In his writings on the philosophy of religion, and especially in his Analogia entis, Przywara maintains one fundamental proposition: to establish «a unity between the natural and the supernatural, between philosophy and theology, in the key of a religious reality that is irreducible». This unity consists of an interior openness that presuppos- es a personal disposition towards seeking and finding God in the signs of the times, an awareness that one's own chosen way is «one among others possible». The content of this manifestation is the concept of God, «God in all things and beyond all things». Populism has been a rather marginalized notion in mainstream social sciences. In his ambitious work On Populist Reason, renowned theoretician Ernesto Laclau aimed to give the notion a more central role. However, the work is dominated by ungrounded theory. In this article I test the factors that the work identifies as conditions to explaining populism, against the backdrop of three historical cases the work analyzes. I add the case of Chávez and the Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela. From the comparison I (...) conclude that the work innovates less than it claims when explaining populism. I propose that a hypothetical way to build on its contribution is by shifting the focus from its central notion of heterogeneity to coalitions, and from there to types of populisms as a way towards the construction of grounded, middle-range generalizations. Science provides us with representations of atoms, elementary particles, polymers, populations, genetic trees, economies, rational decisions, aeroplanes, earthquakes, forest fires, irrigation systems, and the world’s climate. It's through these representations that we learn about the world. This entry explores various different accounts of scientific representation, with a particular focus on how scientific models represent their target systems. As philosophers of science are increasingly acknowledging the importance, if not the primacy, of scientific models as representational units of science, it's important to (...) stress that how they represent plays a fundamental role in how we are to answer other questions in the philosophy of science (e.g. the scientific realism debate). Sin embargo, este trabajo tiene por finalidad mostrar que las ideas de uno y otro pensador, referentes al tema de la metafísica de la voluntad, tienen más de alguna coincidencia que no resulta ser meramente casual. The so-called ergodic hierarchy (EH) is a central part of ergodic theory. It is a hierarchy of properties that dynamical systems can possess. Its five levels are egrodicity, weak mixing, strong mixing, Kolomogorov, and Bernoulli. Although EH is a mathematical theory, its concepts have been widely used in the foundations of statistical physics, accounts of randomness, and discussions about the nature of chaos. We introduce EH and discuss its applications in these fields.

Western philosophical orthodoxy places many aspects of other people's lives outside the scope of our knowledge. Demonstrating an alternative to this view, however, this book argues that Jean-Paul Sartre's application of his unique psychoanalytic method to Gustave Flaubert is the culmination of his project to show that it is possible to know everything there is to know about another person. It examines how Sartre aims to revolutionize our way of thinking about others by presenting his existential psychoanalysis as the means (...) to knowledge of both ourselves and others. Mathematical pluralism can take one of three forms: (1) every consistent mathematical theory consists of truths about its own domain of individuals and relations; (2) every mathematical theory, consistent or inconsistent, consists of truths about its own (possibly uninteresting) domain of individuals and relations; and (3) the principal philosophies of mathematics are each based upon an insight or truth about the nature of mathematics that can be validated. (1) includes the multiverse approach to set theory. (2) helps us to understand (...) the significance of the distinguished non‐logical individual and relation terms of even inconsistent theories. (3) is a metaphilosophical form of mathematical pluralism and hasn't been discussed in the literature. In what follows, I show how the analysis of theoretical mathematics in object theory exhibits all three forms of mathematical pluralism. (shrink)

António Vieira, pretende este artigo de homenagem, no 3° centenário da sua morte, propor uma leitura do Sermão da Sexagésima enquadrada por uma perspectiva teórica particular: a teoria linguística e semântica de O. Ducrot e mais especificamente a concepção argumentativa do discurso. Ao tentar ler e interpretar o texto de Vieira à luz, parcial e limitada, da teoria argumentativa do sentido, acalentamos um duplo desejo: testar, (...) em certo modo. a fecundidade da teoria adoptada; contribuir, com natural modéstia. para a actual compreensão do sentido duradoiro do admirável Sermão da Sexagésima. e do pensamento do seu genial Pregador. /// This essay is based on the acknowledgement of the permanently exemplar value of the sacred oratory of Fr. António Vieira. both as comunication and as language. As a homage article in the third centenary of his death, a hermeneutical reading of the "Sexagesima Sermon" from a particular theoretical perspective is proposed: that of O. Ducrot's linguistic and semantic theory, more specifically, the argumentative concept of discourse. In an attempt to read and interpret Vieira's text from the particular and limited perspective of meaning argumentative theory, a double purpose is aimed: firstly, to test the fertility of the adopted theory; secondly, to contribute, although modestly, to the actual understanding both of the lasting sense of the remarkable "Sexagesima Sermon", and of the thought of its brillant Preacher. En este artículo pretendo mostrar como la ontologización de la praxis, operada por Martin Heidegger en el período abarcado por sus Lecciones de Friburgo y Marburgo, puede contribuir en forma positiva a la fundamentación de una filosofía de técnica. La reformulación de la fenomenología vía la hermenéutica y la interpretación fenomenológica de Aristóteles que ofrece Heidegger es de una relevancia fundamental para el desarrollo de una hermenéutica de la acción técnica. El análisis de los comportamientos fundamentales descubridores de la vida (...) (theoría, poíesis, praxis) y sus correspondientes tipos de saberes (sophía, tékne, phrónesis), y la nueva interpretación de oúsia y kínesis son de importancia fundamental para este intento. El objetivo principal es localizar una filosofía de la técnica implícita en la obra temprana de Heidegger y elaborar una tesis del trato operativo que reconstruye la problemática filosófica de la técnica desde un nuevo punto de partida. It was proposed that the data from Monte Carlo statistical investigations be subjected to analysis of variance methods rather than the conventional techniques of tabling, graphing, and inspecting the data. Two examples in which analysis of variance methods were applied to published Monte Carlo studies were presented. It was suggested that balanced factorial designs should be used whenever possible in Monte Carlo studies so that analysis of variance methods would be directly applicable. Finally, three advantages of analysis of variance methods (...) over conventional techniques were described and analysis of variance methods were contrasted with a possible alternative analytical method, multiple regression analysis. Edwards_raises timeless questions about desire, choice, good, and evil, contrasting the opposing Calvinist and Arminian views of free will and addressing issues related to God's foreknowledge, determinism, and moral agency.

