Des magasins Disney aux boutiques de musées, les produits dérivés sont désormais incontournables. En réutilisant une grande variété de formes et de volumes, ces phénomènes marketing semblent se faire l’écho d’une situation culturelle particulière pour laquelle un personnage de bande dessinée et un tableau de maître peuvent être imprimés sur un mug ou un carnet sans aucune distinction. Malgré ces goûts éclectiques, les produits dérivés semblent dessiner un savoir-faire spécifique, motivé à première vue par des raisons (...) commerciales. Quelle est l’histoire des produits dérivés et comment pouvons-nous les définir? En regardant les pratiques des concepteurs de produits dérivés et en les replaçant dans leurs contextes de vente, nous comprenons que la reproduction n’est pas la seule raison de leur succès. Une motivation décorative fait également partie intégrante de leur nature. Cet aspect des produits dérivés, qui appartient plus au champ esthétique qu’économique, nous offre des informations sur la place des arts appliqués dans notre société et sur leur traduction par le capitalisme contemporain. The terracotta, Volos Museum inv. M 2004, found at the beginning of the century in the excavations of A. S. Arvanitopoulos on the edge of the ramparts at Demetrias, is a Hellenistic Tanagra figurine and is quite commonplace from an iconographie point of view. It does, however, have a special interest because of its technical characteristics, which identify it as a figurine patrix, in other words a moulded object especially fabricated to serve in the making of new moulds. The peripheral (...) band around it would have facilitated the demarcation between the front and rear sections of the derivative moulds which were to be fabricated. The figurine, destined for a workshop that was no longer producing this type, illustrates a particular form of diffusion encountered in the field of coro- plasty: alongside the commercialisation of the products themselves (the figurines, which any ceramic craftsman could subsequently reproduce by the use of derivative moulds) and the tools for producing them (the bivalve moulds), there was a parallel diffusion of objects of ambiguous status, being themselves neither an end product nor a tool of production, but a product designed to fabricate new tools of production. Derivative moulding is thus established as belonging to actual commercial practice. Moreover, the Volos figurine and the rare comparable examples that it has been possible to discover enable a better understanding of the technical aspects of taking a two-part mould impression from a positive or patrix mould. Le premier chapitre traite des théories de l’auto-organisation de Varela et d’Atlan. Pour Varela, les êtres vivants sont des machines autopoiétiques. Ils régénèrent constamment le réseau d’activités et d’organes qui les a produits, ont chacun une organisation, une structure et une individualité, et sont opérationnellement clos; ce sont des unités concrètes sans input ni output, spatio-temporellement reconnaissables dans un milieu donné, et saisies comme telles par l’analyse de leurs composants. Varela généralise ce modèle au système nerveux, donc en fait (...) à l’activité cognitive, et aussi au système immunitaire, de même qu’à l’ontogenèse de la cellule et à l’évolution des espèces, qui seraient selon lui parallèles. Dans Risking together, Bryan et Rafferty pensent à la manière de la finance comportementale, mais ils pensent contre elle et inventent la Marxian behavioural finance. Ils montrent en quoi les ménages, amenés à penser à la manière de la finance dans leur vie quotidienne, sont devenus malgré eux un acteur clé du processus de production des produits dérivés. Les ménages sont désormais intégrés à la finance du côté offre, par la titrisation de leur dette mais aussi de leurs (...) paiements, et du côté demande par leur épargne. Il convient alors de préciser les enjeux systémiques de la boucle financière dans laquelle s’insèrent désormais les ménages, devenus collectivement absorbeurs nets de risque. Face à la toute-puissance d’une finance qui transfère les risques aux ménages, s’impose désormais l’institutionnalisation sociale du risque de défaut. (shrink)

Mental disorders in university students are very frequent, therefore higher education institutions have established in-campus mental healthcare centres. These clinics have particular characteristics that differ from other mental health centres, as they report to and represent an educational institution, while at the same time looking after the interests and well-being of patients requesting assistance, thus generating unique bioethical conflicts. Ethics Committees are useful tools to offer support to mental health professionals in making ethical decisions. In order to respond to these (...) issues, it was decided that an Ethics Committee would be created in the mental health clinic of a private university in Mexico City. This article describes the implementation process for this Committee, its duties and scope, as well as the case work and review methodology. A list of the most frequent ethical conflicts is attached, jointly with the ethical analysis of the cases treated throughout the year and a half or work by the Committee. (shrink)

