Most discussions concerned with advancing the just and ethical treatment of research participants in developing countries have revolved around the moral principle of autonomy and the legal doctrine of informed consent. However, if emerging ethical concerns are to be addressed effectively, the discussion needs to expand into the domain of business ethics where arguments addressing issues such as fair/appropriate compensation, entitlement, and corporate obligations to stakeholders are commonplace. The argument I present in this paper will conclude that emerging ethical considerations (...) regarding the treatment of research participants in developing countries have evolved well beyond the scope of the principle of informed consent and that in order to resolve these concerns more appropriately and effectively, the new default or status quo should be to consider research participants as stakeholders of the sponsoring pharmaceutical company, even after the clinical trial is completed. This conclusion is significant because although it is fair to assume that, at some point in the timeline, most stakeholder theorists already do consider research participants stakeholders of the pharmaceutical company sponsoring the trial, the completion date of the clinical trial usually signifies and marks the termination of their stakeholder status and thus any consideration of what is owed further to the research participant. En las elecciones municipales de 2015, la activista social Ada Colau conseguía la alcaldía de Barcelona. En el presente artículo exponemos y analizamos los puntos nodales que vertebran su discurso político e ideológico y lo comparamos con su discurso previo como activista, bajo el enfoque de los estudios de filosofía política sobre el discurso. En las conclusiones que se derivan de la comparación, estableceremos la evolución de su discurso.

A lo largo de la historia, el devenir de los acontecimientos ha hecho que determinados autores, que quizá en su época gozaron de fama y popularidad, hayan caído en el olvido o hayan sido forzados al ostracismo. Un caso clásico sería el del poeta y narrador estadounidense William Gilmore Simms quien, antes de la Guerra de Secesión, disfrutó de los laureles de la fama y la admiración de sus contemporáneos. Sin embargo, su apoyo a la causa confederada ha hecho de (...) él un autor prácticamente olvidado hoy en día. El caso de Joseph de Maistre es similar, pues también se enmarca dentro del apoyo a las causas perdidas o, más concretamente, a las causas que, andando el tiempo, no han resultado las vencedoras. Su apoyo a la causa contrarevolucionaria en el momento en que Europa se abría a la contemporaneidad social y política lo ha convertido en una isla en el pensamiento moderno, a pesar de que en su momento fuera un intelectual conocido y un pensador político respetado en los círculos conservadores. Como bien pone de manifiesto la Dra. Guerrero en su introducción, habría que esperar hasta 2007, para que la figura del senador saboyano volviera a los círculos académicos franceses, cuando Philippe Sollers escribió su ya clásico “Elogio de un maldito”. There are individuals, including children, dying needlessly in poverty-stricken third world countries. Many of these deaths could be prevented if pharmaceutical companies provided the drugs needed to save their lives. Some believe that because pharmaceutical companies have the power to save lives, and because they can do so with little effort, they have a special obligation. I argue that there is no distinction, with respect to obligations and responsibilities, between pharmaceutical companies and other types of companies. The basic idea of the conceptual paper is to discuss the notion of value creation in the business and society field and to present the public value concept as a way of extending the understanding of business’s value creation for society. First, the paper draws on the value balance accountability model by Schwartz and Carroll, in which value creation is identified as a central element in the business and society field. Second, based on this, we critically evaluate the VBA model’s (...) value notion, which appears to be relatively vague and narrow. Third, in order to tackle these gaps, we present Meynhardt’s public value approach, which provides an extended notion of value creation. We further propose a combined public value-balance-accountability-framework. Public value fills the framework’s value dimension with actual content and provides a microfoundation. It helps to overcome the separation fallacy. The combined framework contributes to both theory and practice in the business and society field. (shrink)

Atrial fibrillation is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in clinical practice. It often starts with asymptomatic and short episodes, which are difficult to detect without the assistance of automatic monitoring tools. The vast majority of methods proposed for this purpose are based on quantifying the irregular ventricular response during the arrhythmia. However, although AF totally alters the atrial activity reflected on the electrocardiogram, replacing stable P-waves by chaotic and time-variant fibrillatory waves, this information has still not been explored for automated (...) screening of AF. Hence, a pioneering AF detector based on quantifying the variability over time of the AA morphological pattern is here proposed. Results from two public reference databases have proven that the proposed method outperforms current state-of-the-art algorithms, reporting accuracy higher than 90%. A less false positive rate in the presence of other arrhythmias different from AF was also noticed. Finally, the combination of this algorithm with the classical analysis of RR series variability also yielded a promising trade-off between AF accuracy and detection delay. Indeed, this combination provided similar accuracy than RR-based methods, but with a significantly shorter delay of 10 beats. (shrink)

Neste artigo são examinados os aspectos do Assédio Moral que foram fundamentais para a emergência da Psicologia Organizacional, destacando os Movimentos Sociais e a Construção de Novas Concepções em Psicologia.

