    The University of Iowa Tractatus Map.David G. Stern - 2016 - Nordic Wittgenstein Review 5 (2):203-220.
Drawing on recent work on the nature of the numbering system of the _Tractatus_ and Wittgenstein’s use of that system in his composition of the _Prototractatus_, the paper sets out the rationale for the online tool called__ __ The University of Iowa Tractatus Map. The map consists of a website with a front page that links to two separate subway-style maps of the hypertextual numbering system Wittgenstein used in his _Tractatus_. One map displays the structure of the published _Tractatus_; the (...)

Transcendental Arguments in Moral Theory.Jens Peter Brune, Robert Stern & Micha H. Werner (eds.) - 2017 - Boston: De Gruyter.
Since Barry Stroud's classic paper in 1968, the general discussion on transcendental arguments tends to focus on examples from theoretical philosophy. It also tends to be pessimistic, or at least extremely reluctant, about the potential of this kind of arguments. Nevertheless, transcendental reasoning continues to play a prominent role in some recent approaches to moral philosophy. Moreover, some authors argue that transcendental arguments may be more promising in moral philosophy than they are in theoretical contexts. Against this background, the current (...)

    Rent Control Sharing.Stephanie M. Stern - 2019 - The Law and Ethics of Human Rights 13 (2):141-178.
Rent-control laws limiting the rents private landlords can charge tenants are controversial in the United States. Critics have condemned rent control’s mandated wealth transfer from landlords to tenants, and economists have decried its negative effects on rental supply and quality. With the advent of the sharing economy, rent-controlled tenants can rent out their below-market units for short durations at market-level or premium prices, a practice I term “rent control sharing.” The reaction to rent-controlled tenants pocketing money from Airbnb and other (...)

Reflecting on Parental Concerns in the Treatment of Pediatric Brain Tumors: Observations From A General Pediatrician.Lisa Stern - 2014 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 4 (1):47-52.
This issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics explores the concerns and point of view of parents who have had to confront the devastating diagnosis of a pediatric brain tumor. This commentary, written by a general pediatrician, is a synthesis of several narrative themes which touch on a range of topics from relapse to long-term sequelae and other issues that effect a growing population of pediatric brain tumor patients. It offers a glimpse into the problems that need to be addressed by (...)

    Self-Consciousness and Self-Determination.Paul Stern (ed.) - 1989 - MIT Press.
Ernst Tugendhat's study is a unique synthesis of the contemporary, Anglo-American philosophical approach with an abiding concern for classical philosophical problems. It brings the methods of linguistic analysis to bear on such epistemological, moral, and metaphysical issues as the meaning and interconnections of self knowledge, ego identity, rational self-understanding, and freedom of the will. In this context the views of Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Mead, and Hegel are searchingly examined. The philosophical testimony of Kierkegaard, Freud, Habermas, and others is also presented and (...)

The Eichmann Trial and Its Influence on Psychiatry and Psychology.Judith Stern - 2000 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 1 (2).
This article reviews professional mental health publications before and after the Eichmann trial. Psychiatrists rejected the massive denial of survivors' emotional reactions that was prevalent in Israeli society at the time. The Eichmann trial permitted the opening up of survivors' experiences in public. Legal procedure enabled the witnesses to speak about what they had hidden until then. The judge's presence gave legitimacy and power to the accusations, transforming the survivors from outlaws to partners in justice. The audience came to support (...)

Perceived vs. Actual Emotion Reactivity and Regulation in Individuals With and Without a History of NSSI.Jessica Mettler, Melissa Stern, Stephen P. Lewis & Nancy L. Heath - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Non-suicidal self-injury has consistently been associated with self-reported difficulties in emotion reactivity and the regulation of negative emotions; however, less is known about the accuracy of these self-reports or the reactivity and regulation of positive emotions. The present study sought to investigate differences between women with and without a history of NSSI on: self-reported general tendencies of negative and positive emotion reactivity, self-reported general tendencies of negative and positive emotion regulation, and emotion regulation reported in response to a positive and (...)

A Faculty Theory of Knowledge: Hume's First Enquiry.George Stern - 1971 - Lewisburg [Pa.]: Bucknell University Press.
This work draws together the strands of doctine into the epistemological theory that Hume called 'a mental geography, ' which translates in modern terms into a faculty theory of knowledge. This theory forms the foundation of Hume's other best-known doctrines and, the author argues, is essential to their proper understanding.

    A Biosemiotic Encyclopedia: an Encyclopedic Model for Evolution.Ľudmila Lacková - 2018 - Biosemiotics 11 (2):307-322.
New discoveries in the life sciences have affirmed that the virtual script as well as its context-dependent reading and interpretation determine the final living creature. An extended understanding of Darwinian Theory is crucial for understanding life as semiosis in terms of Peirce and Eco’s semiotic models. The semiosis of living systems is potentially unlimited. Genes are not static and unchangeable scripts, but can always be reinterpreted by new interpretants that illuminate them from different points of view, depending on which properties (...)

Sobre as ciências humanas: diálogos entre Ernst Cassirer e Mikhail Bakhtin.Ludmila Kemiac - 2024 - Bakhtiniana 19 (4):e65025p.
ABSTRACT Many studies, aiming to analyze the philosophical roots of the ideas of the so-called “Bakhtin Circle,” have shown some convergences between the thought of the German philosopher Ernst Cassirer and the ideas outlined by the Circle’s authors. Therefore, in this article, we seek to compare Cassirer’s theories about “cultural sciences” with Bakhtin’s reflections on these same sciences. Throughout the article, we point out similarities and differences in the discussions presented by the two authors. We highlight a clear similarity in (...)

    Structural semiology, Peirce, and biolinguistics.Ľudmila Lacková - 2023 - Semiotica 2023 (253):1-21.
Peirce’s sign model is introduced as incompatible with structural semiology in the majority of semiotics textbooks. In this paper, I would like to argue against this general polarization of the semiotic discipline. I focus on compatibilities between Lucien Tesnière’s syntactic theory (verbal valency) and Peirce’s logic of relatives. My main argument is that structural linguistics is not necessarily dyadic, and that Peirce’s sign doctrine is perfectly structural. To define the structural approach in Peirce, I analyze the notions of form (structure) (...)

Entre Lacan y Benjamin: la segunda muerte como asunto de la redención. Pervivencia [Nachleben] y experiencia histórica.Ludmila Fuks - 2020 - Cuadernos de Filosofía 73:67-77.
In thesis VI of Walter Benjamin’s On the Concept of History, we find the sentence of danger in which the dead are, which we can think of as a threat of a second death, or symbolic death of the oppressed tradition of which the historiographer has to be alert. Now, if there is a second death it is because there is a life after natural death, that is a survival [Nachleben] of the past in the present. This survival, in the (...)
