Posteriormente, acudiendo a algunas ideas de Jacques Ranciére, se propone una lectura ético-política del arte transgénico y se abre un camino de discusión para pensar el rol de la bioética en un mundo en el que la manipulación genética y el upgrade de los cuerpos es una realidad. This dialogue concerns the nature of ethical responsibility in contemporary art practice, and its relation to questions of creativity; the role of writing in shaping the perception of transgenic art and related practices; and the problems that may be associated with trusting artists to act with integrity in the unchartered waters of their enthusiastic engagement with genetic technologies.

In 1997, I introduced the concept and the phrase “bio art”, originally in relation to my artwork “Time Capsule”. This work approached the problem of wet interfaces and human hosting of digital memory through the implantation of a microchip. The work consisted of a microchip implant, seven sepia-toned photographs, a live television broadcast, a webcast, interactive telerobotic webscanning of the implant, a remote database intervention, and additional display elements, including an X-ray of the implant. While “bio art” is applicable to (...) a large gamut of in vivo works that employ biological media, made by myself and others, in 1998, I started to employ the more focused term “transgenic art”. Republished in Ars Electronica ‘99—Life Science, ed. Gerfried Stocker and Christine Schopf, 289–296.) to describe a new art form based on the use of genetic engineering to create unique living beings. Art that manipulates or creates life must be pursued with great care, with acknowledgment of the complex issues it raises and, above all, with a commitment to respect, nurture, and love the life created. I have been creating and exhibiting a series of transgenic artworks since 1999. I have also been creating bio art that is not transgenic. The implications of this ongoing body of work have particular esthetic and social ramifications, crossing several disciplines and providing material for further reflection and dialog. What follows is an overview of theses works, the issues they evoke, and the debates they have elicited. (shrink)

This book offers an original approach to avant-garde art and its transformative force. Presenting an alternative to the approaches to art developed in postmodern theory or cultural studies, Ziarek sees art's significance in its critique of power and the increasing technologization of social relations. Re-examining avant-garde art and literature, from Italian and Russian Futurism and Dadaism, to Language poetry, video and projection art, as well as transgenic and Internet art, this book argues that art's importance today cannot be explained (...) simply in aesthetic or cultural terms but has to take into consideration how artworks question the technological character of modern power. To emphasize the transformative character of art, the book redefines art as a force field, in which forces drawn from historical and social reality come be to formed into an alternative relationality. Through discussions of such key avant-garde figures as Marinetti, Duchamp, Khlebnikov, and Vertov, and innovative contemporary artists like Viola, Wodiczko and Kac, The Force of Art counters the pessimism about art's social function by recovering and redefining art's transformative role in modernity. Humans in the biotech era foster biotechnological research and engineering with ambitions to gain control over bodies and enhance them, to gain control over the rest of the living world and enhance the attributes of organisms in order to serve utilitarian objectives. Biotechnology is a political strategy to gain power over the living world and to make use of this conquest. Science is located in power relations and is therefore produced in the direction of economic and political power to the (...) practical grounds of scientific research. Recognition of this point is extremely relevant for the comprehension of the work of Adam Zaretsky. Tratnik examines performative art of Adam Zaretsky, who stages provocative hands-on workshops in the public space and shares lab skills with the untrained. With doing that he succeeds to demystify the biotechnological procedures dealing with genetics, that usually take place in scientific laboratories. The products used in the laboratory milieu are in this case replaced with kitchen and household products, blood, excrement, executed animals. This way Zaretsky viscerally confronts participants with the actual questions arising from experiencing transgenic technology in a non-utilitarian manner. (shrink)

Turning animals into art through genetic manipulation poses many questions for how we think about our relationship with other species. Here, I explore three rather disparate sets of issues. First, I ask to what extent the production of such living “artforms” really is as transgressive as advocates claim. Whether or not it counts as radical in terms of art I cannot say: but it is not at all radical, I argue, in terms of how we think about our human place (...) in the world. On the contrary, producing these animals only reinforces our own sense of our importance. The second theme I explore is the extent to which making transgenic organisms for any purposes is radical in terms of complexity. Here, I focus on the idea of complexity as a concept in developmental biology; genetic manipulation may be successful to commercial companies, but it is deeply troubling to many biologists who consider that its deeply entrenched reductionism is enormously problematic. What risks do we run by ignoring nature’s own complexity—and creativity? And—in particular—what risks do we run of damaging or compromising animal welfare? The third theme turns to public perceptions of these new technologies (whether in science or art), and notes the extent of public unease. This unease is not simply a question of public ignorance about the technology, but reflects the enormously rich ways in which we make meanings about animals, and relate to them. These are, I suggest, a far more potent source of creativity than simply moving genes around to make photogenic animals. (shrink)

