J. Habermas hat vor kurzem eine Konsenstheorie der Wahrheit in ihren Grundzügen skizziert, die er ausdrücklich als notwendige Alternative zu der s. E. unhaltbaren realistischen Korrespondenztheorie der Wahrheit versteht. In einer Kritik der Habermasschen Konsenstheorie wird jedoch zu zeigen versucht, daß die Plausibilität dieser Theorie gerade auf der Inanspruchnahme nicht explizit gemachter realistischer Voraussetzungen beruht. Es wird argumentiert, daß sich realistische Prämissen in den Habermasschen Überlegungen ebenso in der Explikation des Begriffs "Konsenstheorie" nachweisen lassen wie in der Annahme nicht-konventioneller Methoden (...) zur Überprüfung empirischer Aussagen und in der Verwendung des Begriffs Kompetenz ebenso wie in der Theorie der idealen Sprech-situation. The crucial point of the mind-body-problem appears to be that mental phenome- na (events, properties, states) seem to have features which at first sight make it impossible to integrate these phenomena into a naturalistic world view, i.e. to identify them with, or to reduce them to, physical phenomena.1 In the contemp- orary discussion, there are mainly two critical features which are important in this context. The first of these is the feature of intentional states, e.g. beliefs and desires, to have (...) a representational or semantic content. The problem of the naturalization of these states I will call the problem of intentionality. The second critical feature is the property of other mental states, e.g. perceptions and sensations, to have a qualitative aspect, i.e. that it is somehow, or feels in a characteristic way, to be in one of those states. For many years some critically engaged German sociologists have challenged Logical Positivism with the criticism that Positivism’s allegedly neutral conception of science in fact supports conservative or even reactionary political movements. This line of criticism is due, at last in part, to the fact that German scientists became acquainted with the positivistic branch of analytical philosophy after World War II almost exclusively through the works of the liberal-conservative K. R. Popper. Popper, however, is by no means representative of all Positivists. (...) There were influential members of the Vienna Circle who saw a direct connection between the aims of the „scientific world view“ and the endeavour to renew the society on the basis of rational, i.e. socialistic, principles. This connection becomes especially clear in the manifesto Wissenschaftliche Weltauffassung − Der Wiener Kreis which was published in 1929 by Carnap, Hahn and Neurath. (shrink)

