In Pursuit of Educational Integrity: Professional Identity Formation in the Harvard Medical School Cambridge Integrated Clerkship.Elizabeth Gaufberg, David Bor, Perry Dinardo, Edward Krupat, Elizabeth Pine, Barbara Ogur & David A. Hirsh - 2017 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 60 (2):258-274.
Medical students' professional identity formation is an adaptive, developmental process. PIF is shaped by values implicit in educational practices and in the culture of the learning environment. In 2003, educational leaders at Harvard Medical School created the Cambridge Integrated Clerkship as a new model of clinical education to support PIF intentionally. The CIC, a longitudinal integrated clerkship, differs in structure, processes, and venues from traditional block rotations, while...

Socially distributed cognition in loosely coupled systems.Mark Perry - 2010 - AI and Society 25 (4):387-400.
Distributed cognition provides a theoretical framework for the analysis of data from socio-technical systems within a problem-solving framework. While the approach has been applied in tightly constrained activity domains, composed of well-structured problems and highly organised infrastructures, little is known about its use in other forms of activity systems. In this paper, we explore how distributed cognition could be applied in less well-constrained settings, with ill-structured problems and loosely organised resource sets, critically reflecting on this using data from a field (...)

Selves and self-concepts.John Perry - 2010 - In Joseph Keim Campbell, Michael O'Rourke & Harry S. Silverstein (eds.), Time and Identity. Bradford. pp. 229.
This chapter explores the notion of some philosophers that the self is a mysterious thing. It has been associated with a number of concepts, such as the souls of Christian theology, the essential natures that are passed along in reincarnation, or as noumenal objects that exist beyond normal space and time, outside of the causal realm, and join, in some Kantian way, with the primordial structure of reality to create the world as we know it. Hume, on the other hand, (...)

    Explanatory Problems for Mass Additivity and Dynamics.Zee R. Perry - 2023 - Critica 55 (163):45-80.
I present an argument against the view that the additivity of mass (i.e., the property according to which a composite object’s mass is the “sum” of its parts’) is metaphysically independent of dynamical laws governing massive bodies. In particular, taking additivity to be independent of dynamics commits you to widespread unexplained correlations between the mass properties of composites and the dynamic behavior of massive bodies. The second half of the paper extends this explanatory worry, showing that the very same considerations (...)

    Sex Discrimination in Insurance.Perry C. Beider - 1987 - Journal of Applied Philosophy 4 (1):65-75.
ABSTRACT The public controversy over sex‐based differentials in insurance pricing makes heavy use of terms like ‘fairness’ and ‘discrimination’; in particular, both sides argue that their position is the one dictated by considerations of fairness. Appeal to a basic principle of distributive justice shows that these differentials are not fair. Nevertheless, there is a substantial ethical argument to be made for the industry's status quo, based on the liberty of the low‐risk insurees. The paper considers an alternative reform proposal, with (...)

Books of extracts are often written to celebrate a reputation, or to move the reader to greater exertions by the words of the great. Neither of these reasons account for the assembling of this selection. For the traditional book of extracts reflects a traditional conception of their role, and below this conception is rejected. Rather, these extracts are thought of as working documents, selected to provide an occasion for critical and reflective thought, and presented in an order designed to ease (...)

Beyond the distinction between positivism and non-positivism.Stephen Perry - 2009 - Ratio Juris 22 (3):311-325.
In this article I discuss a number of issues raised by Professor Jules Coleman's recent article "Beyond the Separability Thesis." I suggest, to begin, that Coleman is correct that neither a narrow nor a broad formulation of the separability thesis takes us very far towards a robust distinction between legal positivism and legal non-positivism. I then offer a brief discussion of methodology in jurisprudence, suggesting that Coleman accepts, at least implicitly, what I call a "methodology of necessary features." Since there (...)

Confrontation and Its Discontents.Clifton Perry - 2017 - International Journal of Applied Philosophy 31 (1):93-103.
The United States Supreme Court has held that the criminal’s constitutional right of confrontation is not abridged when the defendant is not afforded the opportunity to cross-examine each and every witness offering evidence for the government. This rather surprising contention is investigated through an analysis of the Court’s arguments in light of certain philosophical principles.

Excerpt from Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation.Imani Perry - 2018 - Southern Journal of Philosophy 56 (S1):76-92.
This article comes from three different sections from the forthcoming Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation, which focus on the terms: personhood, patriarchy, and feminism, and the connection to language and power. The first part of the book is a historically‐based conceptual account of the foundation of patriarchy, and the second part explores the shifts in patriarchy unfold in the hypermedia neoliberal age.