Valeroso ha sido el esfuerzo de Arno Münster, filósofo franco-alemán, profesor de la Universidad de Amiens, por hacer conocer la obra de Ernst Bloch. Esta lucha, larga de muchos años de enseñanza e investigación, a veces solitaria, a veces a contracorriente de ciertas tendencias dominantes en la filosofía universitaria continental europea, se materializa una vez más con ocasión de la publicación de su último libro que reagrupa de una serie de conferencias de diverso contenido temático sobre el pensamiento de Bloch, (...) pronunciadas en distintos escenarios a lo largo de los últimos cinco años. La primera, establece una especie de cuadro comparativo entre la idea de “comprenderse a sí mismo en la existencia” de Kierkegaard, el concepto de angustia en Heidegger y la ontología del todavía-no de Bloch. Anna Smajdor’s proposal of whole body gestational donation (WBGD) states that female patients diagnosed as brain-dead should be considered for use as gestational donors. In this response, Smajdor’s proposal is rejected on four different accounts: (a) the debated acceptability of surrogacy despite women's autonomy, (b) the harm to dead women ́s interests, (c) the interests of the descendants, and (d) the symbolic value of the body and interests of relatives. The first part argues that WBGD rests on a particular conception (...) of the instrumentalization of bodies that cannot be circumvented simply by the patient’s consent and relinquished autonomy. The second part argues the importance of avoiding any harm to dead women’s interests. The third part identifies the importance of the interest of the foetus in the light of Procreative-Beneficence principle that Smajdor overlooks. And finally, the fourth part considers the symbolic value of the human body and the interest of relatives. The main goal of this commentary is not to show that WBGD cannot be implemented; rather, it is to show that there are not any good arguments in favour of doing so. (shrink)

Aníbal Pineda Canabal: Sabemos que Ernst Bloch sentía aversión por la biografía, pero el camino de los estudiosos de un pensamiento, a veces, funciona también de traición en traición.

El uso de la tecnología para la creación artística ha sido recurrente a lo largo de la historia del arte. Artistas de todas las épocas han utilizado la tecnología como herramienta para nuevas formas de expresión. En este artículo, quiero diferenciar dos usos de la tecnología para ayudar a la creación artística: a) uso aumentativo y b) uso sustitutivo. Defiendo la idea de que la mayor parte de la relación histórica entre arte y tecnología ha sido enmarcada dentro de un (...) uso aumentativo, es decir, la tecnología ha ayudado a los artistas en la creación, producción y distribución de su arte. Sin embargo, las tecnologías digitales (TICs) y en concreto el uso de sistemas de Inteligencia Artificial (IA) y algoritmos están provocando un cambio de paradigma de un uso aumentativo hacia un uso sustitutivo. El uso sustitutivo de ciertas tecnologías -sistemas de IA y algoritmos- supone una transformación radical en la naturaleza del arte, su valor y el papel del artista. Ahora, sistemas de IA y algoritmos pueden pintar, componer música y escribir textos de manera no-supervisada. En otras palabras, la creatividad o la creación de arte se pueden automatizar. Dicho esto, quiero reflexionar sobre las implicaciones filosóficas del progresivo uso sustitutivo de la tecnología en el arte para explorar cuestiones como: ¿Las maquinas pueden crear arte?, ¿Es posible hablar de creatividad de las máquinas?, ¿Puede una máquina exigir derechos de autor o propiedad intelectual de una obra?