Ansgar Beckermann Once, a mind-body theory based upon the idea of supervenience seemed to be a promising alternative to the various kinds of reductionistic physicalism. In recent years, however, Jaegwon Kim has subjected his own brainchild to a very thorough criticism. With most of Kim’s arguments I agree wholeheartedly - not least because they converge with my own thoughts.² In order to explain the few points of divergence with Kim’s views, I shall have to prepare the ground a (...) little. In the course of this paper I will therefore do two things: At the start, I will try to sketch the logical topography of the „solution space“ of the problem Kim is concerned with. As a second step, I shall then comment on the concepts of identity, realization and reduction and attempt to show that Kim’s concept of realization is too narrow, because he is still very much in the grip of the traditional view with regard to what it means to show that a property _F _is identical with, or realized by, another property _G_. In this paper the author tries to disentangle some of the problems tied up in John Searle's famous Chinese-room-argument. In a first step to answer the question what it would be for a system to have not only syntax, but also semantics the author gives a brief account of the functioning of the language understanding systems (LUS) so far developed in the framework of AI research thereby making clear that systems like Winograd's SHRDLU are indeed doing little more than mere (...) number crunching. But things would be entirely different, the author argues, if the database of a LUS were built up by the system itself via some perceptual component-at least, if this perceptual component had the capacity to distinguish objects having a certain property F from objects which do not. For in this case the system could store an internal representation of the fact that the object has the property F in its database if and only if the object in fact has that property. And this would be a good basis for calling such a system a genuine LUS. But Searle has objected to a very similar account of J. Fodor that nothing could be further from true language understanding. The reason for this complaint seems to be that Searle holds the view that a true LUS must e.g., know that the word hamburgers refers to hamburgers and that he moreover claims that this knowledge must be explicit or that the system must be aware of the reference of hamburgers to hamburgers. The author argues that this is asking too much. For it seems plausible to say that a system is able to understand e.g., the word hamburger even if it has only implicit knowledge of the fact that hamburger refers to hamburgers in the sense that it has the capacity to tell hamburgers from non hamburgers and the capacity to bring the word hamburger together just with objects of the former kind. In seinem Beitrag Was bleibt von der Analytischen Philosophie? hat Peter Bieri all das aufgelistet, was ihm an der gegenwärtigen Analytischen Philosophie missfällt. In dieser Replik wird erstens die Geschichte der Analytischen Philosophie in Erinnerung gerufen. Zweitens wird in Auseinandersetzung mit Bieris Kritik folgendes Bild von Philosophie entworfen: Es gibt überdauernde philosophische Fragen, und Philosophie sollte nicht als ein essayistisches Unternehmen, sondern als der systematische Versuch verstanden werden, Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Allerdings lassen sich philosophische Fragen niemals definitiv (...) beantworten; deshalb kann das Ziel nur sein, einen möglichst vollständigen Überblick über die verschiedenen Antworten zu geben und dabei zugleich klar zu machen, was für und was gegen diese Antworten spricht. In his paper "Machines and the Mental" Fred Dretske claims that there is a difference on principle between men on the one and animals and machines on the other side which arises from the fact that men are able to respond to the meaning of symbols whereas animals and machines can only respond to the symbols that have the meaning. In this paper it is argued that this claim does not bear closer scrutiny. Mainly for two reasons: 1. The mere (...) having of a certain meaning does not rank among the possible causal properties of a symbol, not even in the case of men; for it is not the having of the meaning that may have certain effects on the behavior of a person, but the fact that the person associates this meaning with the symbol. 2. Even animals are capable to associate a meaning with a symbol, i. e. even animals can learn to come to believe that p if they become aware of a symbol which has the meaning that p. (shrink)

Das logische Problem des Übels gilt weitgehend als gelöst, weil es zumindest logisch möglich zu sein scheint, dass alles Leid und jeder Schmerz in der Welt zur Erlangung von höherwertigen Gütern logisch notwendig ist. Doch diese Sicht ist widerlegt, wenn es auch nur einen einzigen Schmerz oder ein einziges Leid gibt, bei dem es nicht möglich ist, dass dieser Schmerz oder dieses Leid zur Erlangung eines höherwertigen Gutes logisch notwendig ist. Und die Aussichten, einen solchen Fall zu finden, sind nicht (...) schlecht. Wenn Kant Recht hat, dass Menschen niemals nur als Mittel gebraucht werden dürfen, ist z.B. jedes Leid und jeder Tod eines unschuldigen Kindes durch kein Gut der Welt zu rechtfertigen. Jedes Wesen, das den Tod eines solchen Kindes um eines anderen Zieles willen in Kauf nimmt, handelt unmoralisch und kann daher nicht im christlichen Sinne allmächtig, allwissend und allgütig sein.Many philosophers think that the logical problem of evil is dissolved since it is at least logically possible that all pain and all suffering in this world is logically necessary for the attainment of a more valuable good. This view, however, is refuted if there is at least one pain or one suffering that can be shown not to be logically necessary for the attainment of a more valuable good. And the prospects for finding such an evil are not bad. If Kant is right that no person is ever be treated only as a means the suffering and death of an innocent child cannot be justified by any good in the world. A being who accepts the death of an innocent child for the attainment of whatever good is acting immorally and, therefore, cannot be all-powerful, all-knowing and supremely good as the Christian god is supposed to be. Der Band wurde sachlich überarbeitet und nach didaktischen Gesichtspunkten neu strukturiert. Das Werk ist für Studienanfänger wie für Studierende mit mathematischen Vorkenntnissen oder mit Kenntnis formaler Semantik gleichermaßen mit Gewinn zu lesen. Übungsaufgaben erschließen den Stoff.

