A dispetto della stroncatura di Aristotele, Ippone, nel V secolo a.C., si dimostra un pensatore ben inserito nelle correnti culturali più vive ed interessanti del suo secolo. Accomunato ai Milesi per aver posto l’acqua come principio di tutte le cose, è stato considerato anche un pitagorico per aver affermato l’importanza del gioco dei contrari nel nascere e nell’evolversi delle cose. In realtà, queste caratterizzazioni si dimostrano piuttosto generiche, e l’appartenenza a questa o a quella scuola non dà ragione della specificità (...) della sua posizione nell’ambiente culturale mediterraneo e magno-greco, specificità ben rinvenibile anche nella scarsezza delle testimonianze. Più che l’acqua, per Ippone, ammesso che abbia voluto stabilire un’arché di tutte le cose, è l’umido a giocare un ruolo fondamentale nell’essere e nel divenire delle cose. In questo articolo si tenta anche di tracciare un profilo della storia dell’umido, dai Milesi a Eraclito, ad Alcmeone, a Diogene di Apollonia, fino a Democrito. E si vuole inoltre sottolineare come esso rientri anche nel campo specifico delle sue riflessioni, incentrate soprattutto nel campo biologico ed embriologico, riflessioni sempre obbedienti, più che a teorie generali, all’osservazione dell’esperienza concreta. L'idea centrale delle Lezioni Eleatiche di Giovanni Casertano e che, nel misurarsi con Parmenide, Platone tiene conto della rilettura che era stata fatta da Protagora e Gorgia col proposito di ristabilire, in contrasto con il loro schema interpretativo, la possibilita di accedere ad una verita che sia oggettiva, indipendentemente dalle interpretazioni soggettive. Il suo tentativo si scontra pero con la difficolta di fondare ontologicamente il non essere attraverso la riduzione del falso all'alterita, e Platone si vede indotto a (...) riaffermare la centralita del linguaggio. Diagoras and Theodorus are two of the atheists remembered in several catalogues of atheists in Antiquity, the first of which dates back to the 2nd century BC, and from then on invariably referredto by the ancients and to the present day as atheists. In fact, the atheism condemned in Athens had its roots in the pre-Socratic philosophical and scientific culture, whose fundamentally "materialistic" imprint is authoritatively testified to by Aristotle (MetaphysicsI 983b5-10). The philosophies of Anaximander, Anaximenes, Xenophanes, Heraclitus, Anaxagoras, Diogenes (...) of Apollonia, and of course the Atomists and Sophists offered, albeit in different ways, not only some important support for the critique of traditional divinities, but also for the philosophical foundations of atheism. Diagoras has nothing to do with this tradition; even some events in his life may at most merit the accusation of being impious, but not of being an atheist. heodore appears to be of a different cultural temperament, close not only to the culture of the Cyrenaic school, but also to that of the Cynics and the Sophists. We have not only references to his philosophical doctrines, but also clear evidence of his atheism, having dedicated himself to "radically eliminating common beliefs in the gods". In conclusion, while Diagora's name can safely be removed from the catalogues of atheists, Theodore's is rightly included. (shrink)

This analysis of Plato's Republic begins with brief notes on the life and works of Plato, then offers a summary of the books that make up the Republic, identifying each one with one of the most important themes and problems that characterize the dialogue: justice, philosophy, happiness, desire, myth. The volume concludes with an appendix that deals with the question of truth and appearance, and its relationship to virtue and to the good of the city.

Because for someone to laughs or to smile, it requires to be in the company of others, and involved in a certain situation which somehow sparks in us that kind of reaction. This note will provide a sketch for a research on the various situations in which characters laugh or smile in the Platonic dialogues. There is a ridiculous situation that emerges in (...) a discussion, when the interlocutors speak by themselves without taking into account what the other says ; another ridiculous situation emerges involuntarily from an intervention or remark from one of the interlocutors ; another more subjective one emerges from certain behaviors in particular situations. Moreover, there are interesting indications about the very nature of the ridiculous and the proper way to use it in comedy or in the interactions between people. (shrink)

Come si pone Platone di fronte al mare? Dalla lettura dei suoi dialoghi emerge una visione complessa, e che tocca vari campi delle sue riflessioni. Platone ne sente il fascino e allo stesso tempo ne avverte i pericoli, non solo quelli connessi alla navigazione, ma anche quelli morali, che derivano dalla presenza nei porti di uomini di varie provenienze, per lo più con atteggiamenti volgari e sboccati; e poi quelli legati alla ricchezza dei beni in essi accumulati, con la necessaria (...) e conseguente corruzione dei costumi. E sembra che ci sia in Platone, da un lato, una nostalgia del passato, di quando la città era piccola, e la vita era semplice, legata fondamentalmente all’agricoltura, con pochi bisogni. Ma, dall’altro lato, e allo stesso tempo, è ben cosciente che il commercio marittimo è ormai strettamente legato alla crescita e all’evoluzione della città, ed escogita una serie di provvedimenti miranti al contenimento di quei pericoli. Platone parla di tutto questo, e di altro ancora, nel suo “stile” unico ed inimitabile, mescolando ragionamenti logici con metafore, analogie, immagini. Una delle metafore più belle, e sviluppata in una serie di originali considerazioni, è quella tra il mare ed il discorso: il mare è come il discorso, o, se si vuole, il discorso è come il mare, pieno di pericoli ma assolutamente indispensabile per la vita in comune tra gli uomini. Il Timeo è quindi la continuazione dei discorsi sulla «città bella», sulla distinzione dei cittadini in tre classi, sull’educazione degli uomini nella città, sulla comunanza dei beni, delle donne e dei figli. Un dialogo «politico», dunque? Non esattamente. O meglio, un dialogo che inquadra la politica della città in un orizzonte «cosmico», nel quale la vita, le vicende, la storia della città degli uomini si trovino ad essere inserite in una vita ed una storia molto più ampie, quella dell’universo intero.

El Timeo es por lo tanto la continuación de los discursos sobre la «ciudad perfecta», sobre la distinción de los ciudadanos en tres clases, sobre la educación de los hombres en la ciudad, sobre la comunidad de las propiedades, mujeres y niños. Entonces, ¿es un diálogo «político»? Risk and crisis communication (RCC) is a current ethical issue subject to controversy, mainly due to the tension between individual liberty (a core component of fairness) and effectiveness. In this paper we propose a consistent definition of the RCC process in public health emergencies (PHERCC), which comprises six key elements: evidence, initiator, channel, publics, message, and feedback. Based on these elements and on a detailed analysis of their role in PHERCC, we present an ethical framework to help design, govern and (...) evaluate PHERCC strategies. The framework aims to facilitate RCC, incorporating effectiveness, autonomy, and fairness. It comprises five operational ethical principles: openness, transparency, inclusivity, understandability, and privacy. The resulting matrix helps understanding the interplay between the PHERCC process and the principles of the framework. The paper includes suggestions and recommendations for the implementation of the PHERCC matrix. (shrink)

The focus of Through Your Eyes: Religious Alterity and the Early Modern Western Imaginations is the (mostly Western) understanding, representation and self-critical appropriation of the "religious other" between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. Mutually constitutive processes of selfing/othering are observed through the lenses of creedal Jews, a bhakti Brahmin, a widely translated Morisco historian, a collector of Western and Eastern singularia, Christian missionaries in Asia, critical converts, toleration theorists, and freethinkers: in other words, people dwelling in an 'in-between' space which (...) undermines any binary conception of the Self and the Other.
