Biological phenomena can be investigated at multiple levels, from the molecular to the cellular to the organismic to the ecological. In typical biology instruction, these levels have been segregated. Yet, it is by examining the connections between such levels that many phenomena in biology, and complex systems in general, are best explained. We describe a computation-based approach that enables students to investigate the connections between different biological levels. Using agent-based, embodied modeling tools, students model the microrules underlying a biological phenomenon (...) and observe the resultant aggregate dynamics. We describe 2 cases in which this approach was used. In both cases, students framed hypotheses, constructed multiagent models that incorporate these hypotheses, and tested these by running their models and observing the outcomes. Contrasting these cases against traditionally used, classical equation-based approaches, we argue that the embodied modeling approach connects more directly to students’ experience, enables extended investigations as well as deeper understanding, and enables “advanced” topics to be productively introduced into the high school curriculum. A story understander needs a great deal of knowledge about people's goals. This knowledge is needed to infer explanations for the behavior of the characters in a story. Sometimes a character's behavior cannot be explained in terms of a particular goal, but only in relation to a set of recurring goals that a character anticipates having.The concept of goal subsumption is introduced to deal with these situations. Goal subsumption is a way of planning for many goals at the same time. (...) It occurs in three different types of story situations, each of which has its own rules for recognition and understanding. This paper is concerned with those elements of planning knowledge that are common to both understanding someone else's plan and creating a plan for one's own use. This planning knowledge can be divided into two bodies: Knowledge about the world, and knowledge about the planning process itself. Our interest here is primarily with the latter corpus. The central thesis is that much of the knowledge about the planning process itself can be formulated in terms of higher‐level goals and plans called (...) meta‐goals and meta‐plans. These entities can then be used by the same understanding and planning mechanisms that process ordinary goals and plans. However, the meta‐planning knowledge now enables these mechanisms to handle much more complicated situations in a uniform manner.Systems based on meta‐planning would have a number of advantages over existing problem solving and understanding systems. The same knowledge could be shared by both a planner and understander, and both would be able to handle complex situations elegantly. In addition, in planning, the use of meta‐planning has several advantages over more traditional methods involving constraints or critics. Meta‐planning allows the full power of a problem solver to be applied to situations that are generally amenable only to special purpose processing. In addition, meta‐planning facilitates the representation of some situations that are difficult to express otherwise. We have begun to introduce meta‐planning knowledge into two systems: PAM, a story understanding program, and PANDORA, a problem solving and plannin̈g system. (shrink)

Finding “common ground” to fix some of the policy problems with the ACA was never expected to be easy. How challenging depends on the election outcome. With split government or even same party control of the Congress and White House but without a supermajority in the Senate, fixing identifiable problems requires remedies that might garner bipartisan cooperation. Some potential strategies that might meet this requirement are described.

We evaluate the “story grammar” approach to story understanding from three perspectives. We first examine the formal properties of the grammars and find only one to be formally adequate. We next evaluate the grammars empirically by asking whether they generate all simple stories and whether they generate only stories. We find many stories that they do not generate and one major class of nonstory that they do generate. We also evaluate the grammars' potential as comprehension models and find that they (...) would add nothing to semantic models that focus on the story content. Hence we advocate a story content oriented approach to studying story understanding instead of the structural story grammar approach. (shrink)

Health care reform is a perennial issue in elections — partly because of the challenges facing health care and especially because health care is an important issue for the swing voters. Making reform happen is harder. There are deep divisions within each of the parties — not apparent during elections. Bipartisan support — and the willingness to accept the best legislation that can be passed as “good enough”— will be key.

