This paper builds on previous work that investigated anticancer drugs as ‘informed materials’, i.e., substances that undergo an informational enrichment that situates them in a dense relational web of qualifications and measurements generated by clinical experiments and clinical trials. The paper analyzes the recent transformation of anticancer drugs from ‘informed’ to ‘informing material’. Briefly put: in the post-genomic era, anti-cancer drugs have become instruments for the production of new biological, pathological, and therapeutic insights into the underlying etiology and evolution of (...) cancer. Genomic platforms characterize individual patients’ tumors based on their mutational landscapes. As part of this new approach, drugs targeting specific mutations transcend informational enrichment to become tools for informing their targets, while also problematizing the very notion of a ‘target’. In other words, they have become tools for the exploration of cancer pathways and mechanisms. While several studies in the philosophy and history of biomedicine have called attention to the heuristic relevance and experimental use of drugs, few have investigated concrete instances of this role of drugs in clinical research. Ces concepts possèdent un statut particulier, du fait qu’ils ajoutent au passé certains éléments structurants qui lui sont étrangers. La question est donc de savoir si ces apports extérieurs entrent en jeu lorsque vient le moment de juger de l’utilité ou de la désuétude des concepts colligés. En travaillant à partir d’une caractérisation minimale du narrativisme, je présenterai l’analyse de deux formes de désuétudes que l’on retrouve en histoire et (...) qui se distinguent de ce que l’on peut observer ailleurs dans les autres sciences, soit la désuétude occasionnelle et la désuétude par l’élimination. The development of the aquaculture industry in Canada has triggered a conflict of a scope never seen before. As stated in Young and Matthews’ The Aquaculture Controversy, this debate has “mushroomed over the past several decades to become one of the most bitter and stubborn face-offs over industrial development ever witnessed in Canada” (Young and Matthews in The aquaculture controversy in Canada. Activism, policy and contested science. UBC Press, Vancouver, p 3, 2010). It opposes a wide variety of actors: from (...) industrial investors, scientists, politicians and environmentalists to Native associations and communities, citizens groups and local stakeholders. The opposition is fierce between those in favor of a flourishing and modern aquaculture of industrial nature and those who fear the dreadful consequences of such an industry. In particular, the possible implementation of biotechnology innovations, such as a genetically modified salmon, has made this debate coextensive with the GMO debate, thus multiplying the opposition’s spectrum of arguments against the industry. Throughout the debate, Canadian environmental NGOs like the Suzuki Foundation and Greenpeace Canada have assumed leadership over the opposition to aquaculture development with certain success. Their participation in the debate features numerous ethical concerns related to environmental health, a respect for wilderness and local human communities. Such a position can be associated overall with a form of ecocentric ethics or concern. Nevertheless, a careful examination of the technical solutions proposed by these NGOs reveals their embeddedness in biocentrism. Through the example taken from the Canadian debate on aquaculture development, this paper aims to highlight the conceptual difficulty of enacting ecocentric ethical positions beyond formal arguments. Because ecocentrism implies a true paradigm shift, not only in mentality, but also in the way we conceive our technical interventions in nature, biocentrism remains an important practical method to enact ethical positions related to environmental concerns in public debates. Etienne Bonnot de Condillac (1715-1780) fut abbé, précepteur, enseignant et ami des Lumières. Il fréquenta Diderot, Rousseau et Fontenelle. Elu à l'Académie en 1768, sa vie ne présente aucun signe particulier. Il vécut pour les idées, et en vécut aussi. L'Essai sur l'origine des connaissances humaines (1749) est le premier ouvrage philosophique important de Condillac. Disciple de Locke et adversaire de Descartes, Condillac y conduit une recherche analytique du processus de la connaissance, indiquant en sous-titre : "Ouvrage où l'on réduit (...) à un seul principe tout ce qui concerne l'entendement humain", En fait, son analyse l'amène à un double principe qu'il énonce en conclusion. D'une part, "les sens sont la source de nos connaissances", et ici Condillac n'opère pas de distinction entre source, origine et fondement. D'autre part, soupçonnant que si nos connaissances viennent avec l'expérience, elles ne viennent pas de l'expérience - pressentant ainsi la philosophie critique de Kant - il est amené à établir un second principe extrêmement fécond : "On ne peur perfectionner les sciences qu'en travaillant à en rendre le langage plus exact. L'origine et le progrès de nos connaissances dépendent entièrement de la manière dont nous nous servons des signes." Cet Essai est le premier dans l'histoire de la philosophie à conduire une analyse rationnelle de la nature et de la fonction du langage débarrassée de la scolastique et de la théologie. Cet aspect est d'autant plus important qu'il influencera de façon notable les idéologues du XVIIIème et contribuera à la naissance de la linguistique. Condillac n'est pas seulement un "philosophe sensualiste", formulation qui traîne dans tous les manuels. On peut à bon droit le considérer comme le fondateur de la philosophie analytique. Depuis presque trente ans, ce texte n'avait pas été réédité en Français. Nous l'avons repris de la troisième et dernière édition revue et augmentée par Condillac en 1777, trois ans avant sa mort. Le volume "Images de Platon et lectures de ses oeuvres" rassemble vingt et une contributions consacrees a diverses relectures qui ont ete faites de l'oeuvre ecrite de Platon entre le IIIe siecle (Diogene Laerce, Plotin) et le XXe sievle (K. Popper). Dans l'introduction, Ada Neschke met en lumiere le cheminement de ces relectures et souligne le fait que les lectures de Platon sont constamment alimentees par des preoccupations propres a ses lecteurs. Dans un premier temps, l'oeuvre de Platon est integree (...) dans une optique essentiellement theologique; apres l'avenement du kantisme, elle s'inscrit dans un cadre de pensee qui se veut critique et philosophique, c'est-a-dire emancipe de l'ancienne metaphysique. Ainsi, l'oeuvre de Platon represente, d'une part, pour les penseurs chretiens une source d'inspiration concernant les sujets les plus divers: la theologie chretienne (Clement d'Alexandrie, Ficin, les Platoniciens de Cambridge), la mytho-theologie neo-platonicienne (Plethon), l'iconographie de la trinite (Francisco di Hollanda), la politique catholique et le calviniste (Jean Bodin, Jean de Serres), le scepticisme face aux debats theologiques (Montaigne). D'autre part, Platon a la valeur d'une autorite pour les penseurs postkantiens, que ce soit pour construire une philosophie de la nature (Schelling), une ethique (Hegel), une epistemologie (les neo-kantiens Cohen et Natorp) ou encore une ontologie (Heidegger). Enfin, Platon sert de reference dans les debats politiques modernes et contemporains, en particulier dans les discussions sur le liberalisme (J. St. Mill) et le totalitarisme (Popper et ses successeurs). De l'antiquite jusqu'a nos jours, Platon reste donc un auteur qui interpelle son lecteur et lui lance meme souvent un defi. (shrink)

