The received view of Bergson's philosophy of life is that it advances some form of vitalism under the heading of an “élan vital.” This paper argues against the vitalistic interpretation of Bergson's élan vital as it appears in Creative Evolution in favor of an interpretation based on his overlooked reflections on entropy and energetics. Within the interpretation developed here, the élan vital is characterized not as a spiritualistic “vital force” but as a tendency of organization opposed (...) to the tendency of entropic degradation. It is then shown how Bergson's view of evolution and living organization resonates with more contemporary scientific approaches belonging to a “thermodynamic paradigm” in theoretical biology in different respects, including the critique of neo-Darwinism and the positing of a driving force behind evolution. Finally, the special interest that Bergson's philosophical biology bears today is considered in terms of the connection between the concepts of élan vital and duration. (shrink)

베르그송의 생명사상은 진화론에 대한 나름의 재해석과 종교적 지평의 형이상학적 사유가 잘 어우러져 일치와 종합을 이루고 있는 놀라운 사상이다. 베르그송의 생명에 대한 논의에서 생명의 본질은 물리화학적 차원을 넘어선 초월성을 갖고 있기 때문에 분석과학과 기술은 온전히 이해할 수 없다고 여겨진다. 그는 생명의 근원을 비물질적인 ‘생의 약동(élan vital)’으로 보았고, 생명이란 물질의 장벽을 넘어서는 의식의 자기실현으로 보았다. 모든 생물은 정도의 차이가 있는 의식을 가지고 있으며, 인간에게는 의식이 고도로 발달되어 있어 ‘자기의식’을 가질 수 있다. 그는 생명이 의식을 향해 진화하는 데 가장 중요한 열쇠를 환경적 (...) 조건이 아니라 스스로 미래를 창조하고 선택할 수 있는 ‘자유’라고 보았다. 그래서 그의 진화론을 ‘창조적 진화론’이라 부르는 것이다. 이러한 기본 전제 하에서 그는 기존의 진화론적 생명관을 완전히 새롭게 갱신하였는데, 이는 우리로 하여금 생명의 존엄성을 일깨워주고 있다. 반면 그의 ‘창조적 진화’에서 진화의 방향성에 결정적인 열쇠가 되는 자유란 거의 절대적인 인간의 선택의 자유를 의미하는 것이기에 반드시 낙관적인 것은 아니며, 또한 그가 스스로 공언한 크리스천의 도덕관과도 완전히 조응하지는 않는다. 이러한 의문점을 해결해주는 것이 그의 ‘사랑의 도약’에 관한 이론이다. 이 사랑의 도약에서 이루어지는 ‘생의 변모’가 인간으로 하여금 신비주의적 사랑을 가능하게 하며, 이를 통해 존재하는 모든 것을 동등한 사랑으로 사랑하게 되는 아가페적 사랑 혹은 신적인 사랑이 가능한 것이다. Mikhail Bakhtin’s 1926 essay, “Contemporary Vitalism,” includes Bergson alongside Driesch in a short list of “the most published representatives of vitalism in Western Europe,” and, indeed, Bakhtin’s critique of Driesch is intended to undermine what he calls the “conceptual framework” of “contemporary vitalism” as a whole (The crisis of modernism: Bergson and the vitalist controversy. Eds. Frederick Burwick and Paul Douglass. Cambridge University Press, New York, 1992, p 81). The conceptual framework that Driesch and Bergson are supposed to have shared (...) in common consists at bottom, for Bakhtin, in the ontological commitment to the autonomy of life, “its independence, its disconnectedness from physical-chemical phenomena” (81). This has long been understood as the defining mark of vitalism, at least in the mind of its critics: the contention that matter and the mechanical models that track it are insufficient to the reality of biological forms, and that the explanation of life therefore requires the postulation of a non-mechanical, possibly immaterial, uniquely vital principle, force, substance, or property. Recent scholarship has made considerable headway in complicating these pictures by attending to earlier and subtler forms of materialism, and by distinguishing between different types of vitalism and drawing out the heuristic or scientific utility of some of them (Wolfe, Eidos 14: 212–235, 2011, Antropol Exp 17(13): 215–224, 2017; cf. Wolfe and Normandin, Vitalism and the scientific image in post-enlightenment life science, 1800–2010. Springer, Dordrecht, 2013). The focus of some of this work has been on the critical revaluation of Driesch himself (Bognon et al., Kairos J Philos Sci 20(1): 113–140, 2018). Yet the status of Bergson’s commitment to the existence of a vital principle remains underdeveloped. In the midst of what some are calling a “Bergson renaissance,” I think that it calls for the same kind of critical reappraisal (Ansell-Pearson, Bergson: thinking beyond the human condition. Bloomsbury, New York, 2018: 1; cf. Lundy, Deleuze’s Bergsonism. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh, p 5, 2018). The aim of this paper is to attempt the outline of an answer to that call. I begin with a brief summary of Driesch’s vitalism, then I reconstruct Bergson’s underappreciated critique of internal finality, or what Kant called inner purposiveness, and locate in it a subterranean criticism of vital principles of the Drieschian variety as well. Two consequences follow: first, if Bergson is to be considered a vitalist, it cannot be in the Drieschian sense and we are therefore wrong to associate the two; and second, if Bergson is to be considered a vitalist, then his vitalism has to be understood—somewhat counterintuitively, and certainly contra Driesch—on the basis of a principle external to the ostensible individuality of biological forms. In this paper I argue that, for Nietzsche, the will to power is a kind of élan vital, i.e., vital impulse, force or drive. In living creatures, it is a drive to express their natures. In human beings, it is complex and must be developed in stages. The initial stages include becoming independent and striving for freedom of spirit and expression. Of the few that achieve the last stage, some will become the Übermensch or superior persons who will (...) achieve great creative acts and in so doing enhance the capabilities of all humans. Nietzsche spoke as if he were one of the free spirits, but implicit in his writings is the idea that he is an exemplar of the Übermensch. (shrink)