Unter Berufung auf Aristoteles ist in der neueren Literatur immer wieder die These vertreten worden, die Konklusionen praktische Syllogismen seien keine Sätze, sondern Handlungen. Eine genaue Interpretation der entsprechenden Aristotelesstellen zeigt jedoch, daß nach Aristoteles Handlungen nicht aus bestimmten Prämissen folgen, sondern aus dem Fürwahrhalten dieser Prämissen. Deshalb wird hier vorgeschlagen, praktische Syllogismen als epistemisch-praxeologische Schlüsse im Rahmen einer gemischten Wissens — und Handlungslogik aufzufassen. Wenn man von den normalen Begriffen des Wissens und Handelns ausgeht, ergibt sich bei dieser Interpretation (...) jedoch, daß die Gültigkeit praktischer Schlüsse durchaus fraglich ist. (shrink)

Wenn man in Lehrbüchern und einschlägigen Lexika nach einer Charakterisierung der Erkenntnistheorie sucht, findet man eine große Übereinstimmung im Hinblick auf die Grundfragen dieser Disziplin. Im ersten Band der von Jürgen Mittelstraß herausgegebenen Enzyklopädie Philosophie und Wissenschaftstheorie etwa findet sich folgender Eintrag: Erkenntnistheorie (!), philosophische Grunddisziplin, deren Gegenstand die Beantwortung der Frage nach den Bedingungen begründeten Wissens ist. Im klassischen Sinne schloß dies die Fragen nach der Entstehung, dem Wesen und den Grenzen der Erkenntnis ein ('die Wissenschaft vom Wesen und (...) den Prinzipien der Erkenntnis, vom [logischen] Ursprung, den Quellen, Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen, vom Umfang, von den Grenzen der Erkenntnis', R. Eisler, Wörterbuch der philos. Begriffe 1, Berlin, 41927, 389). (576f.) Und im neuesten Standardwerk, der von Edward Craig herausgegebenen Rout- ledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, schreibt Peter Klein. (shrink)

According to Darwin, humans, just like other organisms, are not created by any special act. All organisms arise by natural processes from inanimate matter. Humans are no exception. But can it really be the case that even humans are ‘only’ animals – natural beings which (a) are completely made up of natural parts (in the end, of macro-molecules which themselves consist of atoms), and for which it is (b) true that all processes that occur within them are physico-chemical processes? In (...) recent years some German philosophers (e.g. Habermas and Wingert) have argued that man “is elevated above nature by his capacity for deliberation and his ability to judge and comprehend meanings” (Singer and Wingert 2003, 11). Does this mean that humans are ‘supernatural’ in some way or other? My aim is twofold. Firstly, I point out that even non-human animals to a certain extent have the capacity to deliberate and act for reasons. Secondly, I argue that one can also put forward theoretical considerations in favour of the thesis that entirely natural beings may have this capacity. Thus, my answer to the question of what parts of our accustomed views of humanity and the world must we abandon if even we humans are ‘only’ animals is: nothing or at any rate very little. At least, even if we humans are ‘only’ animals, we may have the capacity for deliberation and the ability to judge and comprehend meanings. (shrink)

