Assessing the Effect of Dynamic Capabilities on the ESG Reporting and Corporate Performance Relationship With Topic Modeling: Evidence From Global Companies.Byung Mo Yang & Oh Suk Yang - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the dynamic capabilities embedded in ESG management, which are being pursued by global companies, and corporate performance amid increasing uncertainty. Furthermore, the secondary purpose is to examine the function of environmental uncertainty moderating the DCs-performance relationship. Concerning the analysis tool, this study employs topic modeling with Word2Vec embedding that analyzes unstructured data. This was employed as an alternative method beyond the limitations of the traditional approach, i.e., survey or (...)

Comparison of the end-of-life decisions of patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia after the enforcement of the life-sustaining treatment decision act in Korea.Moon Seong Baek, Kyeongman Jeon, Kyung Hoon Min, Jee Youn Oh, Jae Young Moon, Kwang Ha Yoo, Beomsu Shin, Hyun-Il Gil, Heung Bum Lee, Youjin Chang, Jin Hyoung Kim, Woo Hyun Cho, Hyun-Kyung Lee, Changhwan Kim, Hye Kyeong Park, Soohyun Bae, Sang-Bum Hong & Ae-Rin Baek - 2023 - BMC Medical Ethics 24 (1):1-10.
BackgroundAlthough the Life-Sustaining Treatment (LST) Decision Act was enforced in 2018 in Korea, data on whether it is well established in actual clinical settings are limited. Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is a common nosocomial infection with high mortality. However, there are limited data on the end-of-life (EOL) decision of patients with HAP. Therefore, we aimed to examine clinical characteristics and outcomes according to the EOL decision for patients with HAP.MethodsThis multicenter study enrolled patients with HAP at 16 referral hospitals retrospectively from (...)

    L’hypercapitalisme de la transparence.Byung-Chul Han & Emmanuel Alloa - 2018 - Multitudes 73 (4):64-67.

Faced with the current pandemic situation, many thinkers examined not only the relationship between the political dimension and the present health emergency, and the related social and economic transformations, but also and above all the changes in the construction of identity and the self-perception that it has determined and will continue to determine. Giorgio Agamben and Byung-Chul Han, although starting from different analyses (disciplinary society / performance society), agree on the return and on the tightening of devices that limit (...)

Who or what is the historical subject? – Andersian outlooks between psychopolitics and datism In this paper I will question the equivalence between mankind and historical subjectivity. Following the philosopher Günther Anders’ thoughts about industrial revolutions and technological development, I will outline the changes technology is forcing over mankind, to the point of a potential change of roles. The digital turn shows how this is still an ongoing process, as I will highlight referring to the works by the philosopher (...)-Chul Han and the historian Y. N. Harari. The internet, as well as algorithms and Big Data, marks a trend showing the synthetic being becoming more relevant than the biological one. (shrink)

    The Burnout Society.Byung-Chul Han - 2015 - De Gruyter.
Our competitive, service-oriented societies are taking a toll on the late-modern individual. Rather than improving life, multitasking, "user-friendly" technology, and the culture of convenience are producing disorders that range from depression to attention deficit disorder to borderline personality disorder. Byung-Chul Han interprets the spreading malaise as an inability to manage negative experiences in an age characterized by excessive positivity and the universal availability of people and goods. Stress and exhaustion are not just personal experiences, but social and historical phenomena (...)

The Transparency Society.Byung-Chul Han - 2015 - Stanford University Press.
Transparency is the order of the day. It is a term, a slogan, that dominates public discourse about corruption and freedom of information. Considered crucial to democracy, it touches our political and economic lives as well as our private lives. Anyone can obtain information about anything. Everything—and everyone—has become transparent: unveiled or exposed by the apparatuses that exert a kind of collective control over the post-capitalist world. Yet, transparency has a dark side that, ironically, has everything to do with a (...)

    Mill and Tocqueville: a friendship bruised.Byung-Hoon Suh - 2016 - History of European Ideas 42 (1):55-72.
SUMMARYHaving first met in 1835, John Stuart Mill and Alexis de Tocqueville began ‘an extremely interesting and mutually laudatory correspondence'; but their splendid friendship did not last. A popular thesis focuses on letters exchanged in 1840 to 1842 that reflect conflicting views on the Eastern Question and argues that Mill initiated the ‘strange interruption’. Given Mill's commitment to the ‘agreement of conviction and feeling on the few cardinal points of human opinion’ as a prerequisite of genuine friendship, such interpretation sounds (...)

Outside directors’ regular board meeting attendance is important in improving the effectiveness of a governance system. Such attendance is evidence of their commitment to the firm as key other players in monitoring and decision making. Using a unique dataset for Korean firms, and three-level random coefficients models, we find that, foreign outside directors, an independent appointment process, professional knowledge of business operations and accumulated firm-specific knowledge are important factors that affect outside directors’ attendance of board meetings. The results also confirm (...)

The philosophy of Zen Buddhism.Byung-Chul Han - 2022 - Hoboken, NJ: Polity Press. Edited by Daniel Steuer.
Zen Buddhism is a form of Mahāyāna Buddhism that originated in China and is strongly focused on meditation. It is characteristically sceptical towards language and distrustful of conceptual thought, which explains why Zen Buddhist sayings are so enigmatic and succinct. But despite Zen Buddhism’s hostility towards theory and discourse, it is possible to reflect philosophically on Zen Buddhism and bring out its philosophical insights. In this short book, Byung-Chul Han seeks to unfold the philosophical force inherent in Zen Buddhism, (...)

Institutional Racism and Social Norms: On the Debate Between Rawls and Mills.Keunchang Oh - 2024 - Philosophia 52 (2).
In this paper, I engage with the debate between John Rawls and Charles Mills. In the first part, relevant works by Rawls and Mills are mainly examined. To this end, I first begin by examining Rawls’s ideal theory of justice and its relevance to the issue of racism. I then consider Mills’s non-ideal critique of Rawls and supplement it with the help of the notion of social norms. Whereas Rawls’s view can deal with racial injustice as discrimination, in my view, (...)

Absence: on the culture and philosophy of the Far East.Byung-Chul Han - 2023 - Hoboken, New Jersey: Polity Press. Edited by Daniel Steuer.
Western thinking has long been dominated by essence, by a preoccupation with that which dwells in itself and delimits itself from the other. By contrast, Far Eastern thought is centred not on essence but on absence. The fundamental topos of Far Eastern thinking is not being but 'the way' (dao), which lacks the solidity and fixedness of essence. The difference between essence and absence is the difference between being and path, between dwelling and wandering. 'A Zen monk should be without (...)

These cell phones were not crude forgeries but multifunctional, stylish, and as good as or better than the originals.
