A Meta-Analysis of the Impact of Entrepreneurs’ Gender on their Access to Bank Finance.Malin Malmström, Barbara Burkhard, Charlotta Sirén, Dean Shepherd & Joakim Wincent - forthcoming - Journal of Business Ethics:1-18.
This meta-analysis of 31 studies over 20 years advances our understanding of the gender gap in entrepreneurial bank finance. Findings from previous research on the relationship between entrepreneurs’ gender and bank financing are mixed, which suggests the need to pay particular attention to entrepreneurs’ social context. In this study, we develop a model of how social gender norms explain variation in women entrepreneurs’ (vis-à-vis men entrepreneurs’) access to bank finance. Specifically, we theorize how women’s formal (their nations’ political ideologies) and (...)

    0-1 laws for recursive structures.E. Grädel & A. Malmström - 1999 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 38 (4-5):205-215.
We discuss resource-bounded measures on the class of recursive structures and prove that with respect to such measures a random recursive structure is almost surely isomorphic to the unique countable model of the extension axioms.

More Regulation of Industry-Supported Biomedical Research: Are We Asking the Right Questions?Sigrid Fry-Revere & David Bjorn Malmstrom - 2009 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 37 (3):420-430.
Industry-sponsored biomedical research is under the microscope. In an attempt to achieve just results in extraordinary cases, critics are suggesting regulations that would pervert the U.S. clinical trial process. However, the arguments made to justify such regulation are weak at best. All the proposals to regulate industry sponsorship of clinical trials that we surveyed suffer from some form of fallacious reasoning. In the interest of advocating sound policy, this article points out some of the most common reasoning errors found in (...)

More Regulation of Industry-Supported Biomedical Research: Are We Asking the Right Questions?Sigrid Fry-Revere & David Bjorn Malmstrom - 2009 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 37 (3):420-430.
There is no doubt that industry-sponsored biomedical research is under the microscope. Unfortunately, this new era of skepticism prematurely rushes in doubts of the ethos of science. Skepticism can lead to positive changes, but only when timely and supported by sound reasoning. Snapshot views and theories, especially those that result in costly new regulations and inefficient policies often do more harm than good. Many critics would have the reader doubt scientific integrity because they believe that the relationship between the pharmaceutical (...)

    Le vers 4 du fragment 115 d’Empédocle (FVS 31 D.-K.): proposition d’une correction.Marcel Meulder - 2016 - Elenchos 37 (1-2):33-68.
By establishing a link between Homer’s, Hesiod’s and Empedocles’ similar textual expressions, we are allotted to assert that the fourth line of Empedocles’ fragment 115 (FVS 31) is authentic. We must read the first words of this line so: ὅς κεν ἑκὼν ἐπίορκον… This emendation of Empedocles’ text implies that the guilty god (or man or Blessed) whom Empedocles’ fragment mentions, is not urged by an (positive or negative) outside element, nor is deceived by a god or a man, acts (...)

    Narrative and Theories of Desire.Jay Clayton - 1989 - Critical Inquiry 16 (1):33-53.
The hope of moving beyond formalism is one of two things that unites an otherwise diverse group of literary theorists who have begun to explore the role of desire in narrative. Peter Brooks, for example, in Reading for the Plot, says in more than one place that his interest in desire “derives from my dissatisfaction with the various formalisms that have dominated critical thinking about narrative.”3 Leo Bersani sees desire as establishing a crucial link between social and literary structures. Teresa (...)

Do financial performance and firm’s value affect the quality of corporate social responsibility disclosure: Moderating role of chief executive officer’s power in China.Cao Na, Gaoliang Tian, Fawad Rauf & Khwaja Naveed - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This paper investigates the correlation between the quality of corporate social responsibility disclosure and financial performance. It also investigates the moderating role of chief executive officer power in the relationship between the quality of CSR disclosure and firm value in Chinese listed companies. The evidential research used the up-to-date sample of unbalanced findings for the period of 2014–2020, from the registered Chinese firms in the Shenzhen and Shanghai Stock Exchanges as samples for the study. As a starting point technique, the (...)

China’s Auto Industry Upgrade Process Based on Aging Chain and Coflow Model.Baojian Zhang, Pengli Li, Huaguo Zhou & Xiaohang Yue - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-12.
To protect energy resources and alleviate environmental pollution, many countries attach great importance to the transformation of traditional industries into clean energy industries. In this paper, fuel vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and electric vehicles are included in the research. Then, based on the aging chain and coflow theory of SDs, we construct a dynamic matching model of the auto industry upgrade process and its energy consumption attributes. The simulation results of China’s auto industry show that the upgrading of the auto industry (...)

  32. How Creationism Supports for Kripke’s Vichianism on Fiction.Alberto Voltolini - 2010 - In Franck Lihoreau (ed.), Truth in Fiction. Ontos Verlag. pp. 38--93.
In this paper, I want to show that a reasonable thesis on truth in fiction, Fictional Vichianism (FV)—according to which fictional truths are true because they are stipulated to be true—can be positively endorsed if one grounds Kripke’s justification for (FV), that traces back to the idea that names used in fiction never refer to concrete real individuals, into a creationist position on fictional entities that allows for a distinction between the pretending and the characterizing use of fiction-involving sentences. Thus, (...)

Machine Learning-Based Analysis of Digital Movement Assessment and ExerGame Scores for Parkinson's Disease Severity Estimation.Dunia J. Mahboobeh, Sofia B. Dias, Ahsan H. Khandoker & Leontios J. Hadjileontiadis - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Neurodegenerative Parkinson's Disease is one of the common incurable diseases among the elderly. Clinical assessments are characterized as standardized means for PD diagnosis. However, relying on medical evaluation of a patient's status can be subjective to physicians' experience, making the assessment process susceptible to human errors. The use of ICT-based tools for capturing the status of patients with PD can provide more objective and quantitative metrics. In this vein, the Personalized Serious Game Suite and intelligent Motor Assessment Tests, produced within (...)

    The Illusions of Techno-Anthropology.Angus Menuge - 2022 - Philosophia Christi 24 (1):85-100.
Many pro-life supporters accept the substance view of human value, tying intrinsic value to properties essential to all human beings. Many pro-choice supporters accept the functionalist view of human value, tying intrinsic value to accidental functional properties. They argue that there are circumstances in which terminating human beings is permissible. I offer three reasons for rejecting FV. First, FV fails to ontologically ground intrinsic qualities. Second, FV entails that technologically enhanced human beings may have greater intrinsic value than unenhanced human (...)
