Reconsidering the Alien Doctor Analogy: a challenge to skeptical theism.Luke Tucker - 2023 - International Journal for Philosophy of Religion 94 (2):213-223.
The claim that skeptical theism induces moral paralysis or aporia (known as the moral paralysis objection) has been extensively discussed. In this context, Stephen Maitzen has introduced the Alien Doctor Analogy, an intriguing case that he employs to advance the moral paralysis objection. Michael Rea, however, has criticized the analogy for portraying the skeptical theist uncharitably. In this essay, I argue that Maitzen and Rea are both incorrect: the Alien Doctor Analogy is flawed indeed, but because it portrays the skeptical (...)

    Categories of Historical Thought.Luke O’Sullivan - 2008 - Philosophia 36 (4):429-452.
This paper argues that the identity of history as a discipline derives from its distinctive combination of intellectual assumptions, or categories. Many of these categories are shared with other fields of thought, including science, literature, and common sense, but in history are understood in a unique way. This paper first examines the general notion of categories of historical understanding, then scrutinises some of the specific categories suggested by classic authors on the philosophy of history such as Dilthey and Collingwood. Singing Oneself or Living Deliberately: Whitman and Thoreau on Individuality and Democracy.Luke Philip Plotica - 2017 - Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 53 (4):601.
It is for want of a man that there are so many men. It is individuals that populate the world. The average man of a land at last only is important. In 1826, nearly a decade before Alexis de Tocqueville published his epochal analysis of American individualism in Democracy in America, Ralph Waldo Emerson aptly remarked that nineteenth-century Americans lived in “the age of the first person singular.”1 Throughout the century American society was characterized by a “heightened sense of the importance of (...)

The Generation of Knowledge from Multiple Testimonies.Aviezer Tucker - 2016 - Social Epistemology 30 (3):251-272.
The article presents, develops, and defends a non-reductionist model of the generation of knowledge from multiple testimonies. It distinguishes the generation of knowledge from multiple testimonies from the transmission of knowledge by a single testimony. The reiteration of the generation of knowledge from multiple testimonies generates social knowledge.Critical examination of the literature about the coherence of multiple testimonies, their reliability, and independence argues in particular against conditional and causal interpretations and attempts to overcome the limitations of exclusively conceptual and formal (...)

Computable and continuous partial homomorphisms on metric partial algebras.Viggo Stoltenberg-Hansen & John V. Tucker - 2003 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 9 (3):299-334.
We analyse the connection between the computability and continuity of functions in the case of homomorphisms between topological algebraic structures. Inspired by the Pour-El and Richards equivalence theorem between computability and boundedness for closed linear operators on Banach spaces, we study the rather general situation of partial homomorphisms between metric partial universal algebras. First, we develop a set of basic notions and results that reveal some of the delicate algebraic, topological and effective properties of partial algebras. Our main computability concepts (...)

The Philosophy of Qi: The Record of Great Doubts.Mary Evelyn Tucker (ed.) - 2007 - Cambridge University Press.
_The Record of Great Doubts_ emphasizes the role of _qi_ in achieving a life of engagement with other humans, with the larger society, and with nature as a whole. Rather than encourage transcendental escapism or quietism, Ekken articulates a philosophy of material force as a basis of living a life of commitment to the world. In this spirit, moral cultivation is not an isolated or a self-centered preoccupation, but an activity that occurs within the dynamic forces of nature and amid (...)

ExcerptWhat factors lead to any war being fought in a particular manner? How and why do those factors become institutionalized, or abandoned, as prime forms of war for typifying other armed conflicts in changing world orders? When and why do the prevailing parameters of world order shape the conduct of war? Questions about the forms of war became highly salient in 1945 when, by virtue of the United Nations Charter, “the peoples of the United Nations determined” to organize stronger institutions (...)

In this paper, I show how the phenomenological and hermeneutic traditions and method converge on their treatment of the historical subject. Thinkers from both traditions claim that subjectivity is shaped by a historical worldview. Each tradition provides an account of how these worldviews are shaped, and thus how essentially historical subjective experience is molded. I argue that both traditions, although offering helpful ways of understanding the way history shapes subjectivity, go too far in their epistemic claims for the superiority of (...)

The new politics of property rights.Aviezer Tucker, Alba Maria Ruibal, Jack Cahill & Farrah Brown - 2004 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 16 (4):377-403.
Philosophical defenses of property regimes can be classified as supporting either a conservative politics of property rights—the political protection of existing property titles—or a radical politics of direct political intervention to redistribute property titles. Traditionally, historical considerations were used to legitimize conservative property‐rights politics, while consequentialist arguments led to radical politics. Recently, however, the philosophical legitimations have changed places. Conservatives now point to the beneficial economic consequences of something like the current private‐property regime, while radicals justify political redistribution as restitution (...)

James Boswell and Corsica 1728–1768: the development of British opinion during the Corsican revolt.Luke Long - 2019 - History of European Ideas 45 (6):817-841.
James Boswell (1740–1795) is most famous for writing the masterly biography of his friend and mentor The Life of Samuel Johnson, published in 1791, only a few years before his own death. However, during Boswell’s own lifetime he was far more famous for his other major work, the Account of Corsica (1768). The Account of Corsica has been rather neglected by modern scholarship. This article will attempt show its importance in the context of the mid eighteenth century. Boswell’s Account was (...)

Metadiscourse in group supervision: How school counselors-in-training construct their transitional professional identities.Melissa Luke & Cynthia Gordon - 2016 - Discourse Studies 18 (1):25-43.
We use discourse analysis to examine a group supervision meeting in which graduate students who are training to become school counselors discuss counseling experiences that they had at local high schools. Focusing on metadiscourse, or talk about talk, we integrate Ochs’ concepts of epistemic stance and affective stance and Tannen’s discussion of linguistic strategies as ambiguous and polysemous in terms of power and solidarity in order to demonstrate how counselors-in-training construct their identities as what Woodside et al. call ‘boundary-dwellers’ in (...)
