Adapting with Microbial Help: Microbiome Flexibility Facilitates Rapid Responses to Environmental Change.Christian R. Voolstra & Maren Ziegler - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (7):2000004.
Animals and plants are metaorganisms and associate with microbes that affect their physiology, stress tolerance, and fitness. Here the hypothesis that alteration of the microbiome may constitute a fast‐response mechanism to environmental change is examined. This is supported by recent reciprocal transplant experiments with reef corals, which have shown that their microbiome adapts to thermally variable habitats and changes over time when transplanted into different environments. Further, inoculation of corals with beneficial bacteria increases their stress tolerance. But corals differ in (...)

    BioEssays 7/2020.Christian R. Voolstra & Maren Ziegler - 2020 - Bioessays 42 (7):2070071.
Graphical AbstractIn article number 2000004 by Christian R. Voolstra and Maren Ziegler, microbiome flexibility, i.e., the potential for dynamic restructuring of the host microbiome, as a fast-response mechanism to environmental change is examined. How scales of microbiome flexibility may reflect different metaorganism adaptation mechanisms and future research directions are discussed. Adapting with microbial help may provide an alternate route to organismal adaptation that facilitates rapid responses. Parabolic Life: Toward an Ethics of God’s Apocalypse.Philip G. Ziegler - 2021 - Studies in Christian Ethics 34 (4):426-438.
Christian ethicist Nancy Duff has suggested that an apocalyptic hearing of the gospel elicits a parabolic understanding of the Christian moral life. How might the theological basis and rationale of this claim be elaborated? What is it about human life funded by the gospel of God’s apocalypse in Jesus Christ that makes ‘parable’ an apt description of the quality of its action? And how might these notions be elaborated to enrich our understanding of responsible moral action more generally? This article (...)

‘Getting the Reformation in America’: The Making of Paul Lehmann as a Public Theologian.Philip G. Ziegler - 2018 - Studies in Christian Ethics 31 (1):79-107.
Paul L. Lehmann was one of the leading Protestant theologians and ethicists of his generation. Working directly from archival sources and early writings, this article offers an account of the formation of key features of his distinctive theological perspective up to and including the first decades of his professional career. It argues that Lehmann prosecutes a distinctive and markedly Protestant form of public theology, centred on an understanding of the Word of God as a present, dynamic and humanising power, to (...)

Is it Time for a Reformation of Spiritual Formation?: Recovering Ontology.Geordie W. Ziegler - 2018 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 11 (1):74-92.
This essay presents a trinitarian alternative to anthropologically-centered forms of Spiritual formation. As such it argues that what is commonly practiced is a “subjective moral formation,” and what is proposed as a solution or antidote to this is an “objective trinitarian participation.” Christologically anemic versions of anthropologically-centered Spiritual formation are examined and contrasted against an approach grounded in a christological ontology. It contends that the critical question for any Spiritual formation framework, practice, or system must be, “What work does the (...)

The claims of Mt. 5:17—20 are often taken to provide the interpretive key to the ethical claims of the Sermon on the Mount as a whole. The theological issue at stake here is the determinative relation between Christ's person and work and his teaching. This article explores the vital role played by the identity of Christ as the `fulfiller of the law' and `bringer of the Kingdom' in the exegesis of the Sermon offered by Eduard Thurneysen and Dietrich Bonhoeffer in (...)

The Adventitious Origins of the Calvinist Moral Subject.Philip G. Ziegler - 2015 - Studies in Christian Ethics 28 (2):213-223.
This paper argues that Calvin provides an account of the radical unmaking of the human moral subject at the hands of sin and its even more radical remaking at the hands of divine grace. The moral significance of human continuity during this soteriological transit, including such things as reason and will as such, is shown to be overreached by that of what becomes of the human creature in its history at the hands of both sin and God’s grace. Calvin’s treatment (...)

Elemente einer Metaphysik der Immanenz.Robert Hugo Ziegler - 2017 - Bielefeld: transcript Verlag.

Ursula Ziegler - 2020 - Baden-Baden: Verlag Karl Alber.
Plato's concept of education raises the question of the conditions under which the epistemic quest and a change in the attitude of the soul actually correlate. The Platonic motifs of self-care and a good life, soul therapy and shame lead, as this study shows, to a self-reflective movement of knowledge, which has an orienting effect in view of the good and a mediating and ordering effect regarding the soul-body relationship. This work contours the dynamics of learning processes on specific, and (...)

Innovation, ethics and our common futures: a collaborative philosophy.Rafael Ziegler - 2020 - Northampton, MA: Edward Elgar Publishing.
The important yet contradictory role of innovation in society calls for a philosophy of innovation. Critically exploring innovation in relation to values, the economy and social change, Rafael Ziegler proposes a collaborative theory and practice of innovation that aims to liberate possibilities for our common futures. Following cues from the arts and drawing on the innovation literature across the social sciences, this book exposes pro-innovation bias and the gospel of disruptive change. Not only entrepreneurs but also civic networks and (...)

In this volume, Rabbi Aharon Lichtenstein explores the development of the religious personality. He advocates a life centered on the service of God, but recognizes multiple paths to this goal. Acknowledging that both the Jewish value system and human experience are multifaceted, he examines the relevant issues from an unusually wide perspective. Rabbi Lichtenstein's essays reflect not only a staunch commitment to Halakha and a firm grounding in rigorous Torah study, but also a deep spirituality, a profound moral sensitivity, and (...)

    Special relationships: six stories.John A. Ziegler - 2014 - [Charleston, SC?]: [John A. Ziegler?].
Since difficult ideas are best understood when they wear a human face, in these six stories the main characters personify several 'isms' the author has written and taught about during his academic career. These 'isms' include German-Americanism, idealism, positivism or realism, and experimentalism. Several 'special relationships' in the stories are based on the author's experiences over many years in the United Kingdom and in teaching the liberal arts."--Back cover.

Kritik des reaktionären Denkens.Robert Hugo Ziegler - 2023 - transcript Verlag.

Traditionally, conceptual thinking is explored via philosophical analysis or psychological experimentation. We seek to complement these mainstream approaches with the perspective of a first person exploration into pure thinking. To begin with, pure thinking is defined as a process and differentiated from its content, the concepts itself. Pure thinking is an active process and not a series of associative thought-events; we participate in it, we immerse ourselves within its active performance.
