Teachers in inclusive schools are often faced with the challenge of providing appropriate educational experiences for classes of students with abilities ranging from gifted to severely learning disabled. This challenge can be addressed either by the individual teacher or by a whole school approach. This paper reports on a study of the responses of teachers and parents to a trial of 'cluster grouping', as a model for meeting the educational needs of exceptional students. Data were gathered from teachers and parents (...) by questionnaire. The results remind us that there are factors, other than the strengths and weaknesses of a particular model, that can influence success. (shrink)

These past few days, I have been reading a transcript of your speech at the Military Academy on 18 September [1966] and, to be frank, some of the key formulations in it are highly erroneous.

Bohmian mechanics is a theory about point particles moving along trajectories. It has the property that in a world governed by Bohmian mechanics, observers see the same statistics for experimental results as predicted by quantum mechanics. Bohmian mechanics thus provides an explanation of quantum mechanics. Moreover, the Bohmian trajectories are defined in a non-conspiratorial way by a few simple laws.

Quantum philosophy, a peculiar twentieth-century malady, is responsible for most of the conceptual muddle plaguing the foundations of quantum physics. When this philosophy is eschewed, one naturally arrives at Bohmian mechanics, which is what emerges from Schrodinger's equation for a nonrelativistic system of particles when we merely insist that 'particles' means particles. While distinctly non-Newtonian, Bohmian mechanics is a fully deterministic theory of particles in motion, a motion choreographed by the wave function. The quantum formalism emerges when measurement situations are (...) analyzed according to this theory. When the quantum formalism is regarded as arising in this way, the paradoxes and perplexities so often associated with quantum theory simply evaporate.Bohr's ... approach to atomic problems ... is really remarkable. He is completely convinced that any understanding in the usual sense of the word is impossible. Therefore the conversation is almost immediately driven into philosophical questions, and soon you no longer know whether you really take the position he is attacking, or whether you really must attack the position he is defending. Conducting research with vulnerable populations involves careful attention to the interests of individuals. Although it is generally understood that informed consent is a necessary prerequisite to research participation, it is less clear how to proceed when potential research participants lack the capacity to provide this informed consent. The rationale for assessing the assent or dissent of vulnerable individuals and obtaining informed consent by authorized representatives is discussed. Practical guidelines for recruitment of and data collection from people in the middle or (...) late stage of dementia are proposed. These guidelines were used by research assistants in a minimal risk study. (shrink)

