The first studies in Philosophy that studied digital technology did not specify the characteristics of its various technical applications or instruments. They looked at the virtual reality and used the metaphor of immersion to study the set of all technological developments, as had been done before with the novel. Thus, Internet is misunderstood by many experts as virtuality (next to Baudrillard), rather than linking its hypertext system closer to other theories like those proposed by Deleuze and Guattari or Bourriaud.

A partir del contrapeso que Ortega encuentra en la contradictoria vida de Goethe, se atreve con una nueva definición para la biografía como interrelación de tres elementos que se enfrentan: circunstancia, vocación y azar. La autonomía del arte es un punto de partida común para forjar una significación para el arte de vanguardias. Con ella, los manifiestos y estudios críticos apuntan lecturas epistemológicas y sociales, que parten necesariamente de una reflexión desde la ontología, sobre la naturaleza de ese arte. Pero Ortega se queda sólo en lo ontológico para hacer del arte una entidad de naturaleza radicalmente distinta a la realidad del espectador. Porque lo que pretende es hacer orbitar también el arte -con las (...) vanguardias (desde la autoconciencia de autónomas que él les supone)- en torno al eje de su filosofía, como mecanismo de evasión de la realidad radical que es para cada individuo su propia vida. El objetivo de este trabajo es proporcionar razones a favor de la teoría jurídica computacional como una nueva área de la teoría jurídica contemporánea. El trabajo inicia con una breve panorámica de la historia de la inteligencia artificial con el fin de contar con una estantería que permita ubicar los distintos acercamientos que pueden darse en el terreno de la inteligencia artificial aplicada al derecho (IAD): los correspondientes al enfoque top-down y al bottom-up. Después de una enunciación de los temas (...) de interés por parte de la comunidad internacional de IAD se exponen algunos desarrollos con referencia especial a los realizados en el Laboratorio de Constructivismo Jurídica del Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas de la Universidad NacionalAutónoma de México en los que se resalta el papel de la teoría jurídica computacional: los proyectos EXPERTIUS I, EXPERTIUS II y el Sistema inteligente para la configuración y visualización del derecho globalizado como una red adaptativa compleja emergente. My aim in this comment is to provide reasons that highlight the importance of the Spanish translation of Brian Bix’s book: “Jurisprudence, Theory and Context”. My comment stems from the sociology of knowledge and takes as a point of departure an empirical study about the state of the art of legal philosophy in Mexican Law Schools. My conclusion is that Brian Bix’s work shows how Mexican legal philosophy might be incorporated into current jurisprudential debate.Resumen: El objetivo de este comentario es (...) proporcionar algunas razones a favor de la importancia de la publicación de la traducción al español del libro de Brian Bix “Jurisprudence, Theory and Context” para la actualización de la filosofía del derecho en México. Mi comentario es realizado desde la perspectiva de la sociología del conocimiento y tiene como punto de partida un estudio empírico sobre el estado del arte de la filosofía del derecho en las facultades de derecho del país. Mi conclusión es que el trabajo de Brian Bix responde la pregunta fundamental: ¿cómo incorporar a la filosofía del derecho mexicana al contexto global?, que estudiantes, profesores y jóvenes investigadores se plantean actualmente. In this paper I argue against the thesis defended by Michael Giudice, who claims that it is possible to provide a concept of law by determining the necessary conditions of its essence. My main thesis is: 1) that this goal can exclusively be reached with certain kind of concepts: those satisfying what I propose to call:“Golden Standard of Concepts with Necessary Conditions” and 2) that the concept of “Law” is not such a concept. Ortega presenta su metafísica como un sistema de imágenes alrededor de la novela como metáfora de la vida. Pero confunde el sujeto y el objeto referenciales en su explicación de la vida como acción, porque previamente no ha trabajado lo suficiente en su estética el personaje. Zambrano, en cambio, sí tiene una reflexión propia del personaje que le permite moverse mejor en la analogía, verle más aspectos. Por ejemplo, el envés desde la ética de la condición de proyectivo del hombre (...) : para Zambrano una actitud reprobable como comportamiento buscado, el sacrificio de la vida a un esquema preconcebido reductor. Este artículo propone reunir a la literatura y la filosofía en un mecanismo didáctico para estimular la práctica de la filosofía con la lectura y la escritura de relatos, con los postulados del constructivismo, en torno a hacer filosofía, no solo observarla desde fuera. Parte de dos premisas: 1) el cuento moderno funciona como pregunta filosófica, como presentador de los grandes temas filosóficos, pero 2) evita la tentación de una explicación explícita, que queda elidida, para que sea el lector quien (...) acabe dándole una forma definitiva con su interpretación, participando en la construcción de su significado. Ortega, aunque comprime su metafísica hasta formularla con su “Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia”, no escribe apenas de esa circunstancia: de su condición y posibles aspectos. Del binomio con que explica la vida trabaja solo en la reacción del individuo, convertida su propuesta metafísica en una ética que confía en las fuerzas del sujeto para desarrollar su proyecto vital en cualquier entorno. Aún es de día, que publica Miguel Delibes en 1949, con la España de posguerra de fondo, puede (...) leerse como una réplica a esta ética que Ortega llama de la ilusión: Su protagonista, ante una circunstancia abiertamente hostil, es incapaz de desarrollar el programa que quiere para su vida. La trama funciona como planteamiento de una ética que recalcula las posibilidades del individuo para realizarse en un entorno adverso. (shrink)

