'Deficient in commercial morality'?: Japan in global debates on business ethics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Janet Hunter - 2016 - London: Palgrave-Macmillan.
This enlightening text analyses the origins of Western complaints, prevalent in the late nineteenth century, that Japan was characterised at the time by exceptionally low standards of ‘commercial morality’, despite a major political and economic transformation. As Britain industrialised during the nineteenth century the issue of ‘commercial morality’ was increasingly debated. Concerns about standards of business ethics extended to other industrialising economies, such as the United States. Hunter examines the Japanese response to the charges levelled against Japan in this context, (...)

Challenges in teaching business ethics: Using role set analysis of early career dilemmas. [REVIEW]Janet S. Adams, Claudia Harris & Susan S. Carley - 1998 - Journal of Business Ethics 17 (12):1325-1335.
Emphasis in business ethics texts and courses has generally focused on corporate and other relatively high-level ethical issues. However, business school graduates in early career stages report ethical dilemmas involving individual-level decisions, often including influence attempts from one or more members of their work role sets. This paper proposes the use of role set analysis as a pedagogical technique for helping individuals to anticipate and deal with early-career ethical issues.

    Charles Darwin as a Celebrity.Janet Browne - 2003 - Science in Context 16 (1-2):175-194.
ArgumentSeveral recent works in sociology examine the manufacture of public identities through the notion of celebrity. This paper explores the imagery of Charles Darwin as a nineteenth-century scientific celebrity by comparing the public character deliberately manufactured by Darwin and his friends with images constructed by the public as represented here by caricatures in humorous magazines of the era. It is argued that Darwin’s outward persona drew on a subtle tension between public and private. The boundaries between public and private were (...)

Looking at Darwin: Portraits and the Making of an Icon.Janet Browne - 2009 - Isis 100 (3):542-570.
ABSTRACT With increased attention on the visual in the history of science, there is renewed interest in the role of portraiture and other forms of personal imagery in constructing scientific reputation and the circulation of scientific ideas. This essay indicates some directions in which researchers could push forward by studying the dissemination of pictures and portraits of Charles Darwin. Selected portraits are discussed, with particular attention paid to their circulation. The mode of production and original intent of these portraits is (...)

  25. Cartesian Skeptics.Janet Broughton - 2004 - In Walter Sinnott-Armstrong (ed.), Pyrrhonian skepticism. New York: Oxford University Press.
This essay contrasts Descartes with three skeptical figures: the Doubting Pyrrhonist, the Agrippan Pyrrhonist, and the Cartesian Skeptic. It argues that the meditator in Descartes’s Meditations is different from all three of these skeptics. Seeing the distinctive character of the meditator helps us understand how Descartes could have hoped to meet the challenge of skepticism.

Religious Freedom in Eastern Europe—before and after 1989.Janet Broun - 1991 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 8 (2):27-32.
Before 1989, Christians and Muslims in Eastern European states were the objects of firm repression. Churches and mosques had been closed, scriptures were largely unavailable, clergy were either hopelessly compromised, or barred from carrying out their ministry. Mission, religious education and charitable outreach were banned. Since 1989, religion has been one of the first areas of life to be normalised. Enormous vigour has sprung up in all areas of church life. But some difficulties still remain – in particular the re-emergence (...)