This article deals with the notion of jurisdictional discourse, which, as a specific type of complex discourse, always poses a real challenge to translators. The authors present a contrastive analysis of the texts of legal decisions in French, German and Polish in order to demonstrate the difficulties in translation and the consequences which they entail, and to suggest a strategy for overcoming them. Firstly, the authors briefly compare the texts of judicial decisions indicating their characteristics both in terms of the (...) macrostructure of the text and in terms of syntactic and lexical units. Secondly, they explain the origin of the difficulties in translation resulting from the qualitative differences of the legal systems. Thirdly, the different types of difficulties are described and illustrated by practical examples, in order to make experienced translators and apprentice translators sensitive to them. The corpus used for the analysis consists of the integral and documented texts of the French, German and Polish judgments rendered in matters of civil law [37]. It should also be noted that the analyzed texts are comparable texts, which are a valuable tool for translators and allow them to acquire means of expression that are as natural as possible [40]. Segundo as descobertas da Física Moderna (Física Quántica), Realidade (Wirklichkeit em Alemão) não é mais o real que nos é familiar e tangível (cousal), mas algo bem diferente, tanto espacial como temporalmente, algo claramente mais aberto. Trata-se de algo holístico, uma Gestalt de carácter a-material, uma relação depura inter-conexão ("a-dvaita"), uma potencialidade inseparável, similar ao amor espiritual e omnicompreensivo. Ou seja, segundo o autor, a realidade está possuída por uma tonalidade processual, uma inspiração holística e intimamente conectada, uma transformação, um (...) processo contínuo de criação e aniquilamento, com o potencial de se manifestar a si mesma de um modo em que predomina uma essencial complementaridade dual energético-material. Assim, para o autor do artigo, o mundo em que vivemos, Wirklichkeit, não pode ser propriamente compreendido em termos puramente ontológicos. Segundo o autor, a questão : O que é, o que é que existe? torna-se uma questão desprovida de sentido. Em sua opinião, admissíveis seriam apenas questões acerca do que propriamente actua (wirkt), do que acontece, do que conecta, ou, por outras palavras, a questão do "entre". Consequentemente, a evolução no tempo e no espaço não procede mais de leis causais estritamente determinadas, pois o que existe são apenas tendências gerais intrínsecas (expectações), caracterizadas por probabilidades relativas a uma infinidade de realizações possíveis, as quais em média, pelo processo de sobreposições descoerentes, nos fazem voltar à nossa concepção comum do mundo como sendo uma realidade tangível dominada por leis naturais rigorosa e universalmente válidas. /// According to the findings of modern physics (quantum physics) Reality (in German more appropriate: Wirklichkeitj is basically no more the familiar, tangible (thing-like) reality but quite different and, spatially and temporally, more open. It is a holistic a-material "Gestalt", a pure connectedness ("a-dvaita"), an inseparable potentiality, similar to the spiritual and to all-embracing love. It relates to a processlike holistic and intimately connected inspiration and transformation, a continuous creation and annihilation, with the potential manifesting itself with some vagueness in complementary dual and essentially energetic/material diversified fashion. Hence, for the author, the world in which we are living, Wirklichkeit, cannot be understood strictly in an ontological way. The question: What is, what exists? becomes meaningless. Questions still admissible are: What acts (wirkt), happens, binds?, the question for the "in-between". The evolution in time does not follow anymore from strictly determined causal laws but there are only general intrinsic tendencies ("expectations"), characterised by probabilities for infinitely many possible realizations, which on average (decoherent superpositions) lead back to our familiar conception of the world as an objective tangible reality with its rigorously valid natural laws. It is well known that density matrices can be used in quantum mechanics to represent the information available to an observer about either a system with a random wave function (“statistical mixture”) or a system that is entangled with another system (“reduced density matrix”). We point out another role, previously unnoticed in the literature, that a density matrix can play: it can be the “conditional density matrix,” conditional on the configuration of the environment. A precise definition can be given in (...) the context of Bohmian mechanics, whereas orthodox quantum mechanics is too vague to allow a sharp definition, except perhaps in special cases. In contrast to statistical and reduced density matrices, forming the conditional density matrix involves no averaging. In Bohmian mechanics with spin, the conditional density matrix replaces the notion of conditional wave function, as the object with the same dynamical significance as the wave function of a Bohmian system. Human encroachment on the habitats of wild animals and the dense living conditions of farmed animals increase spill-over risk of emerging infectious diseases from animals to humans (such as COVID-19). In this article, we defend two claims: First, we argue that in order to limit the risk of emerging infectious disease outbreaks in the future, a One Health approach is needed, which focuses on human, animal, and environmental health. Second, we claim that One Health should not solely be grounded in (...) collaborations between veterinary, medical, and environmental scientists, but should also involve more dialogue with animal and environmental ethicists. Such an interdisciplinary approach would result in epidemiology-driven measures that are ethically legitimate. (shrink)

This paper provides a starting point for thinking beyond a research–practice divide and discusses possible new conceptualizations of intervention and the role of IT research in contemporary organizational settings. ‘IT research’ denotes a conglomerate of overlapping research conducted under the headings of Information Systems, Systems Development, Critical IS Research and Participatory Design. The paper applies this joint notion of IT research and the IT researcher to draw parallels across these niches of research regarding the question of intervention. Through an analysis (...) of selected field study events, a prominent notion of intervention (as being active as opposed to being passive) is reworked in terms of intervention as circumstance, a circumstantial interplay of situated practices. In closing, subsequent possibilities for repositioning the IT researcher are discussed in terms of reflexivity, facilitation or being a trickster. (shrink)