We are well into the political season that guarantees the election of a new president. Actually, this season, the election cycle began in November 2006, as soon as the off-year election ended. Not surprisingly, health care and reforming health care are major issues for the election — although somewhat less important than they were before late 2007.I use the phrase “not surprisingly” because there are easily understandable reasons why health care tends to be an election issue whenever we are electing (...) a new president. One obvious reason is that, for several decades, we have been plagued by sizeable numbers of people without health insurance and even more importantly, by unsustainable increases in health care spending and substantial numbers of people experiencing patient safety and clinical appropriateness problems. I regard the unsustainable spending and safety and quality problems as especially important because they affect all of us — not just the 15% of the population that is without health insurance. A number of criticisms of a recent paper byare made. (1) In attempting to assess the observational adequacy of story grammars, they state that a context‐free grammar cannot handle discontinuous elements; however, they do not show that such elements occur in the domain to which the grammars apply. Further, they do not present adequate evidence for their claim that there are acceptable stories not accounted for by existing grammars and that the grammars will accept nonstories such as procedures. (2) They (...) state that it has been proven that under natural conditions children cannot learn transformational grammars, which is a misrepresentation of the learnability proofs which have been offered. (3) Most important, they take an unduly narrow approach to story understanding by claiming that people only understand story content and do not have knowledge of story structure which is useful in comprehension or memory. Counterevidence from the literature is cited which indicates that such knowledge is both useful and used, and a number of methods for assessing the psychological adequacy of structural models are discussed. Oficjalny dorobek literacki Mariana Pankowskiego jest imponujący, ale dopiero przebadanie jego obfitego archiwum domowego pokazuje, ile literackich planów czy szkiców nie zostało zrealizowanych i, w związku z tym, jak naprawdę rozległa była twórczość tego pisarza. W jego prywatnych zbiorach znajdują się, między innymi, duże fragmenty planowanych sztuk, ciekawe warianty znanych z późniejszych oficjalnych wydań krótkich form prozatorskich, jak również pominięte rozdziały ze słynnej powieści Matuga idzie. Wśród innych materiałów, które dopiero czekają na odkrycie, są opowiadania, szkice, recenzje, relacje, a także (...) fraszki, dowcipy, wierszyki okazjonalne, setki listów, wreszcie prywatno-artystyczny dziennik pisany w drugiej połowie lat pięćdziesiątych XX wieku. To ważny dla historii polskiej literatury materiał, który czeka na kolejnych badaczy. W niniejszym artykule, łącząc metodę close reading niewydanych materiałów źródłowych z ujęciem komparatystycznym w odniesieniu do oficjalnej bibliografii omawianego pisarza, pokazano, w jakim stopniu warsztatowe wprawki oraz warianty wpływały na jego publikowaną twórczość lub ją uzupełniały. Black and Wilensky (1979) have made serious methodological errors in analyzing story grammars, and in the process they have committed additional errors in applying formal language theory. Our arguments involve clarifying certain aspects of knowledge representation crucial to a proper treatment of story understanding.Particular criticisms focus on the following shortcomings of their presentation: 1) an erroneous statement from formal language theory, 2) misapplication of formal language theory to story grammars, 3) unsubstantiated and doubtful analogies with English grammar, 4) various non (...) sequiturs concerning the generation of non‐stories, 5) a false claim based on the artificial distinction between syntax and semantics, and 6) misinterpretation of the role of story grammars in story understanding.We conclude by suggesting appropriate criteria for the evaluation of story grammars. Theorizing in ecology and evolution often proceeds via the construction of multiple idealized models. To determine whether a theoretical result actually depends on core features of the models and is not an artifact of simplifying assumptions, theorists have developed the technique of robustness analysis, the examination of multiple models looking for common predictions. A striking example of robustness analysis in ecology is the discovery of the Volterra Principle, which describes the effect of general biocides in predator-prey systems. This paper details (...) the discovery of the Volterra Principle and the demonstration of its robustness. It considers the classical ecology literature on robustness and introduces two individual-based models of predation, which are used to further analyze the Volterra Principle. Is bioethics consultation a profession? Withfew exceptions, the arguments andcounterarguments about whether healthcareethics consultation is a profession haveignored the historical and cultural developmentof professions in the United States, the wayssocial changes have altered the work andboundaries of all professions, and theprofessionalization theories that explain howmodern societies institutionalize expertise inprofessions. This interdisciplinary analysisbegins to fill this gap by framing the debatewithin a larger theoretical context heretoforemissing from the bioethics literature. Specifically, the question of whether ethicsconsultation is a profession is examined fromthe (...) perspectives of trait theory, Wilensky''sfive-stage process of professionalization,Abbott''s interdependent system of professions,and Haug''s deprofessionalization thesis. Whilehealthcare ethics consultation does not meetthe criteria to claim professional status,neither could most professions pass these idealtheoretical standards. Instead of a yes or nodichotomous response to the question, it ismore helpful to envision a professionalizationcontinuum with sales clerks or carpenters atone end and medicine or law at the other. En la Constitución de la República de Polonia del 2 de abril de 19971 se reconocía el carácter objetivo de ciertos valores y un cognoscitivismo axiológico. Si tomamos las disposiciones constitucionales en serio tenemos que aceptar que algunas valoraciones morales o que algunas proferencias [utterances] valorativas pueden ser verdaderas o falsas y que nos informan acerca de una realidad objetiva. Por otro lado, en la teoría del derecho polaca y en los cursos universitarios de lógica para abogados se encuentran definiciones (...) de la justificación axiológica de las normas y de normas axiológicas (normas que poseen una justificación axiológica) que presuponen que ningún valor es objetivo y que no pueden ser conocidos — se presupone un no-cognoscitivismo axiológico. Prasa mniejszości niemieckiej była w okresie II Rzeczypospolitej dość zróżnicowana, o czym świadczą liczne publikacje, choćby autorstwa Tadeusza Kowalska czy Wiesławy Kaszubiny. Sytuację taką można by wytłumaczyć faktem, iż ludność niemiecka, zróżnicowana pod względem społecznym, wyróżniała się znacznie wyższym niż przeciętny dla całego kraju poziomem świadomości czytelniczej. Znamienną cechą prasy niemieckiej była duża liczba gazet o charakterze politycznym, wśród których znajdowały się pisma o kierunku nacjonalistycznym, socjalistycznym oraz ugodowym. Na uwagę zasługują tu takie tytuły, jak: Lodzer Freie Presse, Lodzer Volkszeitung, (...) Neue Lodzer Zeitung, Der Deutsche Weg, Deutscher Volksbote czy Der Deutsche Wegweiser. Obok prasy politycznej ważne miejsce zajmowały wydawnictwa o charakterze wyznaniowym, które w wielu wypadkach miały za zadanie uzupełniać określone treści polityczne. W dalszej kolejności, również dużą popularnością wśród mniejszości niemieckiej w Łodzi cieszyła się prasa związków zawodowych, gospodarcza oraz kulturalno-oświatowa. Prasę dla kobiet, dzieci i młodzieży reprezentowały natomiast takie tytuły, jak: Jugendruf, Kinderfreund, Die Jugendwarte, Praktischer Vereinsleiter, Zeitschrift Jur Christliche Jugendführung. Zjawiskiem towarzyszącym rozwojowi prasy okresu międzywojennego - zarówno polskiej, jak i mniejszościowej - była trudna sytuacja finansowa wielu pism, które w wielu wypadkach przybrały charakter efemerydalny. Na brak środków nie narzekały natomiast gazety, takie jak narodowosocjalistyczna Freie Presse czy Der Deutsche Weg, które mogły liczyć na pomoc z Rzeszy. Były one redagowane na dość dobrym poziome, prowadziły stałe rubryki, jak wiadomości polityczne z kraju i ze świata, informacje lokalne czy sport, poza tym drukowały powieści w odcinkach, felietony oraz dodatki, mające rozszerzyć ofertę i zapewnić rozrywkę swojemu czytelnikowi. Również prasa ugodowa, reprezentowana przez dziennik Neue Lodzer Zeitung, oraz socjalistyczna, Die Volkszeitung, nie ustępowała swym poziomem innym gazetom łódzkim. (shrink)

