A USSR-wide seminar of teachers of the fundamentals of scientific atheism was held at Moscow State University from March 14 to 17, 1972. The seminar was organized by the USSR Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education. Personnel holding posts of responsibility in the machinery of the Central Committee of the CPSU, in the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education, Party and scientific workers, and graduate and undergraduate students specializing in the history and theory of atheism took active part (...) in its work. Substance use disorders (SUDs) constitute a growing global health crisis, yet many limitations and challenges exist in SUD treatment research, including the lack of objective brain-based markers for tracking treatment outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) is a neurophysiological technique for measuring brain activity, and although much is known about EEG activity in acute and chronic substance use, knowledge regarding EEG in relation to abstinence and treatment outcomes is sparse. We performed a scoping review of longitudinal and pre-post treatment EEG studies that explored (...) putative changes in brain function associated with abstinence and/or treatment in individuals with SUD. Following PRISMA guidelines, we identified studies published between January 2000 and March 2022 from online databases. Search keywords included EEG, addictive substances (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, methamphetamine), and treatment related terms (e.g., abstinence, relapse). Selected studies used EEG at least at one time point as a predictor of abstinence or other treatment-related outcomes; or examined pre- vs. post-SUD intervention (brain stimulation, pharmacological, behavioral) EEG effects. Studies were also rated on the risk of bias and quality using validated instruments. Forty-four studies met the inclusion criteria. More consistent findings included lower oddball P3 and higher resting beta at baseline predicting negative outcomes, and abstinence-mediated longitudinal decrease in cue-elicited P3 amplitude and resting beta power. Other findings included abstinence or treatment-related changes in late positive potential (LPP) and N2 amplitudes, as well as in delta and theta power. Existing studies were heterogeneous and limited in terms of specific substances of interest, brief times for follow-ups, and inconsistent or sparse results. Encouragingly, in this limited but maturing literature, many studies demonstrated partial associations of EEG markers with abstinence, treatment outcomes, or pre-post treatment-effects. Studies were generally of good quality in terms of risk of bias. More EEG studies are warranted to better understand abstinence- or treatment-mediated neural changes or to predict SUD treatment outcomes. Future research can benefit from prospective large-sample cohorts and the use of standardized methods such as task batteries. EEG markers elucidating the temporal dynamics of changes in brain function related to abstinence and/or treatment may enable evidence-based planning for more effective and targeted treatments, potentially pre-empting relapse or minimizing negative lifespan effects of SUD. It raises the question, how grammar relates to our remarkable ability to cooperate for future needs and how our thought process is related to grammatical parameters.

Tematyka pracy sytuuje się na pograniczu teorii psychologii i teorii języka. Celem jej jest pokazanie niespójności i niewspółmierności dwóch stylów myślenia o człowieku - kartezjańskiego i postfreudowskiego. Świadomość, tożsamość indywidualna, wolna wola, odpowiedzialność, intencjonalność, myśl - tworzą jeden zespół pojęć powiązanych ze sobą, a charakteryzujący kartezjanizm. Natomiast nieświadomość, automatyzm, determinizm, rekurencyjność - stanowią pojęciowy oręż freudyzmu. Nieświadomość jest w tej konwencji stanem pośredniczącym między mną a drugim. Autor twierdzi, że teksty Z. Freuda są dla współczesnych takimi samymi „narzędziami" inspiracji, jakim (...) niegdyś dla nowożytnych były teksty R. Descartes'a. Książka ma charakter rekonstrukcyjny, a działanie jej autora to w znacznej mierze praca detektywa, polega bowiem na wyśledzeniu i odkryciu inspiracji oraz korekt lub uściśleń, jakie współcześni myśliciele próbują odkryciu Freuda narzucić. Książka ma na celu wskazanie problemów filozoficznych w ramach empirystycznie zorientowanej dziś psychologii. Po pierwsze, autor stara się wykazać, że psychologia wraz ze swym klasycznym problemem ciała i umysłu jest produktem nowożytnym, tj. rodzi się wraz z tekstami Kartezjusza. Po drugie, autor krytycznie odnosi się do dwóch istotnych rozwinięć kartezjanizmu, tj. introspekcjonizmu i fenomenologii. Te¬mu