Cancers rely on multiple, heterogeneous processes at different scales, pertaining to many biomedical fields. Therefore, understanding cancer is necessarily an interdisciplinary task that requires placing specialised experimental and clinical research into a broader conceptual, theoretical, and methodological framework. Without such a framework, oncology will collect piecemeal results, with scant dialogue between the different scientific communities studying cancer. We argue that one important way forward in service of a more successful dialogue is through greater integration of applied sciences (experimental and clinical) (...) with conceptual and theoretical approaches, informed by philosophical methods. By way of illustration, we explore six central themes: (i) the role of mutations in cancer; (ii) the clonal evolution of cancer cells; (iii) the relationship between cancer and multicellularity; (iv) the tumour microenvironment; (v) the immune system; and (vi) stem cells. In each case, we examine open questions in the scientific literature through a philosophical methodology and show the benefit of such a synergy for the scientific and medical understanding of cancer. This volume of Bertrand Russell's Collected Papers finds Russell focused on writing Principia Mathematica during 1905–08. Eight previously unpublished papers shed light on his different versions of a substitutional theory of logic, with its elimination of classes and relations, during 1905-06. A recurring issue for him was whether a type hierarchy had to be part of a substitutional theory. In mid-1907 he began writing up the final version of Principia , now using a ramified theory of types, and eleven (...) unpublished drafts from 1907-08 deal with this. Numerous letters show his thoughts on the process. The volume's 80-page introduction covers the evolution of his logic from 1896 until 1909, when volume I of Principia went to the printer. (shrink)

The Collected Papers 28 signals reinvigoration of Russell the public campaigner. The title of the volume is taken from one of his most famous and eloquent short essays and probably the best known of his many broadcasts for the BBC. Man's Peril, 1954-55 not only captures the essence of Russell's thinking about nuclear weapons and the Cold War in the mid-1950s, its extraordinary impact served to jolt him into political protest once again. The activism of which we glimpse the initial (...) stirrings in this volume continued in various guises more or less without interruption until his death. In the writings assembled in this volume, however, he is looking towards the non-aligned states and world scientific opinion as possible brokers of détente . (The volume includes Russell's famous public statement, the declaration of scientists known as 'The Russell Einstein Manifesto'.) Although Russell was becoming increasingly immersed in work for peace, this was not to the exclusion of all other interests. For example, here we find also him reminiscing about his peace campaigning during the First World War, defending 'History as an Art', and attacking the obscurantism of obscenity legislation and the opponents of birth control. During the First World War, Bertrand Russell was political commentator for The Tribunal , the official weekly publication of the No-Conscription Fellowship, of which Russell was Action Chairman. Un mouvement d'exterminisme généralisé se fait jour, qui instrumentalise et institutionnalise les catastrophes naturelles, et qui organise l'utilisation et la consommation intégrale des forces de travail, la mise à mort de populations (...) entières. The years 1909-1913 were among the most productive, philosophically speaking, of Bertrand Russell's entire career. In addition to the papers reprinted in this volume, he brought Principia Mathematica to its finished form and wrote The Problems of Philosophy, Theory of Knowledge and Our Knowledge of the External World . In October 1910, Russell began teaching at Cambridge, having accepted an appointment as lecturer in logic and the principles of mathematics at Trinity College for a term of five years. We propose a new derivation of Wigner's function based on the property of positivity of its integrals along straight lines in phase space. Identifying the values of these marginalizations with densities pertaining to invariant observables, we are able to reconstruct Wigner's pseudo-distribution from its slices.

Tout en s’inscrivant dans une théorie des droits des animaux « abolitionniste », cet article entend montrer que, sous réserve du respect de certaines conditions, il n’est pas nécessairement condamnable sur le (...) plan moral d’autoriser la perpétuation des animaux domestiques – en particulier des animaux de compagnie. Ainsi, je tenterai de montrer que s’il est vrai, toutes choses égales par ailleurs, qu’il est moralement acceptable de mettre au monde des enfants sur la base d’un désir égoïste, alors il l’est aussi de laisser venir au monde des animaux de compagnie pour une raison semblable. Le fait d’avoir un enfant ou un animal de compagnie ne mobilisent pas nécessairement les mêmes enjeux éthiques. Je ferai valoir que malgré certaines contraintes, la vie des animaux de compagnie peut tout à fait être enviable. Enfin, j’indiquerai en quoi le premier argument fournit des pistes pour penser le statut légal des animaux de compagnie. | : Because of the injustices domestic animals suffer today, some animal rights theorists claim that the relationship between humans and domestic animals is intrinsically unjust, and that therefore we should not allow domestic animals to breed. I try to show in this paper that, provided that some specific conditions are respected, it is possible to allow the perpetuation of domestic animals—especially pets—while being consistent with an “abolitionist” animal rights theory. Thus, I will try to show that if, all other things being equal, it is morally acceptable to have a child based on a selfish desire, then it is morally acceptable to have a pet for the same reason. Having a child does not lead to the same ethical issues as having a pet. I will show that, despite some constraints, a pet’s life can be perfectly enjoyable. Twisting definitions of a concept to serve one's purposes is rarely a fruitful exercise and the demonstration of culture is, necessarily, a two-step procedure: (1) documenting a behavioral difference between populations, (2) demonstrating that this difference has spread through the group by means of social learning. This will avoid putting the cart before the horse.

