Prices in Financial Markets.Michael U. Dothan - 1990 - Oxford University Press USA.
This book offers a unified treatment of selected topics in the theory of financial markets. Starting with discrete time models, Dothan introduces discrete time stochastic calculus and discrete martingale methods of intuitive simplicity to characterize attainability, completeness, pricing, and the relationship between risk and return in financial markets. Subsequently, he uses the intuition developed in conjunction with the discrete time theory to introduce continuous time calculus for continuous, jump, and mixed continuous-jump processes, and to deal with attainability, completeness, pricing, (...)

Assessing the Strengths and Weaknesses of Large Language Models.Shalom Lappin - 2023 - Journal of Logic, Language and Information 33 (1):9-20.
The transformers that drive chatbots and other AI systems constitute large language models (LLMs). These are currently the focus of a lively discussion in both the scientific literature and the popular media. This discussion ranges from hyperbolic claims that attribute general intelligence and sentience to LLMs, to the skeptical view that these devices are no more than “stochastic parrots”. I present an overview of some of the weak arguments that have been presented against LLMs, and I consider several of the (...)

Maimonides: A Radical Religious Philosopher.Shalom Sadik - 2023 - Piscataway, NJ, UDA: Gorgias Press.
Was Maimonides a radical philosopher who subtly argued for a naturalist world and who saw the obligation to keep the Torah's commandments as a social and moral obligation - or was he a conservative Jewish believer who only tried to formulate philosophical arguments in favour of a revealed religion? This question has been central to the interpretation of Maimonides from the 12th century until modern times. In the four chapters of this book, Shalom Sadik argues for a radical philosophical (...)

    Deep Learning and Linguistic Representation.Shalom Lappin - 2021 - Chapman & Hall/Crc.
The application of deep learning methods to problems in natural language processing has generated significant progress across a wide range of natural language processing tasks. For some of these applications, deep learning models now approach or surpass human performance. While the success of this approach has transformed the engineering methods of machine learning in artificial intelligence, the significance of these achievements for the modelling of human learning and representation remains unclear. Deep Learning and Linguistic Representation looks at the application of (...)

Trace deletion and friederici's (1995) model of syntactic processing.Dorit Ben Shalom - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (1):22-23.
This commentary discusses the relation between Grodzinsky's target article and Friederici's (1995) model of syntactic processing. The two models can be made more compatible if it is assumed that people with Broca's aphasia have a problem in trace construction rather than trace deletion, and that the process of trace construction takes place during the second early syntactic substage of Friederici's model.

    A New Model of Reasoning by Analogy.Shai Dothan - 2023 - Jus Cogens 5 (1):33-58.
The paper suggests a novel methodology for determining the state of legal doctrine on a particular issue by legal scholars. This methodology is inspired by the philosophical field of phenomenology. In particular, the tool of eidetic reduction developed by Edmund Husserl is applied to reach inter-subjectively valid assessments of doctrine. The methodology developed here argues that scholars who wish to discover legal doctrine on a particular issue need to first define general paradigms that explain the relevant legal field. Then, they (...)

How International Courts Enhance Their Legitimacy.Shai Dothan - 2013 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 14 (2):455-478.
International courts strive to enhance their legitimacy, that is, they would like the members of the international community to perceive their judgments as just, correct and unbiased even if they do not agree with their specific content. This Article argues that international courts take into account the actors they interact with, the norms they apply, and the conditions they operate under as they try to enhance their legitimacy. It demonstrates strategic behavior towards that end in the judgments of two prominent (...)

Following participation in Dr. Yair Caspi’s “Psychology in Judaism” workshop, the writers contemplate whether the teaching of Caspi’s model in academic settings could become simultaneously a fresh addition to interdisciplinary approaches to the teaching of Judaism in Israeli Academic life, and an academic addition to the contemporary trend to Jewish renewal in Israeli society. The model is based on weekly facilitated workshops in which participants both reflect on and discuss their lives and also explore unique interpretations of Jewish texts and (...)

    Killing in War and Moral Equality.Stephen R. Shalom - 2011 - Journal of Moral Philosophy 8 (4):495-512.
Do innocent civilians who will be killed in a justified attack on a nearby military target have a right to defend themselves by shooting down the bomber pilot? I argue that they do not, and that Jeff McMahan's view that they do have such a right—that there is a moral equivalence between pilot and civilian—is flawed in much the same way that Michael Walzer's moral equivalence of combatants—a position that McMahan has so persuasively refuted—is flawed.

    A Prolegomenon to What Is Called the "Soul".Albert Shalom - 1983 - Review of Metaphysics 36 (3):569 - 590.
To single out "time" or "temporality" as the most important concept within a philosophical framework attempting to delineate "reality" immediately raises the question of how to situate temporality itself. I will distinguish only two ways of situating time, because they both appear to be simple and straightforward, and because they establish a sufficient framework for the incipient theory I propose briefly elaborating. On the one hand, temporality can certainly be situated in terms of cosmological and biological evolution. And on the (...)

    Culture and Psychoanalysis.A. Shalom - 1986 - Review of Metaphysics 39 (4):715 - 727.
FOR THE PURPOSES of this paper, I will interpret the word "culture" to refer, at its most basic level, to the fundamental categories in terms of which the peoples of that culture spontaneously express their most basic presuppositions. These fundamental categories, or basic presuppositions, designate the specific ways of conceiving reality which are expressed by the sense of the categories themselves. From the standpoint adopted here, they are not to be regarded as impositions of something called "the mind": neither in (...)

    Subjectivity.Albert Shalom - 1984 - Review of Metaphysics 38 (2):227 - 273.
THE fundamental metaphysical problem concerning any and all organisms capable of subjective experience is the problem of explaining the source and nature of subjectivity itself. Not many solutions have been proposed, but it is important to recognize from the start that every solution which has been proposed has depended on a framework consisting of relatively few fundamental concepts and that it is these fundamental concepts which have served to define both the problem and the solution proposed.

Although "Love your fellow as yourself" is, as Rabbi Akiva taught, the great underlying principle of the Torah, achieving the experience of this love is a profound challenge for most people. Human personality is instead often given to baseless hatred. The discourse Heichaltzu (lit., "Arm yourselves") by the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe deals with the spiritual roots of such hatred, its practical consequences, and the remedies for it. Includes several related essays and letters, as well as extensive footnotes and references.

Generalized Quantifiers, Exception Phrases, and Logicality.Shalom Lappin - 1995 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 3 (2-3):203-222.
On the Fregean view of NP's, quantified NP's are represented as operator-variable structures while proper names are constants appearing in argument position. The Generalized Quantifier approach characterizes quantified NP's and names as elements of a unified syntactic category and semantic type. According to the Logicality Thesis, the distinction between quantified NP's, which undergo an operation of quantifier raising to yield operator-variable structures at Logical Form and non-quantified NP's, which appear in situ at LF, corresponds to a difference in logicality status.
