The article attempts to put the undervalued cultural phenomenon of offering comfort by means of persuasive speech acts (‘arguments’) on the research agenda of the human¬ities. The article proceeds in four steps. First, it defines ‘argumentative consolation’. Second, it argues that there has been a broad overlap of ancient philosophical and Christian modes of argumentative consolation. Third, it would be misguided to attribute today’s uneasiness with argumentative consolation to a process of ‘secularization’; the uneasiness stems from a radicalized intensification of (...) life that is played out against the possibility of consolation in the face of death. Fourth, the ensuing emphasis on the notions of desires, plans and projects to measure the completeness of a life is self-defeating. The article argues the continued relevance of pre-modern argumentative consolation that identified virtue as the key factor in the completeness of a biography. (shrink)

In dit essay zal daarvan een overzicht gegeven worden en een voorstel voor een verantwoorde wijsgerige benadering van literatuur gedaan worden. Ten slotte zal deze werkwijze aan de hand van een voorbeeld geconcretiseerd worden.

Dans la Consolatio philosophiae, Boèce infléchit en direction de l’éthique son interrogation. La doctrine de la liberté qu’il propose dans ce cadre ne rompt toutefois pas avec la conception de la contingence qu’il avait élaborée dans le cadre de ses commentaires d’Aristote, plus spécialement du chapitre IX du De interpretatione. Si la volonté de mettre en avant la liberté humaine manifeste une inspiration chrétienne, l’élaboration de la doctrine correspondante suggère ainsi une reprise de sources antiques non spécifiquement chrétiennes.

One of the primary concerns of the Consolatio is to draw out many of the paradoxical conclusions concerning the relation between creation and God that stem from the premises of classical creationist metaphysics, and attempt to solve them. Once one accepts that God does exist, is omnipotent, omniscient, and simple, it becomes viciously difficult to explain: (1) how anything contrary to God’s will—evil—can exist; (2) how any cause can act independently of God’s will—human freedom; and (3) how “independent causes” (...) can relate to God through their own agency—human prayer. This naturally begs the question: why should we accept the premises of classical creationist metaphysics? This paper addresses this question by analyzing and defending two of the central premises of Boethius’s version of classical creationist metaphysics as they are addressed in Consolatio III,10: (a) that God exists, and (b) that God is simple. Die "Consolatio Philosophiae," spatantikes Meisterwerk des Boethius, fungiert seit ihrer Wiederentdeckung durch Alkuin am Ende des 8. Jahrhunderts als Ausgangspunkt zahlreicher Kommentare und Ubersetzungen, die fur die europaische Geistesgeschichte pragend sind. Dieses Buch beleuchtet eine noch grossenteils unerforschte Texttradition: Franzosische Consolatio-Versionen des Mittelalters und der Fruhen Neuzeit bilden den Gegenstand der Analyse, bei der translatorische Strategien, diskursive Vernetzungen mit anderen Texten und Traditionen sowie sprachhistorische Entwicklungen sichtbar werden. Zur umfassenden Ermittlung komplexer Sinnstiftung werden jeweils historisches Umfeld, Paratextualitat und (...) Textstruktur sowie lexikalische und metrisch-rhetorische Besonderheiten der Ubersetzungen herausgestellt. (shrink)

The paper re-edits and discusses a medieval text that contains a syncrisis of Plato and Plautus. I argue that, in addition to fragments from lost comedies of Plautus, the text also contains a previously unrecognized fragment of the playwright Pacuvius. The same fragment seems to have been known to Remigius of Auxerre (or his model) when he wrote his commentary on consolatio Philosophiae of Boethius.

