Previous studies have identified the critical role of the left fusiform cortex in visual word form processing, learning, and memory. However, this so-called visual word form area's other functions are not clear. In this study, we used fMRI and the subsequent memory paradigm to examine whether the putative VWFA was involved in the processing and successful memory encoding of faces as well as words. Twenty-two native Chinese speakers were recruited to memorize the visual forms of faces and Chinese words. Episodic (...) memory for the studied material was tested 3. h after the scan with a recognition test. The fusiform face area and the VWFA were functionally defined using separate localizer tasks. We found that, both within and across subjects, stronger activity in the VWFA was associated with better recognition memory of both words and faces. Furthermore, activation in the VWFA did not differ significantly during the encoding of faces and words. Our results revealed the important role of the so-called VWFA in face processing and memory and supported the view that the left mid-fusiform cortex plays a general role in the successful processing and memory of different types of visual objects. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. On the premise that the good knowing is the originary reality, this article provides a synopsis of Wang Yangming’s exposition of the fundamental essence of liangzhi. The self-existent resemblances of the originary reality are outlined and summarized as the eight virtues of liangzhi: voidness, intelligence, luminousness, awareness, constancy, happiness, true I, and purity. These eight virtues are, however, ultimately subsumed by the middle, which governs them in common. The best way to protect information is never to release it. Yet even the earliest definition of security recognizes availability as a necessary quality. In this work, we seek to quantify the value of information disclosure for web resource evaluation and discovery. Communal evaluation tools help users share ratings on websites, music, and other online resources. This approach assumes that experiences are self-similar, so that a site one person visits is likely to have been evaluated and thus visited by others. (...) Collaborative search tools aim for discovery as opposed to evaluation. Therefore, they assume participants in a collaborative network have large sets of non-overlapping sites so that an increase in network size corresponds to an increase in web coverage. We quantify the value of information sharing for these closely related but sometimes distinct functions. In this paper, we analyzed a dataset that includes eight weeks of browsing history of 1084 college students that live in the same dormitory. Our experiments showed that for discovery, more sharing monotonically improves results; for evaluation, however, there are decreasing marginal returns for each participant added to the network. The subject population was selected for its homogeneity in order to mimic a collaborative network. (shrink)

