  1. Speech Acts: The Contemporary Theoretical Landscape.Daniel W. Harris, Daniel Fogal & Matt Moss - 2018 - In Daniel Fogal, Daniel W. Harris & Matt Moss (eds.), New Work on Speech Acts. Oxford University Press.
What makes it the case that an utterance constitutes an illocutionary act of a given kind? This is the central question of speech-act theory. Answers to it—i.e., theories of speech acts—have proliferated. Our main goal in this chapter is to clarify the logical space into which these different theories fit. -/- We begin, in Section 1, by dividing theories of speech acts into five families, each distinguished from the others by its account of the key ingredients in illocutionary acts. Are (...)

  2. New Work on Speech Acts.Daniel Fogal, Daniel W. Harris & Matt Moss (eds.) - 2018 - Oxford University Press.
This volume presents new essays by leading figures in speech-act theory, the interdisciplinary study of things we do with words. They range over formal semantics and pragmatics, foundational issues about the nature of linguistic representation, and issues at the intersection of the philosophy of language, ethics, and political philosophy.

    Practically Useless? Why Management Theory Needs Popper.Mark W. Moss - 2003 - Philosophy of Management 3 (3):31-42.
What would Karl Popper have made of today’s management and organisation theories? He would surely have approved of the openness of debate in some quarters, but the ease with which many managers accept the generalisations of some academics, gurus and consultants might well have troubled him. Popper himself argued that processes of induction alone were unlikely to lead to developments in knowledge and considered processes of justification to be more important. He claimed that it was not through verifying theories from (...)

Constructing appropriate bioprinting regulations: the ethical importance of recognising a liminal technology.Megan Frances Moss - forthcoming - Journal of Medical Ethics.
This article provides an analysis of bioprinting personalised medical device technology and its ethical challenges to regulation and research ethics. I argue the inclusion of bioprinting applications within existing regulatory frameworks does not adequately address the technologies disruption to the traditionally siloed activities of research and treatment. Using the conceptual framework of liminality, I offer a meaningful way to engage with this technology and address some identified concerns with how it will be categorised and the appropriate recognition of its evidentiary (...)

Education and Its Discontents: Teaching, the Humanities, and the Importance of a Liberal Education in the Age of Mass Information, by Mark Moss, is an exploration of how the traditional educational environment, particularly in the post-secondary world, is changing as a consequence of the influx of new technology. Students now have access to myriad of technologies that instead of supplementing the educational process, have actually taken it over. Faculty who do not adapt face enormous obstacles, and those who do adapt (...)

Enduring Values In the Philosophy of Benedetto Croce.Myra Moss - 1980 - Idealistic Studies 10 (1):46-66.
Benedetto Croce was the foremost Italian philosopher of our time. Twenty-five years have passed since he died. Given the perspective of that quarter century, it is useful to ask which of his concepts have proven of lasting value. In Croce’s terms: What still “lives” in the Crocean system? Because this philosopher-historian-critic’s writings were so wide in scope, it is difficult to estimate his trenchant contributions to contemporary thought. We need, however, to examine a central aspect of his doctrine which has (...)

    The Crocean Concept of the Pure Concept.M. E. Moss - 1987 - Idealistic Studies 17 (1):39-52.
Discussions in English of Benedetto Croce’s concept of the pure or logical concept are few in comparison with treatments of his aesthetics and theory of history. Yet an understanding of the Crocean concrete universal is a necessary prerequisite for a comprehension of his humanistic philosophy. With regard to Croce’s aesthetics, for instance, the autonomy of art depended upon his view of the relations that existed among the categories of thought and will; and his theory of history followed from his definitions (...)
