    Capote’s frozen cats: Sexuality, hospitality, civil rights.Michael P. Bibler - 2018 - Angelaki 23 (1):116-130.
In this late story, Truman Capote celebrates a peculiar form of object relations to expand definitions of sexuality beyond conventional identity categories and thus suggest a more expansive model of social inclusion and civil rights. Building on work in animal studies, queer theory, and the new materialities, I argue that the literalism of these object relations decenters the human and reimagines a wider ethics of belonging. The story describes an elderly widow who keeps all of her deceased cats (...)

Representations of Law and the Nonfiction Novel: Capote’s In Cold Blood Revisited. [REVIEW]Shulamit Almog - 2012 - International Journal for the Semiotics of Law - Revue Internationale de Sémiotique Juridique 25 (3):355-368.
The article describes the way in which law-related events are represented in Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Based on a narrative analysis, the paper will posit that In Cold Blood played a particular role in originating and shaping an innovative mode of representing law-related events, a mode that was widely employed since, in various artistic mediums and in popular culture. As the paper further elaborates, Capote’s work paved new ways for challenging the conventional boundaries between “reality” and (...)

    Diane Arbus's 1960s: Auguries of Experience.Frederick Gross - 2012 - Univ of Minnesota Press.
Gross goes against the stereotype of New York photographer Diane Arbus as 'Sylvia Plath with a camera' in this examination of Arbus's work within the cultural, literary, and artistic milieu of the 1960s. The author discusses Arbus's portraits, street scenes, images of madness and disability, and her magazine work, including a spread of portraits of children in the magazine Harper's Bazaar, entitled "Auguries of Innocence." Other photographers, artists, and authors under discussion include Robert Frank, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, (...)

A Transmaterial Approach to Walking Methodologies: Embodiment, Affect, and a Sonic Art Performance.Sarah E. Truman & Stephanie Springgay - 2017 - Body and Society 23 (4):27-58.
Bodily methodologies that engage with the affective, rhythmic, and temporal dimensions of movement have altered the landscape of social science and humanities research. Walking is one such methodology by which scholars have examined vital, sensory, material, and ephemeral intensities beyond the logics of representation. Extending this rich field, this article invokes the concept trans to reconceptualize walking research through theories that attend to the vitality and agency of matter, the interconnectedness between humans and non-humans, the importance of mediation and bodily (...)

    Maine de Biran's philosophy of will..Nathan Elbert Truman - 1904 - [n.p.]: Forgotten Books.
Excerpt from Maine De Biran's Philosophy of Will No special account of Maine de Biran's philosophy has before appeared in English, and the sources are rendered somewhat difficult by the author's highly involved style. It has seemed, therefore, that a somewhat extended exposition of his work may prove useful. In the composition of this monograph my object has been two-fold: to give a statement of Biran's system, and to show his exact position in the history of speculative thought. As a (...)

Advances in Economic Theory: Fifth World Congress.Truman Fassett Bewley (ed.) - 1989 - Cambridge University Press.
The Econometric Society holds a World Congress every five years. The program of these congresses has traditionally included a series of invited symposia, where speakers survey important recent advances in economic theory and econometrics. This volume, with its focus on economic theory and its companion volumes on econometrics contain papers delivered at the Fifth World Congress held in 1985. Designed to make material accessible to a general audience of economists, these articles should be helpful to anyone with training in economics, (...)

  14. Flexible Conceptual Representations.Alyssa Truman & Marta Kutas - 2024 - Cognitive Science 48 (6).
A view that has been gaining prevalence over the past decade is that the human conceptual system is malleable, dynamic, context‐dependent, and task‐dependent, that is, flexible. Within the flexible conceptual representation framework, conceptual representations are constructed ad hoc, forming a different, idiosyncratic instantiation upon each occurrence. In this review, we scrutinize the neurocognitive literature to better understand the nature of this flexibility. First, we identify some key characteristics of these representations. Next, we consider how these flexible representations are constructed by (...)

This article draws on Donna Haraway’s call for feminist speculative fabulation as an approach to qualitative research methodologies and writing praxis in schools. The first section of the article outlines how I conceptualize speculative thought, through different philosophers and theorists, and provides a brief literature review of speculative fiction used in secondary English curricula. The article then focuses on an in school creative writing project with grade 9 English students. In the student examples that I attend to, speculative fabulations and (...)

    Cosmic Beavers: queer counter-mythologies through speculative songwriting.Kathryn Yusoff, David Ben Shannon & Sarah E. Truman - 2023 - Angelaki 28 (6):84-96.
In this article, the authors introduce the concept of a “queer counter-mythology.” They do so by discussing a speculative song they wrote as an enactment of research-creation. Research-creation names an interdisciplinary scholarly praxis where artist-scholars create the artefacts they want to think-with, rather than analysing existing cultural productions. The song discussed in this article, “Cosmic Beavers,” proposes a queer counter-mythology that reimagines the historical, colonial archive by foregrounding the stories of giant, trans-dimensional beavers who shred Lewis and Clark and use (...)

    Laozi and Truman: A Hyperrealist Perspective.Aleksandar Stamatov - 2019 - Open Journal of Philosophy 9 (2):193-203.
This paper will use the concept of hyperreality to compare the so-called ideal state described by ancient Chinese philosopher Laozi with the world of The Truman Show. The concept of hyperreality is defined by Jean Baudrillard as the generation by models of a real without origin or reality. A hyperreal world is a simulation, or kind of a copy without its original. It is generally accepted, and confirmed by Baudrillard himself, that the world of The Truman Show is (...)