Smart grids are rolling out internationally, with the United States nearing completion of a significant USD4-plus-billion federal program funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The emergence of smart grids is widespread across developed countries. Multiple approaches to analyzing the benefits of smart grids have emerged. The goals of this white paper are to review these approaches and analyze examples of each to highlight their differences, advantages, and disadvantages. This work was conducted under the auspices of a joint U.S.-China (...) research effort, the Climate Change Working Group Implementation Plan, Smart Grid. We present comparative benefits assessments of smart grid demonstrations in the U.S. and China along with a BA of a pilot project in Europe. In the U.S., we assess projects at two sites: the University of California, Irvine campus, which consists of two distinct demonstrations: Southern California Edison’s Irvine Smart Grid Demonstration Project and the UCI campus itself; and the Navy Yard area in Philadelphia, which has been repurposed as a mixed commercial-industrial, and possibly residential, development. In China, we cover several smart-grid aspects of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city and the Shenzhen Bay Technology and Ecology City. In Europe, we look at a BA of a pilot smart grid project in the Malagrotta area west of Rome, Italy, contributed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission. The Irvine sub-project BAs use the U.S. Department of Energy Smart Grid Computational Tool, which is built on methods developed by the Electric Power Research Institute. The TEC sub-project BAs apply Smart Grid Multi-Criteria Analysis developed by the State Grid Corporation of China based on the analytic hierarchy process with fuzzy logic. The B-TEC and TNY sub-project BAs are evaluated using new approaches developed by those project teams. JRC has adopted an approach similar to EPRI’s but tailored to the Malagrotta distribution grid. The principle of fairness holds that individuals (beneficiaries) who benefit from a cooperative scheme of others (cooperators) have an obligation to do their share in return for their benefit. The original proponent of this principle, H. L. A. Hart suggests ‘mutuality of restrictions’ as a moral basis because it is fair to mutually restrict the freedom of both beneficiaries and cooperators; so called the fairness obligation. This paper explores ‘mutuality of restrictions’, which is interpreted as a right-based and an equality-based (...) justification of the fairness obligation. It is not argued whether both ways of justifying the obligation makes a success, but that they are in need of presupposing that there is a duty for beneficiaries to do their share in return for their benefit. This suggests turning to a duty-based justification of the fairness obligation. (shrink)