Le blockbuster, c'est de l'explosif. A l'origine du mot, une bombe utilisée pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, capable de détruire tout un pâté de maisons. Et il n'y a sans doute pas d'image plus typique du blockbuster que celle d'une gigantesque explosion. Les déflagrations dont il s'agit dans ce livre ne sont pas uniquement celles que racontent les films. Produit grand public, confectionné grâce à d'immenses investissements financiers, le blockbuster s'apparente à une bombe à fragmentation, pulvérisant l'objet filmique dans des (...) contextes de consommation qui n'ont plus rien à voir avec le cinéma, se diffractant sur le marché mondial sous forme de produits dérivés, T-shirts, figurines et autres gadgets. Sept auteurs, philosophes et critiques, se sont penchés sur quelques blockbusters de leur choix. A chaque fois, les films dynamitent la pensée et l'entraînent dans des directions inattendues : les gremlins sabotent les écrans et contaminent les images, Godzilla et King Kong se font machines à échanger les regards, Batman devient le théâtre d'une déconstruction du politique, Alien met en scène les métamorphoses d'un récit qui ne change jamais, et Titanic coule comme cette industrie lourde qu'est le cinéma lui-même... Le livre de Borkenau, „Der Übergang vom feudalen zum bürgerlichen Weltbild“ développe une nouvelle théorie de la naissance de la pensée moderne. Il s’attache à rechercher l’origine, moins de telles ou telles idées particulières que des concepts fondamentaux et des méthodes de penser de l'époque moderne. Borkenau considère avant tout la représentation mécaniste du monde telle qu'elle a été fondée dans la philosophie de Descartes et de ses successeurs comme décisive pour la pensée moderne et il élucide ses conditions sociologiques.L'étude (...) de Grossmann part du livre de Borkenau qu'il soumet à la critique et il essaye d'indiquer de manière indépendante une meilleure voie qui mène à la compréhension de la formation de la pensée bourgeoise. Ses arguments se rapportent avant tout à deux groupes de problèmes. D'après Borkenau, c'est au début du xvne siècle que la conception mécaniste du monde l'a emporté sur la philosophie qualitative qui régnait auparavant. Cette interprétation est jugée par Grossmann comme une méconnaissance de l'histoire réelle des idées et des faits. L'origine des questions fondamentales de la mécanique doit être cherchée à la Renaissance et Léonard de Vinci est un de ses créateurs. Ces théories nouvelles, dégagées en grande partie de l'étude des machines de son temps, se sont développées par différentes voies jusqu'à Galilée et Descartes, dont les doctrines ne marquent donc pas le début de la pensée mécaniste.L'autre critique fondamentale est étroitement liée à celle-ci. Elle concerne l'explication que donne Borkenau de la représentation mécaniste. Si celle- ci a pris naissance au xvne siècle, la condition essentielle de cette réalisation doit donc s’être produite à peu près à cette époque. D'après Borkenau cette condition serait la diffusion des manufactures. Avec la division de l'activité artisane en activités uniformes non qualifiées à l'intérieur de la manufacture, serait né le concept d'un travail social abstrait. La décomposition du processus de travail en mouvements simples dans la manufacture aurait rendu comparables les heures de travail. Le calcul avec du travail abstrait constituerait la base de la représentation mécaniste du monde. Grossmann montre en s'appuyant sur Marx que le plus souvent il ne saurait être question de division de travail dans les manufactures, mais que, en règle générale, des artisans qualifiés travaillaient réunis dans un même local. Ce n’est pas le calcul avec les heures de travail, mais l'évolution du machinisme qui aurait été la cause immédiate de la mécanique scientifique. Cette genèse remonte sans doute à la Renaissance et a très peu à faire avec les manufactures qui ont été finalement refoulées par l'industrie des machines.Alors que Borkenau, lorsqu'il vient à parler du conditionnement social des philosophes et des savants, remonte surtout aux batailles des partis politiques, Grossmann ne voit dans les partis qu’un facteur de l'ensemble de la situation complexe, à partir de laquelle s'explique le mouvement des idées modernes. Une théorie suffisante de l'évolution de la pensée moderne implique qu'on tienne compte de la totalité des forces sociales.Franz Borkenau's book „The Transition from Feudal to Modern Thought“ („Der Übergang vom feudalen zum bürgerlichen Weltbild“), serves as background for Grossmann's study. The objective of this book was to trace the sociological origins of the mechanistic categories of modern thought as developed in the philosophy of Descartes and his successors. In the beginning of the 17th century, according to Borkenau, mechanistic thinking triumphed over mediaeval philosophy which emphasized qualitative, not quantitative considerations. This transition from mediaeval and feudal methods of thought to modern principles is the general theme of Borkenau's book, and is traced to the social changes of this time. According to this work, the essential economic change that marked the transition from mediaeval to modern times was the destruction of the handicraft system and the organization of labor under one roof and under one management. The roots of the change in thought are to be sought here. With the dismemberment of the handicraft system and the division of labor into relatively unskilled, uniform, and therefore comparable activities, the conception of abstract homogeneous social labor arises. The division of the labor process into simple, repeated movements permits a comparison of hours of labor. Calculation with such abstract social unities, according to Borkenau, was the source from which modern mechanistic thinking in general derived its origin.Grossmann, although he considers Borkenau’s work a valuable and important contribution, does not believe that the author has achieved his purpose. First of all, he contends that the period that Borkenau describes as the period of the triumph of modern thought over mediaeval should not be placed at the beginning of the 17th century, but in the Renaissance, and that not Descartes and Hobbes but Leonardo da Vinci was the initiator of modern thought. Leonardo's theories, evolved from a study of machines, were the source of the mechanistic categories that culminated in modern thought.If Borkenau’s conception as to the historical origin of these categories is incorrect in regard to time, Grossman claims it follows that it is incorrect also in regard to the social sources to which it is ascribed. In the beginning, the factory system did not involve a division of labor into comparable homogeneous processes, but in general only united skilled handicraftsmen under one roof. The development of machinery, not the calculation with abstract hours of labor, is the immediate source of modern scientific mechanics. This goes back to the Renaissance and has relatively little to do with the original factory system that was finally superseded by the Industrial Revolution.While Borkenau, in tracing the social background of the thought of the period, relies chiefly on the conflicts and strife of political parties, Grossmann regards this as one element only in the formation of the general social situation, which in its entirety and in the interaction of its elements explains the development of modern thought. Alerte! La malscience se répand aussi vite que la malbouffe! D'apparence de plus en plus sophistiquée mais produite en masse, de plus en plus vite et de moins en moins fiable. Interrogés de manière anonyme, 2 % des scientifiques reconnaissent avoir inventé ou falsifié des données. Soit pas moins de 140 000 chercheurs fraudeurs de par le monde. Biologie et médecine sont, de loin, les plus touchées. Et ces fraudes manifestes ne sont rien à côté des petits arrangements avec la (...) rigueur qui sont devenus fréquents dans les laboratoires. Est-ce grave? Très grave. Car la biologie et la médecine traitent de la santé, de la vie, de la mort. Est-il acceptable que de nouveaux médicaments soient testés, et peut-être autorisés, sur la base d'expériences plus ou moins truquées? Comme le secteur financier miné par ses créances irrécupérables, la littérature scientifique en biologie et en médecine s'avère de plus en plus gangrenée par des articles toxiques. Ce livre revient sur une série de scandales internationaux - des frères Bogdanoff à des cas moins médiatiques mais non moins dangereux - et se propose de réfléchir aux causes d'une telle dérive et aux moyens d'y remédier. A la fois enquête de terrain et essai critique, il met en lumière un aspect fondamental et trop ignoré de l'évolution actuelle des pratiques scientifiques. (shrink)