pierwszemu zarzuca sprzeczność pomiędzy założeniami ontologicznymi (dyrektywa paralelizmu psychofizycznego) a praktyką badawczą (naturalizm epistemologiczny i fenomenalizm), fenomenologii zaś niekonsekwencję w ujęciu problemu świadomości. Łącząc te dwie krytyki autor stara się zburzyć zaufanie do równania: „psychiczne = świadome". Świadomość, że psychologia powinna odszukać inny od świadomości przedmiot badań, stanowi przesłankę główną poszukiwań intelektualnych zawartych w książce. Autor zwraca się w kierunku myślenia antykartezjańskiego, tj. psychoanalizy i kognitywistyki. Z tekstów S. Freuda autor stara się wyłuskać spójną teorię aparatu psychicznego. Tu jednak natrafia na pęknięcie, na pewną dwuznaczność; ów aparat można bowiem interpretować dwojako: albo jako system reprezentacji, albo jako maszynę. (shrink)

In art and literature, animals appear not only as an allegoric representation but as a reference which troubles the border between humanity and animality. The aim of this book is to challenge traditional ways of confronting animality with humanity and to consider how the Darwinian turn has modified this relationship in postmodern narratives. The subject of animality in culture, ethics, philosophy, art and literature is explored and reevaluated, and a host of questions regarding the conditions of co-existence of humans and (...) animals is asked: Should discourse ethics now include entities that initially seemed mute and were excluded from discussions? Does the modern animal rights movement need a theology, and vice versa, is there a theology that needs animals? Are animals in literature just metaphors of human characters, or do they reveal something more profound, a direction of human desires, or a fantasy of transgressing humanity? The aim of this study is to examine whether gender diversity on audit committees influences financial reporting quality by using panel data of Spanish listed firms. The financial reporting quality of firms is measured by the type of opinion received in the audit report. We estimate various panel data models of audit opinions and control for factors that are traditionally found to impact audit opinions. This study provides evidence to support the hypotheses that the percentage of females on ACs reduces (...) the probability of qualifications due to errors, non-compliance or the omission of information. Furthermore, the results also find that the percentage of female directors on ACs, the percentage of independent female directors on ACs and ACs chaired by females increase the likelihood of further transparency by disclosing audit reports with uncertainties and scope limitation qualifications. In this chapter, we consider a posthumanist critique of international law in relation to the material world. Our perspective on posthumanism and international law is framed by a monument of Edward Gibbon Wakefield, the so-called ‘founding father’ of the colony of South Australia. Centering the monument in our dialogue, we discuss two types of materialism: New materialism and historical materialism. We argue that an engagement with new and old materialism opens possibilities for a critical engagement with posthumanism. Central to this (...) critical engagement are themes of materiality, settler colonialism, agency, and exploitation – themes that are key for understanding the operation of international law. By identifying where the materialist theories differ, and also where they converge, we ultimately seek to identify the utility of a posthumanist critique for destabilising international law’s imperialist, capitalist, racialized and patriarchal structures. The aim of this research is to examine what impact female institutional directors on boards have on corporate performance. Previous research shows that institutional female directors cannot be considered as a homogeneous group since they represent investors who may or may not maintain business relations with the companies on whose corporate boards they sit. Thus, it is not only the effect of female institutional directors as a whole on firm value that has been analysed, but also the impact of pressure-resistant (...) female directors, who represent institutional investors that only invest in the company, and do not maintain a business relation with the firm. We hypothesize that there is a non-linear association, specifically quadratic, between institutional and pressure-resistant female directors on boards and corporate performance. Our results report that female institutional directors on boards enhance corporate performance, but when they reach a certain threshold on boards, firm value decreases. In line with female institutional directors, pressure-resistant female directors on boards also increase firm value, but only up to a certain figure, above which they have a negative impact on firm performance. These findings are consistent with an inverted U-shaped relationship between female institutional directors and pressure-resistant female directors and firm performance. (shrink)