Esej jest próbą przybliżenia ostatniej książki napisanej przez Rolanda Barthesa, która została właśnie przełożona na język polski. W dzienniku pisanym po śmierci matki, a zatytułowanym znamiennie Dziennikiem żałobnym, Barthes porusza kwestie żałoby, melancholii, depresji, odnosząc się zarówno do siebie i własnej straty, jak i podejmując dyskusję z Freudem, Lacanem czy psychoanalizą, zadając sobie przy tym pytanie, czy żałobnik po śmierci ukochanej osoby w ogóle chce wychodzić z żałoby i czy ma do tego jakiekolwiek prawo. Jest tu zatem ukazana ciekawa perspektywa (...) oglądu tego, co drzemie u samego jądra psychoanalizy, której wszak głównym zadaniem była praca z analizantem i - w trakcie godziny analitycznej - wyciąganie go z psychozy. Esej pokazuje również, co się dzieje z językiem żałobnika, w jaki sposób owo „pęknięcie”, którego nijak nie sposób zapełnić ani słowami, ani logosem, ani w końcu ciałem, które pozostaje, gdy ukochany umiera. I właśnie dziennik pisany jest takim językiem: pękniętym, bez żadnego celu, pozbawionym sensu. Owe fragmenty, którymi Barthesa zapełniał swój świat po śmierci matki, stanowią niezwykły dowód doświadczenia straty. (shrink)