Tout savoir est une forme de croyance, qui, d’une discipline à l’autre, assume, nie ou interprète cette archéologie. La science économique s’est construite en gommant les croyances qui la justifient comme discipline scientifique, mais aussi les croyances qui structurent les comportements économiques et les pratiques sociales. Longtemps les racines « religieuses » de ce savoir socialement élaboré autour du paradigme de l’homo oeconomicus ont été niées, ideal-type dominant de cette science sociale « centrale », où les croyances existent au mieux (...) comme résidu, construisant, par là même, la naturalité de l’économie de marché. Pourtant au moment même où l’économie de marché s’impose comme une croyance dominante des sociétés de la seconde modernité, et où les dérives scientistes des sciences sociales utilitaristes sont identifiables, sinon toujours identifiées, la science économique contemporaine réévalue la subjectivité des comportements humains et accorde aux représentations sociales un rôle moteur dans les choix, les anticipations et les comportements économiques. Les croyances économiques sont même au fondement des politiques économiques contemporaines. En même temps, la science économique par sa vulgarisation construit des comportements, infléchit le sens commun, produit – pour une part – les croyances qu’elle analyse : dans nos sociétés de la communication, tout citoyen « sait » ce qu’est un taux d’inflation, un taux de chômage… interprétant comme réalités économiques ce qui n’est que constructions sociales et scientifiques. Et ces savoirs pratiques ont des effets sur la réalité économique elle-même. Au point que l’enseignement scolaire de l’économie est contesté de manière récurrente au nom du pragmatisme, du concret et de l’efficacité par des groupes de pression liés au monde de l’entreprise. Nos sociétés sécularisées construisent leurs propres formes de croyances qui prennent parfois des formes inattendues : au fond, nos croyances nous apprennent d’abord ce que nous sommes…. (shrink)

