© 2015, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Genetic studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with the risk of prostate cancer. It remains unclear whether such genetic variants are associated with disease aggressiveness. The NCI-SPORE Genetics Working Group retrospectively collected clinicopathologic information and genotype data for 36 SNPs which at the time had been validated to be associated with PC risk from 25,674 cases with PC. Cases were grouped according to race, Gleason score and aggressiveness. Statistical analyses were used to compare the frequency (...)

What we bet on is not only tangible money, but also good mood.Hui-Fang Guo, Rui Tao, Ning Zhao, Hai-Ping Chen, Rui Zheng & L. I. Shu - 2022 - Cognition and Emotion 36 (7):1404-1419.
A surprisingly large number of lottery prizes go unclaimed every year. This leads us to suspect that what people bet on is not only money, but also good mood. We conducted three studies to explain, from an emotional perspective, why people play lottery games. We first conducted two survey studies to assess mood state reported by online (Study 1a) and offline lottery buyers (Study 1b) at different stages of lottery play. The results revealed that participants’ highest mood appeared before knowing (...)

Chinese Philosophers.Laurence C. Wu, Shu-Hsien Liu, David L. Hall, Francis Soo, Jonathan R. Herman, John Knoblock, Chad Hansen, Kwong-Loi Shun & Warren G. Frisina - 1991 - In Robert L. Arrington (ed.), A Companion to the Philosophers. Malden, Mass.: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 39–107.
Some of the authors of the essays on Chinese philosophers prefer the pin yin system of romanization for Chinese names and words, while others prefer the Wade‐Giles system. Given that both systems are in wide use today, important names and words are given in both their pin yin and Wade‐Giles formulations. The author's preference is printed first, followed by the alternative romanization within brackets.

Psychophysiological factors as predictors of second language writing achievement in a computer-based test.Shu-Ping Lee, Shujen Lee Chang, Hui-Kai Su, Zhen-Yang Cui & Shin-Da Lee - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Sleep quality, personality, and cognitive load potentially increase second language writing anxiety and subsequently affect SLW achievement. This study investigates the predictions of sleep quality, personality, and cognitive load toward SLW anxiety and achievement in a computer-based test. Participants included 172 voluntary undergraduates majoring in English as foreign language. SLW anxiety in a computer-based test, sleep disturbance, personality and cognitive load was assessed with the SLW Anxiety Inventory, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Type-D Personality, and cognitive load questionnaires. A structural equation (...)

Calling in Sick during the Reign of Gongsun Shu.J. Michael Farmer - 2022 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 140 (1):81.
Calling in sick to get out of work is a time-honored practice, and something of an art form in and of itself. Early and medieval Chinese texts are full of instances of individuals claiming illness to either excuse themselves from current positions, or to avoid appointments to office, a practice firmly situated in the rhetoric of reclusion. This paper focuses on several cases contained in Chang Qu’s 常璩 Huayang guo zhi 華陽國志 of men who made medical excuses to reject (...)

Application of Computer Simulation Optimization Algorithm in Waste Treatment of Drilling Engineering.Chang Shu & JiChuan Zhang - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-10.
The existing computer technology is used to conduct an in-depth study and analysis of drilling waste treatment, and the results are analyzed by computer simulation optimization algorithms. Based on the system theory, we define the research system, combine the unique characteristics of the technological innovation mechanism of drilling waste treatment, and use the internal and external factors affecting the technological innovation dynamics of drilling waste treatment, such as drilling waste treatment capacity, from the current actual situation. On this basis, factor (...)

Conflicts between mining companies and communities: Institutional environments and conflict resolution approaches.Chang Hoon Oh, Jiyoung Shin & Shuna Shu Ham Ho - 2023 - Business Ethics, the Environment and Responsibility 32 (2):638-656.
Although companies recognize the importance of social responsibility and community engagement, conflicts between companies and communities have been noticeably increasing. To better understand the role of institutional environments in company–community conflicts, we analyze two mining conflicts—Minera Yanacocha's Minas Conga extension project in Peru and Minera Los Pelambres' El Mauro Tailings Dam in Chile. Our findings imply that, to prevent negative consequences and alleviate company–community conflicts, mining companies should address underlying structural causes and pursue informal approaches in order to obtain and (...)

Validation of the Double Mediation Model of Workplace Well-Being on the Subjective Well-Being of Technological Employees.Shu-Ya Chang & Hsiang-Chen Hsu - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
In recent years, workplace well-being has been a popular research topic, because it is helpful to promote employees’ welfare, thereby bringing valuable personal and organizational outcomes. With the development of technology, the technology industry plays an important role in Taiwan. Although the salary and benefits provided by the technology industry are better than other industries, the work often requires a lot of time and effort. It is worth paying attention to whether a happy workplace will bring subjective well-being for the (...)

Association of Chinese herbal medicine use with the depression risk among the long-term breast cancer survivors: A longitudinal follow-up study.Shu-Yi Yang, Hanoch Livneh, Jing-Siang Jhang, Shu-Wen Yen, Hua-Lung Huang, Michael W. Y. Chan, Ming-Chi Lu, Chia-Chou Yeh, Chang-Kuo Wei & Tzung-Yi Tsai - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.

In this study, we focused solely on survivors of breast cancer at (...)

Experiencing affective music in eyes-closed and eyes-open states: an electroencephalography study.Yun-Hsuan Chang, You-Yun Lee, Keng-Chen Liang, I.-Ping Chen, Chen-Gia Tsai & Shulan Hsieh - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:148149.
In real life, listening to music may be associated with an eyes-closed or eyes-open state. The effect of eye state on listeners’ reaction to music has attracted some attention, but its influence on brain activity has not been fully investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the electroencephalographic (EEG) markers for the emotional valence of music in different eye states. Thirty participants listened to musical excerpts with different emotional content in the eyes-closed and eyes-open states. The results showed that participants (...)

Paternalistic Gratitude: The Theory and Politics of Confucian Political Obligation.Shu-Shan Lee - 2021 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 20 (4):635-659.
While researchers have offered remonstration-oriented, reciprocal, voluntary, and gratitude-based accounts of political obligation in classical Confucianism, I argue that these interpretations are either in conflict with the textual evidence or merely scratch the surface of Confucius’ theory of political obligation without fully elaborating its essence. Instead, I demonstrate that the theory of political obligation in Confucianism is a specific argument from paternalistic gratitude in which the people’s political obligation is analogically compared to children’s grateful duty to their parents. Moreover, I (...)