l‐Lactate is emerging as a crucial regulatory nexus for energy metabolism in the brain and signaling transduction in synaptic plasticity, memory processes, and drug addiction instead of being merely a waste by‐product of anaerobic glycolysis. In this review, the role of lactate in various memory processes, synapse plasticity and drug addiction on the basis of recent studies is summarized and discussed. To this end, three main parts are presented: first, lactate as an energy substrate in energy metabolism of the brain (...) is described; second, lactate as a novel signaling molecule in synaptic plasticity, neural circuits, memory, and drug addiction is described; and third, in light of the above descriptions, it is plausible to speculate that lactate is predominantly a signaling molecule in specific memory processes and partly acts as an energy substrate. The future perspective in lactate signaling involving microglia and associated precise signaling pathways in the brain is highlighted. (shrink)

가브리엘 마르셀에게 있어서 존재론적 차원에서 보자면 모든 소유하고자 하는 갈망은 무의미하다. 왜냐하면 진정한 소유란 오직 직접적이고 절대적으로 ‘나의 것’인 나의 육체뿐이기 때문이다. 따라서 의미 있는 갈망이란 존재의 차원에서 주어지는 것인데, 이는 존재의 갈망 혹은 존재에 대한 갈망(désir de l'être)이다. 마르셀에게 있어서 그의 존재란 ‘그인 모든 것’ 혹은 ‘그의 총체성’을 의미하기에 육체가 존재의 한 요소일 뿐 아니라, 육체적 실존을 유형적 실존(existant-type) 혹은 다른 모든 실존들의 척도로 규정된다. 이러한 관점은 감각적 경험에 조차 형이상학적인 의미나 가치를 부여하게 된다. 존재란 ‘총체성’이라는 그 특성에 의해서 (...) ‘일면 이해가능하나, 일면 이해 불가능한 것’으로 나타나므로 ‘신비’의 특성을 지니며, 결코 ‘문제’로 이해될 수 없다. 존재는 또한 ‘총체성’이란 그 의미 안에 ‘초월적인 것과의 관계성’을 포함하고 있는데, 이 점에 있어서 마르셀은 스콜라철학의 관점을 공유하고 있다. 즉 존재에 대한 갈망의 궁극적인 지점에서 마주하는 것은 곧 ‘신적 현존’에 대한 갈망이다. 이리하여 존재에 대한 갈망은 ①소유의식에서 존재의식에 대한 갈망으로, ②나의 실재 자체(ma réalité même)에 대한 갈망으로, ③문제가 아닌 신비로서 그리고 ④초월성에 대한 갈망에로 라는 4가지 국면으로 나타나게 된다. 이러한 갈망이 충족되기 위해 요청되는 것이 곧 ‘존재론적 exigence’이며, 그것이 사회 환경의 변화에 대한 것일 때는 정당한 권리에 대한 청원이므로 ‘요구’의 형식으로 나타나며, 인간의 관계성에 대한 것이거나 신적 현존에 대한 것일 때는 ‘상호주관성’의 원리에 의해서 ‘요구’가 아닌 ‘요청’의 형식으로 나타나게 된다. 그리고 이러한 존재에 대한 갈망이 이상적인 형식으로 충족되는 것은 곧 ‘사랑(amour)’과 종교적 사랑(charité)에 의해서 인데, 그것은 진정한 사랑이란 본질적으로 ‘소유의식’이 아닌 ‘존재의식’으로서 ‘내적인 일치’를 통한 ‘하나 됨’을 지향하기 때문이다. 실존주의에서 ‘무신론적 실존주의’와 ‘유신론적 실존주의’는 동일하게 ‘실존이 본질에 앞선다’는 출발점을 지니고 있으며, 동일하게 휴머니즘을 지향하고 있지만 서로 다른 두 얼굴을 지니고 있다. 인간에 대한 일체의 ‘일반적인’ 혹은 ‘보편적인’ 관념을 규정할 수 없으며, 인간의 본질은 스스로 선택하고 책임을 져야 한다고 생각하는 사르트르에게 있어서 신에 대한 부정은 필연적인 것이다. 신 중심의 사유를 부정하고 나아가 인간의 개별적이고 실존적인 자유를 억압하는 일체의 ‘유형화’와 ‘이데올로기적인 것’을 부정하고 있는 사르트르에게 있어서 인간이 추구해야할 가장 소중한 가치는 ‘자유’이다. 그에게 있어서 경험적 자아에 앞서는 초월적인 주관이라는 것도 자아가 성립하기 (...) 