By referring to H. Bergson's theory about the evolutionary process, this article reflects on the antinomic character of the two fundamental tendencies of the vital movement, which are pure time and materiality. Starting from the importance of the image in this philosophy, it focuses on the Bergsonian ontology, questioning the notion of vital elan and how matter comes and the real-time is inscribed in it. By highlighting the ambiguity of the role played by materiality in the tensioning (...) of vital forces, the discussion explains that the original impulse establishes its antipode. Thus, it reveals the dramatic character that permeates the movement intrinsic to the history of life, in which effort and struggle are correlated to the limits of the impulse that moves it - and inevitable questions for the creative act that defines it. Industrial animal agriculture is a significant driver of climate change, habitat loss, and the ongoing extinction crisis, all of which will continue to accelerate as global demand for animal products grows. Plant-based alternatives to animal products, which have existed for over a thousand years, offer a potential solution to this problem, as the intersection of recent technological innovation and shifting capital investment trends have ushered in a new era of alternative proteins that are redefining food categories like meat, eggs, and (...) milk. To better understand these evolving food forms, their attendant technologies, and the opportunities they afford for ameliorating the impacts of industrial animal farming, this article provides a genealogy of plant-based alternative proteins, with a particular focus on the current era and the role that design principles like biomimicry and skeuomorphism play in reproducing the organoleptic properties (the sensorial, experiential aspects) of animal products. Comparing the alternative protein market to other markets in which more sustainable foods and energy have failed to displace their environmentally destructive counterparts, it concludes by considering if whether creating novel new protein forms, rather than imitating conventional animal products, may afford a more promising path toward transformation of the food system. What is Understanding? This is the first of a series of Chats with OpenAI’s ChatGPT (Chat). The main goal is to obtain Chat’s response to a series of questions about the concept of ’understand- ing’. The approach is a conversational approach where the author (labeled as user) asks (prompts) Chat, obtains a response, and then uses the response to formulate followup questions. David Deutsch’s assertion of the primality of the process / capability of understanding is used as the starting point. (...) Understanding is posited as a major step in the Big Picture description of emergence in the Universe. Understanding follows the emergence of Brains and Minds, culminating in Power Over the Universe. My evaluation suggests that Chat does indeed offer utility, but also has limitations manifested by overly general responses that do not focus tightly on the questions asked. Chat does yield some gems that could be easily missed. The approach used here includes creating Metaprompts, wherein Chat is asked to create more efficient prompts based on initial promptsThis approach appears to hold significant promise, and will likely be of benefit to those exploring various facets of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Large Language Models (LLMs) and designers of Advanced General Intelligence (AGI). Other findings include the need for creating new metrics and ways of discussing intelligence, and various adjacent areas and subprocesses associated with intelligence. O objetivo deste artigo é examinar a noção de ‘existência’ na crítica de Gassendi à prova ontológica cartesiana da Quinta Meditação, a fim de tentar avaliar que pressupostos lógicos e metafísicos estão implicados tanto na afirmação de Gassendi segundo a qual a existência não é uma perfeição, como em sua outra objeção adicional, na qual ele utiliza a lógica dos predicáveis para combater a tese cartesiana de que a existência é uma propriedade.

