Moving from the structure of rites of passage, since Arnold Van Gennep’s renowned work (1909), to the essence of liminality captured by Victor Turner (1967), I propose a neurocognitive anthropological approach dealing with the bistable liminality found in human narrative imaginaries. In a brain-culture nexus, I will examine the liminal phase of the rites of passage by drawing on the enactive cognitive bistability property of the human brain. Recalling that the fundamental property of bistable systems is the alternation of two (...) distinct states of stable equilibrium, I propose a model that identifies the neurocognitive bases on which the transcultural variations of narrative motifs related to metamorphosis can be woven. Ayant enquêté auprès de plusieurs jhākri/chamans de l’Himalaya népalais, nous avons pu explorer leur espace liminal, cet « entre-deux » qui sépare le monde des morts de celui des vivants. En cherchant à reconstituer la complexité des rapports entre pratiques rituelles et pratiques narratives des systèmes de croyance hindoue, nous avons considéré ce limen comme un lieu de passage, aux frontières fluides, pour des ontologies surnaturelles et des êtres humains aux pouvoirs exceptionnels, en l’occurrence ces jhākri népalais. À partir des (...) données ethnographiques concernant le rituel d’incorporation au cours duquel ces chamans himalayens peuvent fusionner avec leur esprit tutélaire, nous avons développé un modèle en nous basant sur une propriété du cerveau confirmée depuis la Gestalt : sa bistabilité cognitive enactive. L’incorporation, qui prend place en phase liminale, se déroule bien selon un cycle bistable, avec une alternance constante de deux expressions formelles, métemmorphoses, chacune potentiellement stable en mode fusionnel ou ségrégationnel. C’est là selon nous que réside tout le « secret » du succès de telles conceptions métemphysiques autour de la métemsomatose, hypertrophiée chez le jhākri passeur intra mundi en mode bistable. Our recent investigations among several jhākri/shamans from the Nepal Himalaya allowed us to identify a liminal “in-between” space, separating the world of the dead from the living one. From the relationship between ritual practices and narratives in Hindu beliefs, we can consider this limen, with fluid boundaries, as a crossing point for different supernatural ontologies and for a few human beings with exceptional powers, Nepalese jhākris. To cope with the ethnographic data about the incorporation ritual, when these shamans may fuse with their tutelary spirit, we had to dwell on a model repeatedly fed since Gestalt findings, endowing the brain with an enactive cognitive bistability property. This incorporation ritual which takes place in the liminal phase, evolves in such a bistability cycle, with two alternating morphings, each potentially stable in a fusion or segregation mode. Her lies the core for the success of such metemphysical concepts about metensomatosis, overdeveloped in the jhākri as a bistable intermediary intra mundi. (shrink)

En reconsidérant les récits noyaux des rites de passage de transformations en loups-garous, dans les récits de la Grèce antique jusqu’au folklore contemporain de la France — domaine principal de notre thèse en anthropologie des religions — en passant par les rapports issus à la Renaissance des pays baltes, il apparaît que la présence d’une forte composante aquatique chez les loups-garous a été clairement sous-estimée, par rapport à l’accent répétitivement mis sur l’influence de la lune. Et ce n’est pas seulement (...) que le processus de la métamorphose se réalise par le passage à travers les eaux, stagnantes ou courantes, car il peut se produire qu’un mégalithe avec cupule fréquenté par les garous serve dans un rite païen de confirmation du baptême. Sans compter d’autres êtres fantastiques proprement aquatiques qui se révèlent être des loups-garous déclarés. En remettant en phase la relation de fertilité impliquant la lune et les eaux par rapport à ce cadre rituel, il devient clair que l’on peut dorénavant placer sur le même pied leurs médiations dans cette métamorphose matricielle qu’est la lycanthropie. Reconsidering core narratives of lycanthropic rites of passage, from ancient Greece to contemporaneous French folklore—the main field of our thesis in anthropology of religion —via Baltic reports giving a first view of Renaissance in Livonia, it appears that there is a strong aquatic component which has been underestimated in werewolves, compared to the emphasis put upon moon influence. Not only metamorphosis occurs when crossing ponds or rivers, but even cup marks on megaliths can contribute to a pagan confirmation rite just after christening. Not to speak of other fantastic aquatic beings which are recognized as true werewolves. Resetting the fertility relationship between waters and the moon into this ritual framework proved to be the key for understanding their mediations on the same footing in this metamorphosis matrix: lycanthropy. The idea that an adequate semantics of ordinary language calls for some theory of events has sparked considerable debate among linguists and philosophers. On the one hand, so many linguistic phenomena appear to be explained if (and, according to some authors, only if) we make room for logical forms in which reference to or quantification over events is explicitly featured. Examples include nominalization, adverbial modification, tense and aspect, plurals, and singular causal statements. On the other hand, a number of deep (...) philosophical questions arise as soon as we take events into consideration. Are events entities of a kind? What are their identity and individuation criteria? How does semantic theorizing depend on such metaphysical issues? In this paper I provide an exposition and critique of the Organic View of Ethical Status, as outlined by Torrance (2008). A key presupposition of this view is that only moral patients can be moral agents. It is claimed that because artificial agents lack sentience, they cannot be proper subjects of moral concern (i.e. moral patients). This account of moral standing in principle excludes machines from participating in our moral universe. I will argue that the Organic View operationalises anthropocentric intuitions (...) regarding sentience ascription, and by extension how we identify moral patients. The main difference between the argument I provide here and traditional arguments surrounding moral attributability is that I do not necessarily defend the view that internal states ground our ascriptions of moral patiency. This is in contrast to views such as those defended by Singer (1975, 2011) and Torrance (2008), where concepts such as sentience play starring roles. I will raise both conceptual and epistemic issues with regards to this sense of sentience. While this does not preclude the usage of sentience outright, it suggests that we should be more careful in our usage of internal mental states to ground our moral ascriptions. Following from this I suggest other avenues for further exploration into machine moral patiency which may not have the same shortcomings as the Organic View. (shrink)