위한 가능성의 조건으로서만 의미가 있을 뿐 개별자에 대한 어떠한 실체화도 있을 수가 없다. 이러한 사르트르의 사유에서 ‘타인’과의 실존적인 소통은 불가능한 것이며, 인간실존의 근원적 상황은 고독과 불안처럼 나타난다. 반면 가브리엘 마르셀은 인간의 실존을 분석함에 있어서 ‘소통의 갈망’과 하나의 ‘역설적인 상황’에 주목하고 있다. 이 역설은 자유의 박탈감을 체험하는 것이 곧 ‘자유롭고자 갈망하는 것’이다. 가브리엘 마르셀에게 있어서 자유란 곧 자신의 실현이라는 것을 의미하기에 개별자의 실체성은 부정될 수 없으며, 개별자의 실체성을 파괴하는 모든 유형적, 이데올로기적 문화를 비판하고 있다. 실존에 선행하는 본질이 있을 수 없기에 개별자의 실체성(본질)은 실존적인 삶을 통해서 실현되어야 하는 것이며, 따라서 나에 대한 앎은 곧 너와의 관계성 속에서 가능하다. 즉 인간은 근원적으로 ‘너’와의 관계성을 통해서 ‘나’를 알고 ‘나 자신인 것’을 형성해가는 존재이다. 바로 이러한 특성이 ‘상호-주관적 특성(le caractère inter-subjectif)’이다. 이러한 상호주관적 특성은 사르트르의 무신론적인 실존주의와 근본적으로 다른 점이며, 신을 긍정하게 되는 계기가 된다. 인간실존의 ‘상호주관적 특성’은 절대적인 너를 요청하며, 절대자와의 어떤 상호적인 관여는 불안과 비극의 현대적 상황 안에서도 ‘희망’을 가지게 하고, 형제적 사랑을 가능하게 한다. 사유하는 존재로서의 인간에게 있어서 앎의 주체인 인간의 지성에 대해 이해한다는 것은 매우 중요하다. 그것은 인간의 가장 본질적인 부분에 대한 이해이기 때문이다. 중세의 대표적인 두 철학자 아우구스티누스와 토마스 아퀴나스의 ‘영혼’에 대한 비교 이해는 중세철학의 인간관에 대한 보다 완전한 이해의 발판을 마련한다는 차원에서 중요한 연구라 할 수 있다. 감각적 인식의 차원에서 두 철학자들 모두에게 공통되는 점은 감각인식도 인식인 한 그 인식의 주체는 영혼(지성혼)이라는 점이다. 차이점이 있다면 아우구스티누스는 영혼과 육체를 서로 다른 존재론적 위상을 가진 것으로 본데 비해 토마스 아퀴나스는 영혼과 육체는 불가분하게 결합된 (...) 하나의 실체로 본다는 점이다. 이러한 차이점은 진리 인식의 방법론에 있어서 결정적인 차이점을 유발한다. 아우구스티누스에게 있어서는, 지성혼이 그 초월성으로 인해 육체적 질료로부터 추상작용을 한다는 것이 불가능하기에, 진리의 판단 근거가 되는 척도(개념, 이데아)가 신의 신성한 조명에 의해서 주어지며, 토마스 아퀴나스는 이러한 척도들은 지성이 추상작용을 통해 스스로 산출한다고 보고 있다. 이러한 사유는 각자 지성혼을 이해하는 방식에서도 달리 적용되는데 아우구스티누스는 위계적인 차원에서 지성혼의 기능을 사유, 지성, 오성, 이성, 정신 등으로 마치 독립된 부분들처럼 구별하고 있지만, 토마스 아퀴나스는 지성이라는 하나의 주체가 가지는 기능에 따라 중개지성, 능동지성, 수동지성, 가능지성, 사변지성, 실천지성 등으로 구별하고 있다. 따라서 전자에게는 인간이성의 신성과의 관계가 중시되며 현자들은 신성한 조명을 통해 영원하고 불변하는 진리의 척도를 획득하나, 후자에게는 인간지성이 획득한 척도들(개념, 원리들)은 항상 보다 완전하게 발전할 여지를 가진 것으로, 현자들에게 보다 중요한 것은 (조명이 아니라) 숙고와 올바른 사유이다. 전자로부터 우리는 인간정신이 가진 신비주의적 면모를 후자에게서는 지성의 활동의 창조적 면모를 발견할 수가 있다. 이러한 차이점에도 불구하고 우리는 이 두 사상을 통해서 인간은 올바로 사유하기만 한다면 진리에 도달할 수 있다는 중세의 긍정적 인간관을 발견할 수 있다. 나아가 ‘인간(영혼)이 신성한 조명의 세계에로 열려 있다는 것’과 ‘인간은 이성을 통해 보편적인 앎의 세계에로 무한히 나아갈 수 있다는 사유’를 통해서 ‘인간은 자신보다 더 큰 세계를 향하고 있다’는 중세특유의 사유를 이해할 수 있는 것이다. 한 시대의 철학이 그 시대의 문화적 상황과 불가분하게 연관되어 있다는 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 현대철학의 정신이 현상학의 이념을 초석으로 하고 있다면, 현대의 예술 또한 이러한 현상학적 사유와 밀접히 연관되어 있을 것이다. 본 논문은 이러한 현상학적 사유에 충실한 푸코의 ‘구조주의적 사유’를 통해서 피카소의 예술행위를 이해하고자 한다. 푸코는 인간에 대한 기존의 철학적 사유들이 단순히 ‘만들려진 것’에 불과한 것이라고 생각함으로써 ‘다르게 생각하기’라는 철학적 사명을 통해 자신의 사유를 전개하고 있다. 인간에 대한 기존의 모든 관념들을 부정하고 난 인간은 오직 자신 스스로 자신의 의미를 기획하고 (...) 형성할 수밖에 없으며, 이것이 ‘스스로 자신을 기획해가는’ 푸코의 인간관이다. 하나의 말이나 사유가 의미를 가지기 위해서는 그 말이나 사유가 포함되어 있는 전체 사회의 구조를 전재해야한다는 것이 푸코의 관점이며, 이러한 구조를 유발하는 것이 권력인 것이다. 따라서 푸코에 있어서 역사란 권력의 쟁취를 위한 부단한 투쟁의 과정이며 불연속적인 것이다. 이러한 역사의 과정에서 ‘천재’와 ‘광인’은 사실상 다른 것이 아니다. ‘광인’이란 한 시대의 전체적인 구조 속에서 의미를 획득하지 못한 어떤 진실을 말하는 사람이며, 천재란 이러한 광인의 진실이 권력을 획득함으로써 진실로 받아들여진 것을 의미한다. 이러한 푸코의 사유에 있어서는 예술이라는 것도 사실상 권력을 획득하기 위한 하나의 과정이다. 이러한 푸코의 사유는 자신의 시대에 있어서 가장 낮 설었고 또한 동시에 가장 성공적인 예술가였던 피카소의 예술을 이해하는데 가장 적합한 사유가 되고 있다. 피카소의 예술행위의 가장 큰 특징은 모든 전통과의 돌연한 단절, 객관적 세계와의 모든 연결의 부재였다. 