In einer Kritik der Hempelschen Erklärungstheorie hat W. Stegmüller gezeigt, daß zur Erklärung nur die "wirklichen Realgründe", also die Ursachen eines Ereignisses herangegezogen werden können, und W. C. Salmon hat darauf aufmerksam gemacht, daß in Erklärungen nur relevante Faktoren angeführt werden dürfen. Für die Theorie der wissenschaftlichen Erklärung ist daher heute die probabilistische Kausalitätstheorie von P. Suppes besonders interessant; denn Suppes versucht, den Begriff der Ursache statistisch zu fassen und auf den Begriff der statistischen Relevanz zurückzuführen. In diesem Aufsatz werden (...) deshalb die Grundzüge der Kausalitätstheorie von Suppes dargestellt und diskutiert. Dabei ergibt sich zunächst, daß Suppes' eigene Formulierung dieser Theorie nicht adäquat ist, da in ihr die Carnapsche Forderung des Gesamtdatums nicht hinreichend berücksichtigt wird. Diese Schwierigkeit kann jedoch überwunden werden, wenn man den Begriff der "kausalen Abschirmung" bzw. der "nur scheinbaren Ursache" - in engerer Anlehnung an die Überlegungen Salmons - etwas anders definiert als Suppes und wenn man darüberhinaus bei der Beurteilung der statistischen Relevanz einzelner Faktoren jeweils die Menge aller für ein gegebenes Ereignis statistisch relevanten Ereignisse berücksichtigt. Zum Abschluß wird kurz die Frage aufgeworfen, inwieweit es überhaupt sinnvoll sein kann, den Begriff der Kausalität statistisch zu definieren. Es wird argumentiert, daß sich diese Frage nicht definitiv beantworten läßt, da in diesem Zusammenhang Konventionen eine entscheidende Rolle spielen, daß es jedoch einige - wenn auch eher intuitive - Argumente gegen statistische Kausalitätstheorien gibt, die es wahrscheinlich machen, daß z. B. die Überlegungen J. L. Mackies zum Begriff der Kausalität unserem alltagssprachlichen Begriff der Verursachung sehr viel mehr gerecht werden als die Überlegungen von Suppes. (shrink)

Können Gründe Ursachen unseres Handelns sein? Wenn man Gründe als Paare von Überzeugungen und Wünschen auffasst, spricht viel dafür, dass das so ist. Aber wie ist es, wenn man Gründe als Tatsachen in der Welt auffasst, die dafür sprechen, eine bestimmte Handlung auszuführen? Manche sagen, dass es zumindest für freie Handlungen keine hinreichenden Ursachen geben kann. Egal wie die Welt beschaffen ist, egal zu welchen Ergebnissen die Überlegungen einer Handelnden geführt haben, sie kann sich immer so und auch anders entscheiden. (...) Hinter dieser Auffassung steht eine Auffassung Handelns, der zufolge dieses Handeln darin besteht, dass die Handelnde akteurskausal bestimmte Bewegungen verursacht. Diese Auffassung ist unhaltbar. Handlungen beruhen auf Entscheidungen, die oft auf Prozesse des Überlegens zurückgehen, die ihrerseits auch durch Tatsachen in der Welt angestoßen werden, die für die Ausführung einer Handlung sprechen. Zumindest de facto kommt es oft vor, dass diese Prozesse mit kausaler Notwendigkeit zu einer bestimmten Entscheidung und damit auch zu einer bestimmten Handlung führen. D. h., zumindest in manchen Fällen sind auch Tatsachen, die für die Ausführung einer Handlung sprechen, – nicht allein, aber zusammen mit anderen Umständen – Ursachen von Handlungen. (shrink)

This article is a reply to the comments on my book Gehirn, Ich, Freiheit by Geert Keil, Jasper Liptow and Gerson Reuter. My main concern is to show that we humans may be free and responsible even if we are thoroughly natural beings. But what exactly is a thoroughly natural being? In section 1, I try to answer this question by elaborating in more detail what, in my view, naturalism amounts to. In sections 2 and 5, I address the question (...) what it may mean for natural beings to be able to act or decide otherwise. In section 3, I distinguish two versions of libertarianism which I call,standard‘ and,non-standard libertarianism‘; furthermore I explain some of the main problems non-standard libertarians are confronted with. Section 4 is devoted to Geert Keil’s version of non-standard libertarianism. My main objection to this theory is that Keil has so far given no answer to the questions why a process of deliberation ends when it ends and what it may mean that a person is able to continue deliberating.