Alles, was in uns Gewicht hat, ist im Ursprung Liebe.« Und von dem Physiker Hans-Peter Dürr stammt der Satz: »Liebe ist für mich Urquell des Kosmos.« Kaum ein Wort wird häufiger in den Mund genommen als »Liebe«. Ohne Zweifel ist sie die bewegende Macht im menschlichen Leben; aber wer weiß schon, was »Liebe« wirklich ist? Liebe hat zwar mit Gefühl zu tun, und doch ist (...) sie nicht auf dieses reduzierbar. So bringt die Philosophie die Liebe sogar mit dem Sein in Zusammenhang, und für christliches Denken ist die Aussage, dass Gott die Liebe ist, von zentraler Bedeutung. Der vorliegende Band versucht, sich dem »Geheimnis« der Liebe transdisziplinär zu nähern, indem in einem ersten Teil philosophische Konzepte vorgestellt werden, in einem zweiten dem Phänomen theologisch nachgegangen wird, bevor in einem dritten Teil aus einzelwissenschaftlicher Perspektive (Pädagogik, Soziologie, Psychologie, Neurowissenschaft und Evolutionsbiologie) das Thema erhellt wird. Psychedelics have been recognized as model interventions for studying altered states of consciousness. However, few empirical studies of the shamanic state of consciousness, which is anecdotally similar to the psychedelic state, exist. We investigated the neural correlates of shamanic trance using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) in 24 shamanic practitioners and 24 healthy controls during rest, shamanic drumming, and classical music listening, followed by an assessment of altered states of consciousness. EEG data were used to assess changes in absolute power, connectivity, signal (...) diversity, and criticality, which were correlated with assessment measures. We also compared assessment scores to those of individuals in a previous study under the influence of psychedelics. Shamanic practitioners were significantly different from controls in several domains of altered states of consciousness, with scores comparable to or exceeding that of healthy volunteers under the influence of psychedelics. Practitioners also displayed increased gamma power during drumming that positively correlated with elementary visual alterations. Furthermore, shamanic practitioners had decreased low alpha and increased low beta connectivity during drumming and classical music and decreased neural signal diversity in the gamma band during drumming that inversely correlated with insightfulness. Finally, criticality in practitioners was increased during drumming in the low and high beta and gamma bands, with increases in the low beta band correlating with complex imagery and elementary visual alterations. These findings suggest that psychedelic drug-induced and non-pharmacologic alterations in consciousness have overlapping phenomenal traits but are distinct states of consciousness, as reflected by the unique brain-related changes during shamanic trance compared to previous literature investigating the psychedelic state. It discusses a new way to tackle the problem of language modeling, and provides clues on how the close relation between natural language and some biological structures can be very fruitful for science. The book examines the theoretical framework and then applies its main principles to various areas of linguistics. It discusses applications in language contact, language change, diachronic linguistics, and the potential enhancement of classical (...) approaches to historical linguistics by means of new methodologies used in physics, biology, and agent systems theory. It shows how studying language evolution and change using computational simulations enables to integrate social structures in the evolution of language, and how this can give rise to a new way to approach sociolinguistics. This paper explores the practices of auditors in a non-Western cultural environment. Drawing on Alasdair MacIntyre’s virtue ethics framework and narrative interviews with twenty Tunisian auditors, we investigate how auditors reconcile their duty to independence with the expectations of a kinship economy. Additionally, we explore how institutions—such as professional oversight bodies—play into this reconciliation. We find that, although auditors may pursue a telos at odds with international auditing standards, the purpose that these auditors serve is congruent with their moral tradition. (...) That is, rather than positioning themselves as objective arbiters of financial reporting, these auditors position themselves as guardians of their auditees. While this revised position engenders conduct that may appear to violate their independence, our auditors’ practices are congruent with the virtues of justice, courage, and honesty, as they conceive of them in the context of a Tunisian moral tradition. This study makes two main contributions to the literature. First, we provide empirical evidence into the ways in which auditors redefine independence in the context of a kinship economy. Second, we demonstrate that, when auditing local firms, auditors apply a version of professionalism that emphasizes community-oriented care over objectivity. (shrink)