We explore themes in Nobel Prize–winning economist James M. Buchanan’s work and apply his Ethics and Economic Progress to problems facing individuals and firms. We focus on Buchanan’s analysis of the individual work ethic, his exhortations to “pay the preacher” of the “institutions of moral-ethical communication,” and his notion of law as “public capital.” We highlight several ways people with other-regarding preferences can contribute to social flourishing and some of the ways those who have “affected to trade for the public (...) good” might want to redirect their efforts. We show how Buchanan’s work has considerable implications for business ethics. Just as his economic analysis of politics changed how we understand government, we think his economic analysis of ethics can (and should) change how we understand business. (shrink)

Quando assisti pela primeira vez a “Sociedade dos Poetas Mortos”, em 1989 (ano de lançamento no cinema), a história protagonizada pelo saudoso Robin Williams me comoveu profundamente. Naquela época eu caminhava rumo aos meus 20 anos, quando a vida ainda parece uma areia movediça e o futuro, uma eternidade. Eu ainda estava na Faculdade de Filosofia da UFBA, em Salvador, preparando-me para ser professor.

Em 2022 teremos uma celebração muito especial para a Música Popular Brasileira. O icônico disco “Clube da Esquina”, de Milton Nascimento e Lô Borges, completará 50 anos de lançado. O álbum apresentou ao mundo mais do que o resultado de uma parceria musical de rara beleza; ele foi uma espécie de marco zero de um movimento artístico e existencial nascido na bucólica Belo Horizonte da segunda metade da década de 1960, envolvendo amigos, música, cinema e literatura.

Revendo recentemente o ótimo filme “A Vila”, do diretor indiano M. Night Shyamalan (o mesmo diretor de “O Sexto Sentido”, “Corpo Fechado” e “Sinais”), é possível entender os motivos que levaram os fundadores do vilarejo fictício a criar um mundo à parte para as futuras gerações. O filme, de 2004, é inserido no gênero “suspense” por conta de sua história central em torno de uma lenda sobre criaturas aterradoras que vivem na floresta. Estas são o empecilho para que os moradores (...) cultivem o desejo de deixar o único lugar que conhecem. (shrink)

Ainda que possa ser visto como clichê sob diversos aspectos, o filme “O Céu da Meia-Noite” (dirigido e protagonizado por George Clooney para a Netflix) traz temas reflexivos na perspectiva existencial. Lançado em dezembro de um ano doloroso para a humanidade, ele teve as suas gravações encerradas pouco antes do início da pandemia, ainda que traga uma atmosfera tão soturna quanto a deste momento histórico.

O início da terceira década do século 21, tão marcado pela globalização tecnológica e virtualização das relações humanas, ainda mantém fortes laços com o obscurantismo religioso da Idade Média. Com outra roupagem, o fanatismo de muitos cristãos das mais variadas igrejas eterniza sentimentos e ações que acreditávamos superados há séculos. A intolerância religiosa, normalmente carregada de outras tantas intolerâncias na pauta moral, revela com clareza que a caça às bruxas nos tempos da chamada Santa Inquisição foi atualizada com sucesso. O (...) Brasil, por exemplo, vive um de seus piores momentos históricos neste sentido, principalmente pelos recorrentes ataques furiosos às religiões de matriz africana e crimes de agressão e morte contra as chamadas minorias sociais. Mais de duas décadas após o seu lançamento, em 1999, o primeiro filme da trilogia Matrix tem neste segundo ano da pandemia do coronavírus uma atualidade atordoante. Em muitos aspectos, a humanidade vive dias muito próximos do enredo surreal descrito nos três filmes, que revi recentemente provavelmente pela décima vez. A diferença é que a realidade sombria vivida por bilhões de pessoas nos quatro cantos da Terra desde março de 2020 não tem uma versão amena como a existente dentro da (...) Matrix. (shrink)

“Não existe ninguém que não esteja mais próximo da morte depois de um ano que antes dele, amanhã mais do que hoje, hoje mais do que ontem, pouco depois mais do que agora e agora pouco mais do que antes”. Neste trecho do livro “Cidade de Deus”, um dos mais importantes filósofos da Idade Média – Santo Agostinho (354-430) – enfatiza uma velha constatação da humanidade, mas que a angustia em qualquer época.

Os sentidos da paixão foram originalmente um curso livre que o Núcleo de Estudos e Pesquisas da Fundação Nacional de Arte (Funarte) promoveu no Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília e Curitiba e que atraiu cerca de setecentas a mil pessoas em cada cidade. Prova da fertilidade do curso é este livro apaixonado.