Buscando identificar os aspectos informativas de prontuários de pacientes internados por motivações sociais no Hospital Psiquiátrico de Jurujuba em 1953 e de concepções foucaultianas sobre a construção da ‘loucura’ e do ‘louco’ na sua forte relação com modelo de sociedade, esta pesquisa indagou: se a loucura é uma construção social, que na modernidade implicou em segregação, qual a função do documento médico nesse processo? Espera-se que apresentem um conteúdo informativo sobre as doenças (viés informativo). Mas os prontuários daquela instituição não (...) apresentaram-se informativos sobre a loucura. O conflito entre um esperado viés informativo do documento e os nossos resultados levou a proposta de que faz-se necessário um exame mais holístico do valor político e social do documento médico. Propõe-se um exame mais ampliado do documento, enquanto materialidade recortada de determinado acontecimento, com função de modelação e controle, dentro de um dispositivo maior de verdade: o conhecimento e as instituições médico-científicas. O acesso à informação sobre os pacientes, se consequência de um processo de organização eficaz de conjuntos documentais em arquivos médicos, inicia-se pela escrita sobre o paciente que age como sentença (interne-se ou dê-se alta), mas há um silêncio sobre as práticas médicas de tratamento, pelo menos no período e na instituição investigada, que torna o sujeito internado objeto de práticas indescritíveis. Ao final da pesquisa conclui-se que aqueles documentos sobre o louco têm, pelo menos, três vieses passíveis de análise: o da autoria da escrita; o do objeto da escrita, e o viés institucional, ou sobre como o documento institui em alguns casos, na nossa sociedade, relações de poder. Um quarto viés que atravessa todos os outros, o do regime burocrático no qual estamos inseridos e que, por algum motivo, precisa passar pelo caminho do documento para cristalizar o seu poder. Adopting an ecological perspective on children’s functioning and psychological well-being, we investigated the association between agency and life satisfaction, and its bearing on trauma symptoms and negative emotions in a group of Bedouin children living in the occupied Palestinian territories. Specifically, we hypothesized that the more children were agentic, the more they would be satisfied with their lives; and that greater life satisfaction would be associated with reduced trauma symptoms. A sample of 286 Bedouin children attending primary schools in four (...) different villages in the Jordan Valley completed the Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale (MSLSS), Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale for Children (PANAS-C), Children’s Impact of Event Scale (CRIES-13), and the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS). Structural equation modelling was performed to evaluate the cumulative network of direct and indirect effects between children’s agency, life satisfaction, and trauma symptoms. The findings confirmed the key role of life satisfaction in mitigating traumatic reactions. Higher levels of life satisfaction were associated with reduced negative emotions and trauma symptoms, suggesting that agency may be viewed as a pre-determining factor with the potential to protect children from trauma symptoms. This paper explores the philosophical debate between Muguerza and Habermas, starting with the meeting of the two in the summer of 1994 in Madrid. To this end, some of the core aspects of their respective ethical and legal thoughts are interpreted and apostilled, both in their agreements and in their disagreements. The text focuses on the controversy between two of their apparently irreducible positions. Namely, the “primacy of the moral conscience of the individual”, defended by Muguerza, and the “primacy of (...) the legal law of society”, advocated by Habermas. The paper concludes by suggesting a third approach, which methodically tempers the controversy, in reference to the duality of the “individual” constituted in-intra-societal relationship, and the “society” instituted by individuals-in-inter-relationship. La afirmación de que las reglas jurídicas son derrotables significa que, de acuerdo con nuestras prácticas jurídicas, puede estar justificado que los jueces dejen de lado las normas aplicables en la resolución de disputas y tengan en cuenta en su lugar otras consideraciones. En línea con este enfoque, este trabajo busca esclarecer los tipos de casos y las condiciones en las que, de acuerdo con nuestras convenciones asentadas, es aceptable que los jueces se desvíen de lo establecido en las reglas (...) jurídicas. En concreto, en el artículo se diferencian tres tipos distintos de derrotabilidad: D1 ; D2, y D3. Finalmente el artículo aborda la cuestión de si podemos considerar como jurídicas las consideraciones alternativas a las que los jueces deben apelar cuando estiman que deben dejar de lado las reglas prima facie aplicables. El trabajo concluye apuntando que la clave para trazar los límites entre el Derecho dúctil y el Derecho arbitrario descansa en una respuesta afirmativa a esta última pregunta. (shrink)

Alexithymic traits, which entail finding it difficult to recognize and describe one’s own emotions, are linked with poor trait emotional intelligence and difficulties in identifying and managing stressors. There is evidence that alexithymia may have detrimental consequences for wellbeing and health, beginning in adolescence. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the prevalence and incidence of alexithymia in teenage girls, testing the statistical power of TEI and student burnout to discriminate between high- and low-alexithymic subjects. A sample of 884 female high (...) school students attending three Italian academic-track high schools completed self-report measures of alexithymia, school burnout, and TEI. Main descriptive statistics and correlational analysis preceded the discriminant analysis. The mean alexithymia scores suggest a high prevalence of alexithymia in female adolescents; as expected, this trait was negatively correlated with TEI and positively associated with school burnout. Participants with high vs. low alexithymia profiles were discriminated by a combination of TEI and burnout scores. High scores for the emotionality and self-control dimensions of TEI were strongly associated with membership of the low alexithymia group; high scores for the emotional exhaustion dimension of school burnout were indicative of membership of the high alexithymia group. These findings suggest crucial focuses for educational intervention: efforts to reduce the risk of emotional exhaustion and school burnout should especially concentrate on enhancing emotional awareness and self-control skills, both strongly associated with low levels of alexithymia.