Notkers um 1000 entstandene Bearbeitung der spätantiken »Consolatio Philosophiae« steht in der Tradition der karolingischen Rezeption, die die »Consolatio« zur Vermittlung christlicher Bildung im Rahmen des didaktischen Konzepts der artes liberales nutzt, und bedeutet gleichzeitig eine Innovation: Notker bedient sich tradierter Techniken der Texterschließung, indem er auf die Glossierungstypen lateinischer Textkommentare zurückgreift. Zugleich bezieht er die althochdeutsche Volkssprache in Form von Kommentar und Übersetzung in seine Texterklärung ein und nutzt die Lektüre der »Consolatio« als Ausgangspunkt für theoretische (...) Wissensvermittlung, vor allem auf dem Gebiet des Trivium und philosophisch-theologischer Fragenkomplexe. Seine Bearbeitung ist die erste umfassende Werkinterpretation zur »Consolatio«. Die vorliegende Studie ist die erste Monographie zu diesem Text seit dem Buch von Ingeborg Schröbler (1953). Sie bestimmt Notkers Ort innerhalb der Textgeschichte der »Consolatio« unter Einbeziehung zum Teil noch ungedruckter lateinischer Kommentare und arbeitet in Detailanalysen und im systematischen Überblick die formal-technischen und inhaltlichen Charakteristika seiner Bearbeitung vor dem Hintergrund der St. Galler Bildungstradition, der Unterrichtsmethoden und der wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen seiner Zeit heraus. Martha Nussbaum defends the use of narratives, especially novels, in moral education. Reading novels not only stimulates the moral imagination, she claims, but also provides moral insights which cannot be conveyed in any other way. This paper questions several aspects of Nussbaum’s theory. First, by assuming a straightforward connection between reading fiction and moral behaviour, Nussbaum neglects a crucial distinction between emotional and real identification. Second, in stressing the importance of imagination, Nussbaum ignores love as a more genuine source of (...) altruism. Third, a system that censors literature in the name of moral education involves some risks which this paper will explore. Fourth, it is argued that Nussbaum’s preference for fiction above real-life experience is a little awkward. And finally, Nussbaum’s model for moral education turns out to be problematic not only in theory but also in practice. (shrink)

This essay places More's Sadness of Christ in the ancient genre of consolatio. Arising out of Socrates’ use of philosophy as a means of consolation in the Phaedo, the genre was epitomized in Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy. In the genre, philosophy, with the help of poetry and rhetoric, provides moral remedies to suffering man with the hope of reordering his passions, intellect, and will to their true good. In other words, the genre of consolatio is philosophy's attempt to (...) provide a solution to the moral problem of evil. Thomas More's Sadness of Christ is a Christian version of this ancient genre. While appropriating philosophical principles and images, More recasts those principles and images in the light of faith, and gives the Christian martyr's proper preparation for death and suffering by reordering his passions and intellect to their proper good through consolation in prayer and meditation on the sufferings of Christ. In this paper I shall attempt to show that the difference which Boethius has in mind when distinguishing between conditional and simple necessity in the fifth book of Philosophiae Consolatio is not, as already Thomas Aquinas presumed, the difference between a necessitas consequentiae and the corresponding necessitas consequentis, but rather the difference between the necessity of a given state of affairs which is necessary in the sense that at the moment of its existence its present existence is unchangeable, and (...) the necessity of a given state of affairs which is necessary in the sense that even prior to the moment of its existence its future existence is unavoidable. This collection of new essays locates Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae in the medieval context of Latin learning and vernacular translations. The first part is devoted to the Latin commentary tradition, while the other parts explore the vernacular traditions.

Three important medieval manuscripts of the "Consolatio Philosophiae" were copied from the same archetype: either a late-ancient archetype or a good copy of one. It existed in Reichenau in the first half of the IX century and was taken by Irish monks to Liegi in the second half of the IX century, where Sedulius Scotus lived and taught. The manuscript belonged to the bishops of Liegi, who closely associated with Sedulius. At the end of the IX century, they had (...) a copy made, which they inserted in the very recent commentary to the m. IX, b. III, written by Bovo of Corvey, together with another short anonymous commentary, a reply to Bovo. Quoting Macrobius, Bovo attacked Boethius and his Neoplatonic opinions, but the anonymous commentary defended him, showing with the help of Calcidius that such opinions are not Neoplatonic, but Platonic or Middle Platonic and not very far from the Catholic faith. Die Untersuchung der wallonischen consolatio-Übersetzung führte zur Entdeckung und Neudatierung eines lateinischen consolatio-Kommentars, der auch von Jean de Meun benutzt wurde. Somit kann durch Gegenüberstellung von Vorlage und Übersetzung an einem konkreten Beispiel Einblick in die Übersetzungspraxis im Mittelalter gewonnen werden.

In Boethius’s Consolatio Philosophiae one finds a rather unusual argument contending that human beings can lose their natures as the result of immoral or virtuous activity. A number of texts in the work argue that the polarities of beast and god serve as options for those who lead highly immoral or highly virtuous lives. This argument is examined in detail in light of its philosophical ancestry. I argue that those who think the Boethian doctrine is Platonic in origin tend (...) to read the texts about the loss of human nature as metaphorical. I then suggest that if one places the argument in an Aristotelian context one is able to see it as a metaphysical argument, and moreparticularly, as part of Boethian psychology. This paper thus provides a new context for approaching Boethius’s contention that human beings can lose their natures. (shrink)