Artykuł przedstawia historię archiwów Jana Lechonia w Polskim Instytucie Naukowym w Ameryce z siedzibą w Nowym Jorku oraz Kazimierza Wierzyńskiego w Bibliotece Polskiej w Londynie, zwracając uwagę na zasadniczo odmienny sposób ich powstania. Omawia też znajdujące się w obu zespołach inedita, wskazując z jednej strony, dlaczego warte byłyby publikacji po latach, z drugiej – sygnalizując wielorakie problemy, o różnym stopniu trudności, z którymi musiałby zmierzyć się edytor. Dotyczy to nieznanych tekstów Wierzyńskiego z cyklu radiowych gawęd Listy z Ameryki oraz powieści (...) o charakterze autobiograficznym Aurora. Inedita Lechonia to powieść Bal u senatora, znana w niewielkich fragmentach, oraz szkic biograficzno-polityczny o Henryku Floyar-Rajchmanie, czy satyry polityczne pisane w stylu warszawskiego Wiecha. Osobny problem stanowi dziennik Lechonia, którego wydanie krytyczne wymagałoby przede wszystkim ponownego odczytania arcytrudnego rękopisu. (shrink)

Artykuł prezentuje analizę badań pilotażowych przeprowadzonych w październiku 2018 roku w Puszczy Augustowskiej w odniesieniu do Konwencji UNESCO w sprawie ochrony niematerialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Celem pilotażu było „wejście do środowiska bartników” oraz zebranie materiału empirycznego poprzez prowadzenie etnograficznych badań terenowych. Podczas kilkudniowego pobytu autorka miała możliwość uczestniczenia w warsztatach bartniczych. Efekt wyjazdu terenowego to pozyskany materiał źródłowy, dokumentacja fotograficzna oraz filmowa, dziennik badań terenowych, wywiady nieustrukturyzowane. Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia zjawisko współczesnego bartnictwa na tle wybranych założeń sformułowanych w ramach przyjętej w (...) 2003 roku Konwencji UNESCO w sprawie ochrony niematerialnego dziedzictwa kulturowego. Artykuł dotyczy dwóch bardzo mało znanych utworów słynnych twórców literatury niemieckiej. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, twórca Fausta, ma w swym dorobku moralizatorski wiersz pt. Dziennik. Jednak z obawy o posądzenie go o niemoralne treści, nigdy za życia poety utwór ten nie został opublikowany. Również Siedem wierszy Rainera Marii Rilkego jest bardzo rzadko drukowanych. Mimo, iż Rilke długo wzbraniał się przed lekturą utworów niemieckiego wieszcza, to jednak Dziennik stanowił wyjątek. Wiersz Goethego poświęcony jest kryzysowi seksualnemu i twórczemu bohatera, za którym kryje (...) się sam poeta. Wiersze Rilkego stanowią cykl poświęcony aktowi miłosnemu dwojga kochanków. Artykuł stara się przeanalizować wzajemne związki obu tych tak różnych dzieł i odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy R. M. Rilke wzorował się na twórczości J. W. Goethego. (shrink)

Artykuł dotyczy kilku aspektów korespondencji Gustawa Waliszewskiego, skierowanej do Juliana Bartoszewicza w latach 1853–1855 i stanowiącej obecnie część Archiwum rodziny Bartoszewiczów z Archiwum Państwowego w Łodzi. Listy, obejmujące 163 karty, scharakteryzowane zostały z kilku perspektyw: a) biograficznej, która daje wgląd w osobowość młodego, ledwie zaczynającego karierę naukową człowieka, marzącego o karierze „narodowego Thierry’ego”; b) genetycznej, która listy traktuje jako materiał dokumentujący proces twórczy nad studiami historycznymi i felietonami dla „Dziennika Warszawskiego”, a także opisuje zmagania debiu­tanta z ograniczeniami cenzuralnymi; c) prasoznawczej (...) – związanej z obszernie eksplorowaną w listach tematyką rozwoju „Dziennika Warszawskiego”, jego rywalizacji z „Gazetą Warszawską” i walki o wpływy pisma na prowincji. Dodat­kowym kontekstem staje się cykl artykułów wspomnieniowych poświęconych Waliszewskiemu autorstwa Juliana Bartoszewicza, które stanowią swoiste dopełnienie niezachowanego bloku listów Bartoszewicza do Waliszewskiego.
