The health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic revealed limitations in health systems worldwide, making it necessary to establish a bioethical framework that provides tools to drive health professionals’ decision-making amid scarce health resources. Bioethical models such as principlism, utilitarianism, and personalism seek to focus clinical decisions on respect for people’s rights and dignity, thus protecting the medical practice. Personalism provides a person-centered approach to respect for human dignity during health emergencies to avoid giving material meaning to the individual. Decision (...) criteria are required to face bioethical conflicts in clinical practice, reducing the legal, emotional, and ethical burden of decision-making in pandemic situations. (shrink)

In this paper we deal with the work of the german poet Heinrich von Kleist, specifically with his reading of the knowledge theory of Immanuel Kant. We intend show how the reception of Kantian philosophy mark the life and work of the poet, who saw his higher plans – “gather truth and acquire formation” – ruined by a type of thinking that would denied the access to the truth and to the world.

For over eight hundred years, philosophers—men and women—who called themselves Cynics, literally "dogs" in their language, roamed the streets and byways of the Hellenistic world, teaching strange ideas and practicing a bizarre way of life. Among them, the most important and distinctive was Diogenes of Sinope, who became the archetype of Classical Cynicism. In this comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and engaging book, philosopher Luis E. Navia undertakes the task of reconstructing Diogenes' life and extracting from him lessons that are valuable (...) in our time. The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 provides a biographical sketch of Diogenes constructed on the basis of ancient testimonies. In Chapter 2, the practice of Cynicism, as exemplified by Diogenes, is elucidated. This "war against the world," as Navia describes it, especially the rhetoric of Cynicism, was the primary medium used by the Cynics to convey their message. Chapter 3 clarifies the roots and basis of the Cynic metamorphosis, that is, the process by which Diogenes transformed himself into a dog. This process involves complex psychological, sociological, and philosophical factors, chief among which was Socrates' influence on Diogenes through the agency of Antisthenes. Chapter 4 reconstructs the philosophy of Diogenes by identifying twelve principles of his thought. In Chapter 5, the influence of Diogenes is discussed. Navia emphasizes the vast difference between Diogenes' ideas and style of life on the one hand and, on the other, what is nowadays called cynicism. The book provides abundant references to ancient testimonies and modern scholarship. Luis E. Navia provides a comprehensive examination of the ideas and contributions of a Greek philosopher who was influential in the development of classical Cynicism. Based on both primary and secondary sources as well as the findings of modern scholarship, it is a unique contribution to the study of Antisthenes. An important philosopher, only two English-language books about him have been published in the last eighty years. With his clear and accessible narrative style, Navia succeeds in reconstructing Antisthenes' (...) biography resurrecting this ancient philosopher's ideas as still relevant to this day. Se nos juízos científicos ou empíricos a objetividade é possível pela existência de entidades independentes, que tipo de fatos poderiam assegurar a objetividade de julgamentos ético-morais? Tanto para Habermas como para Putnam os valores éticos têm uma certa objetividade que emana do “reconhecimento intersubjetivo de standars de avaliação para os quais podemos encontrar boas razões” no contexto de um estilo de vida particular. No entanto, para Habermas, essa validade não é mais suficiente na situação das sociedades contemporâneas, onde é preciso (...) regular os conflitos e as relações entre diversos grupos com ideais muitas vezes conflitantes. Os objetivos deste trabalho são: 1) reconstruir os argumentos básicos desta controversia 2) adotar uma concepção sobre alguns dos pontos em questão, indicando uma forma de integrar os aspectos de ambas as visões, à qual poderia chegar ao alvo que eles compartilham, a saber, fundar a possibilidade de uma ética cognitivista que contorna os problemas do relativismo sem cair nas dificuldades de realismo metafísico. More than a school of philosophy with a defined set of beliefs and convictions, classical Cynicism represents an unconventional sect of philosophers and a way of life. This is a complete account of classical Cynicism from its beginnings in the Socratic circle to its extinction in late Roman times. In this thoroughly documented study, Navia explores various issues related to the sources of information about the Cynics, the development of Cynicism, and the principal representatives of classical Cynicism. The deformation and wear events that underlie microwear and macrowear signals commonly used for dietary reconstruction in fossil animals can be replicated and quantified by controlled laboratory tests on extracted tooth specimens in conjunction with fundamental micromechanics analysis. Key variables governing wear relations include angularity, stiffness (modulus), and size of the contacting particle, along with material properties of enamel. Both axial and sliding contacts can result in the removal of tooth enamel. The degree of removal, characterized by a “wear coefficient,” (...) varies strongly with particle content at the occlusal interface. Conditions leading to a transition from mild to severe wear are discussed. Measurements of wear traces can provide information about contact force and particle shape. The potential utility of the micromechanics methodology as an adjunct for investigating tooth durability and reconstructing diet is explored. (shrink)