IntroductionClassifying the ethical issues in clinical ethics consultations is important to clinical practice and scholarship. We conducted a systematic review to characterize the typologies used to analyze clinical ethics consultations.MethodsWe identified empirical studies of clinical ethics consultation that reported types of ethical issues using PubMed. We screened these articles based on their titles and abstracts, and then by a review of their full text. We extracted study characteristics and typologies and coded the typologies.ResultsWe reviewed 428 articles; 30 of the articles (...) fulfilled our inclusion criteria. We identified 27 unique typologies. Each typology contained five to 47 categories (mean = 18). The most common categories were do-not-attempt-resuscitation orders (19 typologies, 70 percent), capacity (18 typologies, 67 percent), withholding (18 typologies, 67 percent), withdrawing (17 typologies, 63 percent), and surrogate or proxy (16 typologies, 59 percent). Only seven (26 percent) of the typologies contained all five of the most common categories. The typologies we used to characterize clinical ethics consultations exhibit significant heterogeneity and several conceptual limitations. A common typology is needed whose development may require multi-institutional collaboration and could be facilitated by professional organizations. (shrink)

In this paper I provide an exposition and critique of Johnson and Noorman’s (2014) three conceptualizations of the agential roles artificial systems can play. I argue that two of these conceptions are unproblematic: that of causally efficacious agency and “acting for” or surrogate agency. Their third conception, that of “autonomous agency,” however, is one I have reservations about. The authors point out that there are two ways in which the term “autonomy” can be used: there is, firstly, the engineering sense (...) of the term, which simply refers to the ability of some system to act independently of substantive human control. Secondly, there is the moral sense of the term, which has traditionally grounded many notions of human mor-al responsibility. I argue that the continued usage of “autonomy” in discussions of artificial agency complicates matters unnecessarily. This occurs in two ways: firstly, the condition of autonomy, even in its engineering sense, fails to accurately describe the way “autonomous” systems are developed in practice. Secondly, the continued usage of autonomy in the moral sense introduces unnecessary meta-physical baggage form the free will debate into discussions about moral agency. In order to understand the debate surrounding autonomy, we would therefore first need to settle many seemingly intractable metaphysical questions regarding the existence of free will in human beings. International child rights law has the potential to change the way children are viewed and engaged by all social actors. It provides a child-centered perspective on all areas of children’s lives, including research with neonates. It differs from some bioethical perspectives by clearly articulating affirmative obligations owed to children and requiring rigorous monitoring mechanisms. O presente trabalho se propõe a analisar as narrativas da imprensa brasileira sobre a derrota de 7 a 1 do Brasil para a Alemanha em partida válida pela semifinal da Copa do Mundo de 2014, buscando identificar como a memória é acionada nesta oportunidade. Para isto se parte de uma hipótese, a de que algumas narrativas deste revés provavelmente se tornarão lembranças que futuramente serão acionadas por jornalistas esportivos quando se falar deste jogo.