Tracing a central theme of Plato's Republic , G. R. F. Ferrari reconsiders in this study the nature and purpose of the comparison between the structure of society and that of the individual soul. In four chapters, Ferrari examines the personalities and social status of the brothers Glaucon and Adeimantus, Plato's notion of justice, coherence in Plato's description of the decline of states, and the tyrant and the philosopher king—a pair who, in their different ways, break with the (...) terms of the city-soul analogy. In addition to acknowledging familiar themes in the interpretation of the Republic —the sincerity of its utopianism, the justice of the philosopher's return to the Cave—Ferrari provocatively engages secondary literature by Leo Strauss, Bernard Williams, and Jonathan Lear. With admirable clarity and insight, Ferrari conveys the relation between the city and the soul and the choice between tyranny and philosophy. In this paper I try to defend McDowell’s empiricism from a certain objection made by Davidson, Stroud and Glüer. The objection states that experiences cannot be reasons because they are—as McDowell conceives them—inert. I argue that, even though there is something correct in the objection, that is not sufficient for rejecting the epistemological character that McDowell attributes to experiences. My strategy consists basically in showing that experiences involve a constitutive attitude of acceptance of their contents.

This study examines the role of wisdom in the cross-cultural adaptation of Chinese visiting scholars in Canada, as mediated by different coping styles. Path analysis was used to for hypotheses testing. The findings suggest that wisdom measured by 3D-WS and Adult Self-Transcendence Inventory, independently had direct correlation with social and psychological adaptation, and positively associated with engaged coping ; the independent effects of 3D-WS and ASTI on social adaptation, psychological adaptation, and life satisfaction were mediated by proactive–reflective coping; wisdom, when (...) measured by 3D-WS, promoted positive psychological adaptation through decreasing passive coping. This study shows that wisdom is a critical factor affecting cross-cultural adaptation, and the use of proactive–reflective coping is a wise way of handling future life challenges. (shrink)

El mapa y por ende la cartografía, en cuanto que sistema mediante el cual el mapa se desarrolla, no es desde nuestro punto de vista un objeto neutro, una herramienta que ayuda a la comprensión del mundo a través de una serie de abstracciones como argumentaría una geografía empirista. Tampoco creemos que se trate exclusivamente de un producto nacido en un espacio y en una época determinada que refleja la ideología del momento y que se constituye en un eje articulador (...) del poder como postula por otro lado la geografía radical. El mapa, desde nuestra línea de investigación, es ante todo un texto que junto a otros se constituyen en herramienta indispensable para modelizar el espacio desde donde es observado, es decir el mundo y por consiguiente lo que entendemos por realidad. This note examines Fulvio Tessitore’s objections formulated in his critical review of Massimo Ferrari’s paper Non solo sentieri interrotti . According to the author, Tessitore has misunderstood his interpretation of historicism, as well as his interpretation of the German philosophy within the Italian philosophical culture after the Second World War. Moreover, Tessitore suggests that the author’s position is the consequence of a sort of prejudice towards the history of philosophy practised in Napoli. The author shows the incorrectness of this (...) opinion, trying to sketch another view of this philosophical enterprise beyond any geographic boundary and local patriotism. (shrink)

De tal manera, el derecho se revela como un medio de acción social dirigido a lograr los proyectos de seres humanos empeñados en relaciones variables de cooperación y de lucha. David Eso and Kay Burns edition of philosopher Leo Ferraris previously unpublished 1973 manuscript brings to light a long forgotten satirical work, which, in an age of fake news, possesses renewed relevance. The editors contextualize The Earth is Flat! for the reader with a scholarly introduction and a humorous Forewarning. Author, Leo Ferrari, draws on his extensive knowledge of classical thought and its key figures to present a history of ideas that is sometimes accurate, sometimes speculative. Speculative or alternative (...) aspects of this history support his Flat Earth theme, as do a number of scientific experiments outlined, which the reader is encouraged to try. He traces the conflict between Globularist and Planoterrestrial beliefs from antiquity to his contemporary moment of the early 1970s, marked by space exploration. Later chapters chart the activities and philosophies of the Flat Earth Society of Canada, including Ferraris experience on the lecture circuit and in media platforms. The authors method is to blur the line between seriousness and humour and to show that intellectual work can also be good fun. He uses the idea of a spinning, spherical planet to symbolically represent the alienating effects of technological modernity. (shrink)

