Lonergan's Meaning of Complete in the Fifth Canon of Scientific Method.Philip McShane - 2004 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 4:53-81.
I follow the editor’s suggestion in dividing this essay into sections dealing with a) content, b) context, c) personal context. However, I break the personal reflections into two sections that bracket the presentation of content and context. So, sections 1 and 4 present my personal perspective; section 2 is a shot at a hypothetical expression of the content of Lonergan’s meaning of complete; section 3 handles the context problem. The immediately relevant expressed contexts for the effort here are The Sketch (...)

    'What-To-Do?': The Heart of Lonergan's Ethics.Philip McShane - 2012 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 7:69-93.
Philip McShane explores the implications of Bernard Lonergan’s compacted account of ‘what questions’ and ‘what-to-do questions’ for understanding deliberation. The essay provides a fascinating and instructive glimpse into McShane’s own long-continued struggle and dialogue with Lonergan’s achievement.

Implementation: The Ongoing Crisis of Method.Philip McShane - 2003 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 3:11-32.
The editor has raised what for me is the central present problem of Lonergan studies. His invitation to me is that I provide an etching of the problem, a brief basis for discussion. Immediately I think of Fr. Fred Crowe’s old question, What functional speciality are you working in?, and my reply has to be an honest “none.” This seems to me to be an important but simple aspect of the present problem. If one takes Lonergan’s methodological doctrine, as described (...)

Foundational Ethics, Feminism, and Business Ethics.Philip McShane - 2002 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 2:81-114.
The phrase seeing the past as better has an echo for the Lonergan scholar, to whom this effort is primarily addressed, an echo of the dialectic effort. So, it is a reminder of one of Lonergan’s main cultural achievements: thematising functional specialization. Then one might envisage Business Ethics as it is taught as one of the fruits of that specialization. As so envisaged it is not part of the theological process proper but a result of the specialty called Communications: it (...)

Statistics as Science: Lonergan, McShane, and Popper.Patrick H. Byrne - 2003 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 3:55-75.
On this occasion of honouring the achievement of Philip McShane, I would like to recall his earliest and, in my judgment, most important work, Randomness, Statistics and Emergence. In particular, I will recall how that work situated Lonergan’s important breakthrough on statistical method in relation to the major currents of thought on the subject, many of which remain influential still today.

Philip McShane's Axial Period: An Interpretation.Alessandra Drage - 2004 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 4:128-179.
Let’s suppose that the Axial Period is a time in history that is a transition between the first time of the temporal subject and the second time of the temporal subject; that it is the second stage of meaning: a troubled time between a first stage of meaning, characterized by a spontaneously operative consciousness in ‘early’ culture, and a third stage of meaning constituted by at least a dominant authority of a luminous control of meaning and an explicit metaphysics in (...)

Implementation in Lonergan's Early Historical Manuscripts.Patrick Brown - 2003 - Journal of Macrodynamic Analysis 3:231-249.
It has been said of Pound’s great work, the Cantos, that it was not “a poem written from within modern civilization, but a poem about a break with modern civilization and a search for a new basis.” Perhaps the same can be said of Lonergan’s great works, and McShane’s. To use McShane’s phrase, they are great pastmodern works. They attempt to move past the massive impasses of self-neglect so thoroughly and pervasively concretized in the historic flow. They involve (...)

Environmental Ethics.Clare Palmer, Katie Mcshane & Ronald Sandler - 2014 - Annual Review of Environment and Resources 39:419-442.
Environmental ethics—the study of ethical questions raised by human relations with the nonhuman environment—emerged as an important subfield of philosophy during the 1970s. It is now a flourishing area of research. This article provides a review of the secular, Western traditions in the field. It examines both anthropocentric and nonanthropocentric claims about what has value, as well as divergent views about whether environmental ethics should be concerned with bringing about best consequences, respecting principles and rights, or embodying environmental virtues. The (...)

Isolated Environmental Cues and Product Efficacy Penalties: The Color Green and Eco-labels.Ethan Pancer, Lindsay McShane & Theodore J. Noseworthy - 2017 - Journal of Business Ethics 143 (1):159-177.
The current work examines how cues traditionally used to signal environmental friendliness, specifically the color green and eco-labels, and influence product efficacy perceptions and subsequent purchase intentions. Across three experiments, we find that environmental cues used in isolation reduce perceptions of product efficacy. We argue that this efficacy discounting effect occurs because the isolated use of an environmental cue introduces category ambiguity by activating competing functionality and environmentally friendly schemas during evaluation. We discuss the implications of our findings for research (...)