이러한 전통과의 단절 자기시대와의 단절은 푸코의 ‘광인’의 이미지와 정확히 일치한다. 즉 피카소는 오직 자기 자신으로부터의 의미를 가지는, 다시 말해서 오직 내적 필연성에 의해서만 그림을 그리는 ‘스스로 기획하는 자’로서의 예술가가 되고자 한 것이다. 그러기에 초기의 피카소는 사회로부터 ‘광인’일 수밖에 없었던 것이다. 하지만 피카소는 자신과 동시대의 사회적 구조를 누구보다도 잘 파악한 예술가였고, 그러기에 그는 당시의 대중들의 ‘집단적인 무의식에 내재한 원형적(原型的) 이미지’를 누구보다도 잘 표현한 예술가였다. 이러한 그의 능력은 역사상 그 어떤 예술가보다도 빠르게 ‘광인’으로부터 ‘천재’로 둔갑하게 한 원동력이 되었고, 이는 곧 권력이 된 것이다. 피카소의 성공신화는 피카소라는 ‘예술가의 이름’이 곧 권력이 되게 한 유일한 사례가 되었으며, 피카소라는 이름은 누구나 알고 있지만, 피카소의 작품에 대해서는 무지한 이유가 바로 여기에 있는 것이다. 하지만 ‘창의적 발견과 발명’이라는 형식주의에 치중한 피카소의 예술은 ‘매너리즘’에 빠지게 되고 그 ‘주제의 빈약성’으로 인하여 ‘그 자체 궁극적인 목적인 작품창작’이라는 순수예술로서의 추락을 함의하고 있다. 바로 이러한 피카소의 실패는 ‘창의적인 발견’으로서의 푸코의 예술관이 가지는 한계를 말해주는 증거이기도 한 것이다. 한 세기 전에 출간된 베르그손의『창조적 진화』는 당시까지의 진화 이론들에 대해 숙고하고 생성철학의 입장에서 일종의 종합을 시도한 것으로 평가된다. 베르그손의 작업은 오늘날 알려진 바와는 달리 당대의 생물학자들에게 어떤 방식으로든 직간접적으로 영향을 주었고 지금도 여전히 살아있는 문제를 제기하고 있다. 그간 생물학의 여러 영역에서 일어난 발전은 눈부신 것이었고 이런 의미에서 그의 작업을 오늘날의 관점에서 재평가해보는 일이 필요하다. 물론 이것은 그의 철학을 자연주의적으로 해석한다는 전제 없이는 보람없는 논쟁이 될 수 있다. 우리는 엘랑 비탈의 개념을 생명 현상에서 나타나는 우발성과 새로움(창조)이라는 두 가지 속성으로 정의하고 그의 (...) 진화론을 재구성해볼 것이다. 진화론에는 사실의 측면과 논리적, 이론적인 측면이 공존한다. 따라서 이 작업은 베르그손 당대의 진화론과 그것의 역사적 전개를 엿보게 해 주는 동시에 이론적인 면에서는 현대적 논쟁들로 연결된다. 우리는 도킨스, 마이어와 같은 신다윈주의자들과 굴드와 같은 고생물학자로 대표되는 현대 진화론의 두 대립하는 입장을 소개하고 이들과 베르그손을 차례로 비교하면서 몇 몇 흥미로운 지점들에 주목할 것이다. 이 비교는 적어도 진화론에서 사실과 관련된 문제 그리고 논리적인 전제들을 구분하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 본다. 교육이 무언가 목적을 달성하고자 하는 의도적 활동이라면, (덕윤리적 관점에서) 도덕 교육은 훌륭한 도덕 품성 개발이라는 목적을 달성하고자 하는 의도적 교수 행위이다. 교사는 학생으로 하여금 어떻게 하면 훌륭한 도덕 품성을 함양하도록 할 것인가에 대해 교수하며, 학생은 이런 내용 전반을 학습한다. 학교 현장에서 이루어지는 도덕 교육에 대한 체계적인 교수-학습 활동 역시 도덕 품성 개발에 대한 도덕 교사의 교수 활동과 이를 배우는 학생의 도덕 학습 활동이 도덕 교육의 목적에 맞게 유기적으로 진행되는 일이다. 학생이 수행하는 도덕 학습은 교사로부터 사회 현실에 맞는 도덕 품성을 습득하여 (...) 그에 따른 올바른 행동을 수행하는 것에 대한 총체적 이해의 과정이다. 교사는 이러한 학습 과정을 통해 학생의 성향 및 품성이 올바른 방향으로 변화될 수 있도록 촉구한다. 그리고 교사는 학생으로 하여금 이러한 학습 과정을 통해 언젠가 더 이상의 도덕 학습 없이도 자기 스스로 훌륭한 도덕 품성을 실현해내는 도덕적 성숙의 단계에 진입할 수 있도록 도움을 줄 수 있다. 본 논문은 에드문드 핀코프의 덕윤리적 관점을 고려하여 훌륭한 품성을 지닌 사람은 어떤 사람이며, 훌륭한 도덕 품성에 대한 교육은 어떻게 이루어져야 하는지에 대한 이해를 도모하고자 하였다. 핀코프는 다른 어떤 사항보다 품성 함양이 최우선이라는 덕윤리적 입장에서 훌륭한 도덕적 품성 개발을 도덕 교육의 중심에 두고자 하였다. 따라서 본 논문은 훌륭한 품성 교육에 대한 핀코프의 견해를 상세하게 다루면서, 결국 품성 교육으로서의 도덕 교육의 의의를 조명하는 일에 집중하고자 하였다. 그리고 이와 함께 덕윤리적 관점에서 바라본 도덕 교육의 특성을 명확하게 규명해내는 일도 소홀히 하지 않고자 하였다. La question platonicienne est traversée par une énigme qui défie les interprètes depuis les travaux de Léon Robin, qui datent de plus d'un siècle. Platon a-t-il élaboré une doctrine, ou sa pensée est-elle tout entière contenue dans les dialogues? Autrement dit, y a-t-il un enseignement secret de Platon qui n'apparaîtrait pas dans son oeuvre écrite? Le témoignage des doxographes, à commencer par Aristote, laisse entendre que Platon a bien enseigné une doctrine, mais comment expliquer le silence des dialogues? Analysant l'étrange (...) passage du Timée qui s'articule sur la gamme pythagoricienne, J.