Comienza mostrando el análisis que Wittgenstein hace de los dos errores básicos que estarían en la base de la creencia en la posibilidad de un lenguaje privado: que las palabras adquieren significado por ostención y que la experiencia humana es esencialmente privada. A partir de allí muchas de las concepciones clásicas sobre la experiencia, (...) la certeza, la duda y la naturaleza del conocimiento comienzan a alterarse. Algunos de los problemas centrales de la filosofia del conocimiento parecen desmontarse.: This paper aims to show the stucture and the argumentation track of what is generally reconstrued as the "argument against a private language". Firstly, it presents the analysis made by Wittgenstein about two errors to be found supporting the belive in the possibility of a private language, namely, that the words get their meaning trough ostension, and that human experience is essentially private. Therefrom, much of the classic believes about experience, certainty, doubt, and the nature of knowledge began to change. Así, el abandono del mito de lo subjetivo y su sustitución por la idea del carácter esencialmente intersubjetivo del pensamiento y de sus contenidos; la (...) asunción del carácter esencialmente social del lenguaje y, con él, de la normatividad y, ya en un plano metafilosófico,el abandono del fundacionismo y la simultánea refutación, por inconsistencia, de su contracara, el escepticismo filosófico.---“Davidson’s Antiskeptic Argument as a Convergence of Radical Innovations”. This article exposes Davidson’s antiskeptical strategy. After that analysis it aims to turn clear that the arguments and tools used in this and other aspects of Davidson’s works imply the removal of some of the basic assumptions of the dominant philosophical paradigm of Cartesian basis. Thus: the abandonment of the myth of the subjective and its substitution by the idea of the essentially intersubjective character of thought and its contents; the assumption of the essentially social character of language and, with it, of the normativity, and, in a metaphilosophical level, the abandonment of the foundacionism and the simultaneous rebuttal, by inconsistency, of philosophical skepticism. Além disso, vários docentes uruguaios têm hoje dez anos de experiência no ensino da Teoria do Conhecimento no Programa de Diploma do Bacharelado Internacional. Deste ponto de partida, eu quero refletir sobre as possibilidades, as conquistas e as deficiências desses cursos, como uma das contribuições centrais para educar os alunos em uma mente cosmopolita em um mundo globalizado. Parece-me que a educação cosmopolita deve ser pensada para permitir que os alunos aprendam a informação o equipamento conceitual e as ferramentas metodológicas para entender que "as condições de vida em qualquer lugar na Terra são profundamente afetadas por interações internacionais de vários tipos".Summary: Uruguay is perhaps one of the few countries in the world where students have three core courses of Philosophy in their pre-university education. Besides we have now ten years experience teaching Theory of Knowledge in the Diploma Program of International Baccalaureate. From this start point, I want to reflect on the possibilities, the achievements and the deficiencies of these courses, as one of the central contributions to educate students in a cosmopolitan mind for a globalized world. It seems that cosmopolitan education should be designed to put the students in conditions of learning information, conceptual equipment and methodological tools to understand that “the living conditions anywhere on earth are deeply affected by international interactions of various kinds".Keywords: Philosophy, Teaching, Globalization. En este artículo se presenta una aproximación al tratamiento otorgado a los judíos migrantes de Asia a América y Colombia entre 1880 y 1930, principalmente desde las legislaciones que se produjeron. Dicho contexto legal, acompañado de la mención a la discusión sobre la cuestión de la raza que se realizó en 1920, permiten plantear que en el contexto de la modernización que se estaba produciendo en el continente americano, los judíos que ingresaran a los países correspondientes debían comprometerse con los (...) programas de desarrollo y progreso de las naciones. En este artículo se plantea la hipótesis interpretativa de que una lectura retrospectiva de los textos en los que Emmanuel Lévinas se refirió a la muerte, permitiría captar si sus análisis estaban ya en los primeros trabajos de su formulación ético-metafísica, en la base del pluralismo del cara-a-cara. Con el fi n de mostrar esta hipótesis se revisan las menciones a la muerte en las obras levinasianas invirtiendo la habitual cronología ascendente.