Aperfeiçoar a formação de professores de Química, por meio do desenvolvimento de projetos e ações que pudessem fortalecer o campo da prática, e conduzir o licenciando para o exercício reflexivo da relação entre teoria e prática profissional docente, utilizando, para isso, atividades diversas sobre o ensino e a aprendizagem escolar, entre outras didáticas e metodologias, imersos de forma continua, sistematizada, orientada e coordenada, foram os alvos do projeto da residência pedagógica em Química do curso de Licenciatura em Química da Universidade (...) Federal de Mato Grosso – Brasil, desenvolvido no período de agosto de 2018 a janeiro de 2020. Neste artigo, apresentamos e dicutimos essa experiência, com foco na transformação da noção de processo formativo, tanto para o licenciando, quanto para a instituição formadora, que se fundamentou na epistemologia da prática para transformar o conhecimento produzido através do estágio supervisionado. A realidade profissional gritou suas necessidades e estas puderam ser tratadas, discutidas, teorizadas, problematizadas a partir do programa da residência. Ao que tudo indica, o sucesso de uma formação inicial exitosa está no ambiente profissional e não necessariamente na universidade. (shrink)

Recently the Principia Cybernetica Project undertook a computer‐based collaborative effort to develop a unified system of philosophy. The philosophy and its implementation are explicitly based on evolutionary principles of variation and natural selection (VNS) and a fundamental type of emergence called MetaSystem Transition (MST) which increases the overall freedom and adaptivity of systems. MST, conceived and articulated by Turchin (1977), occurs when a control subsystem is replicated and integrated into a whole through a higher level VNS generated control subsystem. Turchin (...) also articulated the concept of “the will to immortality” which led to Heylighen's (1991) formulation of cybernetic immortality (CI) contingent on immortal meme systems, metarational consciousness, and limitless knowledge. A possible direction of future evolution is the emergence of further levels of organization realized in "superbeing/metabeings.” The precise configuration of these “beings” is still open; an aspect or totality of which may be viewed as "cybernetic immortality.” In this paper, I review aspects of memes and MST as the basis for cybernetic immortality, discuss the potential for further MetaSystem Transitions in humans and human culture (trans‐sapiens and trans‐culture) , generalized CI constructs and interactions between cybernetically immortal constructs. Finally, some reflections are offered concerning the role of CI constructs in future evolution and the evolution of the future. (shrink)

O problema da desigualdade se apresenta como um constante objeto de reflexão na filosofia de Rousseau, perpassando diversas de suas obras. Buscando analisar a relação entre a desigualdade social e a corrupção política no pensamento rousseauniano mediante a defesa da hipótese de que a desigualdade social se configura em um fenômeno responsável pelo advento da corrupção política, pretende-se, nesse artigo, primeiro: examinar as distinções entre a desigualdade natural e a desigualdade social, ou seja, demarcar suas especificidades e como Rousseau compreende (...) cada uma delas; segundo, avaliar como a desigualdade social pode produzir a corrupção política, isto é, entender porque a desigualdade de riquezas ao produzir o luxo pode consequentemente engendrar a corrupção política, e, terceiro, ambiciona-se demonstrar quais são as consequências mais drásticas da desigualdade social na república. Amiúde, verifica-se nesse pensamento a utilização de exemplos da vida política real com o intuito de formular uma crítica ao regime romano. O presente artigo tem como propósito central, por meio da investigação de um problema de gravidade incontestável: a corrupção política, examinar o republicanismo de Cícero mediante suas noções fundamentais. Assim, teremos (...) três objetivos: primeiro, compreender a concepção de República alicerçada na virtude, no interesse comum e na justiça; o segundo, avaliar as razões pelas quais a igualdade e a liberdade se inscrevem como suportes indispensáveis no referido regime político; e, o terceiro, analisar como Cícero define a corrupção política, a maneira como