Ranchers, Scientists, and Grass-roots Development in the United States and Kenya.Charis M. Thompson - 2002 - Environmental Values 11 (3):303-326.
Two initiatives in community-based biodiversity conservation are examined. I describe key aspects of the formation in the mid 1990s of the Malpai Borderlands Group of the Southwest US, and the reorganisation of the Kenya Wildlife Service during 1994–6 and their legacies since then. I review how history, ownership, membership, and valuation were appealed to, created, maintained, and contested in defining what should be saved, by and for whom, and how in each. I also suggest the central role of science and (...)

Indian philosophical systems: a critical review based on Vedānta Deśika's Paramata-bhaṅga.Srinivasa Chari & M. S. - 2011 - New Delhi: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers.
Description: This scholarly work of Dr S.M.S. Chari's deals with the critical review of seventeen philosophical systems as presented in an important philosophical treatise of the thirteenth century titled Paramata-bhanga contributed by Vedanta Desika, an illustrious successor to Ramanuja, who is the chief exponent of Visistadvaita Vedanta. The main objective of Paramata-bhanga is to establish that Visistadvaita is a sound system of philosophy as compared to the several other Non-Vedic as well as Vedic schools and also Vedanta schools developed by (...)

The philosophy of the Upaniṣads: a study based on the evaluation of the comments of Śaṁkara, Rāmānuja, and Madhva.Srinivasa Chari & M. S. - 2002 - New Delhi: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers.
Description: The Upanisads which contain lofty philosophical teachings of the great seers constitute the most authoritative sourcebook for the Vedanta system of philosophy. However, there is no unanimity among the ancient exponents of Vedanta regarding the nature of the philosophy adumbrated in the Upanisads. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to make a dispassionate study of the philosophical passages of the fourteen Principal Upanisads by giving due consideration to not only the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva, but more importantly, the (...)

    Advaita and Viśiṣṭādvaita.Srinivasa Chari & M. S. - 1961 - New York,: Asia Pub. House.
This book presents a comprehensive exposition of Vedanta Desika`s Satadusani, a polemical classic of Visistadvaita Vedanta, devoted to the criticism of the doctrines of Advaita Vedanta. The thought-provoking arguments found in the Sixty-six Vedas of the original text are brought together, analysed and discussed in a systematic manner under eight broad headings: Pramanas Perception; Consciousness; Individual self; Brahman; Universe; Avidya; Sadhana and Mukti. In presenting the dialectics of Vedanta Desika in a vigorous and scholastic form the author deals with numerous issues (...)

    Biocultural heritage of transhumant territories.M. H. Easdale, C. L. Michel & D. Perri - 2023 - Agriculture and Human Values 40 (1):53-64.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization recently declared transhumance pastoralism as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The notion of heritage seeks to recognize the culture behind the seasonal grazing movements along herding routes, between distant and dissimilar ecosystems. The pastoral families move with their herds from pasturelands used during the winter (winter-lands) to areas pastured during the summer (summer-lands). Whereas this is a key step towards the recognition of the cultural dimension associated to this ancient practice, a (...)

The Influence of Role Models on Negotiation Ethics of College Students.Gregory M. Perry & Clair J. Nixon - 2005 - Journal of Business Ethics 62 (1):25-40.
Role models can be highly influential in conveying ethical standards. This study investigates the influence various categories of role models have had on a population of over 1,600 undergraduate students in Texas, Oregon and Michigan. Those identifying clergy, boy scout leaders, friends and college advisors as role models exhibited less willingness to adopt questionable ethical behavior in negotation situations. Journalist and spouse role models tended to cause students to be more accepting of questionable behavior. Individuals with strong end-result and social (...)

Boundary Conditions of Ethical Leadership: Exploring Supervisor-Induced and Job Hindrance Stress as Potential Inhibitors.Matthew J. Quade, Sara J. Perry & Emily M. Hunter - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (4):1165-1184.
It is widely accepted that ethical leadership is beneficial for the organization, the leader, and followers. Yet, little has been said about potential limitations of ethical leadership, particularly boundary conditions involving the same person perceived to display ethical leadership. Drawing on conservation of resources theory, we argue that supervisor-induced hindrance stress and job hindrance stress are factors linked to the supervisor and work environment that may limit the positive impact of ethical leadership on employee deviance and turnover intentions. Specifically, we (...)

Addiction is a puzzle for popular understandings of human action. An addicted person may not simply choose to quit, nor can an addiction be reduced to a physiological predisposition to consume. After demonstrating some of the complexities of addiction that confound these misconceptions, I rely on Kent Dunnington’s Addiction and Virtue to situate addiction within the category of ‘habit.’ Then, I turn to John Calvin's brilliant description of the human person to further categorize an addiction as a religious habit. I (...)

What Is the Buzz About Iconicity? How Iconicity in Caregiver Speech Supports Children's Word Learning.Lynn K. Perry, Stephanie A. Custode, Regina M. Fasano, Brittney M. Gonzalez & Jordyn D. Savy - 2021 - Cognitive Science 45 (4):e12976.
One cue that may facilitate children's word learning is iconicity, or the correspondence between a word's form and meaning. Some have even proposed that iconicity in the early lexicon may serve to help children learn how to learn words, supporting the acquisition of even noniconic, or arbitrary, word–referent associations. However, this proposal remains untested. Here, we investigate the iconicity of caregivers’ speech to young children during a naturalistic free‐play session with novel stimuli and ask whether the iconicity of caregivers’ speech (...)

Policy education in a research‐focused doctoral nursing program: Power as knowing participation in change.Donna J. Perry, Saisha Cintron, Pamela J. Grace, Dorothy A. Jones, Anne T. Kane, Heather M. Kennedy, Violet M. Malinski, William Mar & Lauri Toohey - forthcoming - Nursing Inquiry:e12615.
Nurses have moral obligations incurred by membership in the profession to participate knowingly in health policy advocacy. Many barriers have historically hindered nurses from realizing their potential to advance health policy. The contemporary political context sets additional challenges to policy work due to polarization and conflict. Nursing education can help nurses recognize their role in advancing health through political advocacy in a manner that is consistent with disciplinary knowledge and ethical responsibilities. In this paper, the authors describe an exemplar of (...)

Coordination of Caregiver Naming and Children’s Exploration of Solid Objects and Nonsolid Substances.Lynn K. Perry, Stephanie A. Custode, Regina M. Fasano, Brittney M. Gonzalez & Adriana M. Valtierra - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
When a caregiver names objects dominating a child’s view, the association between object and name is unambiguous and children are more likely to learn the object’s name. Children also learn to name things other than solid objects, including nonsolid substances like applesauce. However, it is unknown how caregivers structure linguistic and exploratory experiences with nonsolids to support learning. In this exploratory study of caregivers and children we compare caregiver-child free-play with novel solid objects and novel nonsolid substances to identify the (...)

Requiring Athletes to Acknowledge Receipt of Concussion‐Related Information and Responsibility to Report Symptoms: A Study of the Prevalence, Variation, and Possible Improvements.Christine M. Baugh, Emily Kroshus, Alexandra P. Bourlas & Kaitlyn I. Perry - 2014 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 42 (3):297-313.
State concussion laws and sport-league policies are important tools for protecting public health, but also present implementation challenges. Both state laws and league policies often require athletes provide written acknowledgement of having received concussion-related information and/or of their responsibility to report concussion-related symptoms. This paper examines these requirements in two ways: an analysis of the variation in state laws and sport-league policies and a study of their effects in a cohort of collegiate football players.
