Hierarchies of Cause: Toward an Understanding of Rarity in Vascular Plant Species.Peggy L. Fiedler & Jeremy J. Ahouse - 1992 - In P. L. Fiedler & S. K. Jaim (eds.), Conservation Biology. Springer Us. pp. 23-47.
Four classes of naturally rare vascular plant species are described and classified, based on parameters of spatial distribution and longevity. Properties intrinsic to these time/space parameters are explored and an importance hierarchy of causes of rarity is proposed for each class. These hierarchies serve as the basis for a predictive classification. Human causes of rarity such as habitat destruction and taxonomic difficulties are not considered in detail here but are discussed as confounding factors in the elucidation of rarity in vascular (...)

Aphorismes.Conrad Fiedler - 2013 - Paris: Éditions Rue d'Ulm. Edited by Danièle Cohn & Sacha Zilberfarb.

The Cambridge Companion to Ancient Greek and Roman Science.Liba Taub (ed.) - 2020 - Cambridge University Press.
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the key themes in Greek and Roman science, medicine, mathematics and technology. A distinguished team of specialists engage with topics including the role of observation and experiment, Presocratic natural philosophy, ancient creationism, and the special style of ancient Greek mathematical texts, while several chapters confront key questions in the philosophy of science such as the relationship between evidence and explanation. The volume will spark renewed discussion about the character of 'ancient' versus 'modern' science, (...)

Ancient Greek and Roman science: a very short introduction.Liba Taub - 2023 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, Sharp, Inspiring Ancient Greece is often considered to be the birthplace of science and medicine, and the explanation of natural phenomena without recourse to supernatural causes. These early natural philosophers - lovers of wisdom concerning nature - sought to explain the order and composition of the world, and how we come to know it. They were particularly interested in what exists and how it is ordered: ontology and cosmology. They were also concerned with how we come (...)

The rationality of different kinds of intuitive decision processes.Marc Jekel, Andreas Glöckner, Susann Fiedler & Arndt Bröder - 2012 - Synthese 189 (S1):147-160.
Whereas classic work in judgment and decision making has focused on the deviation of intuition from rationality, more recent research has focused on the performance of intuition in real-world environments. Borrowing from both approaches, we investigate to which extent competing models of intuitive probabilistic decision making overlap with choices according to the axioms of probability theory and how accurate those models can be expected to perform in real-world environments. Specifically, we assessed to which extent heuristics, models implementing weighted additive information (...)

Quantification and precision: a brief look at some ancient accounts.Arthur Harris & Liba Taub - 2024 - Annals of Science 81 (1):10-29.
We explore the extent to which ancient Greek authors formulated concepts that approximate or encompass our modern notions of precision and accuracy. First, we focus on estimates and measurements of geographic features, astronomical times and positions, and weight. These raise further questions about whether the quantities reported were measured, estimated, or rounded. While ancient sources discuss the use of instruments, it is not always clear that the aim was to achieve what we would today regard as ‘precision’. Next, we briefly (...)

    Introduction: Reengaging with Instruments.Liba Taub - 2011 - Isis 102:689-696.
Over the past twenty years or so, historians of science have become increasingly sensitized to issues involved in studying and interpreting scientific and medical instruments. The contributors to this Focus section are historians of science who have worked closely with museum objects and collections, specifically instruments used in scientific and medical contexts. Such close engagement by historians of science is somewhat rare, provoking distinctive questions as to how we define and understand instruments, opening up issues regarding the value of broken (...)

Evolutionary ideas and ‘empirical’ methods: the analogy between language and species in works by Lyell and Schleicher.Liba Taub - 1993 - British Journal for the History of Science 26 (2):171-193.
In theOrigin of Species, Charles Darwin (1809–82) briefly drew an analogy between languages and species, suggesting that the genealogical relationships between languages provide a model for discussing the descent and modification of species. Further, he suggested that just as languages often contain some vestige of earlier speech, for example silent, unpronounced letters, so the rudimentary organs of animals can provide clues about genealogy and descent.

The current informal practice of pharmacometrics as a combination art and science makes it hard to appreciate the role that informatics can and should play in the future of the discipline and to comprehend the gaps that exist because of its absence. The development of pharmacometric informatics has important implications for expediting decision making and for improving the reliability of decisions made in model-based development. We argue that well-defined informatics for pharmacometrics can lead to much needed improvements in the efficiency, (...)