ela penetra na República e suas prováveis consequências. Resumo Ao encerrar a sua explicação concernente à noção de Lei, no capítulo VI do segundo livro do Contrato social, Jean-Jacques Rousseau apresenta algumas inquietações referentes à capacidade de uma população prematura elaborar um sistema de legislação. Tais inquietações conduzem o pensador genebrino a preconizar a necessidade de uma figura polêmica e excepcional, na engrenagem política republicana: o legislador. Considerando a excepcionalidade dessa figura, o presente artigo sustentará a hipótese de que, mais do que alguém hábil em formular um conjunto (...) de leis para um determinado povo, a função republicana primordial de um legislador é a de contribuir para engendrar um espírito público em cada cidadão pertencente à república. A hipótese aventada será defendida a partir de três objetivos: primeiro, examinar-se-ão as razões pelas quais Rousseau julga ser necessário um legislador na ordenação republicana; segundo, analisar-se-á por que a construção de um espírito público pelo legislador pode ser considerada uma função republicana; terceiro, perscrutar-se-ão quais são as condições necessárias para um povo receber uma boa legislação.In closing his explanation concerning the notion of law, in chapter VI of the second book of the Social contract, Jean-Jacques Rousseau has some concerns about the ability of a premature population to develop a legislation system. Such concerns lead the Genevan thinker to advocate the need for a controversial and exceptional personage in the republican political machinery: The legislator. Considering the exceptionality of this personage, this article will support the hypothesis that, more than being one skilled at presenting a set of laws to a particular people, the primary republican function assigned to the legislator is to contribute to engender a public spirit in every citizen belonging to the republic. The hypothesis presented will be defended from three objectives: first, I shall examine the reasons why Rousseau deems it necessary to have a legislator in the republican order; Second, I shall analyze why the construction of a public spirit by the legislator may be considered a republican function; third, I shall look into the conditions necessary for a people to receive a good legislation. O republicanismo é constituído de diversas matrizes, entre elas a matriz inglesa e a matriz francesa às quais vinculam-se os pensadores modernos Algernon Sidney e Jean-Jacques Rousseau respectivamente. Buscando uma provável relação teórica entre o autor inglês e o pensador de Genebra quanto à tradição republicana, o presente artigo promoverá um exame e quiçá uma reflexão acerca do “espírito republicano” em Sidney e Rousseau assinalando as possíveis afinidades e divergências entre eles, embora sejam vinculações a diferentes matrizes. Para tanto, indaga-se: (...) é possível constatar alguma relação teórica entre esses dois pensadores? Preliminarmente, julgamos que seja possível, sim, realizar tal constatação a partir de uma análise do “espírito republicano” presente sob as penas desses pensadores. (shrink)

In her book Specifications Grading, Linda B. Nilson advocates for a grading regimen she claims will save faculty time, increase student motivation, and improve the quality and rigor of student work. If she is right, there is a strong case for many faculty to adopt some version of the system she recommends. In this paper, we argue that she is mostly right and recommend that faculty move away from traditional grading. We begin by rehearsing the central features of specifications grading (...) and providing two examples of how to implement it in philosophy classes. In light of the examples, we argue that specifications grading fulfills two of Nilson’s central desiderata but not the third. Since specifications grading generates two benefits that when combined increase student learning, without adding or increasing burdens, we conclude that student learning increases when courses are revised to include aspects of specifications grading. This book develops Non-Identity Theodicy as an original response to the problem of evil. It constructs an ethical framework for theodicy by sketching four cases of human action where horrendous evils are either caused, permitted, or risked, either for pure benefit or for harm avoidance.