Conceptualizing and evaluating replication across domains of behavioral research.Jennifer L. Tackett & Blakeley B. McShane - 2018 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 41:e152.
We discuss the authors' conceptualization of replication, in particular the false dichotomy of direct versus conceptual replication intrinsic to it, and suggest a broader one that better generalizes to other domains of psychological research. We also discuss their approach to the evaluation of replication results and suggest moving beyond their dichotomous statistical paradigms and employing hierarchical/meta-analytic statistical models.

  31. Why Environmental Ethics Shouldn’t Give Up on Intrinsic Value.Katie McShane - 2007 - Environmental Ethics 29 (1):43-61.
Recent critics (Andrew Light, Bryan Norton, Anthony Weston, and Bruce Morito, among others) have argued that we should give up talk of intrinsic value in general and that of nature in particular. While earlier theorists might have overestimated the importance of intrinsic value, these recent critics underestimate its importance. Claims about a thing’s intrinsic value are claims about the distinctive way in which we have reason to care about that thing. If we understand intrinsic value in this manner, we can (...)

    Insight.Bernard J. F. Lonergan - 1957 - New York,: Philosophical Library.
Insight is Bernard Lonergan's masterwork. It aim is nothing less than insight into insight itself, a comprehensive view of knowledge and understanding, and to state what one needs to understand and how one proceeds to understand it. In Lonergan's own words: 'Thoroughly understand what it is to understand, and not only will you understand the broad lines of all there is to be understood but also you will possess a fixed base, and invariant pattern, opening upon all further developments of (...)

Ethical Issues in Intraoperative Neuroscience Research: Assessing Subjects’ Recall of Informed Consent and Motivations for Participation.Anna Wexler, Rebekah J. Choi, Ashwin G. BackgroundAn increasing number of studies utilize intracranial electrophysiology in human subjects to advance basic neuroscience knowledge. However, the use of neurosurgical patients as human research subjects raises important ethical considerations, particularly regarding informed consent and undue influence, as well as subjects’ motivations for participation. Yet a thorough empirical examination of these issues in a participant population has been lacking. The present study therefore aimed to empirically investigate ethical concerns regarding informed consent and voluntariness in Parkinson’s disease patients undergoing deep brain (...)

Randomized Clinical Trials in the medical community are generally lasting longer due to a number of factors, including an increase in the total volume of biomedical research, expanded federal regulatory requirements, and a rise in patient interest in participating as research subjects. Leading national and international initiatives promote clinical research in children. The primary impetus for these initiatives is the need for adequate data for clinical application of new products and treatment approaches in the pediatric population. Clinical investigations must maintain (...)

  40. To Thine Own Self Be True? Employees’ Judgments of the Authenticity of Their Organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility Program.Lindsay McShane & Peggy Cunningham - 2012 - Journal of Business Ethics 108 (1):81-100.
Despite recognizing the importance of developing authentic corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, noticeably absent from the literature is consideration for how employees distinguish between authentic and inauthentic CSR programs. This is somewhat surprising given that employees are essentially the face of their organization and are largely expected to act as ambassadors for the organization’s CSR program (Collier and Esteban in Bus Ethics 16:19–33, 2007 ). The current research, by conducting depth interviews with employees, builds a better understanding of how employees (...)

Verbum: word and idea in Aquinas.Bernard J. F. Lonergan - 1946 - London,: Darton, Longman & Todd. Edited by David B. Burrell.
Presents Bernard Lonergan's five "verbum" articles that originally appeared in Theological studies. For Thomist students and scholars this "verbum" study offers a careful appraisal of the Thomist theory of knowledge as well as an introduction to the concepts found in Father Lonergan's "Insight". Since the concept of "verbum" dynamically affects the thought of Aquinas, it is necessary to grasp this concept to understand Thomist metaphysics and rational psychology. Lonergan has carefully analyzed and explicitly outlined "verbum"--An integral part of the Thomist (...)

In this paper I defend dependence on moral testimony. I show how going defenses of dependence on moral testimony have portrayed it as second-best by centering on how and why it is an important means to overcoming our defects. I argue that once we consider the pervasiveness of moral testimony in the context of intimate relationships, we can see that the value of dependence on moral testimony goes beyond this: it is not only our flaws and limitations that justify our (...)

While holist views such as ecocentrism have considerable intuitive appeal, arguing for the moral considerability of ecological wholes such as ecosystems has turned out to be a very difficult task. In the environmental ethics literature, individualist biocentrists have persuasively argued that individual organisms—but not ecological wholes—are properly regarded as having a good of their own . In this paper, I revisit those arguments and contend that they are fatally flawed. The paper proceeds in five parts. First, I consider some problems (...)
