The program of cultural refinement in 19th century Hungary: The Example of Count Széchenyi and Baron Kemény.Ferenc Horkay Hörcher - 2021 - Espes. The Slovak Journal of Aesthetics 10 (1):42-50.
In an effort to give a historical depth to recent discussions on taste in Aesthetic theory, this paper recovers a 19th century Hungarian paradigm. While taste first came to the forefront of philosophical reflection with the Enlightenment and especially with Kant, by now there is a growing literature on the survival of that discourse in the first half of the 19th century. The present author contributed to the research, which tried to show that in Hungary Count István Széchenyi, an influential (...)

Anti-metaphysical reasoning and sociological approach: roads from nationalism to regionalism in the 19th–20th century Hungarian intellectual tradition. [REVIEW]Gábor Gángó - 2008 - Studies in East European Thought 60 (1-2):17 - 30.
Some central issues offin-de-siècle Hungarian philosophy and intellectual tradition can be retrieved from the writings of József Eötvös and his mid-nineteenth century contemporaries. An ambiguous attitude towards metaphysics, emphasis on sociological issues as well as a regional perspective are apparent in his texts prior to the emergence of the great fin-de-siècle generation of Hungarian intellectuals. They survived the Habsburg Empire thanks to the post-Monarchical literary tradition and Péter Esterházy's works; they provided an adequate vocabulary for the Central European experience following (...)

Princeton in the Nation's Service: Religious Ideals and Educational Practice, 1868-1928.P. C. Kemeny - 1998 - Oxford University Press USA.
This book argues against the conventional idea that Protestantism effectively ceased to play an important role in American higher education around the end of the 19th century. Employing Princeton as an example, the study shows that Protestantism was not abandoned but rather modified to conform to the educational values and intellectual standards of the modern university. Drawing upon a wealth of neglected primary sources, Kemeny sheds new light on the role of religion in higher education by examining what was happening (...)

    How to Teach Guessing:Mathematics and Plausible Reasoning.John G. Kemeny - 1956 - Review of Metaphysics 9 (4):638 - 642.
Although the work consists of sixteen connected chapters, there is a difference of motivation that led to the book being published in two volumes. The first eleven chapters, comprising Volume I, attempt to teach good guessing through examples. The remaining chapters, in Volume II, deal with general principles of plausible reasoning.

Reading of this complex subject-matter is considerably simplified by a variety of devices: Brief summaries at the beginning of chapters and sections; theorems, definitions, etc. are clearly marked for easy cross-reference, the most important ones being specially marked by "+" signs. For a brief survey, the reader can read the summaries and the marked theorems and definitions.

Development of Different Forms of Skill Learning Throughout the Lifespan.Ágnes Lukács & Ferenc Kemény - 2015 - Cognitive Science 39 (2):383-404.
The acquisition of complex motor, cognitive, and social skills, like playing a musical instrument or mastering sports or a language, is generally associated with implicit skill learning . Although it is a general view that SL is most effective in childhood, and such skills are best acquired if learning starts early, this idea has rarely been tested by systematic empirical studies on the developmental pathways of SL from childhood to old age. In this paper, we challenge the view that childhood (...)

Visualizing the emergent structure of children's mathematical argument.Dolores Strom, Vera Kemeny, Richard Lehrer & Ellice Forman - 2001 - Cognitive Science 25 (5):733-773.
Mathematics educators suggest that students of all ages need to participate in productive forms of mathematical argument (NCTM, 2000). Accordingly, we developed two complementary frameworks for analyzing the emergence of mathematical argumentation in one second‐grade classroom. Children attempted to resolve contesting claims about the “space covered” by three different‐looking rectangles of equal area measure. Our first analysis renders the topology of the semantic structure of the classroom conversation as a directed graph. The graph affords clear “at a glance” visualization of (...)
