU citizens residing outside the territory of the Union; voting rights in European, national, and local elections; and access to Union citizenship and to member state nationality. The growing concentration of wealth has acquired a new urgency in recent years. One particular view in this context is developed by Ingrid Robeyns in her ground-breaking work on limitarianism. According to this view, no one should have more than a certain amount of valuable goods, such as income and wealth. The contributors to this symposium, Brian Berkey, David Axelsen and Lasse Nielsen, Jessica Flanigan and Christopher Freiman, and Lena Halldenius, critically examine various aspects of limitarianism. In particular, they examine (...) how limitarianism should be interpreted and developed as a principle of justice, on what reasons speak in favour and against limitarianism, and on how limitarianism relates to other principles of distributive justice. Our hope is that this symposium will contribute to the ongoing debate in political philosophy about the concentration of wealth and economic justice. (shrink)

We study the modal properties of intuitionistic modal logics that belong to the provability logic or the preservativity logic of Heyting Arithmetic. We describe the □-fragment of some preservativity logics and we present fixed point theorems for the logics iL and iPL, and show that they imply the Beth property. These results imply that the fixed point theorem and the Beth property hold for both the provability and preservativity logic of Heyting Arithmetic. We present a frame correspondence result for the (...) preservativity principle Wp that is related to an extension of Löb's principle. (shrink)

Grammatical Evolution (GE) has a long history in evolutionary computation. Central to the behaviour of GE is the use of a linear representation and grammar to map individuals from search spaces into problem spaces. This genotype to phenotype mapping is often argued as a distinguishing property of GE relative to other techniques, such as context-free grammar genetic programming (CFG-GP). Since its initial description, GE research has attempted to incorporate information from the grammar into crossover, mutation, and individual initialisation, blurring the (...) distinction between genotype and phenotype and creating GE variants closer to CFG-GP. This is argued to provide GE with the "best of both worlds", allowing degrees of grammatical bias to be introduced into operators to best suit the given problem. This paper examines the behaviour of three grammar-based search methods on several problems from previous GE research. It is shown that, unlike CFG-GP, the performance of "pure" GE on the examined problems closely resembles that of random search. The results suggest that further work is required to determine the cases where the "best of both worlds" of GE are required over a straight CFG-GP approach. (shrink)

Ausgehend von der Tatsache, daß eine Kommunikation zwischen den verschiedenen Richtungen der Philosophie in Deutschland entweder gar nicht stattfindet oder bestimmten heutzutage zu fordernden Rationalitätsstandards nicht genügt, wird in einem ersten allgemeinen Teil auf die großen Vor- und geringen Nachteile aufmerksam gemacht, die ein vor allem an gewissen fundamentalen Einsichten der sprachanalytischen Philosophie orientiertermethodischer Minimalkonsens mit sich brächte, und in einem spezielleren und wichtigeren zweiten Teil eine sprachphilosophische Lokalisation aller Arten von Inexaktheiten, die in normalsprachlichen (nicht nur philosophischen) Texten vorkommen (...) können, mit dem praktischen Ziel vorgenommen, deren Vermeidung — soweit diese theoretisch überhaupt möglich ist — als zentralen Bestandteil des genannten Konsenses zu empfehlen. This book traces a dialectic relationship between “politics” and “antipolitics,” the first, as used here, being akin to philosophy as an activity of open inquiry, plural democracy, and truth-finding, and the latter in the realm of ideology, technocracy, and presupposed certainties. It returns back to the emergence of a New Left movement in the 1960s in order to follow the history of this relationship since then. It addresses contemporary debates by looking to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the (...) Soviet Bloc, and asking in the wake of that: what is a revolution? Finally, it draws on these analyses to examine the age of terrorism after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and resounds with a call to pursue democracy and real politics in the face of new forms of antipolitics. In the long history of the substance–problem – from Aristotle to e.g. David Wiggins – very different analytical approaches have fostered its deepening and its clearing step by step. Not only titular Analytical Philosophers, also Analytical Philosophers avant la lettre, e.g. Kant, have contributed to this kind of approach. In the following text it is to be shown how these contributions switch fruitfully between ontological, semantical (res. grammatical), epistemological and logical aspects.

Das Thema wirft nicht nur juristische oder sozialpolitische, sondern auch ethische Fragen auf. Bislang gab es dazu in Deutschland jedoch nur wenig Reflexion. Bewertungen wurden von der Ärzteschaft vor allem Politikern und Juristen überlassen. Dabei bleibt die Frage der strafbaren Bestechlichkeit im Kern ein Problem, das Ärzteschaft (...) und Medizinethik betrifft. Im Alltag ist es oft schwer zu entscheiden, wann es sich bei Zuwendungen um mögliche Bestechung handelt. Die Übergänge zwischen dem unproblematischen Annehmen kleiner Geschenke und Korruption sind fließend. Es bleibt fast ausschließlich dem moralischen Empfinden der Ärzte überlassen, die Grenze zwischen Kooperation und Korruption im Umgang mit Pharmaunternehmen zu ziehen: Unausweichlich vorhandene Konflikte zwischen privaten und berufsethischen Interessen müssen von den Ärzten angesichts unzureichender allgemeingültiger Richtlinien für angemessenes Verhalten individuell gelöst werden. Das Bewusstsein für die sozialpolitische und berufsethische Bedeutung von Interessenkonflikten unter Ärzten und Studierenden sollte erhöht werden. Eine offensivere Auseinandersetzung mit der Frage der Bestechlichkeit in der Medizin ist wünschenswert und erforderlich. (shrink)

This paper aims to offer an analysis of rape culture through social cognitivism, specially using the moral disengagement mechanisms developed by Albert Bandura. Through this perspective, we intend to critically debate the approaches that explain the recurrence of rape by the evolutionary prism, as proposed by Steven Pinker. Our hypothesis, developed throughout the text, is that rape is a social phenomenon, a consequence of legal, linguistic and cultural permissiveness of violence against women in social contexts marked by sexism and misogyny.
