    Authenticity and Others: Sartre's Ethics of Recognition.T. Storm Heter - 2006 - Sartre Studies International 12 (2):17-43.
This article presents a novel defense of Sartrean ethics based on the concept of interpersonal recognition. The immediate post-war texts Anti-Semite and Jew, What is Literature? and Notebooks for an Ethics express Sartre's inchoate yet ultimately defensible view of obligations to others. Such obligations are not best understood as Kantian duties, but rather as Hegelian obligations of mutual recognition. The emerging portrait of Sartrean ethics offers a strong reply to the classical criticism that authenticity would license vicious lifestyles like serial (...)

Why Everyone Hates Moral Philosophy Professors.T. Storm Heter - 2020-08-27 - In Kimberly S. Engels (ed.), The Good Place and Philosophy. Wiley. pp. 224–235.
Phenomenology, a philosophical movement that takes the firsthand, conscious experience of individuals as its focal point, is a philosophy of the mundane: it reveals ordinary, everyday experience. What makes The Good Place phenomenological is its attention to the banality of space. The appeal to depth is a mainstay of philosophical thinking. Shallowness has been understood as a fault, failure, and deficiency in aesthetics, epistemology, and ethics. The portrayal of Chidi as the philosopher who is unable to commit is the driving (...)

Creolizing Sartre.T. Storm Heter, Kris Sealey & James B. Haile (eds.) - 2023 - Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield.
This book recasts Sartrean existentialism through Caribbean philosophies and the broader philosophies of the Global South. Each author's contribution embodies an aspect of creolizing thinking, understood as the articulation of cultural and conceptual hybridity under conditions of eurocentrism, epistemic colonialism, and the legacies of slavery.

    Sartre after Auschwitz.T. Storm Heter - 2007 - The European Legacy 12 (7):823-833.
This essay investigates Jean-Paul Sartre's reaction to the Holocaust. While Sartre dealt frequently with Jewish themes, he did not explicitly address the question of why the Holocaust occurred or whether and how Western culture would be different in a post-Holocaust world. I claim that although Sartre never addressed the Shoah directly, his Marxist Existentialism provides valuable resources for understanding modern antisemitism. In his major postwar writings he developed the concepts of political engagement, authenticity and responsibility for systematic social harms. Sartre's (...)

The Sonic Gaze: Jazz, Whiteness, and Racialized Listening.T. Storm Heter - 2022 - Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
This book argues that whiteness is not only a visual orientation; it is a way of hearing. Inspired by the understandings of race and whiteness in the existential writings of Fanon, Beauvoir, Sartre, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Angela Davis, this book introduces students to the notion of the white sonic gaze.

The Godfather and Philosophy is comprised of twenty-eight chapters by philosophers, who reflect upon the ethical and metaphysical issues raised in The Godfather novels and movies, beginning with the 1969 novel by Mario Puzo and the 1972 movie by Francis Ford Coppola. The Godfather saga has had a profound impact on American cinema, storytelling, thinking about crime, and popular culture. Aimed at thoughtful fans of The Godfather franchise, among the questions tackled in these provocative philosophical chapters are the immigrant experience (...)

Could Ancient Ships Work to Windward?T. Rice Holmes - 1909 - Classical Quarterly 3 (01):26-.
When Caesar sailed to Britain in 55 b.c. he was obliged to leave behind eighteen transports which had his cavalry on board and had been prevented by adverse winds from joining the rest of the fleet. These vessels, like those which carried the infantry, were of native Gallic build, and were doubtless sailed by Gallic seamen, who were familiar with the conditions of navigation in the Channel. On the fourth day after Caesar landed in Britain they set sail with a (...)

Science at the tower of babel.T. Swann Harding - 1938 - Philosophy of Science 5 (3):338-353.
The eleventh chapter of Genesis significantly begins to the following effect: “And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.” In that one language there was power. That power induced the inhabitants of earth to start the Tower of Babel with the idea of storming the citadel of Heaven. Whereupon, we learn, God confounded their language that they might not understand one another's speech. That confusion of tongues destroyed their power.

The case of Mrs A is a provocative example of euthanasia by advance directive to avoid increasingly severe dementia. It is also a ‘perfect storm’ of a disturbing case, revealing both the challenges that can arise with advance euthanasia directives generally and particular issues in the Dutch procedures. Kim, Miller and Dresser have done a distinct service to bioethics in detailing the case, in explaining the basis of the regional euthanasia review committee reprimand of the administering geriatrician and in (...)