El objetivo de esta propuesta consistirá en desarrollar una experiencia piloto donde nuestros estudiantes a través del aprendizaje cooperativo formen equipos de trabajo agrupados según el test Riso-Hudson (1999) garantice el máximo rendimiento. Como resultado se ofrecerá una medida de la rentabilidad que aporta la (...) incorporación de la sostenibilidad en los proyectos de inversión empresariales a la par que la creación de valor sostenible. This text provides a comprehensive analysis of historical archives, letters, and primary sources to offer unique insight into how Fröbel's pedagogy of kindergarten and play has been understood, interpreted, and modified throughout history and in particular, as a consequence of it's adoption in the US. Tracing the development, modification, and global spread of the kindergarten movement, this volume demonstrates the far-reaching impacts of Fröbel's work, and asks how far contemporary understandings of the kindergarten pedagogy reflect the educationalist's original intentions. Recognizing (...) that Fröbel's pedagogy has at times been simplified or misunderstood, the book tackles issues caused by translation, or transfer to non-German speaking countries such as the US, and so demonstrates how and why contemporary research and Froebelian practice is in the danger of diverging from the original ideas expressed in Fröbel's work. By returning to original documents produced by Fröbel, Wasmuth traces various interpretations, and explains how and why some of these understandings established themselves in the context of US Early Childhood Education, whilst others did not. How could we then explain why Nespolo’s stage costumes and scenery perfecty fit? By clarifying the kind of object Madama Butterfly is.

Alex Byrne and Jordi Fernández propose two different versions of a transparency theory of self-knowledge. According to Byrne, we self-attribute beliefs by an inference from what we take to be facts about the world (following a rule he calls BEL). According to Fernández, we self-attribute the belief that p on the basis of a prior mental state, a state which constitutes our grounds for the belief that p (thereby realizing a procedure he calls Bypass). In this paper, I present the (...) two theories in outline and discuss various objections concerning their normative (Can the procedure give us knowledge?) and metaphysical aspects (Is the procedure functional?). I conclude that especially the metaphysical objections against Bypass are somewhat more difficult to counter than those against BEL and that the modifications required of Fernández’s theory make it very similar to Byrne’s. -/- Alex Byrne y Jordi Fernández proponen dos diferentes versiones de la teoría de la transparencia del autoconocimiento. Según Byrne, para autoatribuir creencias inferimos qué es lo que creemos a partir lo que tomamos como hechos sobre el mundo (siguiendo una regla que Byrne llama BEL). Según Fernández, autoatribuimos la creencia de que p con base en un estado anterior a esta creencia, un estado que fundamenta la creencia de que p (realizando un procedimiento que él llama Bypass). En este artículo expongo las dos teorías y discuto objeciones que conciernen su aspecto normativo (¿puede el procedimiento darnos conocimiento?) y metafísico (¿es funcional el procedimiento?). Concluyo que en especial las objeciones metafísicas son más graves en el caso de Bypass que en el de BEL y que las modificaciones requeridas de la teoría de Fernández la asemejan mucho a la de Byrne. Avtor teksta reflektira nekatera najprodornejša teoretska izhodišča kritikov koncepta evropskega humanizma kot nekonfliktnega etičnega načela. Obenem na primeru tematizacije odnosa multikulturalizma in interkulturalizma napeljuje na nekatere ključne točke v povzemanju rasističnega diskurza visokega humanizma v tipični lokalni in periferni vsebini. Avtor opozarja na orientalizacijo govorice lokalnega sistema na robu balkanskega spopada. V prvi vrsti gre za opozorilo na tipično reakcijo majhnega sistema na periferiji entitete, katere stalna avto-rekonstrukcija in avtoinvencija že dve tisočletji ostalemu svetu sporočata, da so evropske vrednote in (...) resnica univerzalne.
