    Syllogistic and Its Extensions. [REVIEW]B. B. J. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 18 (2):378-379.
Beginning with the traditional rules for syllogistic validity, Bird leads the reader without further ado through Aristotle's method of reduction, Keynes' treatment of the antilogism, Lukasiewicz's axiomatization, Ivo Thomas's extension of the last to negative terms, and on to the treatment of empty terms via informal Boolean algebra and the introduction of singular terms. Lukasiewicz's axiom system is investigated in some detail, and independence and consistency are proved. The problem of existential import is discussed quite thoroughly, though it is (...)

    Sacra Doctrina. [REVIEW]B. J. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (2):345-345.
The forces of reason and revelation, sometimes intimately intertwined, sometimes diametrically opposed, formed the leitmotif of medieval metaphysics. Utilizing the classic theories of Chenu and Gilson, Persson examines the harmonious balance between ratio and revelatio in the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. Basing his highly detailed analysis directly on the Summa Theologica, he ultimately shows how reason provided the systematizing impetus while revelation primarily determined the content of Thomistic thought. Examined are the subjects of divine love, causality, grace, and redemption--all (...)

    Medieval Thought: Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. [REVIEW]B. J. - 1970 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (2):338-338.
This second volume of a new intellectual history series purports to examine the thought of the two greatest medieval philosophers and theologians. It is a combination of an anthology and a "Heath" pamphlet. Included are select writings on God, man, sin, will, secular law and governments. Most of the selections have been reproduced in other anthologies. A historical introduction, modern commentary, and study questions compose the rest of the book. The modern commentary is the most valuable part of the book (...)

A Whig History of Ethics: A Review of "The Invention of Autonomy" by J. B. Schneewind. [REVIEW]G. Scott Davis - 2001 - Journal of Religious Ethics 29 (1):175 - 197.
    J. B. Schneewind's "The Invention of Autonomy" has been hailed as a major interpretation of modern moral thought. Schneewind's narrative, however, elides several serious interpretive issues, particularly in the transition from late medieval to early modern thought. This results in potentially distorted accounts of Thomas Aquinas, Hugo Grotius, and G. W. Leibniz. Since these thinkers play a crucial role in Schneewind's argument, uncertainty over their work calls into question at least some of Schneewind's larger agenda for the history of (...)

Experience and Theory as Determinants of Attitudes Toward Mental Representation: The Case of Knight Dunlap and the Vanishing Images of J.B. Watson.Nigel J. T. Thomas - 1989 - American Journal of Psychology 102:395-412.
Galton and subsequent investigators find wide divergences in people's subjective reports of mental imagery. Such individual differences might be taken to explain the peculiarly irreconcilable disputes over the nature and cognitive significance of imagery which have periodically broken out among psychologists and philosophers. However, to so explain these disputes is itself to take a substantive and questionable position on the cognitive role of imagery. This article distinguishes three separable issues over which people can be "for" or "against" mental images. Conflation (...)

  28. Last Judgment: The Visionary Biology of J. B. S. Haldane. [REVIEW]Mark B. Adams - 2000 - Journal of the History of Biology 33 (3):457 - 491.
This paper seeks to reinterpret the life and work of J. B. S. Haldane by focusing on an illuminating but largely ignored essay he published in 1927, "The Last Judgment" -- the sequel to his better known work, "Daedalus" (1924). This astonishing essay expresses a vision of the human future over the next 40,000,000 years, one that revises and updates Wellsian futurism with the long range implications of the "new biology" for human destiny. That vision served as a kind of (...)

This article by Johannes B. Lotz, S.J., never before translated into English, describes his contacts with Martin Heidegger. First it describes his arrival, along with Karl Rahner, S.J., to pursue doctoral studies in Freiburg im Breisgau and their first experiences with the famous professor. Lotz continues his narrative by mentioning times he met with Heidegger over the subsequent forty years up to the philosopher’s death. With Gustav Siewerth, Max Müller, Bernhard Welte, and Karl Rahner, Lotz belonged to a group of (...)

Jesus Christ may be regarded as the chief spirit of agitation and innovation. He himself declared, “I come not to bring peace, but a sword.” One cannot delve seriously into the centuries of activism and scholarship against racism, Jim Crowism, and the terrorism of lynching without encountering the legacies of Timothy Thomas Fortune and Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Black scholars from the 19th century to the present have been inspired by the sociological and economic works of Fortune and Wells. Scholars (...)

New Essays on the History of Autonomy: A Collection Honoring J. B. Schneewind.Natalie Brender, Larry Krasnoff & J. B. Schneewind (eds.) - 2004 - Cambridge University Press.
Kantian autonomy is often thought to be independent of time and place, but J. B. Schneewind in his landmark study, The Invention of Autonomy, has shown that there is much to be learned by setting Kant's moral philosophy in the context of the history of modern moral philosophy. The distinguished authors in the collection continue Schneewind's project by relating Kant's work to the historical context of his predecessors and to the empirical context of human agency. This will be a valuable (...)
