When deception becomes easy: the effects of task switching and goal neglect on the truth proportion effect.Bram Van Bockstaele, Christine Wilhelm, Ewout Meijer, Evelyne Debey & Bruno Verschuere - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:151121.
Lying is typically more cognitively demanding than truth telling. Yet, recent cognitive models of lying propose that lying can be just as easy as truth telling, depending on contextual factors. In line with this idea, research has shown that the cognitive cost of deception decreases when people frequently respond deceptively, while it increases when people rarely respond deceptively (i.e., the truth proportion effect). In the present study, we investigated two possible underlying mechanisms of the truth proportion effect. In Experiment 1 (...)

Human Reproduction: Principles, Practices, Policies.Christine Overall - 1993 - Oxford University Press.
Who owns frozen human embryos? Are "surrogate motherhood" arrangements dangerous for women? Should access to in vitro fertilization be limited or increased? With the development of complex reproductive technologies and the ensuing controversies in reproductive ethics, there is an urgent need for more careful examination of moral principles, current practices, and social policies pertaining to reproduction. The issues examined in this collection of nine papers focusing of the Canadian experience include abortion, the cryopreservation of embryos, the selective termination of fetuses (...)

    Miracles and God: A Reply to Robert A. H. Larmer.Christine Overall - 1997 - Dialogue 36 (4):741.

Body, Sex, and Pleasure: Reconstructing Christian Sexual Ethics.Christine E. Gudorf - 1994 - Pilgrim Press.
Perhaps no other single moral issue today is as hotly contested, or as divisive, as sexuality. Offering a bold and hopeful vision of how Christians - and all people of goodwill - can view this explosive topic, ethicist Christine Gudorf proposes nothing less than a sweeping challenge to traditional Christian teaching on sexual roles, activities, and relationships. Deftly drawing on Scripture, natural law, historical and contemporary Catholic and Protestant theology, the social sciences, and, significantly, the lived experiences of today's (...)

Abstraction and Empathy: A Contribution to the Psychology of Style.Wilhelm Worringer - 1997 - Ivan R. Dee Publisher.
Wilhelm Worringer's landmark study in the interpretation of modern art, first published in 1908, has seldom been out of print. Its profound impact not only on art historians and theorists but also for generations of creative writers and intellectuals is almost unprecedented. Starting from the notion that beauty derives from our sense of being able to identify with an object, Worringer argues that representational art produces satisfaction from our "objectified delight in the self," reflecting a confidence in the world (...)

The Digital Storywork Partnership: Community-Centered Social Studies to Revitalize Indigenous Histories and Cultural Knowledges.Christine Rogers Stanton, Brad Hall & Jioanna Carjuzaa - 2019 - Journal of Social Studies Research 43 (2):97-108.
Indigenous communities have always cultivated social studies learning that is interactive, dynamic, and integrated with traditional knowledges. To confront the assimilative and deculturalizing education that accompanied European settlement of the Americas, Montana has adopted Indian Education for All (IEFA). This case study evaluates the Digital Storywork Partnership (DSP), which strives to advance the goals of IEFA within and beyond the social studies classroom through community-centered research and filmmaking. Results demonstrate the potential for DSP projects to advance culturally revitalizing education, community (...)

The Captivated Gaze. Diderot’s Allegory of the Cave and Democracy.Christine Abbt - 2023 - Critical Horizons 24 (4):339-352.
ABSTRACT The problem of the captivated gaze has been taken up repeatedly in philosophy. Plato's Allegory of the Cave stands paradigmatically for this. Here, the gaze at the shadowy images prevents people from taking the path to the sun. Denis Diderot's critical reinterpretation of Plato's Allegory of the Cave is less well known. In Diderot, the view of the artificial light images is just as captivating as Plato's shadow images. Unlike there, however, Diderot does not distinguish between perception and cognition (...)

Jox, Alexander Gerbes, Lorenz Frey, Derek A. Dubay, Martin Angele, Manfred Stangl, Bruno Meiser, Jens Werner & Markus Guba - 2018 - BMC Medical Ethics 19 (1):7.
The allocation of any scarce health care resource, especially a lifesaving resource, can create profound ethical and legal challenges. Liver transplant allocation currently is based upon urgency, a sickest-first approach, and does not utilize capacity to benefit. While urgency can be described reasonably well with the MELD system, benefit encompasses multiple dimensions of patients’ well-being. Currently, the balance between both principles is ill-defined. This survey with 502 participants examines how urgency and benefit are weighted by different stakeholders. Liver transplant patients (...)

A number of important city-building projects across the early 20th century drew on the utopian ideas of the City Beautiful movement, an architectural response to the poverty and social dysfunctions generated by urban industrialism. This was also a moment in which the imperial connections and imperial ambitions of settler capitalist societies coincided with national projects. The curious co-existence of these ambitions was embodied in the capital city projects of the time – simultaneously imperial and national, and developed through an exchange (...)

In spite of strengthened financial regulation, ethical concern continues about the promotion and distribution of financial services in Britain, including savings and investment products. Greater ethical attention needs to be paid to products, price, promotion and distribution. The authors are all faculty members of the School of Management and Finance, University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham NG7 2RD, UK. Correspondence should be addressed to Dr Ennew. Ontologies de la création en musique.Christine Esclapez, Sylvain Brétéché & Mathias Rousselot (eds.) - 2012 - Paris: L'Harmattan.

Slavoj Žižek’s methodological reliance on analogy, tautology, and examples - and particularly on crude, humorous, or popular ones - is an oft-discussed and controversial feature of his work. My aim throughout this paper is to examine certain philosophical concerns - and namely universality - in Žižek’s work. As I will propose, tautology and analogy - particularly when understood vis-a-vis desire - offer us a rhetorical means of exploring these concerns; insofar as we accept tautology and analogy as strategic/pedagogic devices, they (...)