We analyze the origin of quantum randomness within the framework of a completely deterministic theory of particle motion—Bohmian mechanics. We show that a universe governed by this mechanics evolves in such a way as to give rise to the appearance of randomness, with empirical distributions in agreement with the predictions of the quantum formalism. Crucial ingredients in our analysis are the concept of the effective wave function of a subsystem and that of a random system. This paper takes the form of a ‘performative’ dialogue, a recounting of scenes, which alternate, in the mode of a cinematic montage, with academic analysis of the interfaces between boxing, art, and space. In his book Body and Soul: Notebooks on an Apprentice Boxer, sociologist Loïc Wacquant mixes three genres: analytic sociology, depictive ethnography, and short story. He argues that he used this unorthodox methodology ‘to make the reader simultaneously feel and understand how boxers are “gripped” by their craft and (...) viscerally tied to it’. Similarly, in this paper, the overlapping voices of its two authors engage in both performative, creative and intellectual ways with the critiques and social rituals surrounding boxing, ultimately finding that an understanding of boxing as an epistemological encounter gives rise to interesting ways to think through the relationships between art and urban space itself. The paper ranges widely over each author’s personal experience of boxing, analyses of specific artworks both ancient and modern, and an analysis of the psychogeography of urban space, and in particular, Johannesburg. The form of the paper, as it incorporates narrative experience and analytic mode, can be seen as a text that re-enacts the ‘performance’ of boxing and art-making in which the traditional opposition between the two is integrated, if not suspended. In classical physics, the world is considered as a matter-based reality, the arrangement of whose parts in time is uniquely determined by certain dynamic laws. By contrast, modern quantum physics reveals that matter is not composed of matter, but reality is merely potentiality. The world has a holistic structure, which is based on fundamental relations and not material objects, admitting more open, indeterministic developments. In this more flexible causal framework, inanimate and animate matter are not to be considered as fundamentally (...) different but as different order structures of the same immaterial entity. In a stable configuration, effectively all the uncertainties are statistically averaged out, thus the unique and deterministic behavior of ordinary inanimate matter is exhibited; whereas in the case of statically unstable but dynamically stable configurations, the “lively” features of the underlying quantum structure have a chance to surface to the mesocopic level and to be connected with what we observe as the phenomenon of life. This supposition can be more explicitly treated and clarified by identifying the electric dipole moment of biomolecules as the ordering parameter of the corresponding macroquantum system. This has important consequences for biology and medicine. In particular, it suggests the existence of a quantum-based “software,” essential perhaps for the logistics of biological processes, which are hidden behind the matter/energy-based “hardware” that alone is considered in the conventional approach. In medicine it opens an opportunity to build bridges between conventional medicine based essentially on the classical paradigm, and the various forms of complementary medicine, which have strong affinities with the new features of the modern holistic worldview. The root of the notion of “nihilism” can be taken back to the Greek sophist philosopher Gorgias. Also this notion is used in ontological and political senses. However, “nihilism” was approached by Nietzsche in terms of the “value” problem. The notion is related to the meaning of life. For Nietzsche, the notion of nihilism refers to diminishing the life’s value. Through nihilism, it is concluded that this life has no meaning. According to him, it is not possible to mention the (...) other world or a place beyond the sensory. Western metaphysics centers on the “supersensuous” and sees the world as an illusion. Thus, according to Nietzsche, “nothingness” remains. Nietzsche believes that almost all of Western metaphysics is trivializing this world and leads to nothingness, and he finds the oldest roots of nihilism in Socrates. Nietzsche’s notion of nihilism is also related to his other concepts and notions such as “God is dead”, “decadence”, “Herd human”, “Free human” and “Superman”. This research will try to express how Nietzsche gave a meaning to nihilism. Contrary to popular belief, Nietzsche was not a nihilist, rather he developed a counter philosophy against nihilism. Nietzsche’s other notions related to nihilism will also be examined to the extent permitted by our text. In addition, the problematics of nihilism will also be discussed. (shrink)
