    Context Sensitivity and Chance.Quinn Harr - 2020 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 101 (4):562-581.
‘Chance’ is arguably a context‐sensitive expression, a fact that some have thought bears upon the debate about the compatibility of determinism with objective, non‐trivial chances (chances with values other than 0 or 1). In this paper, I argue that this attempted move from context sensitivity to compatibilism is misguided, for a number of reasons. First, it relies on a theory of context sensitivity that we have independent reason to reject. Second, the resulting compatibilist position leaves unanswered precisely the sorts of (...)

Reason and the Christian Religion: Essays in Honour of Richard Swinburne.Alan G. Padgett (ed.) - 1994 - New York: Clarendon Press.
Richard Swinburne is one of the most distinguished philosophers of religion of our day. In this volume, many notable philosophers in Britain and america unite to honour him and to discuss various topics to which he has contributed significantly. These include general topics in the philosophy of religion such as revelation, and faith and reason, and the specifically Christian doctrines of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and atonement. In the spirit of the movement which Richard Swinburned has spearheaded, the essays in (...)

Prolegomenon to Contemporary Ethics of Machine Translation.Wessel Reijers & Quinn Dupont - 2023 - In Helena Moniz & Carla Parra Escartín (eds.), Towards Responsible Machine Translation: Ethical and Legal Considerations in Machine Translation. Springer Verlag. pp. 11-27.
Globalisation has triggered a proliferation of translation practises, many of which are mediated by machines. This development raises fundamental philosophical questions about language, writing, meaning, reference, and representation. This chapter builds a bridge between the ethics of machine translation and philosophy of technology. It starts by considering the activity of translation as such and argues that this is an inherently ethical activity because it involves sacrifice, establishes commonality between foreign elements, and invokes certain professional virtues. Consequently, the chapter asks what (...)

    Bentham on Mensuration: Calculation and Moral Reasoning.Michael Quinn - 2014 - Utilitas 26 (1):61-104.
This article argues that Bentham was committed to attempting to measure the outcomes of rules by calculating the values of the pains and pleasures to which they gave rise. That pleasure was preferable to pain, and greater pleasure to less, were, for Bentham, foundational premises of rationality, whilst to abjure calculation was to abjure rationality. However, Bentham knew that the experience of pleasure and pain, the entities which provided his objective moral standard, was not only subjective, and only indirectly accessible (...)

    Equitable access to ectogenesis for sexual and gender minorities.Laura L. Kimberly, Megan E. Sutter & Gwendolyn P. Quinn - 2020 - Bioethics 34 (4):338-345.
As the technology for ectogenesis continues to advance, the ethical implications of such developments should be thoroughly and proactively explored. The possibility of full ectogenesis remains hypothetical at present, and myriad concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of the technology must be evaluated and addressed, while pressing moral considerations should be fully deliberated. However, it is conceivable that the technology may become sufficiently well established in the future and that eventually full ectogenesis might be deemed ethically acceptable as a reproductive (...)

Professional values, self-esteem, and ethical confidence of baccalaureate nursing students.Trisha A. Iacobucci, Barbara J. Daly, Debbie Lindell & Mary Quinn Griffin - 2013 - Nursing Ethics 20 (4):479-490.
Professional identity and competent ethical behaviors of nursing students are commonly developed through curricular inclusion of professional nursing values education. Despite the enactment of this approach, nursing students continue to express difficulty in managing ethical conflicts encountered in their practice. This descriptive correlational study explores the relationships between professional nursing values, self-esteem, and ethical decision making among senior baccalaureate nursing students. A convenience sample of 47 senior nursing students from the United States were surveyed for their level of internalized professional (...)

Corpulent Cattle and Milk Machines: Nature, Art and the Ideal Type.Michael S. Quinn - 1993 - Society and Animals 1 (2):145-157.
The concept of a "breed" of domestic cattle is predominantly a social construct. The late eighteenth century development of intensive selective breeding of livestock produced breeds that were visually distinguishable from each other. The adoption of breed standards was facilitated in part through paintings and drawings of idealized animals. These "ideal types" or "standards of perfection" further served as targets for breeders who attempted to achieve the artist's conception of the perfect animal. However, concepts of perfection change with fashion and (...)
