Kant is widely acknowledged for his critique of theoretical reason, his universalistic ethics, and his aesthetics. Scholars, however, often ignore his achievements in the philosophy of law and government. At least four innovations that are still relevant today can be attributed to Kant. He is the first thinker, and to date the only great thinker, to have elevated the concept of peace to the status of a foundational concept of philosophy. Kant links this concept to the political innovation of his (...) time, a republic devoted to human rights. He extends the concept by adding to it the right of nations and cosmopolitan law. Finally, Kant democratizes Plato's notion of philosopher kings with a concept of 'kingly people'. This book examines all aspects of this important, but neglected, body of Kant's writings. (shrink)

Zu einer der vordringlichsten, von der Philosophie aber häufig vernachlässigten Aufgaben der Politik stellt sie bis heute den wichtigsten klassischen Text dar. Kant entfaltet in ihm die philosophischen Grundlagen für eine internationale Rechts- und Friedensgemeinschaft. Gleichzeitig stellt er sich aber auch die Frage nach einer Vermittlung von normativer Theorie und politischer Praxis. Otfried Höffe is one of the foremost political philosophers in Europe today. In this major work, already a classic in continental Europe, he re-examines philosophical discourse on justice - from Classical Greece to the present day. Höffe confronts what he sees as the two major challenges to any theory of justice: the legal, positivist claim that there are no standards of justice external to legal systems; and the anarchist claim that justice demands the rejection and abolition of all legal (...) and state systems. Höffe sets out to continue the 'philosophical project of modernity', the legitimation of human rights, and their guarantee by the state, while at the same time rehabilitating the classical theory of political justice represented by Plato and Aristotle. He questions the success of the positivists in avoiding extra-legal normative claims, and casts doubt on the plausibility of their criticism of the Natural Law tradition. Most anarchists, he argues, rely on an uncritical assumption that social institutions other than states and legal orders do not coerce. In Höffe's view, some coercion is unavoidable, and the grounds for its justification must be examined. Principles of justice will be those principles which define fundamental rights, and which must be enforced if rights are to be respected. (shrink)

Cet article est le premier d’une série de contributions dont l’objectif est de rendre compte des investigations menées à Délos sur les différents secteurs de la ville qui n’ont jusqu’à présent fait l’objet d’aucune fouille. Celui‑ci est consacré à la région située au nord et à l’est du stade, au contact de la presqu’île de Patinioti. Il ressort des observations réalisées en surface du terrain naturel qu’on a affaire à un quartier d’habitations organisé en îlots autour d’une voie principale nord-sud, (...) qui semble être la continuité du quartier du Stade fouillé par A. Plassart et pourrait dater de la seconde période de la domination athénienne après 167 av. J.‑C. Sur les franges littorales est et ouest, les maisons sont construites perpendiculairement à la ligne du rivage, obligeant les constructeurs à réaliser d’importants travaux de génie civil. Les différences structurelles observées entre ces deux systèmes conduisent à se poser la question de la chronologie relative qui a présidé au développement de ce secteur. (shrink)

Democracy depends on a vivid public sphere, where ideas disseminate into the public and can be discussed – and challenged - by everyone. Journalism has contributed significantly to this social mediation by reducing complexity, providing information on salient topics and (planned) political solutions. The digital transformation of the public sphere leads to new forms of media provision, distribution, and use. Journalism has struggled to adapt to the new conditions. Journalistic news values, relevant to democracy, are being replaced by ones relevant (...) to social media platforms’ attention seeking business model. We plead for a broad public debate about the ongoing platformization and about possible policies to ensure a media system that serves and strengthens democracy. (shrink)

Edmund Husserl, generally regarded as the founding figure of phenomenology, exerted an enormous influence on the course of twentieth and twenty-first century philosophy. This volume collects and translates essays written by important German-speaking commentators on Husserl, ranging from his contemporaries to scholars of today, to make available in English some of the best commentary on Husserl and the phenomenological project. The essays focus on three problematics within phenomenology: the nature and method of phenomenology; intentionality, with its attendant issues of temporality (...) and subjectivity; and intersubjectivity and culture. Several essays also deal with Martin Heidegger's phenomenology, although in a manner that reveals not only Heidegger's differences with Husserl but also his reliance on and indebtedness to Husserl's phenomenology. Taken together, the book shows the continuing influence of Husserl's thought, demonstrating how such subsequent developments as existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction were defined in part by how they assimilated and departed from Husserlian insights. The course of what has come to be called continental philosophy cannot be described without reference to this assimilation and departure, and among the many successor approaches phenomenology remains a viable avenue for contemporary thought. In addition, problems addressed by Husserl--most notably, intentionality, consciousness, the emotions, and ethics--are of central concern in contemporary non-phenomenological philosophy, and many contemporary thinkers have turned to Husserl for guidance. The essays demonstrate how significant Husserl remains to contemporary philosophy across several traditions and several generations. The use of the political and philosophical concept of public space to explain certain economic regulation phenomena questions the common representation of the economic and political as two separate social spheres. After presenting different kind of local public spheres, we study the question of whether going beyond the public legitimization of other economic (...) local initiatives than market-exchanged oriented they can act as a new form of economic regulation which can influence the model of development. Cet article est une introduction aux études de morphologie urbaine entreprises à Délos depuis quelques années. Les recherches nouvellement menées, qui, à Délos, sont justifiées par l’étendue des surfaces en jeu et par des conditions d’observation particulièrement favorables, ont pour objectif d’apporter un éclairage nouveau sur la ville et de pallier les manques concernant la connaissance et la compréhension de ses caractères morphologiques. La méthode mise en œuvre est présentée au travers des étapes qu’elle est appelée à suivre, chacune faisant (...) l’objet d’une description détaillée. Après avoir complété le plan de la ville par le relevé des secteurs urbanisés jusqu’ici non fouillés, mené une analyse de la forme urbaine à partir de la documentation produite sur chacun des quartiers, et confronté ces résultats à la réalité archéologique, cette recherche pourrait permettre d’éclairer les différents processus d’urbanisation, leurs modalités et leurs règles, en s’efforçant de les replacer dans une perspective chronologique du développement de la ville.