This article aims at discussing an interesting variant of scientific realism recently proposed and defended by Sandra Mitchell (forthcoming), namely an affordances-based and pragmatist variant of scientific realism. We firstly place Mitchell’s proposal in the context of the current state of the debate over scientific realism. Secondly, we summarize the salient features of Mitchell’s proposal. Thirdly, we point out some aspects of that proposal that might require some further refinement and clarification in order to make it less prone to criticisms (...) by both realists and antirealists. More precisely, in this paper we address the following issues: 1) whether Mitchell’s proposal can be classified as a genuine form of scientific realism; 2) whether the fact that in Mitchell’s proposal figure some variants of the no miracle argument is in tension with some other of its features. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more and more pervasive in our everyday life, new questions arise about its ethical and social impacts. Such issues concern all stakeholders involved in or committed to the design, implementation, deployment, and use of the technology. The present document addresses these preoccupations by introducing and discussing a set of practical obligations and recommendations for the development of applications and systems based on AI techniques. With this work we hope to contribute to spreading awareness on the (...) many social challenges posed by AI and encouraging the establishment of good practices throughout the relevant social areas. As points of novelty, the paper elaborates on an integrated view that combines both human rights and ethical concepts to reap the benefits of the two approaches. Moreover, it proposes innovative recommendations, such as those on redress and governance, which add further insight to the debate. Finally, it incorporates a specific focus on the Italian Constitution, thus offering an example of how core legislations of Member States might contribute to further specify and enrich the EU normative framework on AI. Despite the tremendous empirical success of quantum theory there is still widespread disagreement about what it can tell us about the nature of the world. A central question is whether the theory is about our knowledge of reality, or a direct statement about reality itself. Current interpretations of quantum theory, regardless of their stance on this question, regard the Born rule as fundamental and add an independent state update (or ‘collapse’) rule to describe how quantum states change upon measurement. In (...) this paper we present an alternative perspective and derive a unified probability rule that subsumes both the Born rule and the collapse rule. We show that this more fundamental probability rule can provide a rigorous foundation for informational, or ‘knowledge-based’, interpretations of quantum theory. Our result requires an assumption of instrument non- contextuality, a key notion that generalises previous approaches to non-contextuality. Therefore, the framework also permits one to consider non-contextuality in scenarios with arbitrary causal structure. (shrink)

Many academic medical centers are seeking to attract patients from outside their historical catchment areas for economic and programmatic reasons, and patients are traveling for treatment that is unavailable, of poorer quality, or more expensive at home. Treatment of these patients raises a number of ethical issues including whether they may be given priority in scheduling outpatient follow-up appointments in order to reduce the period of time they are away from home. Granting them priority is potentially unjust because medical treatment (...) is generally allocated based on medical need and resource utilization, and then on a first-come, first-served basis. While it is difficult to compare the opportunity cost of waiting for an appointment to different patients, nonresident patients incur higher expenditures for travel, room, and board than resident patients. Giving them priority in scheduling to reduce these costs may be justifiable. Preferentially scheduling nonresident patients may also indirectly benefit resident patients consistent with Rawls’s difference principle. This potential justification, however, rests on several empirical claims that should be demonstrated. In addition to reducing resident patients’ waiting times, medical centers should not prioritize nonresident patients over resident patients with more urgent medical needs. There is, therefore, a limited and circumscribed justification for prioritizing nonresident patients in scheduling follow-up appointments. (shrink)

Recently, approach-avoidance tendencies and visual perception biases have been increasingly studied using bistable point-light walkers (PLWs). Prior studies have found a facing-the-viewer bias when one is primed with general threat stimuli (e.g. angry faces), explained by the “error management theory”, as failing to detect a threat as approaching is riskier than the opposite. Importantly, no study has explored how disease threat – linked to the behavioural immune system – might affect this bias. This study aimed to explore whether disease-signalling cues (...) can alter how we perceive the motion direction of ambiguous PLWs. Throughout 3 experiments, participants indicated the motion direction of a bistable PLW previously primed with a control or disease-signalling stimuli – that is, face with a surgical mask (Experiment 1), sickness sound (Experiment 2), or face with a disease cue (Experiment 3). Results showed that sickness cues do not significantly modulate the perception of approach-avoidance behaviours. However, a pattern emerged in Experiments 2 and 3, suggesting that sickness stimuli led to more facing away percepts. Unlike other types of threat, this implies that disease-related threat stimuli might trigger a distinct perceptual bias, indicating a preference to avoid a possible infection source. Nonetheless, this finding warrants future investigations. (shrink)