This book proposes a new reading of Bergsonism based on the admission that time, conceived as duration, stretches instead of passes. This swelling time is full and so excludes the negative. Yet, swelling requires some resistance, but such that it is more of a stimulant than a contrariety. The notion of élan vital fulfills this requirement: it states the immanence of life to matter, thereby deriving the swelling from an internal effort and allowing its conceptualization as self-overcoming. With self-overcoming (...) as the inner dynamics of reality, Bergson dismisses all forms of dualism and reductionist monism because both the absence of negativity and the swelling nature of time posit a creative process yielding a qualitatively diverse world. This graded oneness is how the lower level activates intensification by turning into limitation, making possible higher levels of achievement, in particular through the union of mind and body and the integration of openness and closed sociability. Depois de estabelecer as características do corpo político ou soberano e destacar a função excepcional do legislador no Livro segundo do Contrato social, e no livro seguinte analisada a incumbência do governo na ordem política, Rousseau, no livro quarto da obra referida, se mobiliza para demonstrar a importância fundamental de algumas instituições para a manutenção dos valores republicanos. Entre as diversas instituições apresentadas pelo filósofo genebrino que visam cumprir esses objetivos, o presente artigo se concentra no exame de três delas: (...) o tribunato, a ditadura e a censura - instituições claramente inspiradas nas instituições romanas no período da Roma republicana. Em vista disso, indagamos: em que consiste o tribunato, a ditadura e a censura no arcabouço teórico de Rousseau? Quais são suas características? Como elas podem contribuir para a conservação da República? Partindo dessas indagações, pretende-se investigar as definições das três instituições elencadas bem como suas particularidades e a maneira como elas operam e podem contribuir para a preservação da República em longo prazo. I develop a theodicy (Non-Identity Theodicy) that begins with the recognition that we owe our existence to great and varied evils. I develop two versions of this theodicy, with the result that some version is available to the theist regardless of her assumptions about the existence and nature of free will. My defense of Non-Identity Theodicy is aided by an analogy between divine creation and human procreation. I argue that if one af rms the morality of vol- untary human procreation, (...) one should af rm the morality of divine creation; conversely, deny- ing the morality of divine creation commits one to denying the morality of human procreation. This paper intends to verify the extent and effectiveness of the transforming appropriation of the Derridean concept of ‘differance’ by Stiegler with respect to the problems that, according to Stiegler, make this creative critical operation necessary; in particular with respect to the most recent question concerning the possibility of thinking about and putting into practice a ‘neganthropological différance’ capable of facing the ecological crisis that today seems to threaten the very existence of life on earth. The paper goes back to (...) Technics and Time 1. to analyze the distinction between ‘vital difference’ and ‘noetic difference’ that constitutes the condition of possibility of the ‘neganthropological différance.’ In this perspective, the distinction proposed by Stiegler seems to re-propose the hierarchically oriented oppositional structure that characterizes metaphysical thought and in particular the opposition between man and animal, attributing to the human being the ability to free himself from the constraints of his biological-natural condition. Finally, the paper attempts to account for the repercussions of this approach on the very possibility of an effective response to the ecological crisis, concluding with a provocation regarding the role that theory can and must play with regard to such an urgent and far-reaching problem. Há duzentos anos (1823) triunfou a contrarrevolução da _Vila-Francada_, pondo fim à primeira experiência constitucional moderna em Portugal. De imediato, D. João VI determinou a revogação da Constituição de 1822, assim como das reformas adotadas para apagar a memória do regime constitucional anterior. Em simultâneo, a partir de uma iniciativa espontânea da Câmara da vila de Sernancelhe, formou-se um