Dans un précédent ouvrage, La liberté, la pensée et la mort chez Platon et Montaigne, il a été montré que, chez Platon comme chez Montaigne, la mort, loin d'être le plus terrible des maux, est en fait une libération, car elle rend possible un détachement d'avec la vie qui leur est apparue soit contaminée par des fictions, soit cruellement angoissante. Les mêmes thèmes sont repris dans cet ouvrage avec Spinoza et Freud, mais dans un contexte déterministe qui les empêche de (...) croire encore à la possibilité d'une pensée humaine inconditionnée. La philosophie ne suffit plus à apprendre à mourir. Sans une analyse des causes qui déterminent l'activité mentale, à savoir le désir et les pulsions animiques, la pensée demeure asservie à des finalités imaginaires. Il s'ensuit que, pour philosopher, il faut d'abord renoncer au fantasme du sujet libre ou du moi maître de lui-même. Ce sont ces personnages qui doivent mourir pour penser et exister librement. En ce sens, la mort apparaît, ici aussi, comme une délivrance qui devient, de ce fait, désirable. (shrink)

Une telle mise en forme élimine forcément un chaos, une indétermination ou un flou constitutifs de la réalité. La vulgarité est omniprésente aujourd'hui. Elle s'exprime dans les manières, le langage, l'accoutrement, les arts ; on la rencontre dans la foule comme dans les élites, et jusqu'au sommet de l'Etat ; elle prolifère dans la publicité, les médias, sur Internet et les réseaux sociaux. Qui plus est, elle s'affiche sans vergogne, elle est assumée, souvent agressive même. Cependant, malgré son essor et son aggravation, malgré les désagréments qu'elle engendre, la vulgarité n'a jamais fait l'objet d'un examen systématique. Pour saisir au mieux son sens, l'ouvrage enquête sur les critiques très vives que la vulgarité suscite depuis deux siècles et les remèdes qui furent mis en oeuvre, en vain, pour la prévenir. Il part à la recherche d'un nouvel antidote en remontant aux sources qui la rendent possible et autorisent, voire encouragent son déploiement. La vulgarité est le fruit d'une modernité intempérante et sa propagation reflète les errements de la postmodernité. L'examen des principes fondateurs de l'Occident contemporain met au jour les ressorts profonds du phénomène et suggère la voie à suivre pour nous prémunir contre lui. In this article, we build on the stakeholder-politics literature to investigate how corporate scandals transform political contexts and give impetus to the contentious movements of fringe stakeholders against multinational corporations (MNCs). Based on Adut’s scandal theory, we flesh out three scandal-related processes that directly affect political-opportunity structures (POSs) and the generation of social movements against MNCs: convergence of contention toward a single target, publicization of deviant practices, and contagion to other organizations. These processes reduce the obstacles to collective actions by (...) fringe stakeholders by pushing corporate elites to be more sensitive to their claims, by decreasing MNCs’ capability to repress contentious movements, by forcing the targeted MNCs to formalize a policy to monitor and eradicate the controversial practices, and by helping fringe stakeholders find internal and external allies to support their claims. This conceptual model of scandals as catalysts of contentious actions contributes to a better understanding of stakeholder politics by unveiling the role of the political context in the coordination of fringe stakeholders. Après avoir rappelé les catégories qui dans la Science de la logique et la Philosophie de la nature aident à penser de façon hégélienne la notion de matière , nous indiquons ici à quel point Hegel peut sembler un précurseur de la science du XXe siècle. Est alors analysé en quoi ce genre d’affirmation peut être soutenu mais aussi relativisé. Il apparaît en tout cas que la position de Hegel par rapport à la matière n’est, à bien des égards, pas (...) plus « idéaliste » que la position des physiciens d’aujourd’hui. La matière est pensée par le philosophe allemand comme la trace passagère du processus infini de la réalité – processus qui ne saura s’épuiser dans les diverses constructions des sciences positives.Having considered the categories which, in Science of Logic and Philosophy of Nature, enable us to adopt a Hegelian approach to considering the notion of matter , we here indicate the extent to which Hegel can be considered a forerunner of 20th century science. We then analyse how this type of assertion can be defended but also relativised. It would in any case seem that Hegel’s approach to « matter » is in many respects no more « idealistic » than that adopted by physicists today. Matter is considered by the German philosopher to be a fleeting trace of the infinite process of reality – a process which can never be exhausted in the various constructions of the positive sciences. As part of the special issue on “The United Nations at Seventy-Five: Looking Back to Look Forward,” this essay looks at the UN's human rights efforts through the lens of the ethics of survival, normative ethics, the ethics of protection, institutional ethics, and the ethics of the human predicament in the face of the Sustainable Development Goals. The essay finds that while the consecration of the right to life has made a contribution to the ethics of human survival, the overall (...) impact of the human rights program has been marginal. Normative ethics shows the UN performing magisterially in drafting and adopting a body of international norms for the universal protection of human rights. However, when it comes to the ethics of protection, the UN performs poorly because of the numerous oppressive governments that control the world body. On the ethics of the human predicament, this essay finds that SDG 16, which is devoted to development, peace, justice, and strong institutions, has so far had little practical impact. Gross violations of human rights continue to take place in numerous parts of the world. (shrink)