Realist interpretations of quantum mechanics presuppose the existence of elements of reality that are independent of the actions used to reveal them. Such a view is challenged by several no-go theorems that show quantum correlations cannot be explained by non-contextual ontological models, where physical properties are assumed to exist prior to and independently of the act of measurement. However, all such contextuality proofs assume a traditional notion of causal structure, where causal influence flows from past to future according to ordinary (...) dynamical laws. This leaves open the question of whether the apparent contextuality of quantum mechanics is simply the signature of some exotic causal structure, where the future might affect the past or distant systems might get correlated due to non-local constraints. Here we show that quantum predictions require a deeper form of contextuality: even allowing for arbitrary causal structure, no model can explain quantum correlations from non-contextual ontological properties of the world, be they initial states, dynamical laws, or global constraints. Recent developments in Hungary and Poland have made democratic backsliding a major issue of concern within the European Union. This article focuses on the secondary agents that facilitate democratic backsliding in Hungary and Poland: the European People’s Party, which has continually protected the Hungarian Fidesz government from EU sanctions, and the Hungarian ruling party Fidesz, which repeatedly promised to block any EU-level sanctions against Poland in the Council. The article analyses these agents’ behaviour as an instance of transnational complicity and (...) passes a tentative judgment as to which of the two cases is normatively more problematic. The analysis has implications for possible countervailing responses to democratic backsliding within EU member states. (shrink)

This paper investigates and develops generalizations of two-dimensional modal logics to any finite dimension. These logics are natural extensions of multidimensional systems known from the literature on logics for a priori knowledge. We prove a completeness theorem for propositional n-dimensional modal logics and show them to be decidable by means of a systematic tableau construction.

The American Medical Association opinion “Physician Exercise of Conscience” is generally sound; its recommendations regarding notice, nondiscrimination, informed consent, referral, and non-abandonment are reasonable. Within its focus on individual physicians’ duties to particular patients, it could also emphasize that physicians should only share the reasons for their objections if patients express an interest and that they should only share the reasons in a respectful manner. The opinion, however, neglects wider time frames and higher levels of organization. It could comment on (...) physicians’ duty to form their consciences appropriately and to select specialities and practice settings that do not engender excessive conflicts. Given the number of physicians who are not self-employed and the role of law in establishing rights and responsibilities, the opinion could also address employers’, legislatures’, and courts’ obligations to balance protecting physicians’ integrity and assuring patients’ access to medical treatment. Addressing these wider perspectives would greatly strengthen the opinion. (shrink)