movimento municipal para anulação das próprias eleições às Cortes vintistas e revogação das procurações outorgadas aos deputados. Este artigo versa sobre ambas (...) as iniciativas, régia e municipal, considerando sobretudo que a anulação municipal das eleições vintistas é muito pouco conhecida e está praticamente por estudar na historiografia sobre a contrarrevolução. Examines the relationship of Derrida’s writings on architecture to his methodology of deconstruction and to deconstrutivism in architecture. Between 1984 and 1994 Jacques Derrida wrote and spoke a great deal about architecture both in his academic work and in connection with a number of particular building projects around the world. He engaged significantly with the work of architects such as Bernard Tschumi, Peter Eisenman, and Daniel Libeskind. Derrida conceived of architecture as an example of the kind of multidimensional writing that (...) he had theorized in Of Grammatology, identifying a rich common ground between architecture and philosophy in relation to ideas about political community and the concept of dwelling. In this book, Francesco Vitale analyzes Derrida’s writings and demonstrates how Derrida’s work on this topic provides a richer understanding of his approach to deconstruction, highlighting the connections and differences between philosophical deconstruction and architectural deconstrutivism. “Although there has been some discussion of the intersection of deconstruction and architecture in the past, mostly among architects and architectural critics, Vitale’s work is distinguished by the fact that it is written by a true philosopher who has a much more acute sense than has usually been the case of the philosophical underpinnings of Derrida’s exchanges with Tschumi, Eisenman, and others. Esse artigo traz uma discussão sobre a educação emancipatória a partir dos textos tardios de Adorno e Horkheimer . Eles revelam um significativo olhar sobre realidade e uma valiosa contribuição para o tema da emancipação vinculado à teoria crítica da sociedade, além de uma importante reflexão sobre a educação crítica e emancipatória. Nessa perspectiva, são enfocados textos da última fase de Adorno e Horkheimer que mantêm uma vinculação com o projeto emancipatório da teoria crítica, sobressaindo os temas da formação cultural, (...) da educação crítica, do progresso, da teologia como categorias crítico-emancipatórias. Percebe-se, dessa forma, um insistente interesse pela emancipação, como se vislumbra pela noção de teologia defendida por Horkheimer em seu trabalho A Nostalgia do Totalmente Outro , em que ele a compreende como sendo a recusa de que o mal prevaleça na história humana. Ou ainda, pela concepção de educação em Adorno, cuja tese é que a educação tem como primeira tarefa fazer com que Auschwitz não se repita; ou também pelo chamamento a uma educação para a sensibilidade. Em função disso, a discussão aqui proposta tem como pano de fundo a compreensão de progresso e de teologia. Em relação à primeira, é feita uma crítica à concepção de progresso como pura evolução técnica, na linha da razão instrumental, em detrimento da humanidade, segundo compreende Adorno. A categoria de progresso, nesses termos, encontra ressonância também no pensamento de Horkheimer desenvolvido em Eclipse da Razão e em A Nostalgia do Totalmente Outro como justificativa teológica que pretende rechaçar a prevalência do mal na história humana. A proposta educacional emancipatória se radica no enfrentamento dos impasses postos pelo mundo administrado, fechado a mudanças, cujos fins já estão previamente configurados, enquanto projeto político que se sobrepõe aos valores da humanidade. A insustentável situação de alienação e opressão que marca a história de considerável parcela da humanidade reivindica soluções e indaga as razões dessa humanidade que viu surgir o projeto de emancipação da razão ter se fixado nesses impasses. Isso implica uma ética da indignação redentora que comporta tanto a crítica do mundo administrado quanto a afirmação da humanidade e da razão emancipatória. Visando a uma educação emancipatória como desfecho da discussão em torno de uma relação entre a teoria crítica e o projeto de emancipação, desenvolvo diversos aspectos que compõem o conjunto da reflexão da teoria crítica. Assim, a partir das categorias de progresso, teologia, formação cultural e educação crítica, busco os elementos que sustentam o projeto de emancipação no todo da teoria crítica, emblematicamente reunidos no tema da educação emancipatória.