Le « lieu théologique » qu'est le magistère de l'Eglise s'impose de plus en plus à la réflexion du théologien, du canoniste et, plus largement, de tout catholique averti en raison de documents nombreux et divers émanant du pape et des instances romaines. Tirant ses origines du concept de tradition en référence directe à l'expérience de foi, le Magistère est aussi le produit d'une longue histoire. Dans cette histoire, l'organe transmetteur allait prendre le pas sur la tradition transmise, avec prise (...) en compte de la foi comme obéissance plutôt qu'adhésion et surgissement du concept de « foi ecclésiastique ». Au terme de cette histoire, une question se pose inévitablement : doit-on analyser ces évolutions en terme de dérives ? The « theological site » that is the Church's Magisterium is more and more a subject of reflection for the theologian, the canonist, and, more generally, fur every aware Catholic. This is especially due to the numerous and diverse documents coming from the Pope and other Roman sources. Deriving its origins from the concept of tradition in direct reference to the experience of faith, the Magisterium is also the Product of a long history. In this history the transmitting organ would take ascendancy over received tradition, with an account of the faith as obedience rather than adhesion, and the growth of the concept of « ecclesiastical faith. » At the term of this history a question is inevitably posed : should one analyze these evolutions in terms of going astray ? Machiavélique. Un frisson saisit l'assistance, qui espère quelque diablerie. Jamais épithète n'a été utilisée plus à contresens du nom dont elle dérive... "...Quand Christian Soleil m'a proposé de préfacer Sur les traces de Machiavel, j'ai accepté très volontiers, car le sujet, dans le monde tourneboulé d'aujourd'hui, est d'une actualité brûlante et l'écriture, comme toujours, jaillissante et dense. Me voilà donc en situation de commenter le bras de fer entre un personnage de légende, difficile à débusquer de son trou et plus (...) difficile encore à confesser, et son poursuivant, notre auteur, l'œil pétillant, la plume déliée......"De l'embarras de démêler le vrai de l'apparence et le bonheur des peuples de l'asservissement". Il ne s'agit pas d'un inédit soudain découvert de l'auteur des Discours, seulement des interrogations du lecteur au sortir d'un tête-à-tête avec Machiavel, dont Christian Soleil, avec une maîtrise éprouvée, a été l'animateur inspiré et diligent. La rencontre a-t-elle été fructueuse? Il me semble. Le compte-rendu de celle-ci, sous la forme d'une biographie commentée, répond à une curiosité conséquente à un long pèlerinage en milieu trouble, non en la satisfaisant, mais en l'excitant davantage. Car il est dans le rôle de l'écrivain de susciter des interrogations et des résistances plutôt que de livrer un produit à consommer en l'état. Naviguant sur un fleuve dont les eaux tumultueuses sont semées d'écueils, Christian Soleil a écrit un livre qui marquera à la fois par une recherche poussée et méthodique, une construction intellectuelle très élaborée, une langue familière et noble. Concernant la vraie nature de son héros, le doute subsiste. Et c'est bien ainsi... " Michel Durafour. (shrink)

La motivation de l’amalgamation de jeu de mots se circonscrit à la combinaison de lexèmes source cognitivement reconnus comme ayant une similitude linguistique, ou un effet d’oxymore. Il est possible que les interlocuteurs remotivent ensuite des groupes de consonnes de ces formes, s’ils leurs associent des traits sémantiques pour former d’autres amalgames.L’amalgamation de jeu de mots est destinée à renforcer la saillance cognitive. La forme produite se démarque alors de son cotexte essentiellement composé de lexèmes monomorphémiques, de dérivés et (...) de composés non-tronqués. Cela change la façon dont on se focalise sur un référent, que ce soit par la mise en relief d’une lexie sur laquelle on attire l’attention, ou par la réduction de son impact sur les interlocuteurs qui doivent reconstituer mentalement les éléments sources possiblement gênants. Cette approche principale dévoile une arborescence d’objectifs possibles, comprenant l’humour, l’attractivité commerciale, les mots d’esprits pour défendre ses idées, l’esthétisme littéraire, l’euphémisme, le dysphémisme, ou l’idiosyncrasie pour exprimer son individualité ou paraître original et créatif.L’examen de formes coréférentielles au sein ou en dehors de l’amalgamation de jeu de mots démontre que l’objectif repose sur l’occurrence. L’analyse, dans des situations variées, d’occurrences de mêmes formes amalgamées par jeu de mots prouve que la motivation repose sur l’usage et se trouve sur l’interface sémantique-pragmatique. Cependant, la pragmatique doit parfois prendre le relais des limites de la sémantique pour mettre en lumière la motivation d’une forme amalgamée, puisque la forme peut rester ambigüe. (shrink)

