Moving from viruses, vaccines, and copycat murder to gay panics, xenophobia, and psychopaths, _Transforming Contagion_ energetically fuses critical humanities and social science perspectives into a boundary-smashing interdisciplinary collection on contagion. The contributors provocatively suggest contagion to be as full of possibilities for revolution and resistance as it is for the descent into madness, malice, and extensive state control. The infectious practices rooted in politics, film, psychological exchanges, social movements, the classroom, and the circulation of a literary text or meme on (...) social media compellingly reveal patterns that emerge in those attempts to re-route, quarantine, define, or even exacerbate various contagions. Research on bodies and sexualities has long debated ideas about choice, agency, and power, particularly as women conform to, or rebel against, traditional social scripts about femininity and heterosexuality. In this study, I have used responses from 34 college women who completed an extra credit assignment in a women’s studies class that asked them to reject social norms and grow out their leg and underarm hair for a period of 10 weeks. Responses reveal that women confronted direct and anticipated homophobia (...) and heterosexism from others as well as hostility for rejecting traditional norms of femininity. Heterosexual women regularly encountered demands that they acquire permission to grow body hair from their male partners, while queer and bisexual women expressed reluctance about further “outing” themselves via their body hair. I consider implications for linking sexual identity discrimination and body hair practices, and for imagining bodies as sites of resistance inside and outside of pedagogical settings. (shrink)

Im Zentrum der aus triebtheoretischer Perspektive erweiterten Theorie des Ödipuskomplexes von Judith Le Soldat steht das Konzept der aktiven Kastrationstat, die im Verlauf der ödipalen Entwicklung von Jungen wie Mädchen aufgrund der Versagung der passiven und aktiven phallischen Triebwünsche und des dadurch bewirkten aggressiven Triebdurchbruchs imaginär begangen wird. Diese ubiquitäre Kastrationstat führt zu Schuld, Kastrations- und Vernichtungsängsten, gegen die charakteristische Abwehrlösungen gefunden werden müssen, die ihrerseits wieder zu Ausweglosigkeiten in der inneren Welt führen. Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es, diese Trieb- (...) und Abwehrbewegungen und die aus ihnen resultierenden unbewussten Phantasien zu untersuchen, mit einem klinischen Beispiel zu illustrieren und das klinisch und theoretisch fruchtbare Potenzial der theoretischen Erweiterungen von Le Soldat aufzuzeigen. Anesthesiology training programs are tasked with equipping trainees with the skills to become medically and ethically competent in the practice of anesthesia and to be prepared to obtain board certification, yet there is currently no standardized ethics curriculum within anesthesia training programs in the United States. To bridge this gap, and to provide a validated ethics curriculum to meet the aforementioned needs, in July 2021, a survey was sent to anesthesia scholars in the field of biomedical ethics to identify key (...) areas that should be included in such an ethics curriculum. The responses were rated on a Likert scale and ranked. This paper identifies the top ten topics identified as high priority for inclusion in an anesthesiology training program and consequently deemed most relevant to meet the educational needs of graduates of an anesthesiology residency: (1) capacity to consent; (2) capacity to refuse elective versus lifesaving treatment; (3) application of surrogate decisionmaking; (4) approach to do not resuscitate (DNR) status in the operating room; (5) patient autonomy and advance directives; (6) navigating patient beliefs that may impair care; (7) “futility” in end-of-life care: when to withdraw life support; (8) disclosure of medical errors; (9) clinical criteria for “brain death” and consequences of this definition; and (10) the impaired anesthesiologist.