Vous menez depuis plusieurs années des enquêtes sur le personnel politique en France, avec l’ambition de reconsidérer la notion de « professionnel » de la politique et par extension les ressorts d’une « professionnalisation » de la vie politique en France. Un point de départ, semble-t-il, de votre réflexion porte sur le fait que ces termes servent souvent (à l’instar du vocable péjoratif de « politicien » auquel ils se substituent souvent) à dévaloriser le personnel politique. Ils avaient pourtant été (...) conçus par les sciences sociales pour mettre à distance tout jugement de valeur à propos des élus. On pense bien sûr à Max Weber, mais aussi aux travaux fondateurs de Daniel Gaxie ou Jacques Lagroye, notamment. Comment vos propres travaux se situent-ils par rapport à la dimension normative inévitablement attachée à cet objet qu’est le « métier » de député? In this article I offer an interpretation of the fundamental problem of phenomenology in terms of a philosophy of revelation proposing in this way the renewal of the last important development of Western philosophy both in terms of its metaphysical aspiration and scientific relevance. After the general introduction, I outline the philosophical problem of revelation. I show how this philosophy influenced early phenomenology. I explain the underlying subject matter in the history of phenomenology, i.e. the notion of disclosure. I also (...) outline what I term “apocalyptic phenomenology” in order to focus on the understanding of revelation. In this part I offer details of the notion of newness and the appropriate method applied here. Finally, I summarize the scientific relevance of my approach in the context of logic, methodology, disciplinarity with a special emphasis on the study of religion. (shrink)

We argue that the truth of determinism is not an interpretation-free fact and we systematically overview relevant interpretational choices that are less known in the philosophical literature. After bypassing the well known interpretational problem that arises in quantum mechanics we identify three further questions about the representational role of the mathematical structures employed by physical theories. Finally we point out that even if we settle all representational issues the received view of physical possibility may also allow the truth of determinism (...) to depend on prior philosophical convictions, notably on one's philosophical account of the nature of laws. Hawthorne, Landes, Wallmann and Williamson argue that the Principal Principle implies a version of the Principle of Indifference. We show that what the Authors take to be the Principle of Indifference can be obtained without invoking anything which would seem to be related to the Principal Principle. In the Appendix we also discuss several Conditions proposed in the same paper.

Western European liberal democracies have recently enacted laws that prohibit the diffusion of fake news on social media. Yet, many consider that such laws are incompatible with freedom of expression. In this paper, I argue that democratic governments have strong pro tanto reasons to prohibit fake news, and that doing so is compatible with free speech. First, I show that fake news disrupts a mutually beneficial form of epistemic dependence in which members of the public are engaged with journalists. Second, (...) I contend that laws against fake news enhance rather than thwart personal autonomy. If these suggestions are plausible, then the same considerations about truth and autonomy that underpin the value of free speech give us reasons to prohibit fake news. (shrink)

In this final edition of his classic study of St. Thomas Aquinas, Etienne Gilson presents the sweeping range and organic unity of Thomistic philosophical thought. The philosophical thinking of Aquinas is the result of reason being challenged to relate to many theological conceptions of the Christian tradition. Gilson carefully reviews how Aquinas grapples with the relation itself of faith and reason and continuing through the existence and nature of God and His creation, the world and its creatures, especially human beings (...) with their power of intellect, will, and moral life. ABSTRACTThe general assumption that people fail to notice discrepancy between their answer and the normative answer in the conjunction fallacy task has been challenged by the theory of Logical Intuition. This theory suggests that people can detect the conflict between the heuristic and normative answers even if they do not always manage to inhibit their intuitive choice. This theory gained support from the finding that people report lower levels of confidence in their choice after they commit the conjunction fallacy compared (...) to when their answer is not in conflict with logic. In four experiments we asked the participants to give probability estimations to the options of the conflict and no-conflict versions of the tasks in the original set-up of the experiment or in a three-option design. We found that participants perceive probabilities for the options of the conflict version less similar than for the no-conflict version. Physicalism is often characterized as an empirical hypothesis. But according to an alternative conceptualization, it is instead a stance or an attitude. I analyze Roy Wood Sellars’s materialist philosophy in order to show that it is a counterexample to a specific physicalist empirical hypothesis: the minimal completeness of the physical. However, it is arguably not reducible to a stance: it is a meaningful metaphysical thesis with substantive cognitive content.