Résumé — En réaction contre la diversité frappante des interprétations du concept de volonté générale chez Rousseau, cet article – qui entend aussi contribuer à cette interprétation – défend une lecture procédurale de la volonté générale qui serait donc le produit d’un vote majoritaire de l’assemblée ; il montre comment certains des passages du livre IV du Contrat social qui semblent se prêter le moins à cette interprétation peuvent cependant y être entièrement intégrés ; contre l’idée que la volonté générale (...) pourrait d’une certaine manière se déduire d’une conception du « bien commun » des citoyens, l’article montre que Rousseau considère globalement que c’est le vote des citoyens qui donne son contenu à l’idée de bien commun. Une partie de la littérature récente consacrée à Rousseau attire l’attention sur les épisodes où les citoyens pourraient ne pas ressentir subjectivement la volonté générale comme l’expression de leur liberté. En réponse à cette difficulté, souvent présentée comme un problème de dissidence politique, l’article soutient qu’aucune solution à ce problème qui se situerait au niveau de la théorie abstraite n’est convaincante ; la pensée politique de Rousseau fournit cependant un certain nombre de ressources qui nous aident à comprendre les différentes options qui s’offrent au dissident dans une république bien ordonnée. La triade classique de Stephen Dedalus – « silence, exil et ruse » – est une manière de nommer trois de ces solutions. L’article se conclut par quelques brèves remarques consacrées aux perspectives que nous ouvre la pensée de Rousseau sur la question de la désobéissance civile.— In response to the striking multiplicity of interpretations of Rousseau’s general will , this paper defends a procedural reading of the general will as one that is constructed through majority voting in the assembly ; it shows how some of the least promising passages of Rousseau’s text in Book Four of The Social Contract are fully assimilable to this interpretation ; and in opposition to the view that the general will is somehow derivable from the citizens’ common good, it contends that Rousseau generally considers that voting is in fact what gives the idea of the common good its content. Some of the best recent critical literature on Rousseau has focused on the moment when citizens might not subjectively experience the general will as an expression of their freedom. In response to this, often framed as the problem of political dissent, the paper argues that there is no persuasive solution on the level of abstract theory ; nevertheless, that Rousseau’s political thought provides us with a number of resources that help us to think about the problems and possibilities of dissent in a well-ordered republic. Stephen Dedalus’ classic trio of « silence, exile, and cunning » helps to provide a label for three of these, and the paper concludes with some brief remarks on the prospects for Rousseauvian civil disobedience. Ce texte n’est qu’une tentative de description de la raison qui, d’un point de vue général, est responsable des jugements moraux. Cette tentative s’appuie sur les recherches des neuroscientifiques qui lancent un défi aux notions philosophiques en vigueur. La « mesure » neuroscientifique de la moralité révèle que les décisions morales se font à un niveau intuitif et qu’elles peuvent être plus ou moins motivées d’une manière émotionnelle. Ceci signifie qu’elles dépendent davantage du fait que l’attitude soit personnelle ou non (...) et moins des critères universels de rectitude ou d’erreur. Le « calcul » moral résultant de l’estimation du coût et du bénéfice dérive d’une prise de décision tout d’abord intuitive ainsi que de la narration produite par la raison et à laquelle nous finissons par croire. La réponse habituelle des philosophes à ce type de défi est que le cerveau ne peut être responsable des décisions morales et de nos actes, de même que la neuroscience ne peut nous informer comment la « raison éthique » travaille pour le sens du moral. L’une des dernières œuvres de Mike Kelley, qui comprend plusieurs séries réalisées entre 1999 et 2011, est consacrée à Kandor, la ville natale de Superman sur la planète Krypton : une architecture phallique miniaturisée, maintenue sous cloche dans une atmosphère séparée, et dont la forme, dans les vignettes des comics d’origine, ne cesse de subir des variations au fil des épisodes. Partant de ces dessins à la mémoire labile, Kelley produit un ensemble d’installations multimédias qui reprennent des codes visuels typiques (...) de la science-fiction, mais dont l’expérience, pour le spectateur, s’avère excluante plutôt qu’immersive. D’un point de vue phénoménologique, il est question d’appréhender les Kandors comme des réticences, et d’interroger les différents enjeux de cette présence paradoxale. Porteuses de fonctions complexes à la portée psychique autant que collective, ces installations sont d’abord des paraboles du conditionnement social et de ses moules, ce qui inclut et met à l’épreuve leurs propres modalités de réception critique. Par ailleurs, les Kandors engagent tout un jeu de réminiscences formelles qui questionne les mécanismes de fabrication de la mémoire officielle, et la relation amnésique que celle-ci entretient avec certains types de formes principalement issues de la culture populaire. One of Mike Kelley’s latest works, which includes several series produced between 1999 and 2011, is dedicated to Kandor, Superman’s hometown on the planet Krypton: a miniature phallic architecture, kept in a bell jar in a separate atmosphere, and the form of which, portrayed in the original comic strips, continues to undergo change through each episode. Based on these labile memory drawings, Kelley produces a set of multimedia installations which draw from Sci-Fi visual codes, but the experience of which, for the viewer, is exclusive rather than immersive. From a phenomenological point of view, we must consider the Kandors as reluctances, and question the different stakes of this paradoxical presence. Carrying complex functions with psychic as well as collective scope, they will first be seen as parables of social conditioning, including their own critical reception. Moreover, the Kandors imply a whole game of formal recollections which questions the mechanisms of manufacturing official memory, and the amnesic relationship which this maintains with certain types of forms derived mainly from popular culture. S’il part ainsi d’une problématique empiriste (...) de l’expérience (comment, dans le donné, peut-il se constituer un sujet tel qu’il dépasse le donné ?), il estime qu’il faut également chercher à comprendre, à partir de l’expérience elle-même en tant que vécu, la nécessité du rapport entre expérience et subjectivité : si c’est l’expérience qui « produit » le sujet, celui-ci faisant alors figure de dérivé ou d’ « épiphénomène », comment comprendre la « nécessité » de cette production, ainsi que le fait que, une fois constitué, le sujet se définit en retour comme un élément essentiel à l’expérience ? Le sujet de l’expérience ne fait-il que répéter indéfiniment des événements originaires dont le sens lui échappe, ou participe-t-il effectivement à la réalité des expériences qui l’affectent ? Author continues the publication which appeared in the Acta Biotheoretica I, p. 113–132, regarding his results obtained in course of research work on superior plants:Picea excelsa trees, and furthermore on unicellular living beings, namely yeast cells . Author made a pure culture with the unicellular culture method, and by occasional inoculation produced successors therefrom. He established the progress in development by measuring, according to weight, the CO2 which arose in course of life. The ontogenetic course of development of the original (...) culture as well as that of the successors took the form ofS but theseS curves were not equally precipitous . When he drew theS-formed development curves in the measure of their time of inoculation in a rectangular co-ordinate system, he received a wave-surface . When he intersected the wave-surface with the abscissa and the plane parallel with the vertical axis, wave-like lines were the result, which resembled vibratory motion evolving around an axis producing a regular picture . Or il est intéressant de souligner que, loin d’être une simple (...) dispute de mots, ce à quoi cherche à la réduire D’Alembert, cette querelle est avant tout une discussion sur les premiers principes et les principes dérivés : quels sont les principes fondateurs, quels sont les principes seconds? Notre propos est de montrer que D’Alembert, dans la position qu’il prend pour mettre fin au débat, a été fortement influencé et formé par les réflexions sur la physique que développe Émilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749), dans les Institutions de Physique parues en 1740. According to the objection from positive duties, Kant's Formula of Universal Law is flawed because it cannot be used to derive any affirmative moral requirements. This paper offers a response to that objection and proposes a novel way to derive positive duties from Kant's formula. The Formula of Universal Law yields positive duties to adopt our own perfection and others’ happiness as ends because we could not rationally fail to will those ends as universal ends.