Michael Potts, Paul A. Byrne, an David W. Evans are critical of donation after cardiac death (DCD). Contrary to the authors’ assertion that the removal of vital organs is the proximate cause of death, the eventual fulfillment of the neurological criteria of death is solely dependant on the rate of brain cell death in the absence of circulation. Consistent with the “dead donor rule,” DCD is not the cause of death. There are also procedural mechanisms to address the potential conflicts (...) of interest that concern the authors. ABSTRACT I present a new model of the self-regulation of virtue that integrates perspectives on emotion, cognition, and motivation. Across three vignette-based studies in US/uk (N = 1,540), I developed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis a multi-item measure of broadening and defensive responses, the Self-Regulation of Virtue Inventory (SRVI). I applied that measurement model to two new scenarios portraying prototypical moral exemplars (selected from a set of 12) and fitted structural models that identify key antecedents: motivational dispositions (regulatory focus (...) and hedonic orientation) and moral comparisons (opinion- and ability-based). The findings were consistent with network analysis, providing initial evidence of their robustness. By integrating literatures on motivation, emotion, social cognition and comparison within a self-regulation framework, I provide initial evidence to advance theory on moral self-regulation and moral education, with practical implications on how to maximise the upsides of virtue while mitigating or channelling its possible drawbacks. Patrick Grim advances arguments meant to show that the doctrine of divine omniscience—the classical doctrine according to which God knows all truths—is false. In particular, we here have in mind to focus on two such arguments: the set theoretic argument and the semantic argument. These arguments due to Grim run parallel to, respectively, familiar paradoxes in set theory and naive truth theory. It is beyond the purview of this article to adjudicate whether or not these are successful arguments against the (...) classical doctrine of omniscience. What we are here interested in is a way in which these arguments can be generalized. In particular, we show how generalizations of those arguments can target, explicitly, alternatives to the classical doctrine of omniscience, including what we here call 'restricted omniscience' and 'open future open theism'. As a corollary, considerations of Grim-style arguments do not support these alternatives to the classical doctrine of omniscience over the classical doctrine. We conclude that what is paradoxical is not the classical doctrine of omniscience just as such; rather, what is paradoxical is a core commitment shared by the classical doctrine and its more modest alternatives, namely, the thesis that God is a perfectly logical reasoner. The purpose of this paper is twofold: to reconstruct Dewey’s conception of experimentalism, mainly through his pedagogical writings, on the one hand; and to show the relevance of this reconstruction to current reassessments of Dewey’s political thought, on the other. The grounds for our perspective have a double character too. Firstly, we reconstruct the links between experimentalism and education on the basis of the first edition of How We Think (1910, MW 6), perhaps one of Dewey’s most noteworthy pedagogical texts. (...) Secondly, we critically address three different reassessments of Dewey’s experimentalism in contemporary political thought, namely: 1) Pappas’s defense of Dewey’s substantive idea of democracy; 2) Forstenzer’s proposal of Deweyan experimentalism as an appropriate methodology for political philosophy; and 3) Anderson’s vindication of Deweyan experimental democracy in the context of social epistemology. It is sustained that in HWT Dewey places experimentalism as a kind of antidote against dogmatism and unreflective ways of reasoning. Thus, he links experimentalism with anti-dogmatism placing a special role in schooling for at least two reasons: 1) it is in the schooling phase that children are still sensitive to the development of certain habits; 2) dogmatism seems inevitable in any society but the educational phase is a key instance to try to avoid it. Neither (1) nor (2) are present in contemporary reassessments of Deweyan experimentalism. (shrink)

Os comentadores dividem-se entre aqueles que vêem um problema menor, técnico, na explicação da crença na identidade pessoal e aqueles que vêem um problema maior, filosófico, que afetaria não só a seção “Da (...) identidade pessoal” como todo o projeto empirista desenvolvido no Tratato da Natureza Humana. Na terceira parte, exponho alguns dos problemas que podem ter levado à insatisfação apresentada pelo Apêndice. Este artigo trata do tema e problema da heterotopiaa partir do pensamento de Michel Foucault, noção essa pouco explorada por ele, no entanto, potencialmente profícua para o pensamento filosófico contemporâneo. Nele mostramos o que o filósofo francês chama de heterotopia e o modo como ela implica as noções de espaço, poder e saber. Para tanto abordamos textos foucaultianos especialmente da década de 1960 e 70. Interpretamos e nos reportamos assim às heterotopias que fazem parte dos estudos e trajetória de Foucault: (...) fábrica-convento, cidade operária, asilo psiquiátrico, prisão e Universidade Experimental de Vincennes. Compreendemos que a prisão e seus mecanismos constituem o exemplo paradigmático de uma heterotopia moderna que ainda diz muito sobre nós. Isso indica, vale notar, a complexidade e ambivalência da noção foucaultiana de heterotopia, na medida em que esta pode abarcar uma série de dispositivos nem sempre afins: por vezes, então, uma instituição disciplinar e um espaço biopolítico, outras vezes, uma universidade experimental. No debate cada vez mais urgente acerca das condições da democracia, sobressai-se o tema do reconhecimento de demandas individuais e coletivas. Na busca de uma avaliação consistente desse tema a obra de Charles Taylor apresenta-se como um importante balizador. Uma das preocupações centrais no pensamento do filósofo canadense é construir uma metodologia capaz de colocar em relevo a formação e a evolução do problema da identidade, eixo sem o qual o próprio discurso sobre a democracia e a participação política permanece (...) no campo abstrato, viciado por múltiplos pressupostos não examinados. A suposta “emancipação do indivíduo” em relação à sociedade, seja celebrada, seja deplorada, é para Taylor uma visão simplista. Sua obra apoia-se na tese de que a “revolução expressivista” conduziu ao horizonte moral do discurso a questão da luta por reconhecimento. O primeiro objetivo deste artigo é contextualizar e explicitar o projeto filosófico de Taylor, tomando como eixo central o modo como ele ofereceu uma compreensão sobre o problema da identidade. A partir daí, pretende-se mostrar como a ética da autenticidade, articulada ao tema da identidade, fundamenta-se através da necessidade de reconhecimento. Por fim, será realizado um retorno interpretativo aos seus primeiros textos, que versam sobre a obra de Hegel, a fim de demonstrar a vitalidade do pensamento hegeliano no campo da eticidade contemporânea. Taylor realiza uma problematização do pensamento de Hegel de maneira única e que confere originalidade ao seu pensamento, colocando-o em diálogo com outros teóricos acerca da esfera pública e das teorias da justiça. Segundo a interpretação tayloriana, as duas tendências do Iluminismo identificadas por Hegel – o atomismo social utilitarista e o impulso para a liberdade absoluta através da realização da vontade geral – continuaram dando forma ao desenvolvimento da sociedade moderna. Ambas as tendências continuam a impactar nossas sociedades sobre as mais variadas formas de igualitarismo e de individualismo radical. (shrink)

