Karl Buhler (1879-1963) was one of the leading theoreticians of language of the twentieth century. This is an English translation of Buhler's theory that begins with a survey on 'Buhler's legacy' for modern linguistics (Werner Abraham), followed by the Theory of Language, and finally with a special 'Postscript: Twenty-five Years Later!'.

Many common arguments for physicalism begin with the principle that the cosmos is “causally closed.” But how good are the arguments for causal closure itself? I argue that the deductive, a priori arguments on behalf of causal closure tend to beg the question. The extant inductive arguments fare no better. They commit a sampling error or a non-sequitur, or else offer conclusions that remain compatible with causal openness. Issues of academic integrity, specifically knowledge of, perceptions and attitudes toward plagiarism, are well documented in post-secondary settings using case studies for specific courses, recording discourse with focus groups, analyzing cross-cultural education philosophies, and reviewing the current literature. In this paper, the authors examine the perceptions of graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines at the University of Florida regarding misconduct and integrity issues. Results revealed students’ perceptions of the definition and seriousness of potential academic misconduct, knowledge of (...) institutional procedures, and views on faculty actions, all with a focus on divergences between US and internationally-educated students. The open-ended questions provide anecdotal evidence to highlight personal experiences, positive and negative, aimed at the faculty, international students and undergraduates. Combined, these findings outline an important part of the campus academic integrity culture at a major American university. Recommendations for local actions also are discussed. (shrink)

The three young philosophers Kevin Mulligan, Peter Simons and Barry Smith have become well-known in the last few years especially in German-speaking analytical philosophy and phenomenology circles. This is on the one hand as a result of their historical and systematic philosophical work; but it is also because of the provocative way in which they represent their philosophy. Because they often appear in threes, they have become known as the "gang of three" or "three musketeers" or even – and this (...) in an admiring sense – "mafiosi" (Rescher). They are known primarily for the small workshops they have been organizing in uncomplicated Anglo-Saxon manner all over Europe. Their goal has been to show that analytic philosophy as it has been pursued up to now is in need of reform and also that the history of scientific philosophizing is not identical to the history of Anglo-Saxon analytic philosophy. Above all, they have tried to make more well known the Austrian tradition of scientific philosophy, and they can be given credit for having done much to promote the current interest in this tradition, which means: the history of Austrian philosophy of the 19th and early 20th centuries and its historical context in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Many discussions in the philosophy of the humanities and of the social sciences take it for granted that the term „interpretation“ unambiguously refers to only one well-defined activity. In this paper, I want to discredit this assumption. First, I distinguish seventeen different kinds of activity regarding linguistic utterances which are commonly considered activities of interpretation. Then I specify diverse methodological requirements connected with each of the kinds of interpretation distinguished. Finally, I argue that attempts to give an unitary account of (...) interpretation-such as ‚assigning meaning to something’-fail to do justice to the multifariousness of the activities commonly called ‚interpretation’. First of all, and above all, a sign is expected to be significant. A sign without significance is like a hollow husk. It is chaff without seed. Sign and significance are correlative terms like parent and child. Just as no one is a parent who has not begotten or borne a child so nothing which does not have significance can be a sign. On this point the English and the Latin words are self-explanatory. In English the words “sign” and “significance” (...) contain the same root. In the Latin words “significans” – that which signifies – and “significatum” – that which is signified – the correlation is even more obvious. In German, however, there is no such ready evidence of the correlation in the terms themselves. Indeed at first blush the terms “Zeichen” and “Bedeutung” seem so unrelated that philosophers have felt themselves constrained to write volumes of explanations on the term “Bedeutung”. (shrink)

Im vorliegenden Aufsatz unterscheide ich verschiedene Weisen, in denen Interpretationen richtig oder falsch sein können. Ich komme zu dem Resultat, dass Interpretationen richtig oder falsch sind, sofern ihr deskriptiver Inhalt hinreichend bestimmt ist. Die Richtigkeit oder Falschheit der Interpretation hängt dabei davon ab, ob der deskriptive Inhalt wahr oder falsch ist.

Le volume que les éditions Albin Michel viennent de publier (2021) sous le titre : Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Œuvres complètes. Tome 1, pose problème. Il est peu probable que le projet de l’éditeur soit de proposer une traduction française des trente-sept volumes de l’édition allemande. Par ailleurs, la traduction déjà ancienne (des années 1950 et 1960) des quatre romans de ce volume s’avère difficile et trahit souvent, sous divers angles, les textes originaux de l’auteur alémanique.

Welche Anforderungen können an Interpretationen gestellt werden, wenn sie Erkenntnisse vermitteln sollen? In diesem Aufsatz führe ich sieben solcher Anforderungen auf und erläutere sie knapp: (1) Eine Interpretation soll mit dem Anspruch auf empirische Erkenntnis verbunden sein. (2) Sie befasst sich mit einem historischen Einzelfall. (3) Sie erklärt die Beschaffenheit von Texten psychologisch mit Absichten und Überzeugungen. (4) Diese Absichten und Überzeugungen haben Inhalte, sind über etwas. (5) Interpretationen sind im Sinne des Metaphysischen Realismus aufzufassen. (6) Die Tätigkeit der Texthervorbringung (...) wird als Prozess angesehen, der einer einheitlichen zusammenhängenden Welt angehört. (7) Deswegen sind die Methoden der Textinterpretation nicht grundsätzlich verschieden von den Methoden anderer Wissenschaften, auch nicht der Naturwissenschaften, die alle dieselbe einheitliche Welt untersuchen.