We discuss a `negative' way of defining frame classes in (multi)modal logic, and address the question of whether these classes can be axiomatized by derivation rules, the `non-ξ rules', styled after Gabbay's Irreflexivity Rule. The main result of this paper is a metatheorem on completeness, of the following kind: If Λ is a derivation system having a set of axioms that are special Sahlqvist formulas and Λ+ is the extension of Λ with a set of non-ξ rules, then Λ+ is (...) strongly sound and complete with respect to the class of frames determined by the axioms and the rules. The traditional view of evidence in mathematics is that evidence is just proof and proof is just derivation. There are good reasons for thinking that this view should be rejected: it misrepresents both historical and current mathematical practice. Nonetheless, evidence, proof, and derivation are closely intertwined. This paper seeks to tease these concepts apart. It emphasizes the role of argumentation as a context shared by evidence, proofs, and derivations. The utility of argumentation theory, in general, and argumentation schemes, in particular, (...) as a methodology for the study of mathematical practice is thereby demonstrated. Argumentation schemes represent an almost untapped resource for mathematics education. Notably, they provide a consistent treatment of rigorous and non-rigorous argumentation, thereby working to exhibit the continuity of reasoning in mathematics with reasoning in other areas. Moreover, since argumentation schemes are a comparatively mature methodology, there is a substantial body of existing work to draw upon, including some increasingly sophisticated software tools. Such tools have significant potential for the analysis and evaluation of mathematical argumentation. The first four sections of the paper address the relationships of evidence to proof, proof to derivation, argument to proof, and argument to evidence, respectively. The final section directly addresses some of the educational implications of an argumentation scheme account of mathematical reasoning. (shrink)

Derivational robustness may increase the degree to which various pieces of evidence indirectly confirm a robust result. There are two ways in which this increase may come about. First, if one can show that a result is robust, and that the various individual models used to derive it also have other confirmed results, these other results may indirectly confirm the robust result. Confirmation derives from the fact that data not known to bear on a result are shown to be relevant (...) when it is shown to be robust. Second, robustness may increase the degree to which the robust result is indirectly confirmed if it increases the weight with which existing evidence indirectly confirms it. This may happen when it strengthens the connection between the core and the robust result by showing that auxiliaries are not responsible for the result. (shrink)

Orthodoxy has it that only metaphysically elite properties can be invoked in scientifically elite laws. We argue that this claim does not fit scientific practice. An examination of candidate scientifically elite laws like Newton’s F = ma reveals properties invoked that are irreversibly defined and thus metaphysically non-elite by the lights of the surrounding theory: Newtonian acceleration is irreversibly defined as the second derivative of position, and Newtonian resultant force is irreversibly defined as the sum of the component forces. We (...) think that scientists are happy to invoke metaphysically non-elite properties in scientifically elite laws for reasons of convenience, such as to simplify the equations and to make them more modular. The Born rule is derived from operational assumptions, together with assumptions of quantum mechanics that concern only the deterministic development of the state. Unlike Gleason’s theorem, the argument applies even if probabilities are de…ned for only a single resolution of the identity, so it applies to a variety of foundational approaches to quantum mechanics. It also provides a probability rule for state spaces that are not Hilbert spaces.