-J. Duhot, qui a aussi été musicien professionnel, en a décrypté la clef, qui avait échappé aux interprètes : le Même code l'octave, soit le rapport 2, et l'Autre code la quinte, soit le rapport 3/2. Cette clef, indiscutable en elle-même, comme le démontre J.-J. Duhot, permet d'établir la grille de lecture qui éclaire toutes les obscurités du passage. On a donc là une double équivalence, entre métaphysique (Un/Multiple), acoustique (octave et quinte), et mathématiques (construction arithmétique de la gamme). J.-J. Duhot montre que c'est la matrice sur laquelle Platon construit son oeuvre et met en place le postulat de mathématicité du monde, qui sera la base de toute la science moderne, à partir de Galilée. La gamme du Timée offre un modèle mathématique, la division de 2 en produits de facteurs dans un système logarithmique, qui résout (métaphoriquement) les problèmes de l'Un et du Multiple. On voit ainsi apparaître un "cycle éléatique" dans lequel, au fil des dialogues, Parménide, Théétète, Sophiste et Politique, se met en place une véritable doctrine platonicienne. Doctrine secrète qui s'offre au lecteur qui sait en décrypter le code. (shrink)

The projection postulate, which prescribes “collapse of the state vector” upon measurement, is not an essential part of quantum mechanics. Rather it is only an optional discarding of certain branches of the state vector that are expected to be irrelevant for the purpose at hand. However, its use is hazardous, and there are examples of repeated measurements for which the conventional application of the projection postulate leads to incorrect results.

A new formulation involving fulfillment of all the Kolmogorov axioms is suggested for acomplete probability theory. This proves to be not a purely mathematical discipline. Probability theory deals with abstract objects—images of various classes of concrete objects—whereas experimental statistics deals with concrete objects alone. Both have to be taken into account. Quantum physics and classical statistical physics prove to be different aspects ofone probabilistic physics. The connection of quantum mechanics with classical statistical mechanics is examined and the origin of the (...) Schrödinger equation is elucidated. Attention is given to the true meaning of the wave-corpuscle duality, and the incompleteness of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is explained. (shrink)

A weak form of intuitionistic set theory WST lacking the axiom of extensionality is introduced. While WST is too weak to support the derivation of the law of excluded middle from the axiom of choice, we show that beefing up WST with moderate extensionality principles or quotient sets enables the derivation to go through.