Over the past generation, the rise of East Asia and especially China, has brought about a sea change in the economic and political world order. At the same time, global warming, environmental degradation, food and water shortages, population explosion, and income inequities have created a perfect storm that threatens the very survival of humanity. It is clear now that the Westphalian model of individual sovereign states seeking their own self-interest will not be able to respond effectively to this win-win (...)

Internalizing and externalizing pathways to high-risk substance use and geographic location in Australian adolescents.Bailey M. Willis, Phereby P. Kersh, Christy M. Buchanan & Veronica T. Cole - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
One specific instantiation of the storm-and-stress view of adolescence is the idea that “normal” adolescence involves high-risk substance use behaviors. However, although uptake of some substance use behaviors is more common during adolescence than other life stages, it is clear that not all adolescents engage in risky substance use—and among those who do, there is much variation in emotional, behavioral, and contextual precursors of this behavior. One such set of predictors forms the internalizing pathway to substance use disorder, whereby (...)

Riders in the Storm: Ethics in an Age of Climate Change.Brian G. Henning - 2015 - Anselm Academic.
With the increase of natural disasters, droughts, and superstorms, it’s clear that climate change isn’t coming—it’s here. The ecological crisis of climate change—and how we handle it—is the challenge of this century. Though policy changes or technological advances may help, they’re not enough. We are in need of new ways of thinking and acting; new ways of understanding our relationship to the world. Riders in the Storm assesses the challenges of climate change through an interdisciplinary study, examining the basic (...)

There are many ways to avoid responsibility, for example, explaining what happens as the work of the gods, fate, society, or the system. For engineers, “technology” or “the organization” will serve this purpose quite well. We may distinguish at least nine (related) senses of “responsibility”, the most important of which are: (a) responsibility-as-causation (the storm is responsible for flooding), (b) responsibility-as-liability (he is the person responsible and will have to pay), (c) responsibility-as-competency (he’s a responsible person, that is, he’s (...)

The Experience of Childhood and the Learning Society: Allowing the Child to be Philosophical and Philosophy to be Childish.Thomas Storme & Joris Vlieghe - 2011 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 45 (2):183-198.
Both ‘philosophy’ and ‘the child’ are notions that seem to have an everlasting presence in our daily vocabulary. What is less common and perhaps lacking is any reflection on the relation between them, which is rarely a focus of the researcher’s attention. We believe that it is precisely this relation that is at stake in increasingly popular notions such as ‘philosophy for/with children’, or even in philosophy of education as such. In this article we will expand upon this claim by (...)

The Man In The High Castle And Philosophy: Subversive Reports from another Reality.Bruce Krajewski & Joshua Heter (eds.) - 2017 - Open Court.
The Man in the High Castle is an Amazon TV show, based on the Philip K. Dick novel, about an "alternate present" (beginning in the 1960s) in which Germany and Japan won World War II, with the former Western US occupied by Japan, the former Eastern U.S. occupied by Nazi Germany, and a small "neutral zone" between them. A theme of the story is that in this alternative world there is eager speculation, fueled by the illicit newsreel, The Grasshopper Lies (...)

Metamodernism: The Future of Theory.Jason Ananda Josephson Storm - 2021 - University of Chicago Press.
For decades, scholars have been calling into question the universality of disciplinary objects and categories. The coherence of defined autonomous categories—such as religion, science, and art—has collapsed under the weight of postmodern critiques, calling into question the possibility of progress and even the value of knowledge. Jason Ānanda Josephson Storm aims to radicalize and move beyond these deconstructive projects to offer a path forward for the humanities and social sciences using a new model for theory he calls metamodernism. Metamodernism (...)

Logic is traditionally considered to be a purely syntactic discipline, at least in principle. However, prof. David Isles has shown that this ideal is not yet met in traditional logic. Semantic residue is present in the assumption that the domain of a variable should be fixed in advance of a derivation, and also in the notion that a numerical notation must refer to a number rather than be considered a mathematical object in and of itself. Based on his work, the (...)

The decay of master narratives showcases a distrust of universals, while deepening particularity seems to promise nothing but further dissolution. For Jason Josephson-Storm, these are dead ends. He wants to offer a path forward, which he terms metamodernism.