Examina-se aqui um estudo realizado por Theodor Adorno acerca das locuções radiofônicas do ativista político de extrema direita nos EUA, o pastor Martin Luther Thomas, à década de 30. Detendo-se nestes discursos por meio do método da análise de conteúdo, Adorno buscava entender os motivos que levaram os indivíduos a perpetuarem as mesmas relações econômicas que suas forças haviam superado, em vez de substituí-los por uma forma de organização social superior e mais racional. Passados mais de 70 anos, este estudo (...) é, sem dúvidas, um instrumental precípuo para compreendermos o atual cenário social, principalmente o político. (shrink)

A través de una reconstrucción sistemática de la concepción de unificación religiosa concebida por Hegel durante su estancia en Frankfurt, se busca poner de relieve tanto los aspectos peculiares y diferenciadores de ésta, como los elementos que anticipan el rumbo que adquirirá el pensamiento hegeliano desde Jena. La reconstrucción procede en tres pasos: tematización de la vida inmediata, de la reflexión y de su acción sobre la vida; caracterización de la religión como una elevación por sobre la finitud y acceso (...) a la vida infinita en cuanto espíritu; determinación de la función crítico-negativa de la filosofía, subordinada a la religión. Se concluye estableciendo que, en estos textos tempranos, Hegel llega a una estructura sistemática central para su pensamiento ulterior, a saber, la estructura vida-conocer-espíritu. Además se ofrece una consideración relativa al potencial liberador que para Hegel tienen tanto la religión como la filosofía, dado que ambas escapan a una forma específica de racionalidad hegemónica en la cultura. Este ensaio busca oferecer uma coleção de materiais historiográficos, em sua maior parte traduzidos do alemão, a bem da contextualização mais detalhada do papel de Moisés Mendelssohn no debate filosófico alemão da segunda metade do XVIII, em especial no que concerne à provável influência de suas reflexões em Kant e Hegel. Inicio com a consideração das novidades trazidas à tona por M. Serres no que concerne à interpretação de Leibniz, e o faço com o intuito de introduzir em sentido amplo (...) a problemática da _característica universal_, que servirá de fio condutor neste percurso. Tal introdução me permite definir alguns dos termos mediante os quais observaremos o debate entre Kant e Mendelssohn, a começar com a análise de alguns aspectos do concurso sobre a cientificidade da metafísica proposto pela Academia de Ciências da Prússia em 1762, e em seguida com a observação, mesmo que sumária, de alguns outros momentos importantes do contato entre ambos os filósofos. Meu objetivo é ilustrar a posição mendelssohniana, mesmo que de maneira introdutória, no intuito de se lançar alguma luz sobre seu projeto crítico de impor limites à razão teórica da matemática clássica e à razão prática da mística cabalística – diapasão em que se exercita a mágica e o fascínio do ideário da característica universal – o que promete, por sua vez, iluminar tanto alguns aspectos fundamentais do projeto da _Crítica da Razão Pura_ de Kant quanto da _Ciência da Lógica_ de Hegel. À guisa de conclusão relatarei, mesmo que de maneira episódica e sumária, aspectos da _querela do panteísmo_ e indicaremos brevemente como Kant e Hegel, de maneiras opostas, a ela reagiram. (shrink)