Esta investigación pretende aportar novedades sobre la filosofía de la educación a partir de la antropología trascendental desarrollada por Polo. Se usa un camino descendente: desde el carácter personal del hombre hasta las manifestaciones esenciales. Se parte del carácter filial y se advierte la crisis de autoridad provocada en la educación por su rechazo. Se delinea un orden educativo de acuerdo con el carácter sistémico y perfectivo de la esencia humana desde la radicalidad de la persona. Finalmente se presenta la (...) explicación poliana de la sindéresis como modelo para el educador. One of the most intriguing and painful anomalies of the modern world—so diffused that it has almost become a universal culture— is the incredible number of individuals and groups who kill, torture, burn, kidnap, imprison or merely outrage other people with a clear conscience when a political motive may be alleged. Added to them is the much larger number of people and institutions that tolerate, approve, encourage, praise and even bless that type of behavior when it occurs within a political (...) context. Included in this generic political violence is „the kind of behavior that is much more serious and that we may call terrorist, the behavior of those who seek to impose their will through the commission of atrocities that sow a generalized terror or a panic fear, and then to manipulate the reactions these atrocities provoke. Here “private” terrorists, as well as “semi-state” and “state” terrorists commit acts that would not be tolerated in normal, non-political life, and the public that approves this conduct would never accept it if it occurred in everyday life. Primero, explicita el enamoramiento, la resolución y la idea efectiva de sí y de Dios como los aspectos esenciales del concepto de matrimonio. Luego reconstruye y articula la significación estética, ética y religiosa inherentes a un matrimonio genuino. Finalmente, a partir de las categorías de testimonio y trascendencia, elucida el sentido sagrado del matrimonio como un (...) experimentarse los cónyuges referidos a lo absoluto por medio de la interpelación a realizar absoluta e incondicionalmente el amor que los une. This paper analyzes the concept of alterity in the thought of Emmanuel Levinas and its importance to make a critic of the ethical ones of dialogical inspiration. As opposed to the conception of the intersubjective relations founded on in a previous community, the alterity concept shows the necessity to think the sense to us of the ethics from the other.

The generation of the pitch control signal in a wind turbine (WT) is not straightforward due to the nonlinear dynamics of the system and the coupling of its internal variables; in addition, they are subjected to the uncertainty that comes from the random nature of the wind. Fuzzy logic has proved useful in applications with changing system parameters or where uncertainty is relevant as in this one, but the tuning of the fuzzy logic controller (FLC) parameters is neither straightforward nor (...) an easy task. On the other hand, reinforcement learning (RL) allows systems to automatically learn, and this capability can be exploited to tune the FLC. In this work, a WT pitch control architecture that uses RL to tune the membership functions and scale the output of a fuzzy controller is proposed. The RL strategy calculates the fuzzy controller gains in order to reduce the output power error of the WT according to the wind speed. Different reward mechanisms based on the output power error have been considered. Simulation results with different wind profiles show that this architecture performs better (123.7 W) in terms of power errors than an FLC without RL (133.2 W) or a simpler PID (208.8 W). Even more, it provides a smooth response and outperforms other hybrid controllers such as RL-PID and radial basis function neural network control. (shrink)

Abstract In his paper “The Opposite of Human Enhancement: Nanotechnology and the Blind Chicken problem” ( Nanoethics 2: 305-36, 2008) Thompson argued that technological attempts to reduce or eliminate selected non-human animals’ capabilities (animal disenhancements) in order to solve or mitigate animal welfare problems in animals’ use pose a philosophical conundrum, because there is a contradiction between rational arguments in favor of these technological interventions and intuitions against them. In her response “Animal Disenhancement and the Non-Identity Problem: A Response to (...) Thompson” ( Nanoethics 5:43–48, 2011), Palmer maintained that the philosophical conundrum is even deeper if we introduce the non-identity problem into the discussion. In my brief response, I claim that in order to avoid the pitfalls of speculative ethics, empirical facts related to the technologies involved as well as costs for the non-human animals have to be taken into account. Depending on which changes we are referring to, ethical problems can be seen very differently. Widening the consideration to the socio-economic context in which non-human animals are currently used by humans, I challenge the idea of genuine philosophical conundrums from an antispeciesist and abolitionist perspective. Only in a context of exploitation, in which non-human animals are deprived of basic rights and their existence is totally dependent on human exploitation, the contradictions between improvement of welfare and disenhancement of capabilities make sense.
