Lancashire Hodge-Podge: Reading the John Rylands Library through the Concept of Hybridity.John Hodgson - 2015 - Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 91 (1):81-96.
Postcolonial theory has yielded productive methodologies with which to examine an institution such as the John Rylands Library. This paper reinterprets aspects of the Library‘s history, especially its collecting practices, using Bhabha‘s concept of hybridity. The Library‘s founder, Enriqueta Rylands, embodied hybridity and colonial talking back in her remarkable trajectory from a Catholic upbringing in Cuba, via her conversion to Nonconformity and her marriage to Manchester‘s most successful cotton manufacturer, to her usurpation of the cultural hegemony in purchasing spectacular aristocratic (...)

An open letter to the Roman catholic bishops of the united states of America regarding the morality of our nation's war on the people of afghanistan.Catholic Worker House in Lyons - unknown
Today is dedicated to the remembrance of the Holy Innocents, who were victims of a state sponsored terrorist attack at the very beginning of the Christian era. We believe this is an appropriate spiritual time to review and question the moral judgement of the Catholic Bishops of the United States of America that our nation's war on the people of Afghanistan is just. We do this in a spirit of fidelity to the teachings of the Catholic Church and to the (...)

Humanist pretensions: Catholics, communists, and Sartre's struggle for existentialism in postwar france*: Edward baring.Edward Baring - 2010 - Modern Intellectual History 7 (3):581-609.
This article reconsiders Sartre's seminal 1945 talk, “Existentialism is a Humanism,” and the stakes of the humanism debate in France by looking at the immediate political context that has been overlooked in previous discussions of the text. It analyses the political discussion of the term “humanism” during the French national elections of 1945 and the rumbling debate over Sartre's philosophy that culminated in his presentation to the Club Maintenant, just one week after France went to the polls. A consideration of (...)

I am grateful to the Catholic Theological College for inviting me to give the Cardinal Knox Lecture for 2018, the centenary year of the end of the First World War, and to reflect on the way the Catholic Church in Australia related to and was affected by that war, a war that began in the same year that Cardinal Knox, in whose honour we meet tonight, was born.

This paper investigates how Edward Pusey, a nineteenth century Anglican clergy and scholar responded to Edward Manning’s claim that the Church of England is not an authentic church. This led the former to write his Eirenicon, as an intellectual justification and a response to apostolicity and catholicity of the Anglican faith. Eirenicon is an example in rigorous dialogue on religious faith claims. The ecumenical rapprochement suggested by Pusey is very insightful: emphasis on the elements that unites Roman Catholics and (...)

McKinley, Diana; Webber, Ruth This paper is an ecclesial study of the baptismal response of twenty-three Catholics between the ages of twenty-one and forty-one, from six Catholic dioceses across Australia. The study was undertaken between 2008 and 2010. The purpose of the study was to investigate how committed Catholics from Generation X (born 1961-1975) and Generation Y (born 1976-1990) came to faith, and why they continued to practise their Catholic faith, despite falling Mass attendance generally. An unexpected result (...)

Benjamin, Anne South Sudanese Catholic communities have been a significant part of the Australian church for nearly two decades, yet it appears little has been published on their pastoral needs. This article responds to this gap in the literature and focuses on current pastoral needs of Australian Sudanese Catholics that emerged from a study recently completed for the Sydney archdiocese and Parramatta diocese. As such, it provides the pastoral context and offers a platform from which appropriate pastoral initiatives might (...)
