  3. The ideological impediment: Epistemology, feminism and film theory.Jennifer Hammett - 1997 - In Richard Allen & Murray Smith (eds.), Film theory and philosophy. New York: Oxford University Press. pp. 244--259.
This chapter looks at the ideological impediment of epistemology and feminism. Beginning with the first premise of semiology, Johnston reminded feminists that cinematic images are representations. Feminists were quick to embrace the concept of ideology. But as per this chapter's analysis, the inevitable failure of feminist film scholars to theorize an escape from ideology has no consequences for the practice of feminist film criticism. Thus, there is no consequence for feminism. So in order to avoid falsification effects of representation, we (...)

Three Layers of Metaphors in Ross Macdonald’s Black Money.Lech Zdunkiewicz - 2019 - Text Matters - a Journal of Literature, Theory and Culture 9 (9):259-270.
In his early career, Kenneth Millar, better known as Ross Macdonald, emulated the style of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. By the 1960s he had established himself as a distinct voice in the hardboiled genre. In his Lew Archer series, he conveys the complexity of his characters and settings primarily by the use of metaphors. In his 1966 novel Black Money the device performs three functions. In the case of minor characters, the author uses metaphors to comment on Californian (...)

    Kant on Detective Fiction.Robert Zaslavsky - 1983 - Journal of Value Inquiry 17 (1):53-64.
The author examines the way in which the code of the hard-boiled detective, as exemplified especially in Dashiell Hammett's novels, is a crude but accurate version of the Kantian ethics of duty, an ethics that is quintessentially modern.

The origin and development of the acidity function.Richard Martin Pagni - 2009 - Foundations of Chemistry 11 (1):43-50.
The acidity function is a thermodynamic quantitative measure of acid strength for non-aqueous and concentrated aqueous Brønsted acids, with acid strength being defined as the extent to which the acid protonates a base of known basicity. The acidity function, which was developed, both theoretically and experimentally, by Louis P. Hammett of Columbia University during the 1930s, has proven useful in the area of physical organic chemistry where it has been used to correlate rates of acid-catalyzed reactions and to quantitate (...)

Eugenics and the Genetic Challenge, Again: All Dressed Up and Just Everywhere to Go.Tom Koch - 2011 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 20 (2):191-203.
Dashiell Hammett’s reaction was “sharp and angry, snarling” when he read, at her request, a work in progress by his friend and lover, Lillian Hellman. “He spoke as if I had betrayed him.” His judgment was absolute and his advice unsparing: “Tear this up and throw it away. It’s worse than bad—it’s half good.” That is exactly what I thought of Matti Häyry’s Rationality and the Genetic Challenge as, for the third time in the evening, I penned a note (...)

The participant’s voice: crowdsourced and undergraduate participants’ views toward ethics consent guidelines.Nadine S. J. Stirling & Melanie K. T. Takarangi - forthcoming - Ethics and Behavior.
The informed consent process presents challenges for psychological trauma research (e.g. Institutional Review Board [IRB] apprehension). While previous research documents researcher and IRB-member perspectives on these challenges, participant views remain absent. Thus, using a mixed-methods approach, we investigated participant views on consent guidelines in two convenience samples: crowdsourced (N = 268) and undergraduate (N = 265) participants. We also examined whether trauma-exposure influenced participant views. Overall, participants were satisfied with current guidelines, providing minor feedback and ethical reminders for researchers. Moreover, (...)

Public spirit and compassion fatigue.Trine Lykkegaard Sønderkær - 2024 - Etikk I Praksis - Nordic Journal of Applied Ethics 1:5-20.
_This paper discusses the concept of compassion fatigue in light of the importance that political decisions, especially the application of the concept of public spirit, have had on care and nursing in a Danish hospital context during the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper is based on recent research literature in the field as well as the author’s own participatory observation study. The paper suggests that nurses already show a sense of public spirit due to their authorization and professional ethics, but at (...)

On the Problem of the Ontology of a Literary Work on the Ontological Dimension of a Work of Art.Sergii S. - 2023 - Philosophy International Journal 6 (1):1-8.
The article is devoted to the search for the nature of the ontology of an art work on the example of a literary work. Tradition viewed a work of art as the discovery of a higher truth. Analytical philosophy deprived literature of the status of truth in general, and thereby deprived it of any ontological dimension. Heidegger’s attempt to return this dimension to literature through its relationship with being did not find continuation in philosophy. The author proposes to consider a (...)

The aim of this talk/paper is to briefly describe the influences on a human being that result in the feelings of helplessness, selfish attachment to objects and/or people, indifference, and a tendency to seek refuge in political, corporate, or religious hierarchies. Man as a social being is today faced with a situation of having to realize his or her personality within a “sick society” that neglects its members and overemphasizes hierarchical structures. The paper also aims at detecting the impact of (...)

In his essay ‘The Simple Art of Murder’, Raymond Chandler describes the world of the American detective story as ‘a world in which gangsters can rule nations and almost rule cities, in which hotels and apartment houses and celebrated restaurants are owned by men who made their money out of brothels, in which a screen star can be the fingerman for a mob, and the nice man down the hall is a boss of the numbers racket; a world where a (...)

    Indivisible Remainder and the Death of Death.Žižek S. - 2022 - Philosophy International Journal 5 (4):1-11.
Hegel’s idealism is generally perceived as a system of rational sublation (Aufhebung) of all empirical contingencies: nothing resists notional mediation which, in a movement of negation of negation, establishes a rational totality. Already Schelling opposed to this complete sublation an “indivisible remainder” of empirical contingency. However, a close reading of Hegel makes it clear that the concluding moment of a dialectical movement of sublation is an empirical remainder which totalizes it, like the body of Christ in Christianity. And the same (...)

The Turn of the Glass Key: Popular Fiction as Reading Strategy.Peter J. Rabinowitz - 1985 - Critical Inquiry 11 (3):418-431.
Even among critics not particularly concerned with detective fiction, Dashiell Hammett’s fourth novel, The Glass Key , is famous for carrying the so-called objective method to almost obsessive lengths: we are never told what the characters are thinking, only what they do and look like. Anyone’s decisions about anyone else’s intentions are interpretive decisions, dependent on correct presuppositions—on having the right interpretive key. The novel’s title, in part, refers to this kind of key. Ned Beaumont, the protagonist, has to (...)

My relationship to the guitar can be characterized by the Friday evening distortion of Kirk Hammett (of Metallica) and Dan Auerbach (of The Black Keys) and Sunday morning’s soaring chords of classical musicians Julian Bream and Rafael Andia to anything in between the rest of the week. Gerçekte(n) öyle mi olmuş?: Post-Truth zamanlarda tarihin temsili.Ahmet Şimşek - 2019 - İstanbul: Yeni İnsan yayınevi. Edited by Sibel Yalı.

Ancient allures the postmodern social subject trapped in the strangeness of time—the time after the end of history. For that time-beaten subject ancient is the unconscious of coherence, predictability, and certainty. Or perhaps that ancient is a glory fled. Whatsoever, ancient is generally sacralized—irrespective of the type of socialization that happened in the past—and journey to the ancient is often deemed to be a pilgrimage. When ideas of the ancient in their individuality and totality inter alia become the natural intellectual (...)
