    Retreating the Political.Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe & Jean-Luc Nancy - 1997 - New York: Routledge. Edited by Jean-Luc Nancy & Simon Sparks.
This collection of essays presents, for the first time in English, some of the key essays on the political by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and Jean-Luc Nancy. Including several unpublished essays, _Retreating the Political_ offers some highly original perspectives on the relationship between philosophy and the political. Through contemporary readings of the political in Freud, Heidegger and Marx, the authors ask if we can talk of an _a priori_ link between the philosophical and the political; they investigate the significance of the (...)

Religious parties, religious political identity, and the cold shoulder of liberal democratic thought.Nancy L. Rosenblum - 2003 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 6 (1):23-53.
Elements of the relation between religion and politics are standard themes in political theory: toleration and free exercise rights; the parameters of separation of church and state; arguments for and against constraints imposed on religious discourse by philosophic norms of public reason. But religious parties and partisanship are no part of political theory, despite contemporary interest in value pluralism and in liberal democratic theory's capacity to address multicultural, religious, and ethnic group claims. This essay argues that religious parties are missing (...)

Partisanship and independence: the peculiar moralism of American politics.Nancy L. Rosenblum - 2014 - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy 17 (3):267-288.
Against the background of historical antipartyism in practice and in democratic theory, and with a focus on American political thought, this paper takes issue with contemporary arguments that value the political identity ‘Independent’ and disparage partisanship. A typology of ‘Independent’ is offered and both empirical and moral claims about the superiority of Independent voters are rebutted, with particular focus on the ‘weightlessness’ of Independents. The reasons to appreciate the moral distinctiveness of partisanship for democracy are set out: commitment to political (...)

The Ethics of Advocacy for Undocumented Patients.Nancy Berlinger & Rajeev Raghavan - 2013 - Hastings Center Report 43 (1):14-17.
Approximately 11.2 million undocumented immigrants have settled in the United States. Providing health care to these residents is an everyday concern for the clinicians and health care organizations who serve them. Uncertain how to proceed in the face of severe financial constraints, clinicians may improvise remedies–a strategy that allows our society to avoid confronting the clinical and organizational implications of public policy gaps. There is no simple solution‐no quick fix‐that will work across organizations (in particular, hospitals with emergency departments) in (...)

Banning Parties: Religious and Ethnic Partisanship in Multicultural Democracies.Nancy L. Rosenblum - 2007 - Law and Ethics of Human Rights 1 (1):17-75.
One under-theorized aspect of "multiculturalism and the antidiscrimination principle" is religious and ethnicity based political parties. With political organization, the fact of pluralism is made concrete for democratic purposes. When the struggle for empowerment is "waged within the world of democratic politics" it is waged through parties. That is the associational form modern democracies have settled on for participation, representation, and governing, and for countervailing power and regular opposition. Particularist parties and bloc voting are key instruments of political conflict and, (...)

    Prudence Gone Wild.Nancy M. Rourke - 2011 - Environmental Ethics 33 (3):249-266.
A Catholic environmental virtue ethic must include an understanding of prudence that incorporates attunement significantly. Catholic theologians are reluctant to revise notions of prudence, but there are traditions in theology that support such an approach. Catholic virtue ethical traditions point to this necessity, and, in addition, philosophical environmental virtue ethics (which are much more fully developed) simply insist on it. The comparison of a moral character (as it is understood in virtue ethics) with a bioregion’s ecosystem helps support this argument.

    Sacramental Swallow.Nancy M. Rourke & Paula Leslie - 2013 - The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly 13 (2):253-262.
This paper contributes to our understanding of participation in the Eucharist by examining the swallow. The paper begins with a thick description of the swallow as act, as phenomenon, and as symbol. This description reveals the swallow’s interstitial nature, which is then examined for its implications on the meaning of participation in the sacrament. The paper then recommends approaches to the Eucharist for Catholics for whom swallowing is difficult or impossible. The paper finally incorporates these findings with the ex opere (...)

You Can't Always Get (or Give) What You Want: Preferences and Their Limits.Nancy Berlinger - 2018 - Hastings Center Report 48 (3):40-40.
People who lack decision‐making capacity may be able to communicate preferences, which can and should inform surrogate decision‐making on their behalf. It is unclear whether making a further distinction about “capacity for preferences,” as Jason Wasserman and Mark Navin propose in this issue of the Hastings Center Report, would improve the process of surrogate decision‐making. Anyone who is regularly involved in surrogate decision‐making or who has worked to articulate decision‐making standards and processes can think of cases in which a patient's (...)

Avoiding Cheap Grace: Medical Harm, Patient Safety, and the Culture(s) of Forgiveness.Nancy Berlinger - 2003 - Hastings Center Report 33 (6):28-36.
Too often in a hospital setting, forgiveness is thought to be automatic—given if a physician makes the apology. But this is cheap grace: a forgiveness achieved without the participation of the injured party. We must remember that forgiveness must be given, and devise new practices to see that it can be.

'Leading economists presenting fundamentally important issues in economic theory' is the theme of the Nancy Schwartz lectures series held annually at the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University. Reporting on lectures delivered in the years 1983 through 1997, this collection of essays discusses economic behavior at the individual and group level and the implications to the performance of economic systems. Using non-technical language, the speakers present theoretical, experimental, and empirical analysis of decision making under uncertainty (...)
