Medieval Muslim Views of Indian Religions.Yohanan Friedmann - 1975 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 95 (2):214-221.
This article deals with several mediaeval Muslim thinkers who gave sympathetic attention to the religions of India, such as al-Bīrūnī, al-Gardīzī, Amīr Khusraw and Dārā Shukōh. The main part of the paper analyses the thought of the 18th century Indian Muslim thinker Mirzā Maẓhar Jān-i Jānān. Several scholars have maintained that Jān-i Jānān regarded the Hindūs as monotheists and the Vedas as divinely inspired. The conclusion reached here is that this assessment is exaggerated. While Jān-i Jānān concedes that the Hindūs (...)

Rationalization in Religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam.Yohanan Friedmann (ed.) - 2018 - De Gruyter.
Current tendencies in religious studies and theology show a growing interest for the interchange between religions and the cultures of rationalization surrounding them. The studies published in this volume, based on the international conferences of both the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, aim to contribute to this field of interest by dealing with concepts and influences of rationalization in Judaism, Christianity, Islam and religion in general. In addition to taking a closer look at (...)

Does France have an arms export policy?Yohanan Manor - 1974 - Res Publica 16 (5):645-661.
Although taking place mainly in the private sector, the French arms industry is a very tightly controlled activity, and decision making on arms exports are made within a genera! framework which takes info account the chief aspects of France global policy.Mercantile considerations are not the main factor in French arms exports. Actually, France has used very counsciously and systematically its arms exports to further its global policy, especially its ambition to build Europe around itself. However, the effective contribution of these arms (...)

Personal attributes, organizational conditions, and ethical attitudes: a social cognitive approach.Dirk Holtbrügge, Anastasia Baron & Carina B. Friedmann - 2014 - Business Ethics: A European Review 24 (3):264-281.
This paper investigates the impact of personal attributes and organizational conditions on attitudes toward corporate misdeeds. On the basis of social cognitive theory, we develop hypotheses that are tested against data collected from 215 German employees using an online survey. Our findings suggest that personal attributes have a much greater impact on ethical attitudes than organizational conditions. Further, a moderating effect of control-oriented culture on the relationship between personality traits and attitudes toward corporate misdeeds is found. We derive implications for (...)

La Puissance et la sagesse.Georges Friedmann - 1970 - [Paris]: Gallimard.
"Après des années de voyages en divers continents, j'ai éprouvé le besoin d'un "voyage intérieur". On suivra ici les étapes de ce cheminement, jalonnées par les fragments d'une autobiographie que je n'écrirai jamais. On trouvera aussi, communiquées par un homme qui croit connaître ses faiblesses, ses échecs, et ne les cachera pas, quelques réponses appelées par de grandes questions qu'il a tenté de vivre".

Prediction of Hope and Morale During COVID-19.Shaul Kimhi, Yohanan Eshel, Hadas Marciano & Bruria Adini - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The current study uses a repeated measures design to compare two-time points across the COVID-19 pandemic. The first was conducted at the end of the “first wave” [T1] and the second was carried out on October 12-14 2020 in Israel. The participants completed the same questionnaire at both time points. The study examined the predictions of hope and morale at T2 by psychological and demographic predictors at T1. Results indicated the following: The three types of resilience significantly and positively predicted (...)

  30. Gender Bias in Stem Hiring: Implicit In-Group Gender Favoritism Among Men Managers.Enav Friedmann & Dorit Efrat-Treister - 2023 - Gender and Society 37 (1):32-64.
Women’s underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is related to the hierarchical social structure of gender relations in these fields. However, interventions to increase women’s participation have focused primarily on women’s interests rather than on STEM managers’ hiring practices. In this research, we examine STEM hiring practices, explore the implicit bias in criteria used by STEM managers, and suggest possible corrective solutions. Using an experimental design with 213 men and women STEM managers, we show that when evaluating a (...)

Developmental Dyslexia and the Phonological Deficit Hypothesis.Anne Castles & Naama Friedmann - 2014 - Mind and Language 29 (3):270-285.
Dehaene (in Reading in the Brain) reviews and finds support for the phonological deficit hypothesis of developmental dyslexia, which proposes that dyslexics have a basic deficit in processing the constituents of spoken words. This hypothesis can be seen as reflecting three associated claims: a) there is only one basic kind of dyslexia; b) all (or most) dyslexic children have phonological impairments, and c) these phonological impairments cause their dyslexia. We consider each of these claims, and the evidence presented by Dehaene, (...)

    A Deficit in Movement-Derived Sentences in German-Speaking Hearing-Impaired Children.Esther Ruigendijk & Naama Friedmann - 2017 - Frontiers in Psychology 8:184940.
Children with hearing impairment (HI) show disorders in morphology and syntax. The question is whether and how these disorders are connected to problems in the auditory domain. The aim of this paper is to examine whether moderate to severe hearing loss at a young age affects the ability of German-speaking orally trained children to understand and produce sentences. We focused on sentence structures that are derived by syntactic movement, which have been identified as a sensitive marker for syntactic impairment in (...)

Agrammatic comprehension of OVS and OSV structures in hebrew.Na'ama Friedmann - 2000 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 23 (1):33-34.
This commentary brings further support for the Trace Deletion Hypothesis (TDH) from a new study of OVS (Object-Verb-Subject) and OSV (Object-Subject-Verb) sentences in Hebrew, which are active constructions that involve object movement but no change in morphology. The comprehension of these constructions in Broca's aphasia is impaired, and the performance is at chance level, as predicted by the TDH.

An even more universal model of reading: Various effects of orthography on dyslexias.Naama Friedmann & Aviah Gvion - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (5):285-286.
The properties of a specific orthography dictate the way people read it. We bring considerations from dyslexia to suggest that the claim can be extended further. First, the effect of orthographic neighborhood density can be extended beyond letter-position encoding and beyond the orthographic lexicon. Second, Hebrew and Arabic differ with respect to letter forms, and hence, in letter-position encoding.

Modularity in developmental disorders: Evidence from specific language impairment and peripheral dyslexias.Naama Friedmann & Aviah Gvion - 2002 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 25 (6):756-757.
Evidence from various subtypes of Specific Language Impairment and developmental peripheral dyslexias is presented to support the idea that even developmental disorders can be modular. However, in developmental letter position dyslexia and neglect dyslexia we show that additional errors can occur because of insufficient orthographic-lexical knowledge.

    Rousseau's dream: Nature and artifice.John Friedmann - 2002 - Critical Horizons 3 (2):165-176.
'Nature,' can never be for us an objective reality. In one form or another, we must represent the natural world to ourselves, and these representations are both cultural and ideational. It is through them that we respond to nature: intervening by our absences or presence, by our scientific curiosity and artistic expression, by classificatory passion and economic calculus, by practical measures to harness the powers of natural forces and by prayer and magic.
