This work examines the range of work in which value theorists are engaging in the first decade of the 21st century with essays illustrating the ways in which theorists from different parts of thw world draw on an increasingly broad range of intellectual thought.

Perhaps no philosopher has so fully explored the nature and conditions of historical understanding as Wilhelm Dilthey. His work, conceived overall as a Critique of Historical Reason and developed through his well-known theory of the human studies, provides concepts and methods still fruitful for those concerned with analyzing the human condition. Despite the increasing recognition of Dilthey's contributions, relati vely few of his writings have as yet appeared in English translation. It is therefore both timely and useful to have (...) available here two works drawn from different phases in the development of his philosophy. The "Ideas Concerning a Descriptive and Analytic Psychology" (1894), now translated into English for the first time, sets forth Dilthey's programma tic and methodological viewpoints through a descriptive psychology, while "The Understanding of Other Persons and Their Expressions of Life" (ca. 1910) is representative of his later hermeneutic approach to historical understanding. DESCRIPTIVE PSYCHOLOGY AND THE HUMAN STUDIES Dilthey presented the first mature statement of his theory of the human studies in volume one of his Einleitung in die Geisteswissenschaften (Introduction to the Human Studies), published in 1883. He argued there that for the proper study of man and history we must eschew the metaphysical speculation of the absolute idealists while at the same time avoiding the scientistic reduction of positivism. I propose an account of probability in the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics. According to the account, probabilities are objective chances of centered propositions. As I show, the account solves a number of problems concerning the role of probability in the Everett interpretation. It also challenges an implicit assumption, concerning the aim and scope of fundamental physical theories, that is made throughout the philosophy of physics literature.

How far does a researcher’s responsibility extend when an incidental finding is identified? Balancing pertinent ethical principles such as beneficence, respect for persons, and duty to rescue is not always straightforward, particularly in neuroimaging research where empirical data that might help guide decision making are lacking. We conducted a systematic survey of perceptions and preferences of 396 investigators, research participants, and Institutional Review Board members at our institution. Using the partial entrustment model as described by Richardson, we argue that our (...) data supports universal reading by a neuroradiologist of all research MRI scans for incidental findings and providing full disclosure to all participants. Philosophers have developed several detailed accounts of what makes some mathematical proofs explanatory. Significantly less attention has been paid, however, to what makes some proofs more explanatory than other proofs. That is problematic, since the reasons for thinking that some proofs explain are also reasons for thinking that some proofs are more explanatory than others. So in this paper, I develop an account of comparative explanation in mathematics. I propose a theory of the `at least as explanatory as' relation among (...) mathematical proofs. (shrink)

Fichtes Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre erreicht das wirkliche Bewußtsein und Selbstbewußtsein im Resultat. Denn erst die in den abschließenden Passagen ihres theoretischen und praktischen Teils dargestellte Reflexion, die die vorbewußten Setzungen des Ich ursprünglich re-produziert, läßt das Bewußtsein des Sittengesetzes und mit ihm das ganze Bewußtsein entspringen. Das im Beschluß der GWL gedachte Gefühl der »Zufriedenheit [...], Ausfüllung, völligen Vollendung« entsteht im wirklichen Ich, wenn das Ich seiner poietischen »Idee«, rein durch sich selbst gesetzt und aller Abhängigkeit vom Nicht-Ich enthoben (...) zu sein, augenblicklich gleich geworden ist. In seiner WL nova methodo charakterisiert Fichte die Aufgabe der Transzendentalphilosophie wie folgt: »die Bedingungen des Bewußtseins nach den schon bekannten Regeln zusammen zu setzen, und das Bewußtsein vor unseren Augen zu construieren«. Dieses Zitat bringt das Herzstück der frühen Fichteschen WL zum Vorschein und vermag auch das Grundanliegen der GWL präzise zu charakterisieren. Die WL strebt nach der genetischen Einsicht des wirklichen Bewußtseins und kann daher nicht vom Bewußtsein ausgehen; sie muß hinter das Bewußtsein zurückgehen, um es vor unseren (...) Augen konstruieren zu können. Fichtes Konzeption der produktiven Vernunft hat, wie im folgenden gezeigt werden soll, das Programm einer genetischen bzw. konstruktiven Deduktion des Bewußtseins erst möglich gemacht. Denn die von Fichte gedachten produktiven bzw. schlechthin setzenden Handlungen der Vernunft stellen ein systematisches Gefüge dar, aus dem eine vollständige Totalität von Produkten hervorgeht. Für die Genese des wirklichen Bewußtseins und Selbstbewußtseins erweist sich jener Wendepunkt als entscheidend, an dem die Produktion selbst den Charakter der Reflexion annimmt, nämlich der Reflexion auf ihre eigenen Produkte. Und weil die ursprüngliche Reflexion einer noch ursprünglicheren Produktion entspringt, hat sie selbst produktiven Charakter, ist sie re-produktiv; sie setzt gleichsam noch einmal, was bereits gesetzt ist. Die Reflexion bringt auf diese Weise neue Produkte mit sich, die das produzierend-reflektierende Ich zunächst ebenfalls nicht als seine eigenen Produkte erkennt, weshalb die Reflexion, wie gezeigt werden soll, eine ebenso ursprüngliche Projektion ist. Das systematische Wechselspiel von Reflexion und Projektion macht, ab einem gewissen Reflexionspunkte, Gegenstands- und Selbstbewußtsein für das Ich unterscheidbar und damit als solche erst möglich. A popular method for comparing the structures of mathematical objects, which I call the ‘subset approach’, says that X has more structure than Y just in case X’s automorphisms form a proper subset of Y’s automorphisms. This approach is attractive, in part, because it seems to yield the right results in some comparisons of spacetime structure. But as I show, it yields the wrong results in a number of other cases. The problem is that the subset approach compares structure using (...) automorphism sets. So a different approach is needed: structure should be compared using automorphism groups. (shrink)

I explore how the nature, scope, and limits of the knowledge obtained in orbital dynamics has changed in recent years. Innovations in the design of spacecraft trajectories, as well as in astronomy, have led to new logics of theory-testing—that is, new research methodologies—in orbital dynamics. These methodologies—which combine resonance overlap theories, numerical experiments, and the implementation of space missions—were developed in response to the discovery of chaotic dynamical systems in our solar system. In the past few decades, they have replaced (...) the methodology that dominated orbital research in the centuries following Newton's Principia. As a result, the kind of knowledge achieved by orbital research has changed: we can know how orbiting bodies in chaotic systems behave, but only over sufficiently short time scales; and we can reliably measure those temporal limitations, using Lyapunov time.