Resumo: Alguns eventos políticos transcorridos em um passado recente de uma nação, como uma ditadura militar, que perdurou durante vinte e quatro anos, produzem sequelas aparentemente invisíveis, com sintomas cuja origem é difícil de ser diagnosticada. A dificuldade desse diagnóstico está na razão de que, para muitos, a ditadura militar ocorrida em solo brasileiro se aproxima do não-Ser de Parmênides: impensável e indizível, algo que simplesmente deve ser esquecido. Mas como reconciliar-se com o nosso passado e construir bases sólidas de (...) uma nova democracia se não falamos e refletimos sobre nossas mazelas fomentadas, fundamentalmente, em “nossos campos”, nos porões dos DOPS? O presente artigo tem como objetivo refletir acerca de algumas características constitutivas da ditadura militar brasileira, transcorrida entre os anos de 1964 a 1988, balizada pelos conceitos de estado de exceção, vida nua e campo do filósofo italiano Giorgio Agamben. A pesquisa se justifica, uma vez que, em nosso entendimento, aproximar a ditadura militar brasileira com tópicas da filosofia política de Agamben, nos dota de importantes ferramentas argumentativas que nos auxiliam na compreensão do que se passou no Brasil em seus “anos de chumbo”.: Some political events passed in the recent past of a nation, as a military dictatorship, which lasted for twenty-four years, produce aparently invisible sequels, with symptoms whose origin is difficult to be diagnosed. The difficulty of this diagnosis is the reason that, for many, the military dictatorship that took place on Brazilian soil approaches the not-Being of Parmenides: unthinkable and unspeakable, something that should just be forgotten. But how to reconcile with our past and build solid foundations of a new democracy if we do not talk and reflect on our ills fostered mainly on "our fields", the holds of the Departments of Political and Social Order? This article aims to reflect on some constitutive features of the Brazilian military dictatorship, elapsed between the years 1964 to 1988, buoyed by the state of emergency concepts, bare life and field of the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben. The research is justified since, in our view, approaching the Brazilian military dictatorship with topical political philosophy of Agamben, endows us with important argumentative tools that help us understand what happened in Brazil in his "years of lead". A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo trabalhar o tema da liberdade na relação indivíduo e coletividade segundo o pensamento steiniano. Parte-se de uma investigação do indivíduo em relação consigo mesmo, com o outro para daí abstrair a essência da peculiaridade das influências externas do convívio do indivíduo na coletividade. Sendo assim, Stein analisa fenomenologicamente a pessoa humana em todas as suas dimensões e reconhece que é preciso averiguar as manifestações subjetivas da espiritualidade e examinar suas consequências na vida coletiva. Assim (...) uma investigação fenomenológica sobre a relação indivíduo e coletividade está subjacente à problemática de se saber como o indivíduo pode resguardar sua individualidade e liberdade na convivência coletiva. Para responder essa questão a autora apresenta o caminho da fé como abertura para que o indivíduo possa agir eticamente, consciente na coletividade tendo em vista o bem comum. A liberdade humana como dom da graça e como condição humana que se revela através da relação entre o reino da natureza e o reino da graça. (shrink)

The present brief commentary to Englert’s recent article on Kant’s distinction between practical ideas and ideals extends the significance of its contribution by considering the psychological dimensions underpinned by those ethical concepts. According to regulatory focus theory, in the moral domain the prevention focus subsumes duties and obligations, whereas the promotion focus underlies aspirations toward virtue. I argue here that prevention motives induce the enactment of behaviours consistent with ethical rules corresponding to Kant’s practical idea, and that promotion motives inspire (...) imitation processes aimed at advancement toward the archetypal excellence of Kant’s practical ideal. I conclude discussing the relevance and value, beyond Kant’s ethical conception, of a psychological analysis of the main Western normative theories through the lens of regulatory focus and the other motivational primitives. Cumulative Prospect Theory is the modern version of Prospect Theory and it is nowadays considered a valid alternative to the classical Expected Utility Theory. Cumulative Prospect theory implies Gain-Loss Separability, i.e., the separate evaluation of losses and gains within a mixed gamble. Recently, some authors have questioned this assumption of the theory, proposing new paradoxes where the Gain-Loss Separability is violated. We present a generalization of Cumulative Prospect Theory which does not imply Gain-Loss Separability and is able to explain the (...) cited paradoxes. On the other hand, the new model, which we call the bipolar Cumulative Prospect Theory, genuinely generalizes the original Prospect Theory of Kahneman and Tversky, preserving the main features of the theory. We present also a characterization of the bipolar Choquet Integral with respect to a bi-capacity in a discrete setting. (shrink)