En el siguiente artículo, el planteamiento filosófico-metafísico de Lévinas es abordado desde su formulación de la subjetividad como Yo y Mismo hasta la aparición del Otro, para plantear que la idea de lo infinito anuncia la orientación del Mismo hacia el Otro. De este modo, la noción de pluralismo en Lévinas queda enmarcada en dos condiciones fundamentales: la subjetividad separada fundada en la idea de lo infinito, y su orientación hacia el Otro que proviene de la idea de lo infinito (...) en el Otro. La propuesta de naturalización de la epistemología explicitada por Quine en su célebre artículo de 1969 ha generado debates y consecuencias que de algún modo se prolongan hasta nuestros días a través de la evaluación de diversas propuestas de naturalización, todas ellas de algún modo vinculadas a la idea original de Quine. Sin embargo, varios aspectos bastante centrales de su propuesta continúan sin ser suficientemente aclarados. Ni siquiera se ha logrado consenso sobre cuáles serían las tareas específicas de una epistemología (...) naturalizada y cuáles retoma de la tradición. La persistencia de dichos debates no debería resultar sorprendente si uno considera que, al menos para la interpretación inicial, se estaría proponiendo un programa descriptivo para una disciplina que tenía un propósito claramente normativo; o que se estaba proponiendo apoyarse en las ciencias cuando la disciplina había nacido precisamente para fundamentar a esos estudios. Incluso, que se trataba de proponer una filosofía luego que se prescindiera de la aprioridad y de la analiticidad, cuando la tradición había concebido a la filosofía justamente a partir de ese tipo de enunciados. Para colmo, la epistemología naturalizada proclamaba abiertamente que entre epistemología y ciencias no habría fundamentación sino circularidad supuestamente no ilegítima. Eran pues, varias y fundamentales las posiciones de la tradición que aparecían así claramente desafiadas. En este sentido, en este trabajo nos proponemos: 1 – Revisar sumariamente el contenido básico de la propuesta de naturalización en relación a los temas clásicos de la teoría del conocimiento. 2 – Analizar y evaluar la acusación de falta de normatividad de la epistemología naturalizada. 3 – Analizar el tema de la aprioridad y la analiticidad en relación a las tareas filosóficas de la epistemología naturalizada. 4 – Analizar el posible fundamento y la supuesta circularidad de la propuesta de naturalización.En todos los casos vamos a defender una interpretación algo alejada de la que ha sido mayoritaria y vamos a apoyarnos para ello en la propios desarrollos epistemológicos de Quine y en algunas aclaraciones realizadas por el autor en escritos tardíos. En el tema del fundamento y la circularidad creemos oportuno vincular su posición con la idea de equilibrio reflexivo de Goodman y con desarrollos más recientes en teoría de la justificación no lineal. The task of reconstructing the philosopher's life, however, is exceedingly difficult, because in his case, more than in those of other ancient philosophers, we must deal not only with the scarcity of reliable sources and testimonies, but also with the mountains of anecdotal and fictional accounts that are responsible for the creation of (...) a veritable literary legend around the Cynic who once lived in a tub.