Financial derivatives have been singled out as the major villain in the latest crisis, particularly through speculative trading by banks. Yet little attention has been paid to the fundamental rôle that derivatives play in modern capitalism. Even less has there been a focus on how the boom in derivatives-trading was prompted by the crisis of profitability and capital-accumulation. This article shows that while derivatives were one means by which speculation took off, the momentum behind this was driven by low profitability. (...) That was why banks turned their mortgage-loans into derivative-driven securities, why pension-funds placed bets on commodity-futures and why countries such as Greece used derivatives to hide the real state of their finances. Derivatives helped determine the form and magnitude of the crisis, but were not its underlying cause. Proposed reforms of the derivatives-market ignore the fundamental determinants of the financial crisis, assuming it to be a failure of regulation. (shrink)

Many philosophers of physics think that physical rates of change, like velocity or acceleration in classical physics, are extrinsic. Many philosophers of mind think that phenomenal properties, which characterize what it’s like to be an agent at a time, are intrinsic. I will argue that these two views can’t both be true. Given that these two views are in tension, we face an explanatory challenge. Why should there be any interesting connection between these physical quantities and consciousness in the first (...) place? In a speculative spirit, I close by developing a panpsychist view which promises to explain this connection in a particularly satisfying way. (shrink)

The central objection to the constitution view is the too many thinkers problem - if the animal that constitutes you thinks and you are not it, then there are two thinkers within the region you occupy. Lynne Rudder Baker claims that the animal thinks only derivatively, in virtue of constituting the person that thinks nonderivatively, and this leads to a solution to the too many thinkers problem. This paper offers two objections to Baker’s solution. First, the idea of derivative/ nonderivative (...) properties faces a dilemma unacceptable to constitutionalists: either the too many thinkers problem is reinstated or the constitution view is undermined by the idea itself. Further, Baker should concede that the person thinks in virtue of brain functions. This implies, contra Baker’s claim, that the person thinks derivatively and the animal thinks nonderivatively. The paper also considers a way in which Baker might respond to the two objections. (shrink)

This chapter derives and refines a novel normative moral theory and descriptive theory of moral psychology--Rightness as Fairness--from the theory of prudence defended in Chapter 2. It briefly summarizes Chapter 2’s finding that prudent agents typically internalize ‘moral risk-aversion’. It then outlines how this prudential psychology leads prudent agents to want to know how to act in ways they will not regret in morally salient cases, as well as to regard moral actions as the only types of actions that satisfy (...) this prudential interest. It then uses these findings to defend a new derivation of my (2016) theory of morality, Rightness as Fairness, showing how the derivation successfully defends Rightness as Fairness against a variety of objections. The chapter also details how this book’s theory helps to substantiate the claim that Rightness as Fairness unifies a variety of competing moral frameworks: deontology, consequentialism, contractualism, and virtue ethics. Finally, the chapter shows how Chapter 2’s theory of prudence entails some revisions to Rightness as Fairness, including the adoption of a series of Rawlsian original positions to settle moral and social-political issues under ideal and nonideal circumstances—thus entailing a unified normative and descriptive psychological framework for prudence, morality, and justice. In a rather old paper, Mario Liu described a hydrodynamic Maxwell equations. While he also discussed potential implications of these new approaches to superconductors, such a discussion of electrodynamics of superconductors is made only after Tajmar’s paper. Therefore, in this paper we present for the first time a derivation of fluidic Maxwell-Proca equations. The name of fluidic Maxwell-Proca is proposed because the equations were based on modifying Maxwell-Proca and Hirsch’s theory of electrodynamics of superconductor. It is hoped that this paper (...) may stimulate further investigations and experiments in superconductor. It may be expected to have some impact to cosmology modeling too, for instance we consider a hypothetical argument that photon mass can be origin of gravitation. Then, after combining with the so-called chiral modification of Maxwell equations (after Spröessig), then we consider chiral Maxwell-Proca equations as possible alternative of gravitation theory. Such a hypothesis has never considered in literature to the best of our knowledge. (shrink)

What semantics should we attribute to nouns like "wisdom" and "generosity", which are derived from gradable adjectives? We show that, from a morphosyntactic standpoint, these nouns are mass nouns. This leads us to consider and answer the following questions. How are these nouns interpreted in their various uses? What formal representations may one associate with their interpretations? How do these depend on the semantics of the adjective? And where lies the semantic unity of nouns like wisdom and generosity with the (...) more familiar concrete mass nouns, like wine and furniture? This paper has two goals. First, I offer an interpretation of Nietzsche’s puzzling claims about will to power. I argue that the will to power thesis is a version of constitutivism. Constitutivism is the view that we can derive substantive normative conclusions from an account of the nature of agency; in particular, constitutivism rests on the idea that all actions are motivated by a common, higher-order aim, whose presence generates a standard of assessment for actions. Nietzsche’s version of constitutivism is (...) based on a series of subtle claims about the psychology of willing and the nature of satisfaction, which imply that all actions aim at encountering and overcoming resistance (this is what Nietzsche means by “will to power”). Second, I argue that Nietzsche’s theory, thus interpreted, generates a new, a posteriori version of constitutivism that is not vulnerable to certain familiar objections. If this is right, then we can deploy Nietzschean ideas in order to make a substantive contribution to issues that are currently at the forefront of ethics and action theory. (shrink)

This chapter argues that quantum indeterminacy can be construed as a merely derivative phenomenon. The possibility of merely derivative quantum indeterminacy undermines both a recent argument against quantum indeterminacy due to David Glick, and an argument against the possibility of merely derivative indeterminacy due to Elizabeth Barnes.

