Connecting phenotype to genotype: PheWAS-inspired analysis of autism spectrum disorder.John Matta, Daniel Dobrino, Dacosta Yeboah, Swade Howard, Yasser El-Manzalawy & Tayo Obafemi-Ajayi - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:960991.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is extremely heterogeneous clinically and genetically. There is a pressing need for a better understanding of the heterogeneity of ASD based on scientifically rigorous approaches centered on systematic evaluation of the clinical and research utility of both phenotype and genotype markers. This paper presents a holistic PheWAS-inspired method to identify meaningful associations between ASD phenotypes and genotypes. We generate two types of phenotype-phenotype (p-p) graphs: a direct graph that utilizes only phenotype data, and an indirect graph (...)

  2. Critical Reflections On Wiredu’s Consensual Democracy.Tayo Raymond Ezekiel Eegunlusi - 2023 - Thought and Practice: A Journal of the Philosophical Association of Kenya 8 (2):1-27.
This paper argues that Kwasi Wiredu’s consensual democracy is an inadequate alternative to liberal democracy in contemporary Africa because it neglects the beliefs in supernatural realities underpinning governance and political decisions in traditional societies on the continent. The paper holds that as evident in their worldviews and activities, traditional Africans do not depersonalise entities or segregate physical realities from spiritual ones. Deploying historical and conceptual analyses, the paper contends that, essentially, the deficiency of Wiredu’s argument lies in his declining to (...)

Taboos and clinical research in West Africa.O. O. Ajayi - 1980 - Journal of Medical Ethics 6 (2):61-63.
Moral principles or the rules of conduct are based in the society. If the purpose of ethics in research is to take into consideration the needs and the rights of the experimental subject, his social milieu must then largely determine the ethical considerations of a projected study. The inability to comprehend such rights may often be due to ignorance, disease and his societal values. Blood letting, biopsy and post-mortem examinations may so conflict with local beliefs that so called 'consent' to (...)

Discursive-manipulative strategies in scam emails and SMS: The Nigerian perspective.Temitope Michael Ajayi - 2022 - Lodz Papers in Pragmatics 18 (1):175-195.
Cyber scam, a subculture in Nigeria, especially among youths, has been under-investigated from the linguistic perspective. This study thus explores discursive-manipulative strategies in scam emails and SMS/messages in Nigeria, drawing samples from a corpus of over 200 emails and 50 SMS documented between 2018 and 2022. With insights from Brown and Levinson’s face, Mey’s pragmatic act and McCronack’s information manipulation theories, it is observed that discursive manipulative strategies such as positive and negative false alarm, self-denigration, formulaic, and evocation of theistic (...)

Christian missions and evolution of the culture of mass education in western Nigeria.S. A. Ajayi - 2006 - Journal of Philosophy and Culture 3 (2):33-54.
The culture of mass education has become an enduring tradition in Western Nigeria. The root of this culture is traceable to the mid-nineteenth century when the Christian missionary bodies began a process of systematic evangelization, using Western education as a medium and an indispensable tool. Early converts were taught how to read the Bible in vernacular – a measure that helped produce the first widespread literate class in Western Nigeria. Thereafter, mass education was promoted through the opening of primary and (...)

Globalization and the Question of African Cultural Identity.Ọmọ́táyọ̀ Ayọ̀dèjì Ọládèbóa - 2019 - Dialogue and Universalism 29 (3):125-140.
This paper engages in the debate between cultural modernists and cultural traditionalists concerning the importance of cultural fidelity as faced by African people via globalization and its alleged homogenizing tendency. Central to this debate is the issue of cultural truths and its use, that is, development. The paper therefore argues that African peoples do not need to “essentialize” their cultures. This is because the “truths about reality” with which they intend to employ in this quest for development are not exclusive (...)

‘Fanm Se Poto Mitan: Haitian Woman, the Pillar of Society.Marie-José N'Zengou-Tayo - 1998 - Feminist Review 59 (1):118-142.
In this paper Marie-Jose N'zengou-Tayo draws on a variety of sources, both historical and contemporary, to describe the journey of Haitian women from nineteenth-century post-War of Independence, to present-day Haitian society. The paper is divided in two sections. In the first, the author traces a brief social history of women, quoting anthropological and sociological studies from the 1930s to the 1970s. She begins with rural peasant women noting their significant involvement in farming, marketing and in the internal food trade (...)

Evaluating Coaching Intervention for Financial Risk Perception and Credit Risk Management in a Nigerian Sample.Robinson Onuora Ugwoke, Edith Ogomegbunam Onyeanu, Obioma Vivian Ugwoke & Tijani Ahmed Ajayi - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
There is no doubt that a negative perception of financial risk and a lack of credit risk management adversely impact business growth and business owners’ wellbeing. Past studies suggest that most Nigerian traders have poor risk perceptions and manage risk poorly. A business coaching program within rational-emotive behavior therapy framework was evaluated in order to determine its effects on financial risk perception and credit risk management among Nigerian traders. This study used an open-label parallel randomized control design. This 8-weeks coaching (...)

A Philosophical Comparison of the Educational Thoughts of Obafemi Awolowo and Tai Solarin.Oladele Abiodun Balogun - 2009 - Thought and Practice: A Journal of the Philosophical Association of Kenya 1 (2):61-72.
This paper compares the educational thoughts of Obafemi Awolowo and Tai Solarin. Its methodology is critical and comparative. The paper argues that the variations of the political philosophies of the two thinkers account for the differences in their views on education. It further contends that the educational ideas of both thinkers reflect African cultural experiences. The paper also explores the possibility of integrating the insights of the two thinkers into the educational policies and practices of contemporary African societies.

The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful Discourse about Values in Yoruba Culture Barry Hallen Reveals everyday language as the key to understanding morals and ethics in Yoruba culture. "This contrasts with any suggestion that in Yoruba or, more generally, African society, moral thinking manifests nothing much more than a supine acquiescence in long established communal values.... Hallen renders a great service to African philosophy." —Kwasi Wiredu In Yoruba culture, morality and moral values are intimately linked to aesthetics. The purest (...)