We show that the physical meaning of the wave function can be derived based on the established parts of quantum mechanics. It turns out that the wave function represents the state of random discontinuous motion of particles, and its modulus square determines the probability density of the particles appearing in certain positions in space.

A rigorous ab initio derivation of the (square of) Dirac’s equation for a particle with spin is presented. The Lagrangian of the classical relativistic spherical top is modified so to render it invariant with respect conformal changes of the metric of the top configuration space. The conformal invariance is achieved by replacing the particle mass in the Lagrangian with the conformal Weyl scalar curvature. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the particle is found to be linearized, exactly and in closed form, by (...) an ansatz solution that can be straightforwardly interpreted as the “quantum wave function” of the 4-spinor solution of Dirac’s equation. All quantum features arise from the subtle interplay between the conformal curvature acting on the particle as a potential and the particle motion which affects the geometric “pre-potential” associated to the conformal curvature itself. The theory, carried out here by assuming a Minkowski metric, can be easily extended to arbitrary space-time Riemann metric, e.g. the one adopted in the context of General Relativity. This novel theoretical scenario appears to be of general application and is expected to open a promising perspective in the modern endeavor aimed at the unification of the natural forces with gravitation. At the heart of Rik Peels’s Responsible Belief: A Theory in Ethics and Epistemology is the idea that responsibility for belief ought to be understood on the model of responsibility for states of affairs that are subject to our influence but not under our intentional control, or what he calls derivative responsibility. In this article, I argue that reflection on the nature and scope of derivative responsibility reveals important lacunae in Peels’s account of responsible belief and his account of responsibility (...) for belief. This paper shows how to derive nested calculi from labelled calculi for propositional intuitionistic logic and first-order intuitionistic logic with constant domains, thus connecting the general results for labelled calculi with the more refined formalism of nested sequents. The extraction of nested calculi from labelled calculi obtains via considerations pertaining to the elimination of structural rules in labelled derivations. Each aspect of the extraction process is motivated and detailed, showing that each nested calculus inherits favorable proof-theoretic properties from its associated (...) labelled calculus. (shrink)

The purpose of the paper, part of a project by Boston University Law School, is to examine derivatives law and practice in selected Middle Eastern countries including the UAE.

The notions of conservation and relativity lie at the heart of classical mechanics, and were critical to its early development. However, in Newton’s theory of mechanics, these symmetry principles were eclipsed by domain-specific laws. In view of the importance of symmetry principles in elucidating the structure of physical theories, it is natural to ask to what extent conservation and relativity determine the structure of mechanics. In this paper, we address this question by deriving classical mechanics—both nonrelativistic and relativistic—using relativity and (...) conservation as the primary guiding principles. The derivation proceeds in three distinct steps. First, conservation and relativity are used to derive the asymptotically conserved quantities of motion. Second, in order that energy and momentum be continuously conserved, the mechanical system is embedded in a larger energetic framework containing a massless component that is capable of bearing energy. Imposition of conservation and relativity then results, in the nonrelativistic case, in the conservation of mass and in the frame-invariance of massless energy; and, in the relativistic case, in the rules for transforming massless energy and momentum between frames. Third, a force framework for handling continuously interacting particles is established, wherein Newton’s second law is derived on the basis of relativity and a staccato model of motion-change. Finally, in light of the derivation, we elucidate the structure of mechanics by classifying the principles and assumptions that have been employed according to their explanatory role, distinguishing between symmetry principles and other types of principles that are needed to build up the theoretical edifice. The aim of this article is to study the notion of derivability and its semantic counterpart in the context of non-transitive and non-reflexive substructural logics. For this purpose we focus on the study cases of the logics _S__T_ and _T__S_. In this respect, we show that this notion doesn’t coincide, in general, with a nowadays broadly used semantic approach towards metainferential validity: the notion of local validity. Following this, and building on some previous work by Humberstone, we prove that in (...) these systems derivability can be characterized in terms of a notion we call absolute global validity. However, arriving at these results doesn’t lead us to disregard local validity. This paper contributes to the debate on the role of financial derivatives for capitalism. It responds to Bryan and Rafferty’s defence of their analysis and their critique of my own. The paper argues that their analysis confuses what a financial derivative does, and mixes together different kinds of derivative – and non-derivative – that play very different roles. After detailing these points, the paper discusses the relationship between gold, money and derivatives, rejecting their notion that derivatives are some kind of (...) new ‘commodity money’. An important theme absent from Bryan and Rafferty’s analysis is the relationship of financial trading and derivatives markets to parasitism in the imperialist world economy. To illustrate this, the paper notes advantages enjoyed by the major financial powers – the US and the UK – that are the main centres for the origination of derivatives and for derivatives trading.
